Eliora looked at Margaret in shock and repeated the statement she had just heard.

‘She had three babies?’ Eliora repeated in shock.

Margaret held on to Eliora’s hand and continued.

‘Yes Durotimi, three babies were delivered that night’ Margaret said, as she continued.

‘Your Mother was a very beautiful woman, Durotimi, she was quite tall at least 5’9, with ice blond hair and the bluest eyes I have ever seen.’ Margaret paused and gazed at Eliora, it was a gaze full of questioning wonder.

Yes, Eliora echoed Margaret’s thoughts. How could such a person give birth to someone so dark? Her skin was even darker than coffee beans and her eyes, even she Eliora, found her own eyes strange at times, they were black.

The eyes that had put the fear of God in so many people, she had come across.

Margaret made the sign of the cross and continued with her story as she stared at Eliora.

‘What we didn’t realise was that the eye of the storm brewing that night was focused on the room where your Mother resided and who a few minutes earlier had gone into labour.'

'From the other side of the convent what we thought we saw was a mini tornado.

England hardly ever has tornadoes, the eye of it, the tornado, I have no other word to describe it, was there in that room. Somehow the forces behind the tornado passed the eye through the window. The resulting damage was just a slight crack in the window, it was as if the thing didn’t want to hurt the person occupying the room.'

'By the time it landed and passed through the window into the room, all the other nuns in the room ran out. I stayed there with Mother Teresa to help your Mother with the birth.’ Margaret paused again.

‘The first baby came out, Mother Teresa cleaned the baby, it had blue eyes and pale white skin. She quickly cut the cord and cleaned the cut. The baby cried which was a good sign, we knew it was fine, we wrapped the baby and placed it in a crib. We were waiting for the placenta to come out when I saw what looked like hair. I called Mother Teresa over to your Mother. She agreed with me that it looked like another baby. She went out of the room and handed the first baby to one of the nuns praying by the door.'

'She came back in and we helped your Mother as she pushed out the second baby, it also had blue eyes and white skin. Mother Teresa cut the cord and made sure the baby cried.'

'By this time the force of nature raging in the corner of the room intensified. It didn’t blow anything around the room other than the crack in the window you would not know the eye of the storm was actually in the room. It just kept on twirling, you could hear strange voices coming from the vortex it created. Whatever this thing was, it was beautiful to look at, pure white light mixed with flecks of grey, as the voices in it intensified.’ Margaret paused.

‘I kept on saying my Hail Mary’s as this went on.
To be honest Duro, I was scared witless. But my faith kept me going, all I kept on saying to myself is that we are all God’s children. We waited for the placenta to come out.’

‘Please, can I have some water Durotimi?’ Margaret asked.

‘You know your name was given to you by your Mother’

Margaret took a sip of water and stared at Durotimi.

‘We waited for the placenta, your Mother was getting exhausted. Mother Teresa was getting worried. Your Mother kept on mumbling the same thing over and over again.’

‘They are the same but different. They are all one but different. The three of them are the same but different.’ Margaret paused again.
'It made no sense to me, it still doesn't'

‘Durotimi, I am tired.’ Margaret told her, but continued after a slight pause.

‘Mother Teresa was getting worried the placenta should have come out by that time but it hadn’t.'

'Your mother started saying she felt the urge to push, Mother Teresa told her to push. We were expecting the placenta to come out.
What we saw was a head of hair. Another baby was coming out, the minute the third baby’s head started crowning the storm and the vortex in the room disappeared, I heard a sad wail as it left.'

'I looked over to Mother Teresa she must have heard it too, as I saw her touch her beads and pray.’

Margaret paused and made the sign of the cross, before she continued.

‘When the third baby came out we were shocked, it was the blackest baby I had ever seen. I am not exaggerating the baby was as dark as charcoal. It seemed as if it had sucked and taken out all the blackness from the other two babies.’

