Business › NNPC Tops Share Capital In Nigeria by lusid(op): 6:21pm On Oct 08, 2021
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has named the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has the company with the highest share capital in the country.

The Registrar General of CAC, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, revealed this Friday in Abuja while presenting the Certificate of Incorporation of the Company to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.

In a press statement issued on Friday by the Head Media Unit, CAC, Rasheed Mahe said that the presentation ceremony which was organized by the management of the NNPC limited headed by the Company’s Chief Executive Officer Malam Mele Kyari.

Alhaji Garba Abubakar who told Buhari that the company was registered electronically within 24hrs, added that it had an initial share capital of 200 billion naira.

Responding, Buhari noted with delight the feat attained by the NNPC limited and therefore charged the management of the company to ensure that it was adequately capitalized.

He pledged his continued support to the company which he said was strategic to the economic development of the country and therefore prayed for its success.

President Buhari had on 16th August, 2021 signed into law, the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021.

Section 53(1) of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, requires the minister of petroleum resources to cause for the incorporation of the NNPC limited within six months of the enactment of the PIA in consultation with the minister of finance on the nominal shares of the company.

Education › Why Benjamin List, Macmillan Won Nobel Prize In Chemistry 2021 by lusid(op): 2:45pm On Oct 06, 2021
Benjamin List and David W.C. MacMillan have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences “for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis”. While List is of Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, MacMillan operates at Princeton University, USA
The reason, according to Academy was that the duo’s breakthrough was “an ingenious tool for building molecules. Building molecules is a difficult art. This has had a great impact on pharmaceutical research, and has made chemistry greener.”

Many research areas and industries are, according to the Academy, dependent on chemists’ “ability to construct molecules that can form elastic and durable materials, store energy in batteries or inhibit the progression of diseases. This work requires catalysts, which are substances that control and accelerate chemical reactions, without becoming part of the final product. For example, catalysts in cars transform toxic substances in exhaust fumes into harmless molecules. Our bodies also contain thousands of catalysts in the form of enzymes, which chisel out the molecules necessary for life.”

The Royal Swedish Academy went further: “Catalysts are thus fundamental tools for chemists, but researchers long believed that there were, in principle, just two types of catalysts available: metals and enzymes. Benjamin List and David MacMillan are awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021 because in 2000 they, independent of each other, developed a third type of catalysis. It is called asymmetric organocatalysis and builds upon small organic molecules.

“This concept for catalysis is as simple as it is ingenious, and the fact is that many people have wondered why we didn’t think of it earlier,” says Johan Åqvist, who is chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.

Organic catalysts have a stable framework of carbon atoms, to which more active chemical groups can attach. These often contain common elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur or phosphorus. This means that these catalysts are both environmentally friendly and cheap to produce.

The rapid expansion in the use of organic catalysts is primarily due to their ability to drive asymmetric catalysis. When molecules are being built, situations often occur where two different molecules can form, which – just like our hands – are each other’s mirror image. Chemists will often only want one of these, particularly when producing pharmaceuticals.

Organocatalysis has developed at an astounding speed since 2000. Benjamin List and David MacMillan remain leaders in the field and have shown that organic catalysts can be used to drive multitudes of chemical reactions. Using these reactions, researchers can now more efficiently construct anything from new pharmaceuticals to molecules that can capture light in solar cells. In this way, organocatalysts are bringing the greatest benefit to humankind.”

Politics › Kaduna Traders Defy Government’s Order, Return To Kawo Market by lusid(op): 1:38pm On Oct 06, 2021
Traders in Kawo Market, Kaduna State, have defied the state government’s order by returning three weeks after the state suspended weekly markets in selected local government areas, including Kawo in Kaduna North Local Government Area.

Daily Trust reports that the Tuesday weekly market in Kawo was active on Tuesday when our correspondent visited as traders said they had no choice but to defy the government since no alternative was provided for them.

