Three children abandoned in a boarding school in Abule-Iroko in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State are longing to meet their parents who have abandoned them for eight years. WhenPUNCH Metrovisited Solid Model College, the children recounted their ordeal, noting that the absence of their parents was affecting their studies. Seun Adepegba, 14,Seyi, 10 and Titilola, 13, had been severed from parental love and care since infanthood. After waiting for eight years, they seemed to have relinquished all hopes of reuniting with their parents. It was learnt that their tale of sorrow began in 2007 when their father, Mr Segun Adepegba, who had been separated from their mother, enrolled them in the boarding school because he could not afford to take care of them. According to the proprietor of the school, Mr Samuel Ayegbusi, Adepegba came to enroll them in his school on September 24, 2007 with a promise to always check on them. He said, “Mr. Adepegba told me his wife had just left him and that he could not afford to take care of them, being a jobless man. The children were very little. Seyi was two, while Titilola was five. “Mr Adepegba had pleaded with me to accept them in the boarding school. Mr Adepegba’s sister promised to bear the cost of their upkeep. They paid an initial N150, 000 for the three children for the first term.” But according to the proprietor, Adepegba never kept his promise. He said after the first term, the school expected him to come and take his children home for holiday but he never showed up until four years later. He said the school had expended over N7m on the upkeep of the children since 2007. The proprietor said efforts to reach the parents’ families had proved abortive, adding that calls to Adepegba’s phones were not always answered. He said, “Whenever we called him and he realised who was talking on the phone, he would switch off his phones and for the next two weeks, the numbers would not be available. When the school contacted their father’s sisters, we were told that they had travelled out of the country. “When we called one of them, we were told that they had sent money to Mr Adepegba to defray the children’s school fees and upkeep. But Mr. Adepegba has never come here to make any payment since the initial deposit he made in 2007.” According to the proprietor, taking care of the children had further become cumbersome for him as one of them, Titilayo, had started misbehaving. He recounted how Titilayo ran away from the hostel twice without informing the school authority on the excuse that she was going to look for her father. Ever since she was found, the proprietor said the school had had to keep her in a room, under tight surveillance, because she had vowed to run away to find her father. He said, “The school is not even bothered by the cost of their upkeep. But anytime the school closed for holiday and parents come around to take their children home, Titilayo would fall into a sober mood and twice, she had run away from the hostel without informing anyone. It was a resident who stopped her and brought her back to the school. Some of the teachers, who spoke withPUNCH Metroduring the visit, said the absence of the children’s parents was seriously affecting their studies. They said the appearance of their parents would boost their academic performance. While recounting their days with their father, the children said he celebrated birthdays with them. They said they had never met their mother. Titilayo said, “We do not know who our mother is. We grew up in Yaba, Lagos and all we remember is that there was a woman that washed our clothes and took care of us until we came here. We knew she was not our mother.” Seyi, the youngest of the trio, however, was an exception as she kept a cheerful look during the visit. Seyi, who told our correspondent her dream was to become a medical doctor said, “Although I have a faint memory of my father, I will like to see him. If he comes today, I will ask him why he left us for so long.” Seun added, “I don’t care how long he has left us. I just want to see him. I really need to see him.” WhenPUNCH Metrocalled Adepegba on Thursday, his phones were switched off. Source: www.punchng.com/news/man-abandons-children-in-boarding-school-for-eight-years/

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, again, on Monday, postponed his rumoured bid to defect to the All Progressives Congress. But he attended a meeting convened by the Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, an APC member, to discuss the political future of the state. Tambuwal said he was still consulting and would brief Nigerians very soon on his final decision. Nigerians are already used to this line, which has always been Tambuwal’s response to inquiries over his political future. His office said in Abuja on Monday night that a reconciliatory mission of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party to Sokoto State on Monday did not invite the Speaker to attend a meeting of the PDP stakeholders in the state. The BoT members were said to have been led by the Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih. A statement by Tambuwal’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Imam Imam, claimed that the Speaker was not invited to the meeting. However, the statement added that a separate meeting convened by Wamakko, invited Tambuwal to discuss the political future of the state. The statement said Tambuwal obliged the invitation by attending the Wamakko meeting. However, it said the Speaker was still consulting on his next political move. The statement partly read, “That today, Monday, 20/10/2014, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih, led other members of the party to a reconciliation meeting in Sokoto but the Speaker of the House of Representatives and a member of the NEC of the PDP, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (CFR), was not invited to the meeting. “That the Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal was later invited by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, to attend the meeting of their political family to discuss the political future of Sokoto State. “That the Speaker, Rt. Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, duly obliged and attended the meeting. “That the meeting had in attendance prominent Sokoto citizens many of who have no known political affiliation. The most notable being the Sardauna of Sokoto and a former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji. “That consultations on the Speaker’s political future continue and the outcome will be made public at the appropriate time.” The PUNCH learnt that Tambuwal was originally billed to announce his defection to the APC after the meeting, but later heeded “a wiser counsel” to consult more before making the final move. Tambuwal has for long been linked with a move to join the APC. At a point earlier in the year, it was rumoured that the opposition party was courting him as a possible presidential candidate. However, a “ Plan B” is said to be programmed to make him Wamakko’s successor. Tambuwal merely kept sealed lips over the issue and whenever he spoke at all, he told Nigerians he was consulting. At the House, where he presides as Speaker, there is anxiety over his political future. PDP insiders say the party may retrieve the speakership from him if he eventually defects to the APC. The PDP now firmly controls the majority in the House. But observers wonder whether the PDP could rally the support of 240 members (two-thirds) out of 360 to remove Tambuwal, should he defect to the APC. The Lagos State Government on Sunday said it was finalising arrangements to deploy some health workers, who had helped in the containment of the Ebola Virus Disease in the state, in Sierra Leone. The Governor, Babatunde Fashola, made the announcement in Ikeja while speaking at a programme to commemorate the 2,700 Days of his administration in office. The governor said the health workers were to replicate the stat’s virus containment strategies in the Sierra Leone with a view to assisting the Ebola-hit country overcome the health crisis. Fashola said although Nigeria was, as of now, free from the disease, there was still the risk of new infections from cross-border movements. He, therefore, said the state’s planned mission to Sierra Leone was not only to assist the country to overcome the great health challenge, but also reduce the risk of the spread of the disease to countries within the sub-region. News Agency of Nigeriareports that Sierra Leone accounts for a substantial number of the over 4,000 global Ebola deaths. The governor said, “Lagos is free from Ebola, Nigeria is free from Ebola. But that does not mean there cannot be another case. For as long as people are moving from countries to countries, the risk of infections is still there. ‘That is why I appeal to the Federal Government to continue to scrutinise people travelling into Nigeria from land, sea and air from regions where the disease is still ravaging. “That is why some of the things the commissioner for health will be announcing very soon is the arrangements we are making to send some of our health workers and volunteers to go and help out in Sierra Leone. “That is the only way we, the whole of Africa and the World can be safe.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/ebola-lagos-plans-sending-health-workers-to-sierra-leone/ |
The crisis in Edo State took another dimension last Saturday when an explosion rocked a mini estate belonging to the a former Secretary to the Edo State Government, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, on Denis Osadebey Way in Benin, the state capital. It was learnt that the explosion, which occurred at about 10.30pm, was caused by an improvised explosive device planted at the entrance of the estate housing some rented apartments and Shalom Dental Clinic said to belong to the wife of the former SSG. Although no life was reportedly lost, the impact of the blast created a small hole and shattered the ceiling of the security post, while the gate of the building, located a few distance from the Government House, was partly damaged. Our correspondent gathered that the IED comprised an electric wire connected to two Tiger batteries of 1.5 volts each bound with a masking tape. Confirming the incident, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, said that preliminary investigation showed that the device was thrown into the mini estate from outside. He also disclosed that the IED had been recovered by the Bomb Disposal Unit for analysis while “some suspects” had been arrested. While urging politicians in the state to put the interest of the citizens above their personal interest, Adebanjo stated that the command would continue to campaign against violence ahead of the 2015 general elections. But Pastor Ize-Iyamu, who is also a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, has alleged that the state government and the All Progressives Congress was responsible for the incident. Ize-Iyamu, who claimed that his wife was the target of the blast, said that he had faced criticisms from the both the APC and the state government since he decamped from the party (APC). “Last night at about 10:40 pm I got a text from of the tenants there saying that a bomb has been thrown into my wife’s clinic, so I immediately called a tenant who told me what just happened. Packed into a cramped cabin with a few hundred strangers at 30,000 feet, tensions are already running high. On top of that, there’s always that passenger. The one who makes everybody else uncomfortable by screaming at the crew. Or the one with the children running amok. Or the space invader. With disgruntled travellers taking to the internet in droves to out bad behaviour on planes on the viral ‘Passenger Shaming’ website, Tripit.comcompiled the top 10 most annoying plane behaviours whichDailymailalso reported . *.Rudeness to staff:It’s always uncomfortable to listen to someone berating hard-working crew members. Passengers in the Tripit.comsurvey nominated ‘being rude to staff’ as the most annoying bad behaviour, well ahead of other irritants such as taking up too much space and being too loud. *.Refusal to caution children when disturbing other passengers:When a child has been screaming and kicking the back of your seat for five hours straight, you’re in for a long flight. Not many can begrudge a distressed infant, but patience often wears thin when a parent makes no effort to placate children: 57 per cent of respondees said that lack of care by parents is their pet plane peeve. Parents of difficult children may want to follow the lead of Christina Diaz and Michael Rubinstein, who made headlines around the world in 2012 when they handed out goodie bags to fellow passengers to ‘apologise in advance’ for their 14-week old twins disturbing them. The thoughtful gesture was well-received by passengers and a picture of the gift went viral. *.Crowding seat/ hogging ‘extra’ middle seat:Scoring a free seat next to one is like winning the golden ticket these days, with airlines code-sharing flights. So, when you hit the jackpot, it’s only fair to share it with your row-mate, rather than claiming it as your personal storage area. If you’re lucky enough to get an entire row to yourself though, settle in smugly and stretch out. If you’re nestled in on a full flight, remember your armrest manners. Make sure everyone has one to themselves before resting your elbows. Space hoggers make more than half of their fellow passengers angry. *.Talking loudly:In a confined space, the entire cabin can be privy to your conversation if not kept below a discreet decibel, which will not make you popular. One unruly passenger learned the hard way when her loud antics were chronicled via Twitter by Modern Family editor Ryan Case recently. On an overnight flight, Case live-tweeted her experience sitting behind a drunken passenger, or, as Case calls her, ‘the worst person in the world,’ revealing every eyebrow-raising snippet of her conversation. The gems included ‘Sorry, it’s my first time not in first class’, and ‘I have a very racist view of all Middle East.’ *.Blocking the baggage claim area:The bad behaviour doesn’t necessarily end upon landing. Everybody wants to get out the airport as quickly as possible, but those who block the baggage carousel by standing an inch away drive 44 per cent of respondees mad.Perhaps enforcing a ‘stay behind the yellow line’ rule like on tube platforms could prevent the super keen from making you miss your suitcase. *.Reclining their seat into your seating area:The reclining seat is a hot topic in travel at the moment. Brawls over the use of the controversial Knee Defender have caused two flights to be re-routed, with a handful of passengers arrested. A recent survey revealed that 75 per cent of British travellers want to see reclining seats banned. The general rule to follow seems to be: Reclining on long-haul flights only, and not during meal times. *.Carrying stinky food:Airplane food is widely considered unsavoury enough. But bringing one’s own snacks on board should be limited to inoffensive, fragrance — free options. Nobody wants to sit next to a hot takeaway — particularly if it is being sitting in one’s carry-on for a few hours. *.Hogging the overhead storage:While some low-cost airlines enforce a ‘one bag rule, there still never seems to be enough space in the overhead compartments. Storing wheelie cases above and handbags under the seat in front is encouraged, but not always followed by some. Forty-three per cent agreed that people who take up all the storage space are the worst. *.Rushing to disembark before passengers in front:While the majority of passengers adhere to the courteous method of disembarking, clearing out row by row, there is always one impatient person who believes their time is more precious than everybody else. A travelling barging their way past the more patient passengers is irksome for 41 per cent of those surveyed. *.Blocking the aisles during a flight:Everybody likes the freedom to roam about the cabin to stretch their legs and use the bathroom. But sometimes, one gets stuck mid-wander. Whether it’s someone hovering to chat to a friend, or allowing their legs to overhang the seat into the aisle, 41 per cent of passengers say: ‘Keep it in your own row.’ |
There are strong indications that the 218 schoolgirls abducted six months ago in Chibok, Borno State, by the violent Boko Haram sect may be released on Monday following a ceasefire agreement between the sect and the Federal Government. The Federal Government, through the Nigerian military, had on Friday said that it had agreed to a ceasefire with the violent sect and that the Chibok girls would soon be released. The deal was announced by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh. The military has struggled to defeat Boko Haram sect which began attack against Nigeria since 2009. The Islamist militant group sparked global outrage six months ago by abducting more than 200 girls from the town of Chibok. Badeh said, “A ceasefire agreement has been concluded between the Federal Government and the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal Jihad (Boko Haram).” The President’s Principal Secretary, Hassan Tukur, toldBBCFocus on Africa that an agreement to end the Boko Haram hostilities had been reached after talks with the violent group. He said the agreement was reached after one month of negotiations in Saudi Arabia. The negotiation was said to have been headed by the Chadian President Idriss Deby. Tukur said Boko Haram announced a unilateral ceasefire on Thursday and the government had responded. He said, “The Boko Haram members have assured us that they have the girls and that they will release them. I am cautiously optimistic.” Tukur and Danladi Ahmadu, who calls himself the Secretary-General of Boko Haram, toldVOA’sHausa-language service that the abducted girls would be released on Monday in Chad. The girls are alive and “in good condition and unharmed,” Ahmadu said. President Goodluck Jonathan has faced strong criticism over a deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, with villages in the North-East Borno State inaccessible due to the threat from Boko Haram. The group had demanded the release of detained extremists in exchange for the schoolgirls. The Defence Headquarters, however, directed all service chiefs to stop further offensive against the Boko Haram sect. The Chief of Defence Staff said that he had directed the service chiefs to comply with the ceasefire agreement. Badeh stated this after a three-day bilateral conference between Nigeria’s military leaders and Cameroon which focused on the coordination of trans-border military operations between the two countries. The Cameroonian military was led to the conference in Abuja on Wednesday by the country’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Maka Rene Claude. Badeh said, “Without any prejudice to the outcome of our three days interactions, and the conclusions of this forum, I wish to inform this audience that a ceasefire agreement has been concluded between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Allul Sunna Li Daawa Waj Jihad. “I have accordingly directed the service chiefs to ensure immediate compliance with this development in the field.” Decisions reached at the conference include joint border patrol, intelligence sharing and how to handle internally displaced persons. The decision to suspend the counter terrorist operation followed a ceasefire agreement between the Federal Government and representatives of the Boko Haram Sect at Ndjamena, the Chadian Capital. The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, said that what the “ceasefire means is that there would be no fire.” When one of our correspondents asked him if the current development would affect troop deployment in the North-East, he stressed that there would be cessation of hostilities in consonance with the terms of the agreement. Saturday PUNCHlearnt that the Ministry of Special Duties led by Saminu Turaki and the Office of the National Security Adviser played a crucial role in the realisation of the ceasefire agreement. An intelligence source said that the decision to