PoliticsIPOB Threatening My Life Because Of Peter Obi – Reno Omokri Raises Alarm by LIVE08(op): 2:39pm On Jul 22, 2022
Peter Obi: IPOB threatening my life – Omokri raises alarm, dares secessionists’ group

A socio-political activist, Reno Omokri has raised the alarm alleging that the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are threatening him over comments against the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Omokri asserted that there is no difference between the secessionist group and the supporters of Peter Obi.

Omokri who vowed that IPOB cannot silence him, said they have disguised themselves as ‘Obidients’.

He wrote, “I criticised Peter Obi, the next day IPOB’s official lawyer blasted me? Then I started receiving threats left, right and centre?

“Who do you think you are kidding? Me? At night, in their covens, there is absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between IPOB and the core Obidients!. You can just imagine these IPOB people disguised as Obidients thinking they can silence me.

“Are you guys okay? Me? The vast majority of those who are enjoying the social media cruise with you may not know who you guys truly are, but I do!

“If you, the IPOB team at the core of this Obidient movement want to allow yourself to be deceived by these people who are only jumping on your train because they want to trend, that is your headache.

“But if you come after me, make sure you kill me. Because if I survive”.

PoliticsPeter Obi: 100 Million Poor Nigerians Make Up My Political Structure by LIVE08(op): 5:38am On Jul 22, 2022
100m poor Nigerians make up my political structure — Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, said yesterday that the 100 million Nigerians living in poverty made up his political structure.

Despite a strong support base on social media, Obi’s presidential campaign had been criticised for lacking real-life structure, as critics of the former Anambra governor have said without a nationwide grassroots support base, his chances of winning the 2023 presidential election was slim.

But reacting to this yesterday in Makurdi, Benue State, after meeting with the state governor Samuel Ortom, Obi said all underprivileged Nigerians were his supporters.

“I have said it before when people talk about structure, that my structure [is] the 100 million Nigerians living in poverty. That’s five million people unemployed.

“Those people who are finding it difficult to live. Nigerians are here today spending over 100% of their money on feeding, that is my structure. And above all, the most important structure is the Almighty God.”

in his remarks, Governor Ortom said the objective to salvage Nigeria must trump party politics, adding that he believed Obi was qualified to take the helm of affairs of the nation.

“Where we are today, we must work towards working together to ensure we rescue Nigeria and rebuild it. I think Peter Obi’s credentials are very clear and everybody knows.“

“If God decides that it’s him, then nobody can stop him. If God decides it’s somebody else, nobody can stop him. This is a welcome development, and I believe he will reach out to other presidential candidates of other political parties,” Ortom said.

64-year-old female politician wins presidential election in India

A 64-year-old woman politician, Droupadi Murmu has won presidential election on Thursday to make history of becoming the first tribal leader to be elected as the President of India.

Murmu is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand between 2015 and 2021 and was picked as the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Alliance in the 2022 election.

According to Times of India, Murmu won by an overwhelming margin against her contender, Yashwant Sinha after receiving over 64 per cent valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the electoral college.

She will succeed Ram Nath Kovid to become the 15th president of India.

Report said that Murmu had sealed her victory in the presidential election over opposition Sinha by crossing the half-way mark and polling well over 53% votes by the end of third round itself.

In the end, the total value of first preference polls she garnered were 6,76,803, or 64% of the total votes while Sinha got 3,80,177 votes.

She will be the first President to be born after independence and is the youngest to occupy the top post. She is also the second woman to become the President.

Speaking about the historic moment, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi said Murmu’s victory reflects her early struggles, rich service and exemplary success which motivate Indian people.

“India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President! Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat,” Modi wrote on Twitter.

“Droupadi Murmu Ji’s life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden,” he added.

Sinha conceded defeat after third round of counting and congratulated Murmu on her victory.

“I join my fellow citizens in congratulating Smt Droupadi Murmu on her victory in the Presidential Election 2022. India hopes that as the 15th President of the Republic she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour,” Sinha said on Twitter.

PoliticsShettima: 'They Are Not Big Names'- Tinubu's Campaign On Hiring Fake Bishops by LIVE08(op): 7:45am On Jul 21, 2022
Shettima: ‘They are not big names’ – Tinubu’s campaign on hiring fake bishop

Tinubu Campaign Organisation, TCO, has debunked reports making the rounds that fake bishops were hired to attend the unveiling of Kashim Shettima.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, unveiled Kashim Shettima, a Northern Muslim as his running mate amid controversy surrounding the same fate ticket.

