Me, my music

Music found me. I grew up in a household of three other siblings (I’m the youngest), my sister sang in the church choir with my mother. She used to write songs and I watched her write and sing songs when I was about four years. Also, my brother was a disc jockey and he used to practise at home. At the age of 14 (I am 26 now), I became a professional singer. I joined London Community Gospel Choir, my school choir, on an annual tour to Japan. I was 14, going to 15 and I spent my 15th birthday on stage in Japan. I got my first pay for doing music. Later, the band broke up, my mother died a year later and I found myself in another girl band. It was formed by two European girls, one Mauritian and one mixed-race girl and me. We had this idea of being like the new Spice Girls and then Matthew Knowles took a trip to London one time with Beyonce Knowles. He was asked to come and check out a new group who wanted to be like the next Spice Girls. He came to one of our rehearsals and that was the day he said, ‘I want to sign you girls and take you up.’



Experience with Beyonce

With the band, I did some great things. We toured with Beyonce and we had our reality show called, ‘Breaking From Above’ which aired in 166 countries around the world. We also had an album also called, ‘Breaking From Above.’ The group split amicably in 2012.



Journey to Nigeria

The day before my mother died, she told me in Yoruba that I would still end up in Nigeria and that resounds in my head. I met Sound Sultan early 2011 in England. He came into a studio I was working and he was impressed by my song. We just hit it off, recorded a song together and shot the video the next day because we were so excited by each other’s talent.



Success

I would attribute it to hard work, years of experience and believing in God. I am a female but men would always see me as a séx symbol.

My sister would always call me Seyi Shay. Moreover, when I was in the group, From Above, our manager did not like the way my name was spelt, so he used to spell it ‘Shay’ because it was easier for new people to understand it.



Entertainment in Nigeria

There is not much stability, security, or discipline out here. Everything just happens how it happens. In the UK and America, singles are measured by the song and chart position, which we do not have here. Here, singles are measured by the videos. Here you do not make money out of radio play but there is a lot of work you have to do as an artiste. I am facing challenges as an artiste and the biggest is that I am a female. Being a female might make me an easy sell on stage but there is a lot of séxism and bias in the industry.



Leisure

I cook, go to the gym and spa. I do not even have a beauty routine. I just eat whatever and I dance it off. If I have time, I will go to the gym to work it off. I eat anything I like because food is meant to be eaten, indulged in, and enjoyed.



Fashion

When I’m off stage, I dress comfortably. I always make sure I have my face tidy so I can look like a normal girl, which is actually what I am. When I am on stage or in front of the camera, I become my alter ego because then everything is all about sequins and glitter.

Five academic staff of the University of Calabar have been dismissed from the institution after being found guilty of plagiarism and financial fraud, while ten others have been demoted from their positions. This was noted by the Governing Council of the University in a press release yesterday.

According to the release which was signed by the secretary to the Council and Registrar of the institution, Dr. Julia Omang, four of the dismissed academic staff were involved in plagiarism while one was a case of financial fraud.

The press release, which was made available to The Nation, further states that 10 academic staff were demoted because they chose to publish their works in fake or cloned journals and proceeded to submit same and obtained promotion in the process.

Those that were dismissed for outright plagiarism are, Dr. Azubuike Iloeje and Dr. Maurice Bisong of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Mr. Oden Ubi of the Department of Marketing and Dr. Paulinus Noah of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies.

According to the release, Dr. Damian Agom was dismissed for salary overpayment, thereby enriching himself to the tone of N7, 268,044. 95 over a period of 11 months.

The demoted lecturers are – Prof. Udoayang, Dr. Asuquo Akabom, Dr. Sunday Effiong and Dr. C. O. Udoka, all of Accounting Department, Prof. Molinta Enendu Department of Theatre and Media Studies and Dr. E.S.Akpan of Banking and Finance

Also demoted are – Dr. A.I. Afangideh and Dr. Francis Okpiliya of the Department of Geography and Environment Science and Dr. K.B.C Ashipu of the Department of English and Literary Studies.

Professors Udoayang and Enendu were demoted to the rank of senior lecturer, while Dr. Okpiliya, Dr. Afangideh and Dr. Ashipu have now moved down to position of lecturer 1.

Besides their demotion, they are to refund all monies earned from their unmerited promotion and barred from promotion for the next six years, the release stated.

It is disheartening that the sort of offences usually committed by corrupt politicians and public office holders has filtered into the academic institutions to such an extent that is punishable with dismissal and demotions.

