Politics / PDP To Yayaha Bello:accept Defeat, Stop Wasting Kogi Money On Fruitless Campaign by LilychiLily001: 7:49pm On Oct 23, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised embattled Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to read the handwriting on the wall, do himself good by accepting defeat and stop wasting public funds on fruitless campaign.

The PDP affirms that it already has the support of over 70 percent of registered voters in 18 out of the 21 local governments across the state, even ahead of its official campaign flag-off ceremony in Lokoja on Friday, in preparation for PDP’s inevitable landslide victory at the November 16 governorship election.

The party notes that though it has uncovered plots by the APC and distressed Governor Bello to frustrate the flag-off ceremony, our members and supporters, in their millions, are already several steps ahead, ready to confront and stop the APC and Governor Bello on their trails.

Since we kicked off our grassroots campaigns in the last few weeks, the PDP has continued to receive overwhelming support, solidarity and endorsements from all segments of the voting population including political leaders and community groups, workers, pensioners, students, youth groups, business groups, professionals, and a host of other Kogites who have become despondent with the excruciating misrule of Yahaya Bello.

This army of the Kogi people is fully rallied against any plot by the APC to derail any stage of the electoral process and they will not allow any infringement by anybody, no matter the machination.

Governor Bello and the APC ought to have known that it is all over for them. The spontaneous public jubilation that greeted the retrieval of PDP’s mandate of Barrister Shaba Ibrahim, for the Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency, at the Court of Appeal, despite the machinations of the APC, reinforces the imminent triumph of the PDP and the people in the November 16 governorship election.

The people of Kogi state are ready for this election and cannot wait to kick out Governor Bello and vote in their candidate, PDP’s Engr. Musa Wada as their next governor.

The PDP therefore calls on all Kogites; including all those that have been impoverished by Yahaya Bello; those who were unjustly sacked, those who were orphaned and widowed by this administration as well as all those desirous of seeing a new Kogi state to continue in their determination to rescue the state from the repressive rule of the APC.

Politics / PDP Cautions Banks On Loans To Gov. Bello...warns APC Leaders by LilychiLily001: 4:13pm On Oct 22, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alerts commercial banks in Nigeria to be circumspect in giving loans or any form of credit to the wasteful administration of out-going Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, as the state is not wiling to bear any responsibility for such facilities when Governor Yahaya Bello vacates office in a few months time.

The party draws the attention of commercial banks to the fact that Yahaya Bello cannot scale the hurdles of the November 16 governorship election following the consensus by the people to vote in the PDP candidate, Engr. Musa Wada, as their next governor.

The PDP cautions financial institutions to note that Governor Bello and his administration now have a Caveat Emptor badge and that the people of Kogi are not ready to inherit their financial liabilities.

The party alerts that the caution is sequel to information to our disposal on alleged intentions of the Bello administration to mislead commercial banks into granting it huge loans, under certain hazy items and conditions, after which the money would be frittered by APC leaders and cronies of the administration.

Our party wants the nation to note that the people of Kogi state can no longer accept any further mortgaging of the future of the state by Yahaya Bello, whose administration has gone down as the most profligate in the history of our nation and which cannot account for over N700 billion of Kogi fund released to it in the last four years.

Anybody or organization in league with Yahaya Bello is directly supporting the torturing and impoverishing of the people of Kogi state by the Bello administration, which has manifested so much insensitivity in owing workers as much as 36 months salary arrears.

On our part, the PDP is committed to running a prudent, transparent and productive administration where the welfare and economic empowerment of the people is overriding; where salaries are paid promptly, where infrastructural development in critical sectors take center stage and where accountability is the watchword.

In this regard, the PDP urges all financial watch organizations to join the people of Kogi state in monitoring all monetary activities of the Bello administration as well as all inflows into the state coffers, particularly, the N10.06 billion federal refund, which the PDP insists, must be declared and directly channeled for the payment of salaries so as not to allow the ring of APC leaders achieve their plot of diverting and stealing the money for their selfish purposes.

Politics / Kogi Guber: Steer Clear Of Kogi State, PDP To El-rufai by LilychiLily001: 7:27pm On Oct 20, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counsels Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Kogi state National Campaign Council, to steer clear of the state as the people abhor incitements and threats in the November 16 governorship election.

The PDP cautions that the people of Kogi state are already aware of individuals in the APC known for issuing threats as well as the “body bag” metaphor and will never allow such incitements to pervade the November election.