negotiate in earnest with the Boko Haram was taken during the President Jonathan’s meeting with his Chadian counterpart, Mr. Idris Derby, in Ndjamena, on Monday, September 8, 2014. It was learnt that the President visited Chad with his National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, because of the security dimension to the mission. The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed; and the Director-General of National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed, were also in the President’s entourage. Meanwhile, some prominent Nigerians have expressed divergent views over the ceasefire agreement. A Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Fred Agbaje, who hailed the agreement, said though the development was a little belated, it would save the lives of Nigerians and enhance the protection of their property. He said, “I welcome the idea of ceasefire between the Federal Government and Boko Haram because we still have over 200 of our girls with the group. So, it will be foolhardy not to accept such an arrangement. “It shows that force sometimes cannot bring the best solutions. If you check history very well, war has never completely solved any problem. Force could bring about temporal solutions, but not lasting and enduring reliefs. Fighting terrorism is very expensive and so it will be economically wise to sheathe the sword and embrace dialogue. “But we have yet to see the terms and conditions of the agreement, so we must be careful how we thread. In my humble opinion, both the Federal Government and the terrorist group must be honest and honour the terms of the agreement so that peace can be achieved. But the Spokesperson for the Catholic Church of Nigeria in the North-East, Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie, asked the Federal Government to be cautious and not trust the insurgent group totally. “Terrorists will always be violent and they are not the type of people that should be trusted,” he said. The cleric, however, asked the Federal Government not to rely on the agreement until the terrorists surrender themselves to the military. Obasogie said, “We have to be cautious of this ceasefire agreement; terrorists are not a group of people to be trusted. Our people are still in the hiding, being displaced. “Until they all return home safely and the insurgents surrender themselves, they should not be totally trusted.” A Lagos-based security expert, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, said it was not yet time to rejoice over the ceasefire agreement. He asked the military to be cautious before it started jubilating because the insurgent group had not kept promises in the past. He said, “They are not known for keeping their end of the bargain, but let us wait and see what happens. This agreement should be matched with action. These people should not be allowed to go free no matter what. “Their flags should be burnt up. Their leader is dead and they could have agreed to ceasefire because of that. We have to take precaution. They should not take us unawares again.” The leader of BringBackOurGirls campaign team, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, expressed hope that the ceasefire would be sustained. She said in her Tweet, “Like many of you, I simply cannot afford another heart shattering episode and so we are praying that what we are all reading is true.” Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana, said, “Whereas the authorities of the Armed Forces have already announced a ceasefire, we are yet to hear from the Boko Haram Sect. So, we hope it is not a unilateral ceasefire. I also hope that the ceasefire is total on the part of the Federal Government and the implication of that is that it should lead to suspension of further trial of soldiers for mutiny. “If you are suspending further hostilities with the Boko Haram sect, that means there is no point any longer in putting the boys on trial for asking for more arms to fight the sect.” But Nigeria’s Chief Security Spokesman toldAFPon Friday that there was no deal with the Boko Haram sect for the release of Chibok schoolgirls after the Federal Government had said an accord had been reached. Asked if a deal for the release of the girls had been finalised, the head of the National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, said, “No. That part has not been agreed but we are inching closer and closer.” “Already, the terrorists have announced a ceasefire in furtherance of their desire for peace,” Omeri said in a statement. Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, had yet to make categorical statement over the ceasefire deal as of the time of filing this report. The governor’s media associate, Isa Gusau, said the governor would make comments at the appropriate time. A human rights lawyer, Wahab Shittu, had described the news of the ceasefire agreement between the Federal Government and Boko Haram as a “welcome development”. He expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations would lead to the release of the abducted Chibok girls. He said, “Every option that can be explored in getting this insurgency to come to an end ought to be welcomed by all Nigerians. This is an insurgency that has destroyed valuable lives and properties. It has also impeded development and constituted a threat to the democratic process, so everybody is concerned. If there is ceasefire, it is something that all of us should celebrate because today, Nigerians live in fear.” Meanwhile, parents of the abducted girls, represented by theBringBackOurGirlscoalition, have expressed doubts over the ceasefire arrangement. The parents noted that there had been similar promise of ceasefire in the past which did not amount to anything, but expressed the hope that the current efforts would yield results and lead to the release of the schoolgirls and other victims. The Media Coordinator of the group, Mr. Rotimi Olawale, said the negotiation should also extend to every victim of Boko Haram abduction, including men, women and girls in the sect’s captivity. Meanwhile, a Nigerian journalist, Ahmad Salkida, and activist, Shehu Sanni, who had been involved in negotiations with the extremist sect expressed doubt over the ceasefire deal. Salkida, who doubted the deal on his Twitter page, said, “I guess Nigerians are tired and as such, any news that offers respite on this protracted war between Nigeria and Boko Haram is always welcomed. Sadly, anybody that despises such good news becomes Nigeria’s enemy. “But the leadership of Boko Haram is said to be miffed that a nation of the size and magnitude of Nigeria, with high level of intelligent people is being easily encased in deceit and nobody seems to be asking tough questions. “What is most worrying here is that the government at the highest level and intelligence has embraced this ‘good news.’ This shows lack of understanding of the reality that this is an ideology that can only be neutralised after long hard work that has yet to start. “It also appears that the government is more interested in shadows and bubbles than in substance and clear-headed engagement with the group.” Sani said his contacts told him Boko Haram members had denied Ahmadu as their representative. He said on his Twitter page: “All my attempts to confirm the ceasefire deal did not produce any result. My sources are telling me that they don’t know who that person is. For Boko Haram to reach any ceasefire, such information must come from the leader of the group. “Any statement that is not coming from the leader of the group cannot be said to be credible and will not be complied with by the group members. The leader is the only person they respect and listen to.” An analyst for theBBC, Will Ross, said it was a surprising development given the fact that there had not been any indication of negotiations going on between the Federal Government and the militant group. He said, “Nigerian officials had not given any indication that negotiations with Boko Haram were taking place. Even though there had been rumours of talks in neighbouring Chad, this is a very surprising development. “Many Nigerians are extremely sceptical about the announcement especially as there has been no definitive word from the jihadists. “The military has in the past released statements about the conflict in North-East Nigeria that have turned out to be completely at odds with the situation on the ground. “So many here will only celebrate when the violence stops and the hostages are free.” Sources: www.punchng.com/news/bharam-ceasefire-sect-to-release-218-chibok-girls-on-monday/ |
A middle-aged woman, Mrs. Patience Igho, recently narrated how she escaped from kidnapper’s den in Agbara forests at the outskirts of Ogun State. The traumatized Igho said she could not believe what she saw inside the forest after she was drugged inside a commercial bus on her way to Boundary Market in Ajegunle, Lagos. The distraught woman, who sells frozen fish toldCrime Guardthat she saw no fewer than 200 victims, who were held hostage. Consequently, she called on the relevant security agencies to quickly intervene and rescue the helpless people. Narrating her ugly experience, she said:“The incident happened in the early hours of the day. I left my house with N130, 000 to be deposited in the bank. I boarded a commercial bus with four women and two men already seated. I cannot rightly recall the registration number. I later found myself in Agbara forest. It was after I regained consciousness that I found myself with over 200 people. One of them told me that I was at Agbara forest. The person told me that some of them have been there for over seven months. Threats “While I was still trying to ascertain where I was, our captors came and asked us to drink water from one dirty container which I refused. They threatened to kill me if I insisted but I vehemently refused prompting them to vow that I must be the first to be sacrificed. Fortunately after the threats, they left me for another victim stating that nothing will stop them from sacrificing me. Later, they stripped all of us naked and shaved our hairs after which they placed them inside a pot. “They also brought another set of victims into the forest at about 9:00am. I was able to know the time from a big wall clock that was placed before us. These new set included a young lady and a man and their hairs were already shaved. They later shaved also our private part and armpit in preparation for their ritual.’’ Another victim’s experience “ Few hours later, I was surprised to see another victim, a woman, who said she had spent over months in captivity. She boldly commended me for not taking the water they offered me saying that if I had taken it, I would have been unconscious and accept every of their demands ,adding that she is a mother of four. She said she was captured with her four children on their way to church on a Sunday morning. Three of her children, she said, had been slaughtered.’’ “What followed later was that they brought the boiling pot where our hairs were thrown into and tried to force us to recite some incantations. Earlier before that, I had seen a young lady who was brought before the pot to recite such words bearing a tattoo of scorpion on her right arms but she screamed Jesus! When the man that was performing the incantation saw the tattoo on her body, he refused to perform the rites on her, saying her blood was contaminated already. At this stage, we noticed that there were different buckets for sensitive parts like head, ears, private parts, etc. they were placed on top of a slab which butchers use in killing animals. The bold woman told us that politicians and ritualists thronged to the place to buy those parts. My Freedom “While all these were going on, I did not know that one of the ritualists was watching me. At some point when I refused to recite those words, the man who looked like their leader ordered that I should be beaten up which they did. While they were at it, I shouted severally, Jesus! And I even called many names ascribed to God. Fortunately, on hearing my strident voice calling on the creator, their leader rushed out and ordered the boys to dispose me at the nearest Bus-Stop.’’ “The gang members threw me inside the bus and dropped me at the back of Agbara market. Still in shock, I trekked from that market to Federal Government College, Ijanikin to beg for money from my relatives who stay in that area. It was like a nightmare but I experienced it and survived by the special grace of God. I will not wish my worst enemy to go through what I passed through because it was so traumatizing . That is why I am passionately calling on security agencies to move into action and raid all those hide outs because some people are still there helplessly waiting to be rescued.” Source: www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/escaped-kidnappers-den-ogun-state/ |

Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, was agog on Wednesday as preparations for the inauguration of Ayodele Peter Fayose as the new governor of state gathered momemtum. At the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Fayose Campaign headquarters in the Government Reservation Area, and the streets of Ado-Ekiti, the supporters of the governor-elect were seen readying themselves ahead of the ceremony. Our correspondent also noted that a well-decorated stage had been created at the centre of the stadium. The stage faces the equally well-decorated state box. Fayose visited the stadium in company with security agency chiefs to inspect the extent of preparation for the ceremony which will be graced by either President Goodluck Jonathan or Vice-President Namadi Sambo and the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party. It was not clear as of 7pm on Wednesday if outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi would attend the ceremony that will be conducted by the state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola. A rehearsal for the inauguration with the Chief Registrar of the Ekiti State High Court, Obafemi Fasanmi, also took place in the city whose hotels and guest houses had been fully booked. Artisans, okadariders, market men and women as well as commercial motorists and motorcyclists were seen buying different colours of uniforms at the Fayose campaign headquarters for the inauguration. The governor-elect, it was gathered, had distributed cows and money to various groups in the state to enable them to celebrate his second coming as the state governor. As of 4pm on Wednesday, the Government House was solemn asThe PUNCHlearnt that Fayemi, his family members and aides moved out their personal belongings around noon. Fayemi, who lifted the curfew he imposed on the state following an outbreak of violence, was said to have left for his Isan-Ekiti home town in the Oye Local Government Area of the state. Fayose had in a live television interview on Tuesday said he had invited all the clerics in the state to join him in cleansing the Government House. He said, “I am expecting all pastors; they would first be at the new State House to carry out a thorough spiritual cleansing before we enter the building on Thursday (today) after the inauguration. “ Even if they are up to 1, 000, they should all come for the spiritual cleansing before we enter the building. But any pastor who isn’t sure of his calling shouldn’t come.” Heavy presence of security personnel was visible on major streets of the city and the stadium’s entrance. The operatives were drawn from the Nigeria Army, Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Prison Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Service. The Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Babayemi, in a statement said the Command had put in place adequate and comprehensive security measures to prevent breach of law and order. He said, “The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu , has ordered the deployment of adequate manpower and equipment to police all the events. “Bomb Disposal Units, Counter-Terrorist Units, Police Mobile Force and Swift Response Squad in addition to conventional and plain- clothes detectives have been strategically positioned to ensure an eventful and crisis-free ceremony. “The police personnel have been mandated to embark on thorough stop and search of persons and vehicles to prevent troublemakers from infiltrating the venues.’’ Lakanu, according to him, appealed “to the good people of the state to support and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a hitch-free ceremony.” But in spite of the lifting of the curfew by Fayemi, the National Youth Service Corps in the state on Wednesday discharged members who were initially scheduled to end their mandatory national service on Thursday(today). It was gathered that the decision was informed by what the NYSC management considered as rising tension in the state. The Governor-elect, in an interview with journalists, lamented that the transition team raised by Fayemi did not cooperate with his inauguration team. Alleging that the Fayemi administration was leaving an empty treasury, he appealed to workers in the state to call off their strike as a mark of honour for him. He assured all groups and associations, party supporters, civil servants including teachers of adequate care during his tenure. Fayose said, “I don’t want to join issues with anybody. I only believe that a chapter has come and gone. A new chapter will be opened tomorrow (today). “The outgoing government has refused to cooperate with us in terms of inauguration and my findings have confirmed that no government account has up to N1m. “The Head of Service has been here and some permanent secretaries and I asked them. No government account presently in Ekiti has a minimum of N1m “It’s unfortunate that this is happening but we were voted into power to find solutions to the problem and as soon as we take over the government, we shall find solution to it.” Fayose refused to comment on whether he would probe the former administration or not. He said, “On the issue of probe, I won’t talk about it now until we take over the government officially. We can’t talk about it until I assume office. I have not taken the handing over note. So until then, I don’t want to join issues with anybody.” Asked if he would move into the Government House on Thursday (today), he replied, “Entering Government House is not an issue. Anywhere I am is a government house immediately I take over. I can be here and act as a governor. But events from tomorrow (today) will give us a direction.” A member of the Transition Committee, Owoseni Ajayi, also alleged that the inauguration team put in place by the outgoing governor did not cooperate with them. Ajayi said, “They have not connected with us. They didn’t allow the transition committee to work. They didn’t discuss with us. We wanted to use the Government House for reception but they said no. “The people sent to set the stage were supposed to be there a day before but the government did not cooperate.” Asked if Fayemi had indicated interest to attend the ceremony, he replied, “Is that the kind of person that will come; somebody that we just wanted to use a venue and he refused. “He said the Government House belongs to him until midnight of October 15. That the Governor-elect should write to the permanent secretary. They were hostile throughout. “We are perturbed about their attitude because we are all Ekiti people.” Fayemi, on his last day in office, announced the lifting of the curfew he imposed on the state. He made the announcement in his final valedictory speech on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti. The outgoing governor said, “In the spirit of transition and in the light of the relative peace that has endured in the capital, I hereby announce the lifting of the curfew hitherto imposed on the capital based on the advice of the security agencies. “I urge all citizens/residents to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law.” Fayemi had on September 26 declared a curfew, saying “there would be no movement between the hours of 7pm and 7am every day till further notice.” Hi action followed the violence that erupted after the murder of a former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Omolafe