The residents of Bayelsa State are currently living in fear as a new deadly epidemic known as “monkeypox” broke out in the state.

About 11 persons including a medical doctor, who have been infected with the virus, are said to have been quarantined at the in an isolation center at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri in the Yenagoa.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the epidemiological team are reportedly tracking 49 other persons who were said to have come in contact with the victims.

Confirming the epidemic, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, said that samples of the virus had been sent to the World Health Organisation laboratory in Dakar, Senegal for confirmation.

Etebu described monkeypox as a viral illness caused by a group of viruses that include chicken pox and small pox.

He said the virus was first noticed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and later started breaking out in the West African region.
The commissioner added that the virus had the Central African and the West African types -“the West African type is milder and has no records of mortality”, he said.

“Recently in Bayelsa State, we noticed a suspected outbreak of monkeypox. It has not been confirmed. We have sent samples to the World Health Organisation reference laboratory in Dakar, Senegal.

“When that comes out we will be sure that it is confirmed. But from all indications, it points towards it.

“As the name implies, the virus was first seen in monkey, but can also be found in all bush animals such as rats, squirrels and antelopes.
“The source is usually all animals. It was first seen in monkeys and that is why it is called monkeypox. But every bush animals such as rats, squirrels, antelopes are involved. So, the secretions from particularly dead animals are highly contagious.”
He listed the symptoms of monkeypox as severe headache, fever, back pains amongst other symptoms, noting that most worrisome of all the signs were rashes bigger than those caused by chicken pox.

Ebetu said the rashes usually spread to the whole body of an infected person.

On the Bayelsa outbreak, he said, “We noticed the first index case from Agbura where somebody was purported to have killed and eaten a monkey and after that the people who are his neighbours and family members started developing the rashes.
“We have seen cases from as far as Biseni. We invited the NCDC together with our own epidemiological team from the Bayelsa Ministry of Health. We have been able to trace most of the people who have come in contact with the patients.

“So far, we have 10 patients and we have created an isolation centre at the NDUTH and most of them are on admission and we are following up the 49 cases that we are suspecting may come down with the illness. As a state we are taking care of all the expenses of all the isolated cases.

“The disease has an incubation period and it is also self-limiting in the sense that within two to four weeks, you get healed and it confers you with immunity for life.

“We have mobilised virtually every arsenal at our disposal in terms of sensitising the general public and making them aware by radio programmes, jingles and fliers. Also, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has mobilised fully to Bayelsa State. We are on top of the situation.

“The only thing I will tell the general public is to observe hand hygiene and ensure they don’t come in contact with dead animals and their secretions. The disease is airborne too. So, it is very infectious.
“People should wash their hands whenever they go in or come out of their houses. If they touch with animals, they should ensure that they wash their hands. They should be very vigilant. People should report any similar cases to the relevant authorities.
“A lot of people have come down with the symptoms but they are hiding in their houses. If they hide, there is the propensity for the infection to spread.”

Etebu urged residents to be calm as personal protective instruments have been distributed to workers

The Federal Ministry of Information has allegedly been given a one week quit notice to vacate its Abia State office, by the landlord of the property, Azuka Okoroafor.

According to reports, the notice served was backed by an order of the magistrate through the lawyer, which authorized them to seek an order to eject the ministry.

It was reportedly stated that the current Minister o Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had not paid rent for two years since he took over the running of the ministry.

An official of the ministry said: “Since Alhaji Lai Mohammed was appointed as the Minister of Information and Culture, he has not taken the welfare of the Ministry of Information seriously.
“He is using the money of the Ministry of Information to run the Ministry of Culture, but Culture is under Information.

“We have never seen such a situation where a minister will hide in the Ministry of Culture and abandon the Ministry of Information and that is why we are having this issue of non-payment of our rent. Our rent has not been paid for over two years and we are suffering it now.

“We don’t even know what comes next. Our landlord has threatened to eject us any moment from now, and he started a court action against us.
“Our staff members have been advised to take their personal belongings from the office because we may come to work one morning and find out that the office has been locked up.”

Saidi Balogun and Fathia Balogun are popular figures in the Nollywood industry. They have featured in thousands of movies especially in the Yoruba movie world.

The duo with their good looks and talents, used to be one of Nollywood’s favorite couples until they divorced in 2006.

It was rumored that the celebrities dissolved their marriage following allegations of infidelity from both partners.

Ever since then, Saidi and Fathia have not really been seen acting together in movies. Though after their break up, there was a relationship rumor between Saidi and another actress Funke Adesiyan but that also didn’t seem to last long.

Some years ago, it was rumored that there was a rift between Saidi and Fathia over use of name.
Saidi Balogun later cleared the air, he said that they went to the court to dissolve the marriage completely and that he didn’t ask Fathia to drop his name which she still uses. He also revealed that they only have two children from the marriage and the speculated 3rd child is from Fathia’s old marriage.

Former Arsenal and Galatasary player, Emmanuel Eboue has been diagnosed with HIV.

The player’s agent, Tekin Birinci, posted an update on Facebook: “Unfortunately is true that we are facing some medical problems about Eboue. He will go to England… so we will know how serious it is”.
Emmanuel Eboue will fly to England to have further tests after it was discovered the 34-year-old had contracted HIV, according to Goal Turkey.
Report claimed the virus was discovered as the former Galatasaray and Arsenal star was having a medical for Cypriot side Limassol.

The HIV virus was detected in Ebuoe’s blood.
The Ivorian made 215 appearances for Arsenal during his six-year spell in north London. Scoring 10 goals and assisting a further 20.

In 2001 the right-back moved to Turkish giants Galatasaray, winning two Super Lig titles as well as a Turkish league cup in his four years at the club.

The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC) says it is not within the jurisdiction of the military to declare the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist group.

On Friday, the defence headquarters branded IPOB a militant terrorist organisation.

The south-east governors also announced a ban on all activities of IPOB in the geo-political zone.

In a statement by Micheal Ajayi and Sanusi Suleiman, the group’s executive secretary, and middle belt coordinator, NHRC said the military should have made its findings and submitted to the national assembly for consideration.

“The ban on IPOB is likely to force the group underground… it has foreclosed the prospect of negotiation which is an essential element of democracy and free speech,” the statement read.

“We are not in a military regime. It is wrong for the military that should be under civilian authority to determine which organisation is a terrorist or not.

“In a democracy, the military should have made its findings and submitted same to the national assembly for deliberations.

“There is no basis to ban IPOB. The Nigerian constitution recognises the freedom of association.

“Though IPOB declares it is fighting for separation from a section of the country from Nigeria, the solution is constructive engagement and not outright banning of the group.

“Under the terrorism act 10 2011 passed by the Nigerian national assembly, only a high court judge on the advice of the national security adviser, the inspector general of police or the attorney-general of the federation can declare an organisation a terrorist group ad such has to be published in a Gazzzet making the proclamation of the governors and the Military to be illegal.”

The group urged the federal government to release IPOB members in detention or charge them to court.

“We have sent a petition to the United Nations, (UN) office in Geneva. We have already been invited in pursuant to the procedures and expectations of the UN Rapporteur on Human Rights. Nigeria and her component states should show respect to the dictates of universal standards,” it said.

The NHRC, established in 2008, is made up of several civil society and community organisations across Nigeria.