Even though there was a low turnout, Abdulaziz Muhammad, who sells grains said he was not bothered as more people and customers would turn up later in the day.

“This is the only weekly market around the metropolis where we can sell our goods in large quantity because not much profit is realised during the rest of the week.

“If I don’t come out to sell what I have to feed my family, the government will not feed me; they will not give me money to cater for my family. The government needs to provide another means for us. This is the only business I know and depend on and I have no other place to go to other than Kawo market,” he said.

On his part, Ibrahim Abdullahi, a tomato seller from Maraban Jos, said he defied friends and relatives’ warnings by coming to the market because he had no choice.

Although he clearly wanted to leave but he never made any fuss about it and still gives his 100% for PSG. By far PSG's best player in the squad.

Top attitude, top mindset and top work ethic. He'll go really far.
You guys have problem at the back yet you are fixated on one player whose sole duty is to attack. I watch the game against Espanyol and i saw a madrid side who couldn't defend their lines very well

Politics › Supreme Court Reserves Judgment In Suit Challenging Executive Order 10 by lusid(op): 8:53am On Oct 05, 2021
The Supreme Court on Monday reserved judgment in the suit filed by the 36 states challenging the legality of the Presidential Executive Order 10, 2020.

President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Executive Order 10 on May 22 last year.

The order made it mandatory for all states to include allocations of both the legislature and the judiciary in their Appropriation Laws.

A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Musa Datijo reserved the judgment after listening to arguments canvassed by all the parties.

The states had through their attorneys-general in a suit marked SC/655/2020 posed two questions for the Supreme Court to determine.

These are – Whether having regards to the provisions of Section 6 and 81(3) of the Constitution read together with item 121(3) of the third schedule, the defendant is not constitutionally obligated and or charged with the responsibility for funding all capital and recurrent expenditure of the High Courts, Sharia Courts of Appeal and Customary Courts of Appeal at the states of the Federation being courts created under Section 6 of the constitution.

-Whether considering provisions of Section 6, 80, 81, 120, and 121 whether the Presidential Executive order number 10 of 2020 made by the president on May 22, 2020, to compel the plaintiffs to fund State High Courts, States Sharia Courts of Appeal and Customary Courts of Appeal in violation of the Constitutional provisions vesting responsibility for funding the said courts on the federal government is not unconstitutional and unlawful.

At Monday proceedings, counsel to the plaintiffs, Augustine Alegeh (SAN), argued that salaries, emoluments, remuneration, and allowances of judges were not supposed to be in any appropriation bill.

He submitted that under Section 84(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), funds for such expenditure were charged and captured in the consolidated revenue fund, not in the budget.

Politics › Borno Woman, Dije Sale Sentenced To 34 Years Jail Term Over ₦66 Million Fraud by lusid(op): 9:37pm On Oct 04, 2021
The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, secured the conviction and sentencing of Dije Sale to 34 years imprisonment.

Sale was sentenced before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the State High Court, Maiduguri for forgery, use of false document and obtaining under false pretence to the tune of N66 million.

The convict forged a “Purchase Order” and used same to defraud the nominal complainant of N66m under the guise of executing a purported contract awarded to her by FHI 360, a Non-Governmental Organisation.

The convict was arraigned on July 1, 2020 on a three-count charge but pleaded not “guilty to all the charges preferred against her.

During trial, prosecution counsel, Mukhtar Ali Ahmed called four witnesses and tendered several documents before the court that were admitted in evidence.

EFCC busts 21 internet fraudsters in Abi
Justice Fadawu, in his judgment said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, “and the court is convinced that the defendant is guilty of all the three counts as charged.”

He convicted the defendant of all the counts and sentenced her to fourteen years on count one, ten years on count two and 10 years on count three.

He ordered that the sentencing be served concurrently.

Furthermore, the convict was ordered by the court to pay N54million to the nominal complainant in restitution and “if she defaults, the convict shall serve 10 years imprisonment which will run consecutively.”