The PDP says Governor el-Rufai must have realized that whatever his party, the APC, perpetuated in Kaduna state in the 2019 general elections can no longer be replayed, not even in Kaduna state or any other state of the federation, not to talk of Kogi state, with its long standing history of tough resistance to forceful occupation and control.

Governor el-Rufai therefore should not bother to lead a failed team of an expansionist force into a lost battle. He should rather use the opportunity to counsel Governor Yahaya Bello to accept his rejection by the people of Kogi state and be ready to face the burden of a crushing defeat on November 16.

The APC knows that Governor Bello has gone down in history as the worst governor ever in Nigeria; who cannot point to any development project or initiative in governance and under whom a once vibrant and productive state has been reduced to the poorest and most dejected in our country.

If the APC means well for Kogi state, the party should not be wasting its time to campaign but rather counsel Yahaya Bello to use the remaining days of his abysmal tenure to show remorse, pay up the 36 month arrears he owes workers and pensioners, restitute for those who died because of his suppressive rule and get ready with his handover notes.

The APC Campaign Council should come to terms with the fact that the people of Kogi state had made up their minds to repay Yahaya Bello in his own coin by kicking him out of office.

Therefore, no amount of apologies, intimidations, violence, vote buying and "body bag" metaphor can change their resolve or save Governor Bello from defeat in this election.

Politics / PDP Condemns Attack On Wada, Killing By Apc,says Assault Shows APC Fears Defeat by LilychiLily001: 7:02pm On Oct 20, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemns, in totality, the attack on its Kogi governorship candidate, Engr. Musa Wada and the killing of innocent Kogi citizen on Saturday by thugs alleged to be working for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party says the attack shows that the APC and Governor Yahaya Bello have become discomfited over Engr. Wada’s soaring popularity across Kogi state which signals an impending inevitable electoral defeat for the APC at the November election.

The PDP invites Nigerians to note how the APC attacked the venue of our governorship primary and having failed to stop us from producing a credible candidate, have now resorted to making attempts at the life of our candidate, knowing that he is already coasting to victory.

The PDP however cautions the APC to note that there is a limit to what the people of Kogi state, who have made up their minds to vote in Engr. Wada as their next governor, can stomach, particularly at this critical time.

If anything, this attack on our candidate has further united the people of Kogi state behind our party, in their readiness to take back their state, no matter the machination of the APC.

The APC is therefore cautioned to rein in their thugs as any further attack on our candidate or any member of the PDP for that matter, portends consequences of unimaginable proportion.

The APC knows that our party has the highest demography of members, supporters and volunteers in all the electoral units, wards and local governments across the state. Such an array should not in any way be undermined.

The PDP states that resorting to violence cannot help the APC in this election. This is so because Kogi state is home to PDP and the people have made up their minds to replace Governor Yahaya Bello with Engr. Wada on November 16, and nothing can change that resolve.

Our party therefore calls on the Inspector General of Police to guarantee adequate security ahead of the election and ensure that the APC does not in any way, achieve its aim of disrupting the electoral process, knowing that it will be defeated

Politics / The Story Of Mamman Daura, Nigeria's De Facto President Who Rules From The Glass by LilychiLily001: 4:49pm On Oct 19, 2019
A few days before it became grist for Nigeria’s overactive social media rumor mills, a retired general and contemporary of Muhammadu Buhari’s told me, in the course of a 30-minute phone conversation, that Mamman Daura, Buhari’s nephew who is nonetheless older than him by three years, had made up his mind to “get at” Aisha Buhari by arranging a quiet marriage between Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq and Muhammadu Buhari.

He mentioned this as an aside and seemed to expect me to be curious enough about what he had told me to ask further questions. But I didn’t. That appeared to have shocked him, so he asked why I wasn’t piqued by what he had told me. I said it was because it frankly didn’t interest me what Buhari did in his private space.

I am by no means claiming any moral high grounds here. I think it’s legitimate to be curious about the private lives of public officials whose decisions have consequences for millions of people, but that’s not my own inclination. I care about the private affairs of public officials only if their private affairs impinge on public policy.

That was why, in spite of pressures from friends and social media followers, I kept a studied silence on the social media frenzy over this issue. As I told the general, it means nothing to me that “Buhari has been dating Sadiya since CPC [Congress for Progressive Change] days”; that’s his private business, which, in my opinion, we should be decent enough to respect.