The event had the presence of some unpopular Christian clergymen and women who dressed in cassock like Catholic bishops.

Footages of the clerics who were alleged to be fake bishops are currently trending on all social media apps.

A cross section of Nigerians have continued to knock the ruling party for playing game with Christians amid protests against the choice of Shettima.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, had in a statement on Wednesday disowned the bishops, saying they are not known bishops and have no church.

CAN challenged APC to reveal names of the fake bishops and the church they are pastoring.

However, in a move to clear the air, the TCO through its Director of Media and Communication, Mr. Bayo Onanuga said the bishops were not hired.

According to him, the clerics are patriotic Nigerians who believe in the unity of the country, stressing that they (bishops) are not big names in Christendom yet but coming up.

He said, “We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians to believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.

“They are church leaders who genuinely believe that Nigerians must eschew politics of hatred and religious bigotry and rather embrace politics of peace and nation building.

“We, therefore, deplore the hysterical twisting of the presence of these men and women in cassocks and the false accusation against our candidates, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Shettima”.

Nairaland GeneralTotal Blackout As Electricity Grid Crashes To Zero by LIVE08(op): 4:14pm On Jul 20, 2022
Total blackout as electricity grid crashes to zeroPublished on July 20, 2022By Ochogwu Sunday

The entire country has been thrown into a blackout following the crashing of the Nigerian electricity grid.

DAILY POST learnt that the grid crashed to zero megawatts on Wednesday after it developed a fault.

The development is coming a few weeks after a similar collapse occurred on June 12 and just 20 days after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) activated a partial contract order for the Nigerian electricity market to guarantee 5,000MW and at least 4,000MW.

The grid went blank for the fifth time in 2022 at about 12 noon on Wednesday.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company made this known in a text message forwarded to its customers.

The text reads, “Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20.

“We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline”.

PoliticsBuhari Orders Ngige To Step Down From Ongoing Negotiation With ASUU by LIVE08(op): 9:55am On Jul 20, 2022
ASUU has also blamed Mr Ngige for allegedly constituting clog in the wheel of the progress of the negotiation towards addressing the crisis.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to hands off negotiations with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Mr Buhari, who gave the directive during a briefing by the heads of the various concerned ministries, departments and agencies of government on Tuesday in Abuja, also okayed the suggestion by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to take over the negotiations.

Mr Adamu was said to have complained to the gathering the reason behind his prolonged silence on the matter, saying his labour and employment counterpart had since 2016 argued “that only the labour ministry has the mandate to negotiate with striking workers unions in Nigeria.”

ASUU has also blamed Mr Ngige for allegedly complicating the crisis and making resolution difficult.

ASUU stated the position on Tuesday at a media briefing on the status of the negotiations. The union said the position became necessary as part of its efforts to clarify conflicting positions allegely linked to the union.

Adamu versus Ngige
A highly-placed source, who was at the meeting and spoke with PREMIUM TIMES in confidence, said earlier reports that President Buhari ordered the education minister to address the ASUU crisis within two weeks is inaccurate.

The source said; “The President never directed the education minister to end the strike in two or three weeks. It was the minister himself who hinted of a possibility of an end to the crisis between two and three weeks.

“But the education minister said he distanced himself from the negotiations following the position taken sometime in 2016 or thereabouts when a similar issue arose and the labour minister said it was his duty to take over negotiation and quoted some ILO provisions.”

The source said Mr Adamu expressed surprise that when his labour counterpart made the argument at a cabinet meeting at the time, none of the cabinet members contradicted him and that the President maintained silence.

“So the education saw the President’s silence as an approval of Mr Ngige’s position at the time,” the source added.

History of controversies
The latest conflict between the minister of education and his labour and employment counterpart is not new.

The labour minister had in the past criticised his education counterpart, accusing him of not doing enough to resolve the labour crises in Nigeria’s higher institutions.

In April, while meeting the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement renegotiation committee headed by Nimi Bŕiggs, a professor, Mr Ngige explained his challenges with the education ministry.

https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2021/05/193311916_329042395498306_5292976337829240480_n-750x655.jpgFile photo of ASUU meeting with the Nigerian govt delegation
In a statement distributed to the media by his ministry after the meeting then, Mr Ngige said in the December 2020 agreement, he gave the government side a timeline to return to the university unions who are their employees to sort everything out.