‘Babies aren’t born black, I thought when I held you for the first time, but you were.
You were very fragile and small, you might have taken all the colour for the three of you, but the other two babies had taken all your vitality.
When Mother Teresa cut your cord, we couldn’t get you to cry. Your Mother asked for us to pass you over.'

She spoke to you in another language, which I can only think must have been Yoruba.’
‘As she kept on saying durotimi please, don’t go.’
‘It was heart-breaking watching her beg you to stay, she also said some other things that I couldn’t not understand. All I can tell you, is that when she was saying those things, I could feel the hair stand up at the back of my neck.’ Margaret held on to Durotimi’s hand as she shuddered at the memory.

‘Not long after you opened your eyes wide and stared at her, your Mother. It made my blood run cold. According to folklore babies never open their eyes the way you did on the day you were born. You cried after that, your Mother handed you back to Mother Teresa.’ Margaret paused again.

‘After that the placenta finally came out. Your Mother as can be expected was exhausted.’

‘Your Mother only asked about you, the day after the birth, she breastfed you. She insisted that your name whatever happened to you, had to be Durotimi.’

‘The first two babies that came out were boys, the two sets of parents, Mother Teresa had lined up each took a child and we never heard from them again.’

‘It was as if your Mum already knew the first two babies had left her. Unfortunately your Mother died three days after you were born.’ Margaret paused and stroked Eliora’s hand.

‘We tried to get several people to adopt you, but it never happened, all the parents said you scared them. Even some of the nuns at the convent were scared of you. The mystery surrounding your birth made you a child to be avoided at all costs. Especially when you started talking.’

The Doctor had not really bothered to come looking for her when she made a dash for it and had opened the door, he must have known that she couldn’t escape. He had returned to the bed and was laying surgical equipment on a side table next to the bed, he glanced up from what he was doing when he noticed her come back into the room.

The man who sounded like Charles followed her into the room.

‘Doctor I found her trying to escape, not that she would have gone very far anyway. I was on my way back here to tell you that you might as well to give her a rabies shot.’ He said, as he looked over to the Doctor.

‘Is that possible? I mean will it interfere with any other shots you need to give her?’ he asked the Doctor.

‘No that should be fine, well it all depends on the results of her swab test’ the Doctor replied, as he beckoned Linda to the table.

‘I might as well wait and watch see how you get on’ Charles said, as he walked over to a chair and sat down to watch the proceedings.

Linda walked over to the table that was covered in blue paper, her sobs breaking into the intermittent beeps coming from the machine on the table.

The Doctor put her legs into the stirrups at the end of the table and used two wristbands to hold her wrists in place. He also used a waist restraint and tightened it over her abdomen.

He opened her legs wide and pushed her legs up slightly, her lower body was opened and exposed to the Doctor. As it would be if she had been going through a routine gynaecological exam. He then placed the speculum in her vag!na and started widening the device, each extra inch creating pain and discomfort. It wasn’t too hard to bear, she had been examined before, but that normally was for womanly checks. But this examination was different.

There was nothing delicate about this exam, the Doctor kept on widening the speculum to such an extent that his fist was able to go into her freely while he collected the samples he needed for her tests.

Linda was in agony, ‘please, it hurts. Please stop’ she begged.

She turned her face to the Doctor, he ignored her pleas, she heard him humming a tune and he carried on as if nothing had happened.

Her sobbing filled the otherwise quiet sereneness of the room, as the Doctor collected a number of samples by scraping her insides with a spatula. The Doctor put the samples he had collected from her vag!na to work on the machines.

A few minutes after what Linda hoped was the last sample, she watched as the Doctor moved over to the left side of the bed. He had left the speculum in place, with her legs bent and open, it was painful and humiliating for her as she felt the air against her gaping bottom.

‘Hey boss,’ the Doctor looked towards Charles, 'do you want to do one side or shall I do all of the piercings?’ he asked.

