Seun: My Fellow Nairalanders,
We have implemented a minimum post size of 40 characters in order to improve our content quality. We want people to patiently compose substantial replies before hitting the submit button. Based on your feedback, we may increase or decrease the limit in the future.
We have also extended the blocking period between members to 3 weeks, because many Nairalanders felt that the previous duration was too short.
Our automated system for dealing with spam and toxicity is now much smarter than it was in the beginning. It's now much less likely to take action against innocent posts. Alas, it is still far from perfect, so please be patient with us as we strive to make it more perfect.
- Seun. The minimum post size does not make any sense. People will now be typing rubbish just to meet it. You re not increasing content quality, you re decreasing it. |

Gerrard59: Firstly, thank you for your reply.
Regarding this: what is the church doing about the matter? Would the church be okay to see a large number of single Northern Christian women? Do they not think that these women desire to marry and could be swayed to Muslim men since the latter are larger in number and wealthier on average than their Christian men? Is the church not cajoling Northern Christian men to marry, notwithstanding the economic hardship? If they don't marry, how would they procreate to continue the tradition and lineage of Northern Nigeria's Christians? And why are the men afraid of marriage, considering that material things (an assumption by me) less entice Northerners in general (both religions)?
Also, at what rate do Northern Christian women copy or look towards the cultural lifestyle of their southern counterparts? Like, do they aspire to be like what they see in southern women? Do southern women have some sort of cultural influence on Northern Christian women? You can't cajole a broke man into marrying. Rate of marriage is low but I don't think it's a crisis. What are these "cultural lifestyle" of southern women you talk about? Fair enough. This sounds like a great opportunity. Could you please recommend avenues one can meet these Northern Nigerian Christian women? Like what kind of churches do they attend? Gatherings where they congregate? Events that they thronged? Churches: ECWA, Baptist. But this means there will be a large number of unmarried Northern Christian women, which poses a great problem for the entire population growth rate of Christians in Northern Nigeria. Already, the birth rates of Nigerian Christians are lower than those of their Muslim counterparts, and this is peculiar in the north. Since the church as a body is strict on monogamy, what is their stance on "cheating" by men? Do they tactically wave aside cheating by men? In clear terms, do Northern Christian men have side chics? The bolded is same in all parts of Nigeria. you have your answers. |

Gerrard59: Thanks for your response.
- Do you have any idea why they are single (assuming they are willing to marry)? - Are they open to marrying southern men (Christians or Muslims)? - Are they open to being second/third/fourth wives to northern Muslim men, and if no, why? - Apart from the perception of Christianity being anti-polygamy (the Bible doesn't explicitly prohibit polygamy and all God's prophets had more than one woman), why are Northern Christian men not open to polygamy?
P.S. When you mean Northern Christians in general, which parts of the country do you cover? Does it include Benue (I'm not too convinced those people are "northern enough". )? 1) High living costs. Many Northern Christian men aren't marrying, not by choice, but because they can't afford to adequately provide for a wife and family. 2) For Northern Christian women, openness to marrying Southern men largely depends on religious compatibility. They are generally open to marrying Southern Christian men, as the shared faith often overrides regional differences. 3) Marrying a northern Muslim man almost invariably means you'll have to switch religions. While there might be rare exceptions or situations where wealth plays an unconventional role, the primary barrier is the religious conversion requirement. 4) Why Northern Christian men are not open to polygamy - i think N0 1 answers this. But sha the primary reason for Northern Christian men's monogamous stance is deeply rooted in the doctrines and teachings of our churches. These churches advocate for and often mandate monogamy for their members. It's more about adherence to religious principles and church requirements rather than solely economic considerations or a 'God will provide' mentality, which is more commonly associated with Muslim marriage. When I refer to Northern Christians, I generally encompass the Christian populations found across the Northwest, Northeast, and significant parts of the North Central. This includes states like Plateau, Nassarawa, and parts of Kaduna and Taraba, which are often considered part of the 'Middle Belt'. |

pocohantas: It was not a generalization. It was a hyperbole and I believe that is why you read the whole post and could only pick that out. I find it ________ when people try to create petty arguments "Oh, not all. Use some". If I had said Northerners are good people, you won't be here telling me of your ancestry.
Once again, the post was clear and concise. Understood. I just felt the need to speak up because when exaggerations involve entire groups of people especially based on culture or region they can reinforce harmful stereotypes, even if unintentionally. I didn’t mean to start an argument, just offering another perspective. |

pocohantas: The point is quite concise and clear, Sir. Just pointing something out, ma'am. I'm from the north, and I think that was a very broad and inaccurate generalization. We should be careful not to reduce people to stereotypes, especially when the truth is more complex. Have a nice day. |

pocohantas: You guys have a flawed view of Northerners. I was once like that until I worked with one. They marry the younglings for sexual pleasure and procreation. Sometimes the girls grow and run away. Some stay. Some kill the man.
The divorce rate in the North is HIGH. No woman is left single amongst them, that is why you don't notice. They can marry up to 3x at 40 and it is not a big deal. This is wrong. There re a lot of single northern women... A whole lot. Except if you re talking about hausa women which I also know a few who are single. |

Some people grasp and retain knowledge more quickly and effectively. I believe most people know this, unless they refuse to admit the truth to avoid discouraging other students from studying. Yes, I get. |