He said; “I started pushing to see that things were done. What the Munzali committee came up with is a proposal. Both Munzali and ASUU did not sign. At our last meeting in February before ASUU proceeded on strike, we said everyone should go back to his principal.

“As a conciliator, I have to make use of the labour instruments at my disposal. The bosses in the Federal Ministry of Education do not feel the strike. There are things that are above me. I am not minister of education.

”I cannot go to the education minister and dictate to him how to run his place. But I told ASUU that you should be bombarding them at the Federal Ministry of Education for this to be moved forward. There are many ways to do so.”

This was confirmed on Tuesday by ASUU, which said Mr Ngige had once directed the union to “picket the education ministry”.

Tuesday’s meeting
At Tuesday’s briefing, the concerned ministries, agencies and departments of government gave the status of the negotiations to the President.

Those at the meeting with the president were the ministers of education, finance, labour, and communications and digital economy, Adamu Adamu, Zainab Ahmed, Mr Ngige and Isa Pantami respectively.

Others were the Head of Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; Chairman of the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, and the Director-General of Budget Office, Ben Akabueze.

A source at the meeting told our correspondent that the President directed that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and Mr Ngige should only serve as observer and conciliators at the resolution meetings.

Education minister’s plan
The source further explained that the education minister has promised to immediately begin a series of meetings with ASUU to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.

The source said: “The minister has consistently explained that the agreement reached with the previous administration on the release of about N1.3 trillion to the university system is not realistic but that something around a quarter of such can be worked out.

“Also, in the salary structure being negotiated, the minister is open to paying a professor a salary not less than N1 million. That will be tabled before relevant agencies of government to arrive at implementable proposals so that the unions can take them to their members for consideration.”

The source said because the minister believes the lecturers are patriotic Nigerians, the matter could be resolved.

“So the President, agreed to this and asked him to take immediateaction. ”

Ministry keeps mum
Meanwhile, the education ministry has declined comment on the matter but pledged to make a statement available to the public on Wednesday.

In a telephone interview with our reporter on Tuesday evening, the Director of Press in the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, said he would not speak on the matter.

“I believe that you know this is a sensitive matter, you wouldn’t expect me to just speak to you. But I can assure you that the ministry will make a statement on Wednesday,” Mr Goong said.

ASUU maintains stand
Meanwhile, in a statement Tuesday the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, berated the labour and employment minister.

https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2020/11/IMG-20201120-WA0026-750x563.jpgEmmanuel Osodeke [PHOTO CREDIT: @ASUU.org.ng]
The union expressed reservation about Mr Ngige’s claim of being a conciliator, accusing him of taking sides.
The union said; “ASUU has always had serious reservations about the claim of “conciliation” by someone (Mr Ngige) who has taken sides in the dispute, or by an unabashed protagonist in the crisis such as the current Minister of Labour and Employment. It is antithetical to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions (98, 151 & 154) on collective bargaining and tripartism.

“The Trade Dispute Act, the principal legislation for labour relations, does not empower the Minister to assume the office of conciliator. This is to guarantee the principle of ‘’good faith’’ in negotiations, which implies making every effort to reach an agreement, conducting genuine and constructive negotiations and applying them in good faith.

“It is against the principle of natural justice and the doctrine of equality for Dr. Ngige who carries himself as if he has personal scores to settle with ASUU and shoots down the Union everywhere it matters to assume the role of conciliator.”

He said nothing concrete came out of the endless deliberations with the minister as the conciliator as he “kept approbating and reprobating”.

The ASUU president said: “It appears that Dr. Ngige has deliberately misrepresented the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) convention on the collective bargaining agreement and the roles of a conciliator to serve his propagandist interest in this matter.

“For instance, he would declare that he fully supported our demand that the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU be speedily concluded within six weeks while at the same time creating an unrealistic pathway to arriving at a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA),” Mr Osodeke said.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how the minister claimed that ASUU sat down to fix its members’ salary after asking representatives of the government’s ministries, department and agencies (MDAs) to recuse themselves from the meeting with the Nimi Briggs-led committee on renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.

ASUU strike
ASUU embarked on an initial four-week strike on February 14 but has continued to extend the strike as the union and the Nigerian government have failed to reach an agreement.

