Business › CBN Postpones Enaira Launch by lusid(op): 9:46pm On Sep 30, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Thursday, announced the postponement of its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), known as eNaira, to allow other key activities lined up to commemorate the country’s 61st independence anniversary.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, CBN Spokesman, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi explained that the CBN took the decision to postpone the launch, which had been initially planned to coincide with the independence anniversary, in deference to the mood of national rededication to the collective dream of One Nigeria.

While assuring that there was no cause for alarm, he said the CBN and other partners were working round the clock to ensure a seamless process that will be for the overall benefit of the customer, particularly those in the rural areas and the unbanked population.

Highlighting the benefits of the eNaira, Nwanisobi stressed that Nigerians would be able to carry out peer-to-peer transfer to another person’s eNaira wallet as well as pay for goods and services at selected merchants. He added that the eNaira would also help reduce the use of cash and ensure stability of the Nigerian economy.

On the readiness of banks and other financial institutions in the financial ecosystem for the launch of the eNaira, he reiterated that eNaira was a journey, explaining that not all bank customers were expected to commence transactions on the day of the launch.

He, however, assured that financial institutions in Nigeria remained key actors and were a critical part of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).

Nwanisobi also noted that the CBN was mindful of concerns expressed about the eNaira, being among the first CBDCs in the world. According to him, the Bank had put a structure in place to promptly address any issue that might arise from the pilot implementation of the eNaira.

Politics › INEC Asks Population Commission To Avail It With Death, Birth Statistics by lusid(op): 11:43am On Sep 25, 2021
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Population Commission (NPC) to make available the statistics of deaths and birth data to enable it to update and clean its voters register.

This is as the NPC Chairman, Nasiru Isa, has said that there may be a national census next year subject to approval by the Presidency.

The INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, made the request when the NPC boss, Isa, visited INEC’s headquarters as part of efforts to engender a smooth working relationship between the two commissions.

While making the request for the statistics of death and birth, the INEC boss said, “The idea is to enable INEC to easily delimit and periodically review Electoral Constituencies based on NPC’s figures whenever there is a new population census.

“This cannot be achieved without accurate population data.

This is partly why no constituencies have been delimited in Nigeria since the last exercise was carried out 25 years ago in 1996 by the defunct National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON). Working together with the population commission, we are determined to make a difference this time around, just as we solved the problem of voter access to Polling Units in Nigeria.”

The INEC chairman told the visiting NPC delegation that the election management body had already prepared and produced a Discussion Paper on Electoral Constituencies in Nigeria looking at the issues more broadly, including the imperative of a new population census.

“We will share copies of the Paper with the NPC at this meeting,” Yakubu said.

He said that within the framework of the RA/EAD project, “we have jointly covered 261 LGAs nationwide. I am aware that NPC have covered more LGAs.

“Going forward, we are finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will be signed very soon. In the MoU, we have more clearly defined the scope and duration of our collaboration as well as the responsibilities of the two commissions. I want to reassure the NPC that we shall continue to strengthen our existing collaboration. After all, we are both public bodies funded by the treasury to work for Nigeria and Nigerians,” the INEC chairman explained.

In ensuring a collaborative partnership between the two agencies, the INEC chairman said that it had the largest biometric register of citizens in Nigeria complete with photographs and fingerprint information for voter authentication.

He also said that INEC had also introduced facial biometric authentication of voters which was successfully piloted in the recent bye-election in Isoko South 1 State Constituency in Delta State.

The INEC chairman also said that the commission would also explore other areas of cooperation to enable NPC and INEC to serve Nigerians better, but said, “Of immediate interest to INEC is how the NPC can provide data that will assist us in further enhancing the credibility of the National Register of Voters.”

In his remarks, the NPC chairman said that they were in INEC to further enhance their collaboration in their service to Nigeria, explaining that they have already delineated constituencies in the 774 local government areas of the federation as well enhancing their electronic capturing of data to improve their census duties.

