Health / How To Avoid Household Generator Fire by luckyjojo: 8:56pm On Jul 28, 2017
Many homes can hardly do without the use of a portable power generator. This is to supplement the power from the national electricity supply. In developing countries like Nigeria where electricity supply is poor, almost all homes will boast of having a generator set. Popular among the low income earners is the small portable generator called ''I better pass my neighbor''.This particular generator was banned lately in Nigeria because of the high number of fatalities caused by it's carbon monoxide generation. In United State about 3,500 persons die each year to power generator fire and about 16,000 injured according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).
Portable generators are very useful but causes fire, electric shock and produces carbon monoxide which is a silent killer. Below are the steps to avoid these hazards.
1.Do not use the generator indoors.
This is to avoid the accumulation of dangerous and poisonous gasses such carbon monoxide. The generator should not be used inside homes, garage, basement, or other enclosed or partially enclosed places.
Do no place the generator close to your windows, doors or vents.
2. Turn off the Generator before refueling.
This is one of the causes of generator fire. The heat or spark from any part can ignite the fuel. Also while refueling avoid pouring fuel on hot parts . You can use funnel to transfer the fuel to avoid spill.
3. Do not store fuel or highly combustible materials close the generator.
This is because the heat from the generator can ignite them and in case of fire they will be easily available source of more fuel to increase the fire.
4. While refueling do no approach the generator with phone or naked light as this can cause fire.
A portable non spark rechargeable light can be used.
5. Ensure the wiring is okay
Make use of a qualified technician to carry out the wiring and transfer switch installations.
6.Avoid electrocution
Do not operate the generator on a wet hand and do not keep it on a wet surface. Also ensure that the wire is fully insulated and use the 3 pin plug for earthing purpose.
7. Install fire alarm in your homes.
A better alarm is the one that can detect fire that has flames, and a smoky fire that has fumes without flames. It is called a "Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm.
8. Ensure you have a fire extinguisher.
Fire extinguisher with a class B rating should be used.
8. Have an escape route
Many have died because they were trapped by fire in the homes. It is very good to have some escape route in each of your rooms and periodically practice withmembers of your household on how to escape in case of fire.

Education / Solutions To Examination Malpractice by luckyjojo: 11:11pm On Dec 17, 2016
The impact of examination malpractice on the educational institutions cannot be overemphasized. Haven dealt with this in my previous post, now I will be looking at the solution to this monster - examination malpractice.
(1) The use of anti-examination. malpractice helmet. Waoo! I know this may sound funny but if fully implemented, could stop the act of spying on others work.

2 Appropriate spacing between candidates.
The practice of coping from each other or whispering of answers to others will be hampered if there is adequate space between the candidates.
Image result for picture of students widely spaced in examination hall
(3) Allocating seating position.
It is a common practice for friends and partners in the crime of examination malpractice to sit close as this will enable free exchange of materials and solutions. The invigilator should allocate sitting positions at will as this will cause some disconnect from the cheaters' network.

Education / Tricks Students Use To Stay Off School by luckyjojo: 4:28pm On Dec 12, 2016
It is true that every child want to achieve great things in life. Many want to be educated and acquire high degrees. This they often shout out when asked what do you want to be in future? You will hear things like ,'' I want to be a doctor'','' I want to be a lawyer;'', so it continues!, Then the question is .''How can they achieve this without paying the sacrifice of acquiring education?'' Yes, many students often look for reasons to absent from school. This is common during the Nursery and primary education. They don't want to leave the comfort of their home, and also try to avoid the hard academic work and stress in school. You often find parents having a hard time convincing their children to attend school. This result in nagging and crying most times as the sight of school irritates some children. Below are some of the excuses they put up to avoid school.
1. I am not feeling fine
Early in the morning, instead of waking up to prepare for school such student will remain in bed, pretending to be sick. This trick have a high success rate because parents do not play with the health of their children. Yes, they allow such child to stay at home and given attention to ensure quick recovery. Funny enough this sickness immediately disappear when the school's resumption time has passed.