Charles looked up from the tablet he was looking at, ‘you do it Doctor, it will make the pain last longer’ he replied, the lack of interest obvious in his voice.

When Linda heard this she sobbed loudly, ‘Please, please don’t do this. I am sorry if I have done anything to offend you. Please’

The Doctor picked up a needle from the table that he dragged towards her head on the bed and he put the tip of the needle against his hand. Satisfied with the result he stopped humming and looked down at her.

‘It’s a shame I don’t have any sharp needles this time around, I seem to have used them all. It seems piercing is all the rage at the moment, everyone wants one. It will have to be this old blunt needle I’m afraid’ he said excitedly, as he smiled at Linda.

‘Please don’t do this, please,’ Linda begged the Doctor.

He bent down close to Linda and grabbed her n!pp!e, he held up the needle for her to see, the needle he had chosen was slightly rusty and bent.
Linda thought to herself this could not be happening.

‘What has happened to me, see my life o.’ she cried, as she started sobbing again.

The Doctor twisted her n!pp!e till it was erect and pushed the needle against it, it took a lot of pressure but it finally pierced the skin, as a tiny trickle of blood confirmed.

Linda screamed a heart rending cry of pain, she couldn’t take this anymore she thought to herself as she wet the bed.

‘Please, please stop, I can’t take this anymore’ she cried.
‘Please have mercy on me’

Her cries had no effect on the Doctor, who kept on humming his tune as he got on with the task at hand.

The Doctor kept on twisting and pushing the needle through the delicate area of her n!pp!e, where thousands of sensitive nerve endings resided. Once the needle was through, he picked up one of the gold rings Charles had given him and threaded it through the hole he had pierced in the n!pp!e.

There was nothing delicate about the way he did it. Once the ring was through the n!pp!e he twisted the ring around so that the gap in the ring was opposite the n!pp!e and squeezed the two ends shut to form a circle.

He then picked up a blow torch, lit it and started using the heat to solder the two ends of the ring shut permanently. Once the ring was closed, the metal still blue from the blow torch and at its hottest, he then turned the ring so that the hot soldered part was inside her n!pp!e.

The faint smell of burning flesh permeated the room.

Linda screamed again, this time, her body bounced up and down on the table as her voice got hoarser, by the minute.

‘Please, please I beg you in the name of God, please stop.’ Linda screamed, as she continued to bounce up and down on the bed in agony.

The Doctor ignored her and moved to the right side of the bed and repeated the whole thing again on her right n!pp!e. By the time he twisted the hottest part into her right n!pp!e Linda fainted.

She came to, a few minutes later in agony and despair. It was now obvious to her that whatever path she was now one would be a terrifying one.

‘Tunde where are you please come and help me’ she thought as she sobbed in pain.

She looked around and noticed that the Doctor was looking at the results of her swabs.

‘Hello Linda, I see you are back with us’ the Doctor said.

‘Now for the best part Linda’ he said, as he pulled the table to the base of the bed where her feet were placed.

‘Please‘ she screamed, ‘please don’t do it.’

‘Please don’t damage me o. Please Charles I am sorry. Please Oh God, please help me’ she screamed.

‘Linda, we haven’t even started yet, I have seven rings to attach down here and I haven’t got all day, I have a plane to catch’ the Doctor said, as he looked at the needle he was going to use for the cl!t ring.

This time around it was another old and rusty needle, he started humming again as he moved in and twisted that tiny bit of flesh and started using the needle to pierce the flesh, on the first pierce Linda started bouncing up and down on the bed again, this time very violently, unfortunately the straps held her in securely.

‘I can’t take this anymore please, please.’ She cried.

The ring finally went through and the Doctor took the blow torch and soldered the two sides together, when he twisted the hot side through the newly created hole in her cl!t Linda fainted again.

By the time Linda came to, the other six rings had been placed on her outer lab!a three on each side.

As she returned to consciousness Linda felt incredible pain and agony all over.