Aderiye, by gunmen. Fayemi, who said it was a great honour and privilege to serve his people, added that he had delivered on the promises he made on assumption of office. He said, “As I step away from office, I can say the promises we made are the promises we kept. We have made Ekiti a much better place than we found it. “Our eight-point agenda was not a campaign gimmick. It served as our compass. We kept faith to the direction in which it pointed. “In governance, we professionalised the civil service, including the elimination of costly ghost workers. We embraced public participation in the budgetary system and in allocation of community projects. “We enhanced Internal Generated Revenue without raising the tax rate. “Regarding infrastructure, we pledged road construction and rural electrification. We vowed an Urban Renewal Initiative, including affordable housing. Ninety per cent of Ekiti roads are now motorable. “In agricultural development, we inaugurated programmes like the agri-business summit and youth commercial agricultural development programme among other initiatives. We also promised cottage industries in the Agro-allied sector and skills development in Agriculture. “In education, we brought free primary and secondary education and teacher merit reform. We enhanced the instruction and infrastructure of our universities. “These were the promises made and these are the promises we kept. Lamenting that the Federal Government had on more than one occasion failed to meet its statutory obligations to states, he stressed the need for states to reduce their dependence on federal subventions. He said his administration overcame the challenges by raising its IGR by blocking leakages and ensuring effective revenue collection. The governor, however, said that the state still had a long journey “to democratic prosperity.” He added, “The good thing is that it is a journey, not a destination. There is an ever present danger that threatens to overwhelm us. It is dark and foul because it abhors our progress and good condition. “We have lit a lamp of progress in our land. This light may flicker for a season; I am convinced its flame will never be extinguished for it is the flame of human decency, justice and compassion,” he said. Fayemi appealed to the people to embrace peace irrespective of the political party they belonged. He warned that the good that took years to build could be wasted in an instant by the depravities of the few who are intent on plundering the state . Fayemi said, “While we have made some progress towards democratisation, the risk of radical reversal is considerable. As a people, we should resolve never to return to this dreadful malpractice. “It is possible for us to engage in competitive, partisan politics and even have intense political disagreements yet refrain from being violent and destructive. “We can be faithful to our political causes yet accord even our opponents due dignity and respect as human beings. “Our culture esteems respect, courtesy, and good breeding and these are traits we must preserve. As a people, we have sacred lines of behaviour and public decorum that must never be crossed. There are bounds of propriety that we should never transgress, no matter how intense the political disputes. The sanctity of human life must be held inviolate. “No pursuit of political office is worth a human life. Indeed, any political agenda that mortgages our humanity, whether for financial or material benefit, must be rejected. “Any agenda which turns our children into warring combatants over the crumbs of their rightful civic inheritance has to be resisted. We have to ensure that we do not foist a legacy of perpetual strife upon our children. Ekiti, the land of honour, must not become a wasteland.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/ekiti-fayemi-out-fayose-in/ |

Oyamuyefa, son of a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has been killed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The deceased, popularly known as Oyoms, was killed on Saturday in the Middle East country. The deceased’s father, who confirmed this to one of our correspondents, said, “He was killed in Dubai.” The reason for Oyoms’ killing has yet to be established, but family sources alleged on Monday that the deceased was assassinated. Two different versions have been given concerning where the former governor’s son was killed. The first version, one of our correspondents learnt, was that Oyoms was found dead by the staircase of his father’s house in Dubai. However, the second version alleged that the deceased’s body was found in his hotel room in Dubai, giving the impression that he might have been assassinated. It could not be established whether Oyom’s father had travelled to Dubai to take possession of his son’s remains. Indication that he might not have travelled out of the country emerged when he responded to a text message sent to his mobile phone on Monday by 12noon by one of our correspondents. It was later learnt at about 2pm that the bereaved father had left for Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, in company with one of his sons to probably board a flight to Dubai. However, as of the time of filing this report, the circumstances leading to Oyom’s death remained sketchy. Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said he received with shock and sadness the news of the death of Alamieyeseigha’s son. He said he and his wife, Patience, shared in the grief of the deceased’s family. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President pledged the support of the Federal Government as the family strive to unravel the circumstances surrounding their son’s death. The statement read, “On behalf of his family and the Federal Government, President Jonathan extends heartfelt condolences to Oyamuyefa’s father, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and his entire family on the untimely loss of a very dear son in the prime of his life. “The President and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, share their pain and grief over the death of Oyamuyefa in circumstances that are still unclear. “President Jonathan assures Chief Alamieyeseigha and his family of the full support of the Federal Government as they strive to unravel the true circumstances of the young man’s death. “He prays that God Almighty will receive Oyamuyefa’s soul and comfort his grieving parents and siblings.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/alamsson-killed-in-dubai-jonathan-mourns/ |
