So, our local government decides to play God and resurrect a hospital that’s been dead for seventy-five years. They painted, patched, and hired staff. I was one of the lucky (or unlucky) recruits, employed as one of only two lab technicians.

Three weeks into my new job, on the night shift, I was bent over my microscope staring into the world of malaria parasites, when I heard someone enter. The security man, as usual, had vanished into thin air.

“Who’s there?” I asked.

A man’s voice, like he'd been smoking for decades, answered: “I came to run a test.”

Nothing strange except it was 11:35 PM. We don’t see routine patients at that time. But I told him to wait, and after a few minutes, I stepped out.

It was when I glanced at the doctor’s name that something crawled under my skin. Only two doctors worked in that hospital, on day and night shifts. I knew them like I knew my name. The name on the form belonged to neither.

But that was not the most disturbing part of the paper.

Still, I forced composure. “Please enter, and let me take your blood sample?”

He turned to me with a stare so sharp it felt like I had asked him for a kidney. Silence. Then finally, he said, “Nope, follow me to the ward.”

That was weird. But everything about this man has been weird, and now creepy, so I didn't ask why.

I asked which ward. He pointed. And I could immediately sense something was off. Because his finger was directed at the psychiatric block. The one still abandoned. The one sealed since before independence.

I quickly gave him back the paper, muttered that I’d join him, and the second he was out of sight, I ran to the gate.

The security man was chilling by the gate, as if nothing in this world concerned him. I cursed him, dragged him back to his post, and told him what happened. His reaction was zero. He just said, “He won’t come back.”

And he didn’t.

When morning came, out of morbid curiosity, I strolled past the front of the psychiatric ward. It was empty and silent and almost falling apart, like you would expect.

Months passed. Nobody mentioned anything strange. I told nobody about it.

Then, one day, I casually mentioned it to one of our doctors in the lobby. He wasn't amused or scared by my story; it was like showing someone a meme they have seen a million times.

In fact, he described the man’s appearance to me. Detail for detail, as if he had seen him just yesterday.

“How do you know?” I asked as I started feeling ice in my veins.

He laughed. The kind of laugh that doesn’t reach the eyes. Then, suddenly, he went cold, looked straight at me, and said, “Because I ordered the tests.”

At first, I thought it was a bad prank. Until he mentioned the one thing I had left out. The date on the yellow form.

And before I could even recover, he added one more thing, something I had heard before.

“Room 2418.”

My legs turned into spaghetti as I tried to rush out of the lobby. He looked at me with the "What a pity" look. Then, almost casually, he said.

Hello guys, I humbly need you all view on this. All my life I have always wanted to be a lecturer, so early this year (January, 2025), I finally got awarded PhD in Applied Mathematics. Though I had my first degree in Mechanical Engineering, masters in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics and PhD in Applied Mathematics with specialization in fluid dynamics as well. During my study, I run a tutorial centre and making cool money from teaching mechanical engineering and mathematics students. So after obtaining my PhD I started sending out my CV to people I know in institutions, though most are of the opinion that I shouldn't have switched from mechanical engineering to mathematics that it will give me problem.
Around January 2025, immediately after my PhD oral examination, my supervisor linked me up with the rector of a polytechnic to go submit my CV to him, which I did, and according to the rector, he told me that it is not matter of CV for now, because most people that he employed as assistant lecturers, they really don't have much to pay them and the governor of the state has promised that he will do recruitment for the polytechnic around March because of accreditation processes, so during that recruitment, I can be employed. Fast forward to March, the accreditation went on and I wasn't informed if the recruitment was later done (you know all this underground stuffs), so I later got my mind off the institution and look at for another university in other states which I was promised also that once there is directives to start recruitment, I will be employed.
On the 3rd of july, 2025, I got a call from someone from the polytechnic, telling me to come to the personnel department as soon as possible with my credentials, when I got there, he collected photocopies of my credentials and on sighting the mechanical engineering as first degree, he said which department do I want and I said mathematics and he said why not mechanical engineering where I had my foundation, so I said I preferred mathematics because since I switched to mathematics, I have published 11 academic journal with 7 of them Scopus rated in Q1, and I have also attended 7 seminars with certificate to back them up, and I have also been a member of the Nigerian mathematical society (NMS), so he said they will get back to me. Since then I haven't heard anything. After a month, I made a call to the person that I submitted my credentials to at the personnel department, that I haven't heard from them and he said "sebi we are the one that called you ourself, the process is ongoing and once we are ready, we will definitely call you back". But I haven't heard from them still. It is almost two months now since I submitted the credentials and I am already losing faith.
I am just confused, could my changing from engineering to science be hindering me from getting a lecturing position? If it is, does it make sense to go back and obtain another master and PhD in mechanical engineering and just forget about the mathematics? Or just forget about lecturing and focus on my tutorials, meanwhile I make more than 500k monthly from the tutorial because it is in school area, but I don't want to be a tutor forever, not even with a PhD.