How could people be so wicked, she thought to herself as she sobbed on the examining bed she had been placed on.

This man was evil, he had no right to be judge and jury, she screamed to herself.

The acrid smell of poo made her realise the she must have emptied he bowels during her ordeal. That meant she would have to do a lot of cleaning up once she got up from the table.

‘Lucien, I think I will pass on dumping a load in her, as you expected she is full of stuff’ the Doctor said, as he turned and looked at Linda in the eyes.

‘The results are positive for syphilis it seems as if she’s had that for a while. She also has gonorrhoea and chlamydia. I will give her some shots so she will get rid of them. Let’s hope the syphilis hasn’t done any damage to her and whoever she has passed it on to if it hasn’t been treated.’ He said, as he read out the results to Lucien.

‘I have done an HIV test and that has come out negative, but if you still have her, I would advise another test in three months’ the Doctor continued, as he started packing away the machine.

‘That’s fine Doctor, will she be able to perform this weekend? I am having a party and will be inviting some important people over that I want to entertain’

‘I will be bringing Dubai to Banana Island, we will be having a Dubai porta party, this weekend and Linda will be the main attraction’ he smiled as he looked over to Linda lying on the table.

‘Shame you have to fly out today Doctor, you could have stayed to watch’ Lucien continued.

Linda looked at Lucien in horror, no this couldn’t be happening, how did he know?

‘Yes, Linda, I know you have gone over there for those parties. Poor Tunde he even gave you the money for airfare, when you told him you were going there on business trips to see what you could buy and sell. Well don’t worry they will come to you here instead’ he said, as he walked towards his beloved roses.

‘You really messed that man up, Linda. I bet he will never be the same again.’

‘Do your friends really know what you went out to do in Dubai?’ Lucien asked her.

He walked over to her and pulled out the speculum unceremoniously as she screamed in pain, ‘now get up and clean up your mess’ he turned to her in contempt.

Linda watched as the man she met called Charles walk out of the room with the Doctor in tow.

Happy Boxing Day....

Chapter 35

Remi sat back in his seat and watched as the New York lights got dimmer as the plane continued on its ascent for the flight back to Lagos. He really had a lot of thinking to do as he stared at the clouds, without a doubt he wanted to be with Sam. But he realised the chances of her wanting to be with him now that Mercy was on the scene looked negligible and almost impossible.

It was obvious to the two of them that there was something between them, but whether it would happen was anyone’s guess. Sam had been insistent on him looking after Mercy and doing the right thing.

‘But what was the right thing?’ he thought to himself. Mercy had made it crystal clear that she was not interested in marrying him, she wouldn’t do it for the child either. There was no point of going into a marriage of convenience if one party so was vehemently against it. It would also have been a sham marriage, one of them would eventually file for divorce once the child was born. If he had to lay odds on it, that person would most probably be him.

The other thing that troubled him on a very strange male base level was the fact that Mercy could still be sleeping with other men while his baby was growing in her. He groaned at the thought and put his head in his hands, trying to get rid of that image from his head.

Sam had not come out to say that she wouldn’t talk to him anymore, but she just insisted they take each day as it comes. She was leaving the hospital that week and they decided they would see how things panned out when she got back to Nigeria.

The air hostess came over, ‘would you like a drink, Sir?’ She asked him, while gazing at him with interest.

‘Can I have a brandy please?’ he asked, while he pulled the tray from the back of the seat in front of him.

She handed him his drink of brandy and ice and moved on to the next passenger.

His first point of call when he landed was to go and see Mercy, he had tried calling her after her email, but she had sent him a text back that she was with her boyfriend so could not talk to him.

Was that a real Boyfriend or her Sugar Daddy, he thought to himself.

The whole thing was ridiculous he thought, how in God’s name had he managed to get into such a tangled web? He really wished he could take the baby out and incubate it out of Mercy’s womb.