Politics › Past Govts Reason We Have To Borrow So Much -lai Mohammed by lusid(op): 3:47pm On Sep 23, 2021
The Federal Government has slammed criticism over its incessant solicitation for foreign loans.

This stance was made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who noted that such criticisms are insincere due to the state of the economy.

According to the minister, the government had to borrow so much because there was nothing on ground to show for funds previous administrations borrowed.

Lai made this call on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Maiduguri to redress the incessant vandalism of power and telecommunications infrastructure.

The event was also attended by the Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.

According to Minister, it was imperative for the FG to borrow due to the appalling state of infrastructure across the country while listing completed and ongoing projects, as a result.

“Today, we have new airport terminals in Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt, the Itakpe-Warri rail line that was abandoned for decades is running.

“We have well over 13,000km of federal roads under repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction and there is a road project in every state, “Today, we have started the countdown to when the 2nd Niger Bridge, which successive administrations have built only on paper, will be completed.

“The list of projects we are handling with the loans we obtained is long,’’ he said.

Lai also launched an attack on the previous administration over the current predicament of the country which he said necessitated the borrowings.

“For example, in their time, they claimed to have spent billions of Naira in building infrastructure, but as one can see, their infrastructure projects were only on paper.

“Today, we are still saddled with looking for resources to build the same infrastructure for which they claimed to have allocated huge resources.

“We will not be deterred by the antics of those who believe they can play politics with everything,” the Minister said.

Politics › Ekiti 2022: Segun Oni Obtains PDP Governorship Form by lusid(op): 2:10pm On Sep 23, 2021
The race for the governorship election in Ekiti state has started as a former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Segun Oni, yesterday obtained the nomination and expression of interest forms of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2022 Ekiti State’s governorship election.

Oni’s nomination forms were obtained on his behalf by a former member of the House of Representatives and Director General of his Campaign Organisation, Mr. Yemi Arokodare.

Speaking with newsmen at the PDP national secretariat shortly after obtaining the forms, Arokodare said that the people of Ekiti had been waiting for Oni to declare his interest in the governorship race.

He said that the people of Ekiti have resolved to use their votes to deliver the state for Segun Oni and the PDP.

Arokodare said: “To the glory of the Almighty God and on behalf of our principal, Mr. Olusegun Adebayo Oni, we have come to pick the PDP nomination form to express his firm and profound interest to contest and win the party’s primaries and emerge victorious at the governorship election in 2022.

“Today, anyone can visit Ekiti State to do a survey and general assessment: the civil servants are waiting, pensioners are waiting, farmers are waiting, traders are waiting, the women are waiting, the youths are waiting, people living with disabilities are waiting, even the men are waiting.

“Everyone is waiting for the emergence of Segun Oni, as the candidate of the PDP, to elect and crown as the next governor of the state. It is going to be a movement like no other.

“The people of Ekiti State once tasted the administration of Segun Oni (2007 – 2010), and for them, it is still the best experience in terms of a people-driven government, good governance and open government.

“Segun Oni is the real and practical definition of an unblemished Omoluabi that is tested and trusted. He is a rare breed of a politician who critics and everyone testify to his honesty, decency, integrity and charismatic leadership.

“It must be said at this point that it is only the quality of the candidate the PDP presents in Ekiti that will count and not the propaganda that the PDP can field just anyone and win.

“The popularity and acceptance of Segun Oni in Ekiti State is very special and unique in its own way, and it is strategic to the PDP winning the governorship seat in 2022.”

Politics › Zamfara Governor Reveals How Kidnapped Students Were Rescued by lusid(op): 11:30am On Sep 18, 2021
The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has said that a repentant bandit led to the rescue of the abducted students of Kaya Maradun from the bandits.

Governor Matawalle made the disclosure Saturday morning in a BBC Hausa exclusive programme, “Ganimun hanya.”

On September 1, 2021, armed bandits stormed Government day Secondary School Kaya in Governor Matawalle’s Maradun local government area, and abducted 73 students.

Blueprint reports that last week, the state government announced their rescue and were received by Governor Matawalle at the Government House in Gusau.