There are online teaching platforms that will help you make more money than the lecturing work will ever pay you.

You're already making 500k monthly, Na money be the Koko. Even after you get fulfilment as a lecturer, you'll still start looking for a way to make the money.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has blamed Nigeria’s misfortune, rising poverty, corruption and economic stagnation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, and other members of the newly formed coalition.

Felix Morka, spokesperson for the ruling party, made this claim in an interview with Arise TV on Sunday, adding that members of the coalition “brought Nigeria on its knees.”

“All of the faces you see parade themselves as members of coalition, look very closely at them. Keep it on your minds my fellow compatriots, and many are the architects of Nigeria’s misfortune that has not become totally generational,” Mr Morka said.

The APC spokesperson added, “They are the architects of Nigeria’s economics stagnation. They are the architects of Nigeria’s incredible dimensions of corruption and underdevelopment and extreme poverty.”

Though President Bola Tinubu had a short stint at the Senate in the 90s before the military regime truncated Nigeria’s democracy, Mr Morka said the president is emerging in national politics for the first time to solve the problem members of the coalition who have dominated the political space at the national level for years.

“These are the men who constructed what this president is trying to solve. Let me say this, this president has only been the president of Lagos State. He has operated only in the south west and has never been on national stage. He never held any political position at the national stage. This is his first time of his emergence on national stage. Yet the people who have saturated the national stage dare to say he is president is the reason Nigeria is on its knees,” Mr Morka said.

The APC spokesperson statement followed the adoption of African Democratic Congress as official party for 2027 election by coalescing opposition politicians, including former Senate President David Mark, former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, former Osun Governor, Raud Aregbesola and others.

Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the ADC, could not be reached for response to Mr Morka’s claim. A WhatsApp message sent to him seeking comment was read but not replied at the time of filing this report.

Contrary to Mr Morka’s claim, the International Monetary Fund reported that poverty and insecurity have risen under Mr Tinubu’s watch, though lauding its economic policies.

The World Bank’s Africa Pulse report of April 2025 also stated that Nigeria, under Mr Tinubu, has the highest number of extremely poor people globally, warning that more Nigerians will be plunged into poverty by 2027.

With inflation at 23.7 per cent, a drop from 34 per cent after rebasing the economy, under Mr Tinubu, Nigeria recorded the largest increase in acute food insecurity globally in 2024, according to the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises published by the Global Network Against Food Crises in collaboration with the Food Security Information Network and UNICEF.

I was driving yesterday afternoon, when I was stopped by the police, they inspected my papers and noticed that I bought my car at a car stand "used" so they asked me for a document named "authority to sell" I was surprised because I haven't ever had of that before, even though this Is my 4th car. They then proceeded to ask me for agreement paper between the first owner and the previous owner that sold to me. Which I don't have, but I have every other documents from the immediate owner, and have none from the very first owner, except the motor receipt, that they used to buy the motor from car stand.

They took my car to the station, and demanded 400k, I pleaded with them for almost an hour until they accepted 80,000. They told me they need cash, I withdrew the money and gave them the cash.

When I got out of the station I confided with a friend and narrated everything to him as it happened and asked him for help In other to avoid such a scenario from happening again.

He told me that, the paper that I wrote and signed on the car stand before leaving with the car, on the day I bought the car "aggremenr paper" was what led them asking for the "authority to sell" paper. He told me that nevertheless, they have no business asking me for the agreement paper between the old, and immediate seller that sold to me and the other previous owner.

He then advised me to go and re_do another agreement paper, the ones they normally type with old type writer, and take it to who sold the car to me to sign, so that when next they see me they won't ask me for authority to sell, as my agreement papers won't indicate that I bought the car from a car stand "used" but it would seem like I bought the car directly from a regular user.

I did as he told me but I'm still worried, as they would still stop me to take more money from me in the future because I don't have the agreement paper between the immediate previous owner and the former owner that sold to him. They're always fond of asking for such, all my previous cars I have the aggrement papers of previous owners to current owners that sold to me, please I need advice on how to go about this agreement papers, I have gone to the car stand severely and they gave me the contact of whom they bought the vehicle from before selling to me, I called and he told me that he had traveled out, I need help please, help me.

Would an affidavit of "loss of agreement paper from who sold to me directly and the first user solve this issue? Please help I'm so worried.

I’ve collected the numbers of more than 12 girls in my church — and every single one rejected me. Not even friendship, just straight rejection.

This opportunity means the world to me as it is the first step towards my dream of becoming a qualified nurse and contributing to the healthcare sector both at home and abroad.