Using fake journals to obtain a promotion is not just the sort of thing we hear of from academicians. Fraud and plagiarism are also serious offences which are not supposed to be taken lightly, especially in an environment where the characters of our future leaders are being molded.

Following recent spate of deaths in the Nigerian movie industry, a cleric who claimed to have seen a vision, Evangelist Emeka Omenka had warned media practitioners as well as members of the entertainment industry generally to intensify their prayers to avert further untimely deaths of very important Nollywood personalities.

According to the Abia State-born cleric, danger still looms in the industry except the practitioners heed this urgent clarion call for fervent prayers to avert further deaths in the fast emerging entertainment industry in the country, noting that there is an evil wind blowing through the industry.

He maintained that he saw a vision in 2001 that there would be a series of deaths in the Nigerian movie industry if Nigerians especially, if members fail to pray, stating that recent events in that sector had evidently shown that the practitioners didn’t heed the call to pray.

Omenka insisted that he is neither a prophet nor an apostle, adding “God has a solution to the spate of deaths in the movie industry.

I have seen what is happening in the movie industry since 2001 and I feel enough is enough of deaths of movie practitioners in the country.”

He maintained that there is a road that must closed to avert further deaths in the industry, stating that he had studied the industry in other countries of the world and found out that the spate of deaths in Nigeria is unusual and something must be done quickly to stem the tide.

“I saw a female member of the industry lying in state, but I am confident that if we pray fervently we can put an end to the deaths,” said the general overseer of the Wonder Working God Ministry in Akowonjo, Lagos.

Scammers have cloned the Facebook account of Nigeria’s celebrity pastor and three-time presidential candidate, Rev. Chris Okotie, and are using it to extort money from the public, his spokesman warned in a statement on Thursday.

Account cloning is when scammers copy a user’s Facebook profile picture onto a new account along with the user’s name and use the new account for various scams.

Ladi Ayodeji, Director of Media and Communications Strategy at Household of God Church, Okotie’s church, disclosed that at least two of such accounts have been created.

“In one of the accounts, they are sending mails to Rev Okotie’s supposed friends soliciting for donations for a purported kidney patient that Rev. Chris Okotie allegedly intends to send to a Saudi Arabian hospital for treatment,” Ayodeji said.

The requests are false and do not emanate from Okotie, the spokesman said. “The reverend does normally not engage in public fund raising,” he said.

He added: “In 26-year history of his church, there has never been a time when he (Okotie) solicited for funds from the public for any project. These criminals have ignored our instructions to shut down these fake Facebook accounts.”

The matter has already been reported to Facebook for action, Ayodeji said.

A disgraced Indiana megachurch leader who seduced his teenage parishioner evidently told her Jesus wanted them to have sex.

As part of the government’s sentencing memorandum, federal prosecutors this week released incriminating letters between Jack Schaap, the former pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Ind., and his teen victim.

“In our ‘fantasy talk,’ you have affectionately spoken of being ‘my wife,’” Schaap wrote in one letter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “That is exactly what Christ desires for us. He wants to marry us + become eternal lovers!”

Schaap, 55, was fired by his church in July, according to the Associated Press. He eventually pleaded guilty to the federal charge of taking a minor across state lines with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

The scandal has shocked the Hammond church's 15,000 members, who elected Schaap their pastor in 2001. The father of two was described as a "magnetic" and "charismatic" preacher, according to CBS. He was also married to the daughter of the church's former pastor.

The inappropriate relationship between Schaap and the 17-year-old, however, was discovered when a church deacon saw on Schaap's cellphone a picture of Schaap and the teenager kissing. According to court documents the relationship began when the victim was one week shy of her 17th birthday.

"I'm surprised that this happened," former church member Cherise Williams told Fox Chicago affiliate WFLD 32 back in July. "The pastor made an error - obviously made a mistake ... He was a charismatic leader, and he helped a lot of people in their struggles. Obviously there's still a fondness there for him. The one thing we want to be sure we bring is reconciliation to him and his wife."

While the Times of Northwest Indiana reports that multiple letters of support have been sent to Schaap's sentencing judge, U.S. District Court Judge Rudy Lozano, the victim told the court that the relationship has left her reeling.

“He told me to confide in him, to trust him, and he made me feel safe and comfortable around him as a man of God,” she wrote in a letter to the court, according to the Sun-Times. “(Schaap) preyed on that trust and my vulnerability.”

Prosecutors said Schaap "groomed" the girl before becoming intimate with her, counseling her and texting with her frequently -- 662 times in one month, according to phone records.