But the question he could not answer was, why was he so attached to this baby? He had never been the broody type, men never were. But something about this child had stopped him in his tracks. It was like the baby already had him wound round its little finger.

He pulled himself out of his thoughts and concentrated on the drive to Mercy’s flat.

The email she had sent still sent shockwaves through him. Why wouldn’t a woman want to keep her own child? It just didn’t sound right.
The other thing that was also going through his mind that made his heart race every time he thought about it, would Mercy take very good care of herself to ensure that the baby was healthy?

That was the question going through Remi’s mind when he knocked on Mercy’s door.

Mercy opened the door after his third round of knocks on the door.

She finally opened the door, she was wearing jeans and a pink t-shirt, her make-up and hair in place. Any other time he would have commented that she looked flawless, he was not in the mood to dole out compliments today.

He had to admit that she looked really well for a pregnant lady and she hadn’t started showing yet.

‘Hello Remi come in.’ She said, as she opened the door further for him to come into her home.

‘Mercy what’s the meaning of the email you sent me’, Remi burst out, without even saying hello to her.

‘Remi, I meant everything I said in there, you want the baby you look after it. I don’t want it. I don’t know what came over me in the first place to tell you about it as I would normally have taken care of it.’ Mercy replied, as she walked into her living room.

Remi blanched at the thought, how many abortions had she done?

‘But how can you just give up your motherly duties, it is not natural.’ he said, as he paced in her living room.

‘Is it natural for men to abandon their children Remi?’ she asked him, staring at him scornfully.

‘Remi, there are loads of mothers out there who hate their children, but are forced to look after them. Is that natural? They beat the living daylights out of the kids or maltreat them. Is that right and natural? So please don’t tell me what is natural or unnatural’ she said to him as she sat down on a chair.

‘I will rent a place in a quiet location up north, as long as I have an internet connection, electricity and water I will be fine.’ She said.

‘What we do need to decide on though, is the hospital where I will give birth to the child. We also need to factor in how long it will take you to get there. As I mentioned you will be the one going home with the baby not me.’ She said, staring at him.

‘Would you like anything to drink Remi?’ she asked him as he continued pacing in her living room.

‘No thank you’ he said, as he stopped pacing.

‘I need to leave now, I will be back tomorrow Mercy.’ He said, as he walked out of her house.

He got into his car and decided it was about time to go and see his parents and face the music and their disapproval.

He sent a text message to his Mum that he was on his way to see them i.e. the two of them.

Remi pulled into his childhood home and sat in the car for a few minutes while he tried to gather his thoughts together and ready himself for the verbal assault he knew he was going to get from his parents.

He used his keys to open the door and heard them talking in the dining room.

‘Good evening Mum and Dad’ he said, as he walked into the room.

‘Kabo Remi,’ his Mum said, ‘how was your trip?’ she asked, as she paused eating.

His father looked up from the paper he was reading ‘Hello Remi, welcome home, how was your trip?’ as he went back to the paper he was reading.

‘It was fine thank you. I have something to discuss with the two you. ‘ He said, as he pulled out a chair near the table and sat on it facing his parents.

‘Mum, I am…ehm… I am having a baby.’ Remi said, as he stared at his hands on the table.

‘A baby?’ His Mother questioned.

‘Yes, Mum.’

‘Yes someone is pregnant with my child, I have done all the tests and the baby is mine. We had an accident and she got pregnant’ he told them.
‘What do you mean, you had an accident?’ she asked him, shock in her voice.

‘Who is this someone?’ she asked him.

‘A casual friend, we were never in a relationship.’ Remi said, as he looked up at his Mum.

‘Is it Sam?’ his mother asked, hope apparent in her voice.

Damn, he thought, if it had been Sam. She would be on her phone now organising a wedding he thought to himself.

‘No, Mother it is not Sam.’ He answered her question. He could see the disappointment in her eyes.

‘It is someone else Mum. Her name is Mercy. She is in a relationship with someone else.’ He said, as he sighed heavily.