I’m more worried, I told him, by the fact that Sadiya Umar Farouq is minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development even when, according to a two-year-old Daily Nigerian investigation titled “INVESTIGATION: Unmasking the real #Dabinogate beneficiaries,” she allegedly diverted and misappropriated 200 tonnes of date palms (dabino) famously donated to internally displaced persons in the northeast by the Saudi Arabian government in 2017.

She was Federal Commissioner in charge of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons at the time. According to the Daily Nigerian, she “diverted [the 200 tonnes of date palms] to Zamfara State and kept [them] in a warehouse, while the rest was distributed to traditional rulers.”

To steal from humanitarian donations to poor, vulnerable internally displaced people is the vilest, most ignoble, least defensible form of villainy there can ever be. But Buhari has rewarded her eye-wateringly larcenous treachery with an appointment as minister of—of all ministries— Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development, a previously non-existent ministry!

Why would anyone create a ministry of “humanitarian affairs” and “disaster management” for a person who has a history of insensate cruelty toward people who are victims of disasters and who desperately need but have lacked humanitarian assistance? It’s like appointing a wolf to keep guard over sheep.

Curiously, Nigerians are more interested in her history of alleged romantic entanglements with Buhari (which should be no one’s business) than the fact of her heading a ministry which her past eminently disqualifies her for.

Anyway, why have I chosen to comment on the embarrassing public fight by Buhari’s obviously dysfunctional family even when I initially had no interest in it? Well, it’s because the way Buhari manages— or, more appropriately, mismanages—his immediate family provides insightful clues to how he “ungoverns” Nigeria.

Buhari is a feeble, indecisive, infirm, emotionally dependent person for whom the idea of taking responsibility is alien. People who know him intimately have told me that his psychological and emotional makeup is unsuited for leadership. He is not only a loner; he always relies on others to take decisions for him.

People close to him have told me long before now that Buhari has an innately and enduringly infantile craving for a paternal dictatorship. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the fact that he lost his father at an early age and didn’t quite experience sustained paternal guidance. But Mamman Daura has been Buhari’s emotional and intellectual fortress and his father figure, although they are only about three years apart in age. Daura makes momentous decisions for Buhari and rules on his behalf through Abba Kyari, his protégé.

Mamman Daura is the first son of Buhari’s oldest half-brother from a different mother. That makes Buhari his uncle, and him Buhari’s nephew. Many people, particularly from the South, have a hard time wrapping their heads around this. Well, I have a similar situation. My late father married a younger woman and had his last child when he was 80, so my first daughter is older than my youngest half-brother. My daughter still struggles to call him her uncle.

This is important because Mamman Daura and his sidekick Abba Kyari are the power behind the throne. They constitute the nucleus of the ill-famed Aso Rock cabal that acts as Buhari’s puppeteers. In my October 22, 2016 column titled “Aisha Buhari and the Evil Aso Rock Cabal,” I pointed out that “Buhari is held hostage by an evil, sneaky, corrupt, vulturous, and conniving cabal that ensures that his wife doesn’t see him even in the ‘kitchen,’ the ‘living room,’ or ‘the other room.’

“The BBC interview was Aisha’s vigorous ventilation of pent-up anguish against a cold, calculating, and corrupt cabal that has made Buhari a stranger to his own wife.” It’s the fifth most widely read article of all time on my blog because although it was cryptic, many people, particularly in the North, knew what I was talking about. I was told that the cabal actually met to discuss who divulged this information to me.

It’s supremely emblematic that Mamman Daura (along with his entire family) lives in a wing of the Presidential Villa called the “Glass House,” according to his spoilt, entitled daughter by the name of Fatima Mamman Daura. “Glad house” is a metaphoric expression that means a position or a situation that invites critical public scrutiny. Derived from the English proverb “Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones,” it calls attention to hypocrisy.

And Mamman Daura is a dyed-in-the-wool hypocrite. Although he is a monogamist, he wanted to marry a second wife for his younger uncle until he was shamed into abandoning it. Similarly, in “Editing a Government Newspaper in Nigeria,” a chapter he contributed to a book titled Reporting Africa edited by Olav Stokke, he rhapsodized over editing the New Nigerian that was “owned and subsidized by the Government yet we criticize their action.” He characterized this as an “anomaly neither properly understood by the people generally nor particularly liked by some government officials.” Yet, he is now the intellectual driver of a government that supervises one of the most brutal strangulation of the news media and of freedom of speech itself.