2. Our teacher won't be around.
In the nursery and primary schools, each class is manned by one teacher and when the teacher is not around the students will play throughout the day with little or nothing to show for coming to school that day. Since the parents can easily fall for this trick once in a way, some lazy student use it to stay off school.

Education / How To Handle Your Child's Poor Academic Performance by luckyjojo: 10:10am On Dec 05, 2016
At the end of every academic session, parents are presented with the Results of their children, some with excellent performance and awards, while others with poor results and failure.
This is when some parents flaunt the achievements of their brilliant children. Pictures of these children will be everywhere
showing how many awards the kid received and how mum and dad are so proud of him/her. You will see the pictures on Facebook, Blackberry DP etc. Some parents will even share testimonies in Church. However many parents won't have any picture to show. Reason? Their children didn't win any award. The child didn't receive any accolades or recognition. Interestingly, there are more parents in this category.

If you are a parent in the first category, congratulations! Remember to celebrate with
moderation. Also remember to thank God for his mercies. Finally, ensure you partner with
your child to improve the performance. Sustained performance is very important.
However if your child didn’t win any award,I have a couple of ideas to share.

1. Note that this is the result for a session.
and not for a life time. This is not a life time assessment. So, don't take it more seriously
than you should.
2. A Students’ report card is a report of several activities. Most report cards are done in two major categories namely, academics and Skills/ character. Don't focus only on the academics. The sections on character and others are equally important. Also remember to read the teachers comments and other comments. Celebrate the child's achievements in these other areas.
3.Talk with the child. Ask what he or she thinks about the result. Also seek joint problem solving opportunities to improve the result. Remember to compose yourself very well before the discussion. Give attention to the child's opinion.

Health / Protection In Electrical Equipment by luckyjojo: 10:24pm On Aug 29, 2016
The hazard in the use of electrical equipment is enormous. Among which are electric shock, fire and burns, and equipment damage. To prevent or reduce these hazards the following protective Systems should be In place :
(1) Fuse
Fuse protects an appliance when there is a fault and continuous current overloads. The fuse is a thin strip of conductor which melts when a current more than the rated current passes through it, thereby breaking the circuit and protecting the device from the dangers of excess current.

(2) Circuit Breaker
Just like the fuse, the circuit breaker protects a system from excess current but by throwing a switch off when an excess current passes through it.
Both fuse and circuit breaker's main objective is to protect the appliance from overheating and damage and becoming a fire hazard.
(3) Insulation
Insulation is the covering of life electrical conductors with insulating materials to prevent electric shock, fire, explosion or instrument damage.
(4) Isolation
Isolating an electrical system makes the system electrically dead and unlike the fuse and circuit breaker prevent it from re-energizing accidentally. It creates an air gap between the equipment and the electrical supply.
An isolation must be done before any repairs or maintenance is carried out. So remember to unplug your appliance from electrical power source before servicing.
(5) Double Insulation
This is the use of two independent layers of insulators on a live electrical conductor. This second layer is to avoid any chance of electrical shock. Double insulation is used in portable power tools where earthing is not available. In double insulation, the whole of the inside of the appliance is contained in plastic beneath an outer casing. So when there is an electrical fault within the appliance, no live conductor can touch the outer casing because of the insulating plastic layer. Examples of appliances with double insulation are hair dryers, radios, and electric drills.
(6) Residual current devices (RCD)
This is also called earth leakage circuit breaker. It makes sure that the electrical equipment operate at mains voltage. This device monitors and compares the current flowing in the live and neutral conductor of the equipment. It cuts the power supply to the equipment quickly when difference of only a few milliamperes exist between the live and neutral lines. Although an RCD will not prevent electric shock but it limit the duration of the shock to about 40 milliseconds, which is it's response time.