He said that shutting down communication in the state has helped in securing the abducted students from the bandits.

“After abducting the children at Kaya in Maradun, we have followed all means to ensure their release but all have failed.

“I have been thinking on how to deal with bandits. Allah gave the wisdom, I later thought of shutting down communication because it is a major problem.

“I said if we can discommunicate the bandits leaving in those villages from getting information from people in the town it will help.

“It was from there one of those repentant bandits who embraced peace, that resides in the city told us that he will do his best to get where they were, which he did.

“We took a decision to deploy security, they moved in around 2:00am and by 6:00am, they reached out to the place, did what they did and the students were rescued,” he said.

He said there are no remaining students that are abductees in the state.

Business › CBN Retains Lending Rate, Other Parameters For Seventh Consecutive Time by lusid(op): 10:22pm On Sep 17, 2021
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has agreed to retain the Monetary Policy Ratio (MPR) at 11.5 per cent.

CBN governor Godwin Emefiele made this announcement on Friday after the two-day MPC meeting in Abuja.

Mr Emefiele said the committee also resolved to hold all other policy parameters constant.

The decisions reached by the MPC include retention of MPR at 11.50 per cent, retention of asymmetric corridor at +100/-700 bps around the MPR, retention of cash reserve ratio at 27.50 percent and retention of Liquidity Ratio at 30 percent.

He said the bank’s continuous intervention in the agricultural sector would help to increase food production in the country and moderate the food inflation further.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MPC is retaining the MPR at 11.5 percent and holding all other parameters constant for the seventh consecutive time. Meanwhile, an Economist, Tope Fasua, said retaining the MPR at 11.5 per cent and having all other parameters constant indicated the apex bank was being cautious.

Mr Fasua said that a change in the rates at this time could pose negative macro and microeconomic implications.

“Regarding the MPR, the CBN is still watching. If they drop the MPR now and the market takes a cue, inflation will rise.

If the banks begin to lend money at lower rates, inflation will rise.

“They cannot afford to increase the rates now because that will hurt people who are borrowing from banks for business,” he said.

Politics › Senate Passes Bills Establishing 2 Federal Universities In Ekiti, Nasarawa by lusid(op): 11:00pm On Sep 15, 2021
The Senate, Tuesday, passed two bills seeking to establish two federal universities in Ekiti and Nasarawa states.

The bills are Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences Iyin, Ekiti State (Establishment) Bill, 2021, and Federal University Lafia Teaching Hospital (Establishment) Bill, 2021.

Both bills are separately sponsored by Senators Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), and Tanko Al-Makura (APC,
Nasarawa South).

The passage of both bills followed the presentation and consideration of two separate reports by the Committee on
Health (Secondary and Tertiary).

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe (APC, Kwara Central), in his presentation, said the bill to establish the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital was “necessitated as a result of the precarious health conditions faced by resident.”

According to him, the bill to establish the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences Iyin, Ekiti State, seeks to promote and emphasize teaching, research and extension of knowledge in the field of medicine and environmental sciences.

In a related development, the Senate on Wednesday passed a third bill to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards) Act.

The bill’s passage by the upper chamber followed consideration of a report by the Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary).

Senator Oloriegbe in his presentation explained that the amendment bill seeks to amend the First Schedule to the
Principal Act to include the University Teaching Hospital, Lafia and Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital.

In a related development, a bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Education, Kaiama, Kwara State, scaled second reading during plenary.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (APC, Kwara North).

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, after the bill was considered, referred it to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

The Committee which is chaired Senator Ahmad Baba Kaita ( APC Katsina North) , was given four weeks to report back to the upper chamber.

Politics › Nigeria’s NBS Is Issuing Data Through Back Channels Since New Regime by lusid(op): 11:34am On Sep 15, 2021
It appears that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has started issuing data reports to foreign media outlets through back-channel before officially releasing it on their websites as they did in the era of Dr Yemi Kale. This is based on observations made by the Nairametrics team on different occasions.