I am glad that Mamman Daura, Nigeria’s de facto president, is now coming out of the shadows. You can’t live in the Glass House, throw stones at Nigerians, and continue to live in the shadows.

Nonetheless, Mrs. Aisha Buhari herself isn’t the victim— and hero of democracy— she’s positioning herself to be. Her fight against Mamman Daura (and Abba Kyari) is mostly over access to the spoils of governance.

She has been given several concessions by the cabal, but she always wants more. For instance, her older brother by the name of Ahmed Halilu was recently quietly appointed as one of only two executive directors at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting PLC, among several concessions she has been given. So don’t cry for her. Cry for Nigeria.

Politics / Achuba: Governor Bello Now Desperate, Clinging On Straws – PDP by LilychiLily001: 2:20pm On Oct 19, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mocks Kogi state Governor Yahaya Bello over his desperate bid to use underhand measures to forcefully remove the Deputy Governor, Hon. Simon Achuba, saying the governor is now clinging on straws.

Our party holds that by coercing the state House of Assembly against the deputy governor even when the State Judiciary Panel acquitted him of all allegations, Governor Bello only confirms that he has lost public trust and now desperately resorting to dirty politics and crafty methods for survival.

This action of trying to remove the deputy governor via unconstitutional methods and in total disregard to the verdict of the judicial panel is, in itself, a gross misconduct and grave constitutional violation for which the state assembly, as an institution, ought to have removed Yahaya Bello as the governor of the state.

The PDP however alerts that the next victim of such underhand methods would be the state assembly itself, which now appears to be on the way to being used to enact draconian rules to suppress and intimidate the people of Kogi state, since there is no way Yahaya Bello will win the November 16 election and return to office.

It is however instructive to state that the action of the House of Assembly, in yielding to Yahaya Bello’s antics, has further reduced Kogi state to a butt of jokes among compatriots in other states of our federation.

What it means is that Yahaya Bello can wake up tomorrow morning and shut down institutions of government, including the state legislature, the judiciary and even the civil service and become a law unto himself.

However, whether the State House of Assembly has any morsel of courage left in its chamber to protect the state and her people or not, Governor Bello will surely face the judgment of the people on November 16, where he will be kicked out of office through the ballot box.

It is also public knowledge that Yahaya Bello seeks to repress the deputy governor over the latter’s decision to expose the impunity and corruption in the Bello administration which has brought so much suffering to the people of Kogi state in the last four years.

What Nigerians expect is for Governor Bello to respond to the allegations by the deputy governor instead of this resort to bullying and attempts to remove him through unconstitutional method; a scheme that cannot stand.

Our apprehension is that Governor Bello, in his desperation to cling unto power, even when he has been rejected by the people, is now turning Kogi state into a state of “anything goes.” We therefore call on all compatriots to condemn and resist the reprehensible actions of Governor Yahaya Bello.

Nigeria is a nation governed by law and no body, no matter the desperation, should be allowed to turn her, or any part thereof, to a Banana Republic.

Politics / Winning The War Against Drug Abuse Remains The Core Mandate Of Next Level-buhari by LilychiLily001: 5:33pm On Oct 18, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari says winning the war against drug abuse remains one of the critical elements of the Next Level mandate of this administration.

Receiving the report of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse, PACEDA, Friday in the State House, President Buhari reiterated the commitment of government to the welfare of the citizenry by fighting the scourge of drug abuse.

“Winning the war becomes one of the critical elements of the Next Level mandate of this administration. As a government, we have the responsibility to ensure the security and well-being of our people.

“Our findings have shown that it is more difficult to bring down crime rate to acceptable levels without clearing our country of substances abuse,” the President said.

President Buhari, however, realising the enormity of the menace, solicited for cooperation of all and sundry. He called on all well-meaning Nigerians and international partners to join hands with relevant government agencies in the fight against drug abuse.

While thanking the committee for its timely and diligent prosecution of the assignment, the President assured that the matter was of utmost importance, and the report would be studied along with the recommendations.

Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd) had told the President that since the committee was inaugurated in December, 2018, it interfaced with a wide spectrum of stakeholders including Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Non-Governmental organisations, Civil Society Organisations, Faith-based Organisations, professional bodies, international partners and members of drug user communities with their parents, teachers and care givers.

He added that the assignment, which took members to all the geopolitical zones of the country, confirmed the fears of President Buhari that Nigeria had a very strong drug problem that needed to be tackled as a national emergency.