Education / Gate Crashing In Job Tests by luckyjojo: 8:37am On Aug 24, 2016
Gatecrashing is the act of attending a
recruitment test/interview without being
invited and with the hope of being allowed
to participate. This is a common term
among job seekers, especially young
graduates.! The zeal and expectation of
getting the job is high, but what can you
do when you are not invited for the test?
This is why gatecratching takes place. Most
times, the candidate are qualified for the
test based on the requirements but they
wonder why they are not invited for the
test. Many have recorded success in this
adventure and even got the job but some
others are often disappointed, not even
given a chance to participate in the exercise.
To increase the success rate in
gatecratching, the following should be
considered.
(1) Study the history of the recruiting
company to know if gatecratching is
allowed.
Before you take this risk, ensure that the
company do consider gate crashers. There are
some firms that are very strict in their
recruitment exercise and don't allow such, so
it will be a total wastage trying that with
them.
(2) Prepare for the test
Haven determined to gatecratch, get the test
information from those invited and prepare
adequately. It will be very disappointing to
fail the test after the hurdles of gaining
access. You can make use of past questions
if any and the popular GMATS.
(3) Go with your certificates and required
documents.
The certificates both original and photocopies
are very important. It is needed to show
that you are qualified for the test. There
are cases where people are disallowed from
participating in the test because they did
not come with their original certificate. A
means of identification such as driver's
license is also needed.
(4) Present a good conduct at the test
venue. Remember you need the help of the
test officials, so do not go there to do ''
aluta'' ''aluta", this is not the campus where
you think everything is to be achieved
through protest. Humbly and politely
approach the organizers, showing them the
evidence of your application if any and your
prove of being qualified for the test and
plead to be given access to participate.
Good approach matters a lot.
(5) Ensure you submit your documents with
them.
Do not just write the test without
submitting the relevant document to the
examiners. This will contribute to your
chance of being invited for the next stage.
(6) Pray for God's favour
You are taking a risk and more than any
other person you need more of God's
favour. So, pray for success in your journey.
The journey of life needs determination
and risk taking, but ensure it is a calculated
risk.

Health / How To Treat Victims Of Electric Shock And Burns by luckyjojo: 1:43am On Aug 18, 2016
Electricity is hazardous. Many people have
suffered from electric shock and burns from
using electricity. To respond to a victim of
electric shock some procedure must be taken
to ensure the safety of the victim and to
save the responder from electrocution. This
procedure should be followed in responding
to a victim of a low-voltage electric shock:
(1) First on seeing a victim of electrical
shock, raise the alarm by calling for the
help of others. Also call the nearest first
aider.
(2) Switch Off power if you can. This stops
further shock and Burns.
(3) Call for an ambulance or medical
support.
(4) If you could not switch off the electric
power. Take the victim away from the
conductor using a non-conducting material,
such as wooden object. this is to save you
from electrocution.
(5) Do not approach the area on bare feet
or on wet foot wear. That is, ensure you
stand on insulating material. This is to avoid
electrocution.
(6) Place the person in a recovery position
if the person is breathing. This is to ensure
that the airway is open.
(7) If the person is not breathing, apply
mouth to mouth resuscitation. If there is no
pulse, Start chest compression and when
breathing resumes, place the person in
recovery position.
(coolIf there are Burns treat it by placing a
sterile dressing over it and secure with a
bandage. Note, do not apply any ointment
or lotion on the burn and do not touch
any loose skin or blister.
(9) When the person regains consciousness,
treat for normal shock.