You would recall that President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mr. Simon Harry as the new Statistician-General of the Federation and the head of the National Bureau of Statistics in August, following the completion of Yemi Kale’s second tenure.

However, a major breach has been noticed on two occasions where news outlets now get information of statistical reports before the official publication on the Statistical agency’s website, which was not the case initially.

Prior to the ban on the use of Twitter in Nigeria by the federal government, the former head of NBS would inform the public through his handle if and when any report would be released. However, with the ban on Twitter use, the public, news outlets, and analysts alike now had to go through constant monitoring of the official website.

This was not an easy task; however, it was a fair playing ground for all parties involved. With the recent backchanneling of information, it has become a situation of an unfair advantage given to some people at the expense of others.

Case 1 (Q2 2021 Foreign Trade)

On Monday, 6 September 2021 a number of news outlets had reported the 2021 second quarter foreign trade report,
referring to the weekend as the release date. It was only until later in the afternoon on that Monday, before it was
officially released on their website.

Case 2 (August 2021 Inflation report)

On Tuesday, 15 September inflation figure for the month of August 2021 was reported at 17.01%, representing a decline compared to 17.38% recorded in the previous month. This report referred to the release date being Wednesday, 15 September 2021 in the morning.

It is worth noting that as of the time of writing this article the consumer price index report is yet to be released on the official website of the NBS. Below is a screenshot of the website as of 9:03 am.

Why this matters

Releasing of official data through backchannel is an action that is worthy of investigation as it gives a few privileged information at the expense of the many, creating an era of unfair advantage and is against the freedom of equity in the pursuit of facts. A famous statistical code is “Facts from reliable Figure”, this action undermines the reliability of the statistical processes in the country.

Politics › FG, Ogun Commence Palliative Works On Sango-Ota-Idiroko, Lagos-Abeokuta Roads by lusid(op): 5:51pm On Sep 14, 2021
The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure have finalised plans to embark on palliative work on critical sections on Sango-Ota-Idiroko Road, starting from Sango Under bridge to Ojuore.

Engr. Umar Bakare, Federal Controller of Works, Ogun State, made this known while addressing newsmen shortly after inspection of critical sections on Sango-Ota-Idiroko Road and Lagos-Abeokuta road, on Monday.

Bakare told newsmen that the 64km Sango-Ota-Idiroko has been put under consideration for reconstruction by the Federal Government under the FG’s Credit Scheme similar to the just awarded Sagamu-Papalanto-Obele road.

He said that there is a synergy between the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to carry out the palliative work on the identified bad portions of the two important roads.

According to him, as soon as work commences the failed portion between Sango and Iyana Ota, amounting to 1.2km will be prioritised, while the second phase will be the expanse of 4.7km between Iyana Ota and Iganmode Grammar School.

This would be going on simultaneously with the efforts of Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, as the agency has also been mobilised to work on other parts of the long stretch.

Also, the engineers assured that drainages would form an integral part of the reconstruction work to ensure that flood water does not destroy the road again.

While acknowledging the plight of commuters on the roads, the Federal Controler of Works noted that the Federal Government was aware of the unpalatable situation and the government is working assiduously to ensure that the roads are fixed.

While also pleading for the understanding of residents of Sango-Ota and its environs, he disclosed that Julius Berger, the contractor handling Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway is currently working on the Toll Gate Sango Bridge axis and the Tipper Garage section, adding the contractor will soon move to Itori/Lafarge/Papalanto section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Road.

Bakare further disclosed that the pavements of the critical sections under Sango Flyover bridge and Itori/Lafarge/Papalanto will be reconstructed as Rigid Pavement is to be put in place due to the peculiarity of the two sections of the road.

He, however, appealed to the Ogun State Government to regulate the activities of traders along the road as they contribute to the traffic situation of the area.

The Federal Controler of Works also requested that articulated vehicles be allowed to go on the Sango Flyover bridge to further decongest the road, declaring the flyover has the ability to withstand the weight of large trucks and trailers.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya assured that palliative works will commence soonest along Sango-Idiroko Road, particularly from Sango Under bridge to Iyana Ota and Ojuore.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Lateef Yussuf, Akinsanya said that the state government has not folded its arms on the matter, adding efforts have been on to collaborate with the federal government with the view of finding lasting solution to the roads.