The university teachers are requesting the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement that contains its members’ conditions of service as well as the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS) to replace the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) currently in use.

ASUU alleged irregularities in the IPPIS, adding that the salary payment platform has stripped universities of their autonomy.

Politics2023: APC Muslim Youths Reject Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Ticket by LIVE08(op): 9:13am On Jul 20, 2022
2023: APC Muslim youths reject Tinubu-Shettima presidential ticket

A group, All Progressive Congress (APC) Muslim youths has rejected the choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate to the All Progressive Congress (APC), presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

According to the APC Muslim youths, they preferred a Christian political leader from the North to enhance the party’s fortunes ahead of the polls, instead of the former governor of Borno State.

Abdullahi Saleh, the leader of the group, while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday evening, explained that they were in total rejection of Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election by the party, saying that all Nigerians should be carried along in all spheres of life.

They opined that though the APC presidential candidate had the right to make decisions regarding who would be his running mate, such decisions must not be made against the collective sensibilities and against the wishes of Nigerians with diverse views and beliefs.

According to the youths, “As concerned stakeholders of the APC in the 19 Northern States in the country, we find it worrisome that such a decision could be taken without recourse to its implication on the electoral chances of the party and the attendant uproar such a decision could bring about in the country.”

The youths also noted that it was worrisome that of all the country’s political parties, only the APC presented a Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying that in their opinion, it is insensitive and a gross display of a lack of respect for their Christian brothers and sisters.

They noted that the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a Muslim from South West Nigeria, and picking another Muslim from the northern part of the country as his running mate is politically and morally indefensible.

The youths stated that they hold the firm conviction that such a move can boomerang with unpleasant consequences for the APC at the general elections, adding that there was the need for the party’s leadership to make haste to correct this error of judgment.

The leader of the group was of the opinion that in Northern Nigeria, there are credible candidates with rich credentials and with massive grassroots following that can complement the presidential ticket of the APC in the presidential elections and ensure its success in the forthcoming polls.

He stressed that as such, “the 19 APC States Northern Muslims Forum sees the selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as an aberration that should be corrected with immediate effect by the relevant authorities within the party for the corporate existence of the country.”

He explained that “the implication of non-action in this regard can only be imagined, so much so that the majority of the eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have elected to boycott the APC in protest of the disrespect and disregard to Northern Christians, whose population and relevance in the scheme of things in the region cannot be overemphasized.”

He stated that the APC must respect the religious diversity of the country.

They, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu to replace the vice presidential candidate of the APC.

PoliticsEFCC Threatened Me To Implicate Ex-President Jonathan, Adoke - Witness by LIVE08(op): 5:39am On Jul 20, 2022
The witness, who is also a co-defendant in the trial court that one of the anti-graft agency's lawyer, Bala Sanga, also threatened him to rope in Messrs Jonathan and Adoke.

A defence witness in the trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Bello Adoke, has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that an operative of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) threatened him to implicate former President Goodluck Jonathan in the alleged money laundering case filed against him and the former AGF.

The witness, Aliyu Abubakar, who is also a co-defendant in the trial, told the judge, Inyang Ekwo, on Monday that one of the anti-graft agency’s lawyer, Bala Sanga, also threatened him to rope in Mr Adoke.

He said this while being led in evidence by his lawyer, Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The anti-graft agency is prosecuting Mr Adoke who was AGF during Mr Jonathan’s presidency between 2010 and 2015 alongside a businessman, Aliyu Abubakar, on a 14-count charge.

The EFCC alleged, among others, in the charges that Mr Adoke had in August 2013, in Abuja, accepted a cash payment of the dollar equivalent of N300 million from Mr Aliyu, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 16 (2)(b) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011 (as amended).

While Mr Abubakar was also accused of accepting a cash payment of the sum of $4 million from Faman Holdings Limited, through one Abdulhakeem Uthman Mustapha, in September 2013, the prosecution told the court that Mr Adoke, made structured cash payments in tranches into his Unity Bank Plc Account No. 0020153263.

Tuesday’s trial-within-trial
Aminu Lawal, the second prosecution witness in the trial-within-trial, had on May 10 said Mr Abubakar was neither compelled to make statements nor induced to implicate others in the course of the investigation.

Mr Lawal was one of the investigators who took the defendant’s statements on December 31, 2019 and on January 6, 2020.