A former Vice President Atiku Abubakar paid the stipulated N27.5m to pick the presidential nomination form of the All Progressives Congress on Monday. Atiku picked the form after a short ceremony at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja. The former vice president was the first to formally declare his intention to contest the presidential ticket and also happened to be the first to pick the nomination form. Atiku said, “Mr. Chairman, I need not let you know my political antecedents as far as the provision of a level playing field for every member of this party because that is the only thing or one of the things that will make us different from the so called ruling party. “Anybody who believes he has a democratic right to exercise should be given that opportunity to exercise that right. It is left to the members of this party and the Nigerian public to make a decision. “I don’t think it is the responsibility of any one of us as an individual or group to decide for this party or its membership for the people of this country. Yes, as leaders, we have a responsibility to guide those coming behind but the guidance should be based on this firmly rooted democratic principles. “Mr. Chairman, therefore, it is my singular honor and privilege to hand over to you or your representative two receipts: one, presidential expression of interest and the second one, presidential nomination form all totaling N27.5m and I believe I am now entitled to receive my forms and then go onto the next stage.” The APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, prayed that God should give to Nigerians a President that would defend the interest of Nigeria, which other Africa nations would look at the country before other in the comity of nations. Earlier, the former Vice President unveiled plans by his campaign to host a policy review summit at the Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, on theOctober 27, 2014. Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said he had no grouse against anybody in his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but that he will not accept a wanted drug baron as the PDP leader in his region, the south west. In a statement made available to newsmen, Obasanjo said the issue bordered on principle and morality. The former president and former PDP Board of Trustees chairman was apparently responding to series of appeals by party leaders, including Senate President David Mark and party chairman Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu who had recently paid him a visit at his Ota Farm home, pleading with him to forgive the party and return to its fold. They also asked him to lead President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign. Obasanjo said: “There are, for me, issues of principle, morality, honour, integrity, commitment and character which are paramount. For instance, as a former president of Nigeria, the chairman of West Africa Commission on Drug and a member of Global Commission on Drug, I cannot accept that the zonal leader of my political party and, worse still, in my zone, will be an indicted drug baron wanted in America. “How do I explain that to friends outside Nigeria? This is only one of the many issues that I have pointed and still pointing out.” Obasanjo, however, called on the leadership of the party to do the needful on the issues he had raised. “I have national and international standard to maintain and reputation to keep and sustain. For these reasons, I opted to remain active only at the ward level of the party till the leadership does the needful,” Obasanjo said. Prince Buruji Kashamu, allegedly wanted in America for drug trafficking, was appointed chairman, Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the PDP in the South West by President Goodluck Jonathan. On his status in the PDP, Obasanjo said much of what has been reported in the media was misrepresentation and declared that he never left the PDP, therefore, making it wrong for people to be calling him back. “There are misunderstandings and misrepresentations which some of those appeals and pleas manifested; hence this explanation from me. Talking of inviting me back to the PDP is wrong and it is a great misrepresentation as I have never left PDP, and I will never leave PDP,” he explained. “I have said it before and I will say it again: I rose to become the president of Nigeria on the platform of PDP and, for that reason alone, I will remain a card-carrying and ward-active member of PDP for as long as I have to be a political party member. “Secondly, nobody has personally offended me as a result of my membership of PDP. If, however, anybody or group feels offended by my continued membership, I will offer an unreserved apology but continue to remain in the party. I have had occasions to say to the president, the Senate president and the party chairman separately that I have no quarrel with any individual or group in the party.” Obasanjo’s Statement During last week when I was in South Africa as the Chairman of AU Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan and while with my fellow Commissioners, we were deliberating on how to help that new country out of its problem of security and violence, I received avalanche of news and cacophony of appeals and pleadings from some quarters of PDP leadership. There are misunderstandings and misrepresentations which some of those appeals and pleas manifested; hence this explanation from me. Talking of inviting me back to PDP is wrong and it is a great misrepresentation as I have never left PDP and I will never leave PDP. I have said it before and I will say it again, I rose to become the President of Nigeria on the platform of PDP and for that reason alone, I will remain a card-carrying and ward-active member of PDP for as long as I have to be a political party member. The Lagos State Government said it has set aside Wednesday, October 15, 2014 to be observed as a Horn Free Day. The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, made this known in his Alausa office on Friday. The Commissioner said that the observance of the Horn Free Day is expected to reduce noise pollution from the use of the horn, improve road courtesy, improve lane discipline and draw motorists’attention to the importance of road discipline and mutual respect for other road users. He said that Governor Fashola has challenged road users in Lagos State to observe a Horn Free Day, which is designed to complement the on-going efforts by the Lagos State Government in the provision and upgrading of traffic infrastructure across the State. The activities lined up towards the Horn Free Day, would involve active engagement of radio and television stations in generating discussions challenging road users to observe a Horn Free Day. It would also include endorsement by relevant stakeholders, as well as ember months campaign by the Vehicle Inspection Service to advocate, educate and enlighten road users on road safety.