He, however, said the key to tackling the menace is a formal launch of a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) as part of declaration of a state of emergency on the menace as well as the establishment of a National Drug Control Commission.

Crime / A 27 Year Old Ezeocha Arrested In Louisiana For $22,250 Online Scam by LilychiLily001: 10:02am On Oct 16, 2019
A Nigerian Vincent Izuchukwu Ezeocha has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $22,250 online from a victim in Acadiana, Louisiana, in the United States, the Attorney General Jeff Landry said Tuesday.

Ezeocha, 27, was arrested on one count of bank fraud, one count of felony theft, and one count of money laundering.

The arrest was the result of work by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation, Louisiana State Police and Homeland Security Investigations.

Ezeocha has the double problem that he has been staying in the US illegally after his visitor’s visa expired.

He was staying in Chicago before his arrest.

Operating out of Chicago, Ezeocha allegedly contacted the victim while purporting to be a New Mexico merchant with whom the victim had previously done business.

Ezeocha allegedly arranged for another transaction and used Chicago bank accounts to route the illicit funds to himself. The New Mexico merchant had previously suffered a network intrusion that compromised the merchant’s email database.

“This case should be a reminder to businesses and consumers to take a few extra steps to keep their information safe online,” added attorney General Landry. “And this case is further proof of the need for comprehensive immigration reform.”

On Monday, the police stopped Ezeocha for speeding in Tangipahoa Parish and determined Ezeocha was wanted by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation for felony charges in Lafayette Parish, at which time he was booked in Tangipahoa as a fugitive for LBI.

Politics / Sanwo-olu Writes Assembly, Seeks Approval For N250bn Loan by LilychiLily001: 5:59pm On Oct 15, 2019
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has sought the endorsement of the House of Assembly for a loan of N250 billion.

The governor’s letter was read on the floor of the House during plenary on Tuesday by the Clerk of the Assembly Mr. Sani Azeez.

According to the governor’s letter, the loan was broken down as: a fixed rate bond of N100 billion from the capital market and an internal loan of N150 billion.

The governor explained that the budgetary provisions of recurrent and capital budget of ministries, departments and agencies were not likely to be utilized before the end of the year, saying that N34.050 billion could be re-ordered.

The the letter, the governor stated that his administration was constrained by the lack of revenue for the remaining months of the year and that it would not be in a position to propose a supplementary budget, which informed the recourse to re-ordering 2019 budget.

He said the budget as at 31st August, 2019 had a 71 per cent overall performance, which was below the set target of 100 per cent.

“Further analysis shows that the recurrent expenditure stood at 80 per cent while capital expenditure was at 64 per cent performance, portending a 49:51 capital/recurrent ratio against the target of 55:45.

“It should be noted that some of the major MDAs that are supposed to implement the capital expenditure are performing below expectation, while others have almost exhausted their budgetary provisions,” Sanwo-Olu explained in the letter.

According to the governor, all other arms of government should cooperate with him by ensuring that they improve on spending in priority areas, adding that the administration was desirous of keeping its electoral promises to the citizens and had resolved to take advantage of clement weather condition in the latter part of the year to complete various projects.

The projects, he said would benefit from the re-ordering were: completion of Lagos-Badagry express road; Agege Pen cinema overhead bridge; Agric-Isawo road; Bola Ahmed Tinubu-Igbogbo road; rehabilitation of schools; initiate and complete smart city project and zero tolerance for portholes, among others.

Politics / Senate Issues Two Weeks Deadline To Mdas To Defend Budget by LilychiLily001: 5:31pm On Oct 15, 2019
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday issued two weeks deadline to Federal Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to defend their budget before its Standing Committees.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said any agency that refused to appear before the relevant committee to defend its budget during the period would not have revenue allocation for next year.

However, the Senate debated expensively on President Muhammadu Buhari’s proposed budget of N10.33 trillion on Tuesday.

According to Senator Ajayi Boroffice, the Federal Government should bring back the nation’s cocoa and groundnut pyramids in the north and that more attention should be paid to technology.

Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege said “For this budget to succeed, certain things must be put in place; that is an enabling environment. Oil companies should relocate their offices to the oil producing areas to be able to create jobs for our people & it would enhance non-disruption from our youths. We also have mineral deposits aside oil, this must be looked into to increase revenue.”