But at Tuesday’s proceedings, Mr Abubakar told the judge that the extra-judicial statements he made on December 31, 2019 and on January 6, 2020 were made under duress.

He said upon EFCC’s invitation on December 31, 2019, a former prosecutor in the case, Mr Sanga, threatened to detain him if he declined to make extra-judicial statements to implicate Messrs Jonathan and Adoke.

https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2021/03/Former-Nigerian-president-Goodluck-Ebele-Jonathan-750x459.jpgFormer Nigerian president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
Mr Abubakar said Mr Sanga introduced himself as the new prosecutor in the case, informing him that there was evidence showing that he (Mr Abubakar) gave the sum of 20 million dollars to Mr Adoke.

In addition, Mr Abubakar told the judge that Mr Sanga informed him that there was another evidence which revealed he (Mr Abubakar) gave the sum of 50 million dollars to Mr Jonathan.

“On the 31st December, 2019, my lawyer, Ahmed Audu, came to me and said one Ibrahim Ahmed from EFCC called him that they needed clarification from me about this case.

“I followed my lawyer to EFCC. When I got there, some of the EFCC’s staff like Ibrahim, Babangida and others came in that I must give a confessional statement.

“They said that things have changed and somebody has to record me (on video), that his name is Bala Sanga.

“He introduced himself as the new prosecutor in this case. He thanked me and said I should continue to cooperate with them and that they will help me if I continue to cooperate with them.

“He then asked me questions. He asked my lawyer to write for me and I said no that I will not make any more statement because I had already made statements which are with them.

“He said if I don’t, they will detain me,” Mr Abubakar said.

He said due to the fact that it was festive period then, he had to succumb to the officer’s instruction.

“I realised the next day was January 1, 2020, that was why I decided that they should write for me,” Mr Abubakar narrated.

Speaking on his experience at EFCC’s office, he said: “That day we went to the EFCC and they ask us to come the second day. Bala Sanga called me to one side that Alhaji, I want to help you in this case.

“He (Mr Sanga) asked how close I am to Adoke. He said you have to sacrifice somebody to be alive.

“He said there is evidence before him which he will show me at the right time; that he heard information that I gave Adoke 20 million dollars.

“I said what? How did it come?

“He said maybe because me and Mr Adoke are from the same place and that that was why I did not want to say anything.

“He also said that there is evidence before him that I gave Goodluck Jonathan 50 million dollars.

“He said if I did not agree to cooperate with him, he would charge me to court.

“So I said he should go ahead.”

Mr Abubakar said the argument by the anti-graft agency that nobody asked him to implicate anybody was untrue.

Mr Abubakar’s cross-examination
Mr Adoke’s counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, while crossed-examining Mr Abubakar, asked the witness to reconfirm his statement that Mr Sanga told him to implicate Mr Adoke and he answered in affirmative.

EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Offem Uket, during his cross-examination of Mr Abubakar, told the court that the witness’ statements of December 31, 2019, and January 6, 2020, were voluntarily made.

He said in the video clip played in the open court on the last adjourned date that Mr Abubakar did not protest against the directive by the agency’s officers on making the extra-judicial statements but the witness disagreed with Mr Uket.

Similarly, the second defence witness, Ahmed Audu, who is Mr Abubakar’s lawyer, testified in the matter after Mr Abubakar was discharged from witness box.

ALSO READ: MALABU: I’ve been vindicated by courts – Ex-Minister Adoke
Mr Audu said he wrote the statement on Abubakar’s behalf on December 31, 2019.

“(Mr) Sanga came in that day and asked my name and I said Barrister Ahmed.

“He said he was the new prosecutor in this matter and he took over from one Aliyu Yusuf.

“He said he needed some clarifications from us and my client rejected because he had written a number of statements over this matter.

“Ibrahim said anything Sanga asked us to do we should do.

“While we were there, we heard Magu (former EFCC’s chairman’s) ‘siren’ coming in and I was even sweating and I felt guilty already.

“I ask Ibrahim why did he say that anything he ask us to do, do it.

“That was how we started the statement. That was what happened that day.

“After the statement, I ask Ahmed Ibrahim can I go with my client.

“They released us around 7:30 p.m. on that day and we protested that I will not sign and my client too.

“But they said we will not go until we sign. So they ask us to come on January 6, 2020,” he said.