‘So how does Sam fit into all of this because I am confused o. Kay, Baba Remi aren’t you going to join this conversation? I know you are pretending to be engrossed in your paper.’ She said, as she looked at him and nudged her husband in the ribs.

'I have made a mess of things Mum. I never believed things between myself and Mercy could ever become this complicated.’

‘I do like Sam my wish is to be with Sam if I had the chance. I want to take my chances with her and I saw her over the weekend Mum. I told her about the situation I currently find myself in. I don’t know how she took it as she hasn’t fully regained all of her memory.’ Remi said.

His Mother looked at him, consternation in her eyes.

‘Who is this girl that is pregnant for you Remi, do you like her?’ his Dad asked.

‘Not like Sam Dad, Mercy was meant to be a….’ he hesitated as he looked for the right word.

‘A friend with benefits? Is that what you were trying to say?’ his Father asked him.

Remi was shocked.

‘You kids need to know there is nothing new under the sun, nothing. All the things you are doing we have done before and our grandfathers before us. So remember that.’ His Father said, as his Father folded his newspaper and looked at him.

‘So what do you want to do?’ His Father asked him.
‘I want to listen to what you have to say, before I castigate you.’ His Father said.

Remi hesitated, he had been lucky to have great parents, even though he could tell they were not pleased with him right now, he knew they always had his back. Which made him wander what kind of parents Mercy had.

He decided to show his Father the email he had received from Mercy.

He could see the thunder appear on his Father’s face by the time he finished reading it. His Father stood up went to the fridge and poured himself a glass of cold water. He came back to the table and handed over Remi’s phone to his Mum, as expected she flew off the handle.

‘What! I can't believe what I am reading. What kind of woman is this? Remi where in God’s name did you find this woman?’ his Mother asked him.

Mercy was lucky she was not standing in front of his Mother at that moment he thought. She might have ended up receiving a slap from his Mother.

His Father calmed her down, but she started pacing the kitchen and rained all kinds of insults on Mercy’s head.

‘Bose, please calm down and let us talk this through with our son. The damage has been done, so let us find a way to resolve the situation we currently find ourselves in. Or rather Remi finds himself in’ His Father pleaded to his Mother.

‘Ok Remi, from what I can read this Mercy woman is serious. Is Sam aware of what is going on? Since it is obvious that this Mercy lady is not interested in you either.‘ His Father asked, looking at Remi.

‘Sam is aware of it Dad. Sam said I should concentrate on Mercy at the moment as she is the mother of my child. But Mercy is involved with someone else too, who she wants to hold on to.’ Remi sighed heavily.

‘Remi this is a complete mess you know’ his Mum told him.

‘How can she want to hold onto her man while carrying someone else’s child? I really don’t understand you kids of today o.’ His Mother added.

Tell me about it, he thought to himself. He had really managed to balls things up big time. But he was determined to go ahead with it, he wanted to keep the baby.

‘My first grandchild is going to be mired in a lot of controversy, but it seems that the child is determined to come as this Mercy girl could have terminated the pregnancy without you knowing. Why did she tell you anyway, was she trying to blackmail you?’ His Mother asked him.

She was about to go into another bout of questioning when his Father interrupted her.

‘Bose, now is not the time for if, why and what could have been. We need to start thinking about what Remi is going to do. More along the lines of how is he going to look after a new born on his own.’ His Father said as he stared at him.

His Father the eternal pragmatist, got down to business and steered them and the conversation down the path of reality, as the enormity of the task Remi was embarking on finally sunk in.

His Mother reluctantly accepted the situation, she wasn’t happy, but she told Remi that she was happy that he had taken a stand and would look after his child.

‘Don’t worry Remi.’ his Mum said. ‘We will do what we can to help, but at the end of the day, that baby is your responsibility.’