Senator Tolu Adebiyi said “Government needs to bring more private sectors to capital projects. The sector should be opened up for investors to come in. The VAT of 7.5% does not look excessive. The government needs to do asset re-engineering to yield more revenue.”

Politics / Governor Wike Inaugurates Task Force For The Recovery Of Government Properties by LilychiLily001: 5:23pm On Oct 14, 2019
Rivers State Governor,  Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has inaugurated the State Task Force for the Recovery of Government Properties,  with a charge to members of the Task Force to work diligently for the state.

Inaugurating the committee on Monday,  Governor Wike said several Permanent Secretaries and top civil servants have retired from service,  but are still illegally occupying Government Quarters.

He noted that several attempts to ensure that they vacate Government Quarters,  so that serving officers can reside in such houses have met with resistance from the retired senior civil servants.

“You are by this inauguration required to recover all Government Properties illegally occupied by some persons.

“There are many civil servants who have retired from service,  but are still occupying Government buildings several years after retirement.  This has made it difficult for those in service to have official quarters allocated to them”, he said.

The Governor told the members of the Task Force that they will face challenges while carrying out their responsibilities. He advised them to be firm.

He assured that the Rivers State Government will provide the required security and logistical  support for them to carry out their functions.

Governor Wike said that some top civil servants have gone as far as taking illegal measures to own Government Properties.  He noted that in some block of flats, some have gone to illegally acquire Certificate of Occupancy.

“If you are a civil servant,  you already know when you are to retire.  Therefore,  you have to plan for retirement.

“It is regrettable that some civil servants even fail to maintain Government buildings where they reside.  Do this assignment diligently.  Except there is a clear court order, recover Government Buildings that have been illegally occupied “, he said.

The Governor also charged the Task Force to locate Government Lands that have been illegally occupied and recover same.

Responding,  Chairman of the Task Force for the Recovery of Government Properties,  Rufus N. Godwins appreciated Governor Wike for the confidence reposed in the members to carry out the important responsibility.

Godwins,  who is also the Head of Service, assured the Rivers State Governor that the Task Force will locate, identify and recover all Government Properties illegally occupied.

He said where the Task Force meets resistance,  it will recommend prosecution of the affected persons to the office of the Attorney General of Rivers State.

Foreign Affairs / Spain’s Supreme Court Sends 9 Catalan Leaders To Prison by LilychiLily001: 9:25am On Oct 14, 2019
The Spanish Supreme Court on Monday imposed prison sentences ranging from nine to 13 years on nine Catalan separatist leaders for sedition over their role in the region’s 2017 failed bid for independence. The sentences were lower than demanded by the prosecution, which had requested up to 25 years behind bars for the former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras.

The court sentenced Oriel Junqueras to 13 years of prison on grounds of sedition and the misuse of public funds, said the ruling. It also handed 12-year sentences to three other former regional ministers.

In the dock were 12 former Catalan politicians who were being tried for their actions in the 2017 attempt to break away from Spain after an independence referendum that was ruled illegal.

Three of the accused were not jailed, being found guilty of disobedience but not sedition.

Crime / N20 Million 'gift' Tears Niger Delta Youths Apart by LilychiLily001: 7:48am On Oct 14, 2019
Many Uzere indigenes of Isoko South local government area in Delta
state have fled their homes following a bloody crisis currently
rocking the community over a N20-million oil largesse released to the
community by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, (NPDC),
operators of the Oil Mining Lease, OML 28.

The N20 million meant for skill acquisition for the youths in the area
was reportedly diverted by the community's President General, Felix
Ewenede, in connivance with some leaders in the community.

The crisis, it was reliably gathered, started on Wednesday and
continued until Sunday, with a combined team of over 200 security
operatives drawn from the army, navy, and mobile police taking over
the entire community.

At least, 10 persons were hospitalized following the crisis.

Some indigenes, who fled the community, told SaharaReporters that Sam
Ogri, Columbus and Henry Etuwede were behind the vicious attacks
witnessed in the community.

They accused the trio of funding and supplying some community youths
with guns and other dangerous weapons to attack those opposed to the
"diversion and embezzlement" of the N20 million.

An indigene, speaking on the condition of anonymity said, "Ogri, has
been a major financier of these armed boys unleashing terror on the
community. Can you imagine that on Thursday, these armed boys were
exchanging gunshots face to face with the army and mobile police in
broad daylight?