After the cross-examination, the judge adjourned the matter until September 28 for hearing.

The EFCC insists that Mr Adoke made cash payments that exceeded the approved threshold amounts, outside a financial institution.

The anti-graft agency listed the companies accused of complicity in the about $1.1 billion fraud to include A Group Construction Company Limited; Rocky Top Resources Limited; Megatech Engineering Limited; Novel Properties and Development Company Limited, Imperial Union Limited and Carlin International Nigeria Limited

PoliticsNigerian Government Unveils 'new NNPC' by LIVE08(op): 1:12pm On Jul 19, 2022
https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2022/03/FPCFbNCWUAwbYT3.png
The NNPC is now expected to be managed like a private sector enterprise unlike the former corruption-ridden government organisation.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday unveiled the new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, a landmark event that officially changes the oil firm from a wholly state-run entity to a commercial oil company, limited by shares.

The NNPC Limited is expected to be managed as a private energy enterprise unlike the former corruption-ridden government organisation.

The unveiling took place at the presidential banquet hall in Abuja.

“We are transforming our petroleum industry to strengthen the growth today July, 19 2022,” Mr Buhari said at the event.

“NNPC Limited now will operate as a commercial oil company with over 200 million shareholders with integrity and excellence.”

The official unveiling came weeks after the corporation transitioned into a company whose operations will be regulated by the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA). The legal transition, based on the new Petroleum Industry Act, took effect July 1.

The NNPC completed its incorporation in September last year weeks after the the PIA was signed into law by President Buhari.

The NNPC Limited was then floated with an initial capital of N200 billion making history as the company with the highest share capital in the country.

The new entity is expected to become a commercially oriented and profit-driven national petroleum company independent of government, although government bodies remain its shareholders. It will be audited annually.

PoliticsTop Nigerian Politician Who 'Controls Many Judges' Revealed By Deji Adeyanju by LIVE08(op): 7:12pm On Jul 18, 2022
2023: Top Nigerian politician who ‘controls many judges’ revealed

As the 2023 election gathers steam, a former Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Deji Adeyanju, on Monday claimed that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, controls many judges in Nigeria.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Adeyanju, Convener of Concerned Nigerians, who made this allegation in a tweet on his known handle, warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to relax, following its victory at the just-concluded governorship election in Osun State. This newspaper cannot confirm Adeyanju’s allegation though.

“The Agbado man (referring to Tinubu) controls many judges in the country. Nobody services the judiciary like him. The PDP must not go to sleep over Osun. I won’t say much on this but a word is enough for the wise. Insult me everyday, I will still tell you the truth,” Adeyanju wrote.

Tinubu, a two-time governor of Lagos State and former National Leader of the ruling APC, is one of the frontline candidates in respect of the 2023 general elections. Many political analysts laud him as a ‘master strategist’ when it comes to politics in Nigeria.

CrimePeace Ofoego Notorious For Breaking Into Mansions To Sleep Arrested In The US by LIVE08(op): 5:39pm On Jul 18, 2022
The police have arrested a Nigerian woman, Peace Ofoego for breaking into multiple private mansions to sleep in Hamptons, New York.

The 32-year-old woman has been labelled ‘Goldilocks of the Hamptons’ over her tricks in Westhampton, where she has been arrested three times for finding comfort at homeowners’ backyards, pool houses and rooms.

Daily Mail said Ofoego had broken into nothing less than seven mansions in posh territory to sleep for the past few months, and thus been arrested three times for trespassing since the end of May.

According to the police, Ofoego from Nigeria said she was fleeing from an abusive husband in Florida, and has claimed she was trying hard to find a place to regain custody of her children.

It was reported that a resident of Westhampton, Peter Nesvold, took her photos as she tried gaining entrance into his home while his wife was inside. Nesvold called police and Ofoego was arrested and was taken away shortly afterwards.

Another person, John Mallon, caught Ofoego inside his $35,000-a-month rented apartment. He also called police and asked them to record the incident, but refused to press charges against her.

Reports disclosed that Ofoego was first sighted in Westhampton Beach on Memorial Day weekend, when a resident reported to police that a “black female wearing a black trench coat and sandals” was wandering through the backyard construction site of his four-bedroom rental property – just about a mile from the village’s train station.

When police arrived on May 29, she told them he had no identification or credit cards because she had been robbed while living in Washington DC.