‘If the baby is staying with you Remi, then you better get yourself ready for the arrival of your child. This Mercy woman seems serious, if she wants to visit her child she will have every right to visit. I will start looking around for help. You will need a full time live-in Nanny to help you as a single father.’

‘Leave it with me, I will help you find a Nanny as soon as possible.’ His Mother said, as she pulled her two phones out of her handbag and scrolled through her contacts.

Some suggest the tradition is even older than that, dating back to the Christianised late Roman empire, when similar collections were supposedly made for the poor in honour of St Stephen, but the evidence is sketchy. All we can say for certain is that at some point St Stephen’s Day became associated with public acts of charity.

It was no accident that Good King Wenceslas, who was actually a Duke of Bohemia in the 10th century, risked life and limb on a freezing winter night to feed some wretched peasant who had chosen a most inclement evening to gather winter fuel. His fabled act of generosity took place on the Feast of Stephen, on which day it was a Christian’s duty to help those less fortunate than oneself. Or, as the somewhat laboured words of the hymn have it: “Therefore Christian men be sure, / Wealth or Rank possessing, / Ye who now will bless the poor / Shall yourselves find blessing.”

The problem in terms of dating when the Feast of Stephen became the day for alms-giving and box-opening is that the Good King Wenceslas hymn, which was written by John Mason Neale, dates from 1853. As with most things to do with Christmas, it was the Victorians who fleshed out the meaning of Boxing Day. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the term to the 1830s. Neale clearly recognised the association of the day in the public mind with charity, and in 1871 St Stephen’s Day was designated a bank holiday. What had previously been an amorphous tradition now, thanks to the structured minds and myth-making tendencies of the Victorians, became a seasonal necessity.

As part of this seasonal beneficence, some employers in the Victorian period gave Christmas boxes to their staff. In large households, after serving their employers on Christmas Day, domestic staff were allowed time off on Boxing Day to visit their own families, and went off clutching Christmas boxes full of leftover food. That at least is the suggestion, though there may be an element of Downton Abbeyish wishful thinking here. Scrooge’s attitude (pre-reformation) to Bob Cratchit’s paid holiday on Christmas Day – “A poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of December” – may have been more representative.

The tradition of giving Christmas boxes to tradespeople is now disappearing – a reflection of our atomised society.

What is undeniably true is that the practice developed of people giving Christmas boxes – commonly a small gift or some money – to tradespeople who had provided them with good service in the course of the year.
The Victorians may have given the name to Boxing Day, but this tradition predates the 19th century. It was certainly prevalent in 17th-century England, as the entry in Samuel Pepys’ diary for 19 December 1663 attests. “By coach to my shoemaker’s and paid all there,” he reports, “and gave something to the boys’ box against Christmas.”

The tradition of giving Christmas boxes to tradespeople was still extant a generation ago but is now disappearing – a reflection of our increasingly atomised and anonymised society, and of the move away from a social structure based on deference and patronage. For better or worse, Christmas really isn’t what it used to be.

Boxing Day is primarily a British tradition, and the UK has exported it to Australia, Canada and New Zealand (in each of which it has become primarily a shopping and sporting day). The term is little used in the US, and 26 December is not usually a federal holiday, though it is this year because Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. The 26th is a holiday in western Europe, but most countries designate it the “second day of Christmas” rather than Boxing Day.

Just to complicate matters, eastern orthodox Christian countries celebrate St Stephen’s Day on 27 December. They do not associate it with Christmas boxes nor, coming from the chillier parts of Europe, do they plunge headlong into frozen seas and lakes. They go to church, eat and drink copiously, and watch the telly instead. How very sensible.

It is generally accepted that the name derives from the giving of Christmas “boxes”, but the precise nature of those boxes and when they were first dispensed is disputed. One school of thought argues that the tradition began in churches in the Middle Ages. Parishioners collected money for the poor in alms boxes, and these were opened on the day after Christmas in honour of St Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose feast day falls on 26 December.