"As we talk, army, navy and mobile police have taken over our
community with these armed boys shooting day in, day out non-stop,
destroying properties and looting homes in the night. Some of us slept
in the waters until dawn because the community is in water because of
the flooding. Everybody has run to other neighbouring communities
because of the crisis."

An indigene Uzere and current President General of the Isoko apex
union, Isoko Development Union, Iduh Amadhe, told SaharaReporters from
his hideout, linked the crisis to bad leadership, greed and hunger for
illicit wealth in the community.

Amadhe explained further: "The community's president general is the
major cause of the crisis because he wants to grab every kobo that
comes into the community from multinational oil companies. You can't
withstand the shooting in that community by some armed youths chasing
away perceived enemies and engaging security agencies in a gun duel.

"The recent N20-million largesse from the NDPC for skill acquisition
for the youths that he diverted is the cause of this crisis that has
rocked the entire community since Wednesday. Like some of us, we are
still calling for peace and a combined team of security operatives
have already moved into the community."

It was gathered that Felix Ewenede, the community's president general,
was arrested and detained at the state police headquarters, Asaba, for
interrogation.

Reacting to the allegation of financing and supplying guns to some
youths, Ogri said, "I am a peaceful man and will never be involved in
anything that will cause a crisis in my own community."

Meanwhile, at a security meeting organized by the Isoko South
community and attended by traditional rulers, community leaders,
councillors, the president general of IDU, area commander, Ozoro area
command and heads of security agencies in the local government,
presided over by the council chairman, Itiako Ikpokpo, the crisis in
Uzere was condemned in Uzere.

As of the time of filing in this report, peace had yet to return to
the community and many indigenes who fled had yet to return to their
homes.

The state commissioner of police, Adeyinka Adeleke, did not respond to
telephone calls to get his comment on the situation neither did he
respond to text messages sent to him.

Politics / Dino Melaye Joins Nollywood With ‘Equity Unbound' by LilychiLily001: 10:26am On Oct 12, 2019
Senator Dino Melaye joined Nollywood just few hours after the Appeal Court affirmed the decision of the Kogi Election Petition Tribunal nullifying his victory.

The outspoken senator will be featured as one of the key actors, in a Television series titled ‘Equity unbound,” an idea of the Pillars of Hope African Initiative (POHAI).

Other prominent actors including Linc Edochie, Victor Decke, Chief Bruno Iwuola and Paul Sambo will also be featured in the TV series.

Addressing a world press conference, the Country Director of POHAI, Chinyere Onyemekara, said the main focus of the project is on ‘equal rights and sociai justices in Africa,’ using Nigeria as a case study.

“Equity unbound TV series is a soap opera that holistically ex-ray the quality of justice system in Nigeria and its attendant effect on both the masses, the elites and the government.

“It is a mind-blowing expository drama presentation of the human rights challenges of an ordinary common Nigerian. A good example of the issues treated in this series is the recent report by BBC, on the pervasive threat of “sax for grades and sex for Marks” in Nigeria’s institutions of learning.

“A 120mins pilot episode of Equity unbound TV series has been shot with so many celebrity Actors and with state of the art equipment cum professionais and highly motivated crew.

“The idea of this is to use drama as an effective tool of communication to correct the ills and promote an acceptable social justice system in Nigeria.

“Gentlemen of the press, you will agree that Africa and Nigeria in particular is far behind in terms of perfect justice system and equitable society.

“We at POHAI has taken it upon ourselves to expose these shortcomings for the purpose of strategic attention and correction:

“We hereby call on members of the fourth estate of the realm, civil society groups, the international community, cooperate organizations, Nigerian government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to support in whatever way possible to bring this humanitarian project to fruition,” Onyemekara stated.

Speaking on why he joined the drama, Senator Dino Melaye, expressed happiness to be part of the series that will expose unjust act in the society.

Melaye said: “I’m happy to have participated in the series, especially as it will help correct social problems in the country. I am not a greenhorn in acting because I emerged as the best actor during my NYSC program.

“I am ready to serve this country in any capacity and I feel that participating in the series is another way of contributing my quota in correcting the social ills in Nigeria.

“If I have such opportunity again I won’t hesitate to take it,” Melaye stated.

The drama’s director said that Senator Dino Melaye acted the role of Joshua in the series, which is an assemblage of professional actors and politicians.

“The drama is all about tackling social vices in the society. The drama, he said captures such issues like corruption, injustice, bad governance and so on.”