While reiterating the Governor Abiodun-led administration’s commitment to make life more comfortable for the people and residents in the state, he assured that ministries and agencies responsible for traffic control and control of traders selling along the Lagos-Abeokuta road will be informed to do the needful.

Politics › 2023: Makinde’s Presidential Advert Fake, Says Aide by lusid(op): 8:29pm On Sep 13, 2021
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Mr Taiwo Adisa, has said the advertisement in circulation linking his boss to 2023 presidential ambition is fake.

Adisa who disclaimed the advertisement in a statement in Ibadan on Monday, described it as one of the antics of fake news promoters.

He added that the advert which had the picture of Governor Makinde and the Nigerian flag, as well as the picture of his CPS, should be disregarded.

“It is the usual practice of naysayers and detractors to seek to mix sour grapes in the basket of fruits, at a time when well-meaning citizens are celebrating the victory of the state football club that has just been promoted to Nigerian Premier Football League.

“Let it be stated clearly, however, that Governor Makinde has no hand in any such campaign for the presidency, as he has always stated that tomorrow only belongs to God.

“It is unthinkable that the governor, who has cautioned supporters against mounting a second-term campaign for him, would launch a 2023 presidential campaign at this period.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Makinde will not change his belief that power belongs to Almighty God and that only God knows the direction He is taking every of his creation.

“Therefore, we urge members of the public to ignore the fake news,” he said.

Fulfilled my ass. He lived a failed and fake prophecy life and he was a charlatan. You think we have forgotten his failed COVID prophecy because he died? Philanthropy is the only thing I can't fault him for.

Just watch any of his churches deliverance videos and see for yourself. I will give you 3 main ones that I gave one other guy on this thread.

1. The one where one guy was possessed with the spirit of a snake.
2. The one where one woman was pregnant for years and was healed to go deliver and the baby was moving in her stomach. Just watch it and ask yourself if that's how a baby moves in the stomach.
3. The one with one cripple guy who had been begging at the church site for some time and was healed. Check if that guy's legs looks like those of a real cripple (withered and atrophied) or someone just pretending to be one.

As a matter of fact critically look at all their "miracles" and ask yourself if you are convinced with the acting.
Between Christ miracles which you did not see and TBJ's which would you believe

Politics › Jigawa To Expand Grazing Reserves, Build Nomadic Schools For Herdsmen by lusid(op): 8:03pm On Sep 11, 2021
Governor Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa says his government was planning on expanding the existing cattle grazing reserves and routes in the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Dutse by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Relations, Habibu Kila, the governor made the comment when he received the state’s Chairman of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Umar Kabir, in Dutse on Friday.

“As a result of our recent working tour to the Netherlands, plans are underway to expand the existing cattle routes and grazing reserves which will provide enough all-year grass for nomads,” the governor said.

Mr Matawalle also called on the group to support his government fight against vices among the Fulani, especially the youths, who engaged in criminal activities, promising to provide Fulani children with nomadic education.

In the press statement, the governor said, “In addition to about 400 nomadic schools across the state, this administration will establish 200 more of such schools.

“It will also employ 10 Fulfulde-speaking teachers from each of the 27 local government areas of the state to ensure effective teaching and learning,” he said.

Jigawa’s Farmers and Herdsmen Board announced in April that it would demarcate 95km of land as grazing reserves as part of measures to tackle farmers/herders clashes in the state.

Its spokesman, Zubairu Sulaiman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the reserves would be carved out in Babura, Birninkudu, Gagarawa, Gumel, Gwaram, Buji, Maigatari, Suletankarkar, Kafinhausa and Kirikasamma local government areas.

Mr Sulaiman said the state government had released more than N7 million for the exercise.

On January 1, 2008, former governor Sule Lamido established 400 grazing reserves, 50 of which have been gazetted.