Sentencing in the case was schedule for Thursday.

Saudi Arabia on Wednesday March 13, beheaded seven men after being charged with looting, theft and armed robbery.

The men were arrested in 2006 jewelry-stealing ring. One man, Nasser al-Qahtani, told the Associated Press attested to inhumane treatment following his arrest. He claimed that he was tortured for a confession, not appointed a lawyer, and only appeared before a judge three times during the lengthy trial. He also claimed that his torture marks were ignored in court.

According to reports, he was 15 years old at the time of his arrest. Qahtani and the other six men were originally sentenced to death by firing squad and crucifixion in 2009.

Human rights activist group Human Rights Watch appealed to the country’s King Abdullah on March 4 to not execute the men, stating that there was “strong evidence” of an unfair trial.

The kingdom however, follows strict Islamic laws which state that people convicted of murder, defiled or armed robbery can be executed. Saudi Arabia has already executed 23 people this year.

These seven men were killed by three men with swords in the southern city Abha; the region is notoriously targeted with discrimination.

Saudi media reports that the government is considering doing away with public beheadings and seeking firing squads as an alternative. Lethal injections have also been reported as an option.

Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, demands a ceasing of child executions altogether.

“It is high time for the Saudis to stop executing child offenders and start observing their obligations under international human rights law,” he said.

The popular comedian and businessman, who wwas apparently driving on the bridge at the time of the incident, tweeted: “Something bad just happened on 3rd Mainland Bridge now. A car fell off the bridge… God save us all.”

He however added that: “Thank God no life was lost.”

DailyPost had receieved information that a bus carrying unspecified number of passengers, has reportedly plunged into the Lagos state Lagoon.

Among the unspecified number of commuters was a baby. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred at the intersection of Oworonsoki and Yaba enroute Obalende.

National Emergency Management Agency’s (NEMA) spokesperson, South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident and stated that rescue operation were ongoing.

Electricity supply at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, will be interrupted between 10 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. today, Sunday.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said in a statement that “the proposed interruption on March 10 is to allow the agency to improve on power supply at the airport.’’ According to the statement signed by the agency’s spokesman, Mr Yakubu Dati, the temporary disconnection is to enable engineers to switch over to a new and improved source of power supply to the airport.

“It is expected that the new source of power supply will drastically reduce the incidents of power outage and thereby enhance service delivery at the airport. “The power improvement project, which is taking place simultaneously in major airports across the country, is designed by the Federal Government to improve power supply to all airports,’’ it added. YAW BEEKO, a 29-year-old footballer from Asante-Akyem area in the Ashanti Regionm Ghana, has been bathed with acid by an aggressive husband, Kwame Amoah, who accused Beeko of allegedly flirting with his wife.

Amoah, a miner, committed the act at 12:30pm on November 11, 2012 at Manso Kwabenaso in the Amansie West District, shortly after the complainant's arrival in the community to join his teammates.

Amoah was remanded in prison custody when he appeared before a circuit court in Bekwai presided over by Daniel Kwaku Obeng on Monday.

Kwasi Amoah, also 29, was caged to re-appear on March 20, 2013 after pleading not guilty to the charge of assault and causing harm.

The miner lost his cool that afternoon and subsequently launched the deadly attack on the footballer, who had joined his teammates in his manager's residence where the accused was a tenant.

Beeko, who lost an eye due to the incident, is still on admission at the St. Martin's Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum where he was rushed to for treatment.

The prosecutor, Detective Sergeant Stephen Ofori, informed the court that Yaw Beeko became a victim of the unfortunate incident while he was washing his apparel shortly after his arrival in the community.

According to him, the complainant, on November 11, 2012, lodged into the residence of his team manager to await a football match between his team and another at Manso-Kwabenaso.

Upon arrival, prosecution stated, Beeko decided to wash his clothes as they were dirty due to the dusty road leading to the community.

Sergeant Ofori narrated that the accused person, who was a tenant in the house, emerged and confronted the complainant, accusing him of flirting with his (Amoah's) wife.

Amoah, who was armed with concentrated acid in a Tampico container, immediately poured the fluid on the complainant's face and body without verifying if the rumour was true or not.

Prosecution added that the aggressive man, apparently not satisfied with his action, chased Amoah, who was running from danger.

Sergeant Ofori said it took the intervention of people around to save the victim.

The case was later reported to the police, while the victim was taken to the St. Martin's Hospital at Agroyesum.

The suspect was later arrested and charged with the offence after police investigations