She also said she traveled to New York City a few days earlier, from where she boarded a rail road to Westhampton Beach, where she said she was looking for a hotel room near the ocean.

Police then helped her find a local homeless shelter where she said she wanted to charge her computer “and transfer funds to an account.”

But just a few days later, on June 2, she was seen wandering through the wealthy neighborhood again – and it would not be the last time.

Daily Mail reported that the authorities said that Ofoego passed through an unlocked gate that leads from the beach to a $275,000-a-month eight-bedroom rental on exclusive Dune Road.

She then allegedly entered the house through an unlocked back deck, where she relaxed until police showed up – and charged her with criminal trespass.

“Subject stated she was staying at a house down the road and entered the stated residence to ask somebody about a restaurant to eat at,” a police report obtained by the Post says.

Then just two days later, on June 4, Ofoego was again spotted ‘staying’ in the pool house of a property that rents at $35,000 a month.

When police showed up that time and were attempting to find another homeless shelter for Ofoego, “Peace began walking away,” an officer wrote in his report, adding that he cautioned her that if she kept wandering into village homes she would again be arrested for trespassing.

Ofoego’s last encounter with the Westhampton police came on June 24 at a ‘quintessential beachfront estate’ that features seven bedrooms and was listed for rent at a whopping $280,000 in July and August.

According to the police report, she boldly walked into the second-story bedroom, which was shocking to the homeowner, which led to the call on police who came to the scene and arrested her.

But when they were processing her paperwork at the police department, Ofoego was said to have told the police officers they were mistaken and she just “went inside to look at the rental.”

“You just want to arrest me,” she allegedly accused them. “All I did was look for a rental.”

Ofoego has been spending her days walking through the village and along the beach, residents have reported on Facebook.

Some have said they saw her on back roads, on Main Street, at a summerhouse where bands play during the summer months and at a local marina.

Sometimes she was seen wearing the same black trench coat and black knit beanie she was reported in back in May – despite hot temperatures.

Janet Feldman, for example, commented on the Westhampton Beach Area Community Forum, said she saw Ofoego walking on the beach and down Dune Road while walking her dog in the morning.

“She seems mentally unwell for sure,”Feldman wrote.

Marie Costelli also commented: “A few weeks ago, she approached me in Lidl asking for help. She needed money to pay for her groceries.

“As I was handing her some cash, which she took, a man who may have been the store manager asked her to leave. I felt sorry for her, I hope she gets the help she needs,” Costelli said.

Ofoego has said she looks forward to defending herself in court, refusing a court-ordered public defender at hearings on July 6 and July 13.

At one of those hearings, Liam Anthony DeFronzo wrote, Ofoego was arguing with the judge.

And days earlier, the Post reports, when officers were trying to serve her with a subpoena to appear in court, she told them they were harassing her and threatened to sue them.

“It seemed to me she is angry with where she is in life and with the system,” DeFronzo posited. “Ultimately, it seems she’s looking for a place to sleep, but of course you never know what she might do, and it’s not acceptable to break into homes.

“Does she truly want help in finding some sort of shelter and is doing this as a cry for help? I don’t know, but I felt compelled to help her the other day in the courtroom,”
he said.

She told the Post she was born in Nigeria, but has lived in the United States for the past 13 years – coming to the country when she was 19 years old and settling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she began studying medical science at Southern University.

She also said her father is a journalist in Nigeria, and she was educated in boarding schools before coming to the United States.

PoliticsPolitical Thugs Attack Nathaniel Agunbiade's House, Properties Destroyed by LIVE08(op): 5:05pm On Jul 18, 2022
Suspected political thugs attack Osun commissioner’s house, properties destroyed

The residence of Nathaniel Agunbiade, the Osun Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning was attacked early on Monday.

The information available to DAILY POST said hoodlums suspected to be political thugs launched the attack on the Erinmo Ijesa town and vandalised his properties and many cars.

It was also reported that several aides of the Commissioner were injured while attempting to resist the attackers.

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who preferred anonymity revealed that the attack on the commissioner might not be unconnected with the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s Osun gubernatorial election.

He also stated the hoodlums who were hitherto operating underground had suddenly surfaced and had taken to major towns in the state to destroy properties and attack members of the APC.

Earlier efforts to get the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola to react proved abortive as she didn’t respond to her call.

But in response to a text message, Opalola said the Police command was not aware of the incident.