Religion / The Taste Of Kerosene In That Soup Was For A Purpose: by luckyjojo: 2:28pm On Aug 17, 2016
When I was in school as a bachelor, I had
a particular canteen where I do buy 'eba
igbo' when it is time for me to eat
'swallow'. The best soup I take is Egusi &
Ogbono together. I love this soup so much
that, I see no reason to ask for any other
soup no matter how the owner of the
canteen tried to convince me to eat any
other soup. For more than one year,
anytime I enter that canteen, they can't sell
any other soup for me. One day, I went
there& I was served as usual. As I started
eating, I notice this my best soup tested
kerosene. I tried to swallow like 3 morsel
of the eba, but the kerosene's taste was
really spoiling the enjoyment of the food. I
called the owner of the canteen & explained
to her. Herself& her husband,apologised&
persuaded me to try afang soup. They told
me it is richer than the ' Egusi & Ogbono.
I have heard so much about afang soup but
I have never tasted it. I also did not
believe it can be sweeter& better than my
choicest soup; Egusi &Ogbono. After much
persuasion, I reluctantly agreed to be given
the afang soup. Men& brethren, I must
confess to you that, when I finished eating
that afang soup that day, I asked for extra
plate of the food. It was truly sweeter&
richer than the Egusi and Ogbono I have
being seeing as my best soup then. Right
from that day, it has been afang soup all
the way. Even when I got married, I told
my Queen I like afang soup and is one of
the best soups I love to eat at home.
Thank God my Egusi & Ogbono tasted
kereosene, may be I would not have tasted
or known the sweetness of afang soup.
Friends, may be presently; your ' Egusi &
Ogbono' has started tasting 'kerosene'. Your
own 'Egusi & Ogbono' may be your current
job that was once full of sweetness &
benefits, but now is full of threat from.your
boss to fire you. For singles, It may be a
relationship that was once flourishing but
now is now full of frustration. It may be
your bussiness, your ministry, your health,
etc.that is now tasting ' kerosene. Please
call on the 'Owner of the Canteen ' (God
the Almighty). He is willing to introduce &
serve you 'afang soup' that will be sweeter
& richer than that your 'Egusi & Ogbono'.
Your best is coming. The taste of that
'Kerosene' you are having in your 'soup' is
for a purpose. It is because, there is an
'afang soup' God wants you to taste.
Sweetness is coming into every area of your
life that is tasting bitter in Jesus name!

Education / He Pros And Cons Of Pre-degree Program In Higher Institutions. by luckyjojo: 12:31pm On Jul 18, 2016
Pre-degree program is a one year academic
calendar program organized by tertiary
institutions for the purpose of selecting
successful students into year one degree
program. The requirements are lower to that
of those seeking direct degree admission and
it is another door for admission for those
who couldn't get direct admission either due
to SSCE or Jamb palaver.
Some schools conduct light screening
before admitting students into the program
while others do not but only rely on the
SSCE result.
After critical evaluation, below are the pros
and cons of pre-degree program.
(1) It creates admission opportunity for those
who couldn't meet up with the requirements
of degree admission. The hurdles of getting
the required credits in senior school certificate
examination, and and getting the cut off of
Jamb and post-Ume has denied most
students admission, thereby truncating their
life's dream. But some have taken solace in
Pre-degree admission.
(2) It prepares the students for the degree
education.
Yes! during this period the student adapts
fully to the school environment, understands
the secret to success in the institution, and
build good relationship with lecturers and
co-students. Also most of the courses taught
during this program are repeated during the
year one session, which gives them an
advantage over the newly admitted year one
students.
Despite these benefits, there are also some
demerits of Pre-degree education.
(1) It increases time spent in school.
The one year spent on the program add to
the schooling time, thereby prolonging the
school period by one year.
(2) Increased cost of tertiary education
A student that gets direct admission spends
less in tertiary education as compared to
those who started through Pre-degree. The
financial burden of the Pre-degree program
add to the total cost of tertiary education.
(3) It does not guarantee admission. It is
sad to see some students come back home
without admission after spending time and
money for a whole year in school. To
worsen this some schools only admit a small
percentage of the students. What a waste of
time and resources! This has caused many
untold depression.
It will be good for any student who wants
to embark in Pre-degree program to put
these points into consideration.

It is very bad that some people can be destroying national assets claiming to be fighting for the Niger delta. Were the people of niger delta consulted before this nonsense. It is even clear that many ethnic groups from this region have dissociated themselves from this criminal act. These people are only fighting for selfish gain or being politically sponsored. How long will this madness continue.
