Preview: Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Liverpool - prediction, team news, lineups

Liverpool have the chance to move out on their own at the top of the Premier League table when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

The champions currently sit level at the summit with Tottenham Hotspur, but an inferior goal difference leaves them in second place heading into their trip to a Brighton side coming off the back of a much-needed victory.

Liverpool's injury problems will continue to be a talking point throughout the remainder of the season given the long-term nature of some of their absentees, but they did an admirable job of answering questions regarding how they might cope last weekend.

A dominant 3-0 win over previous table-toppers Leicester City left them level with Spurs, and another victory this weekend would pile the pressure on a Tottenham side that faces a difficult away trip to Chelsea on Sunday.

However, Jurgen Klopp will be well aware that his side cannot afford a repeat display of Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta BC - a result which denied the Reds the chance to secure a last-16 spot in the Champions League with two games to spare.

The result itself was a major shock - it was the first time in 137 matches under Klopp that Liverpool have lost a competitive home match by more than one goal, and the first time they have been beaten inside 90 minutes at Anfield in any competition since September 2018.

More worrying would have been the performance, though; Liverpool hit five past Atalanta three weeks earlier but failed to even have a shot on target in the reverse fixture.

Klopp had no complaints at the result but did once again take aim at the scheduling which sees his side thrust back into action for Saturday's early kickoff.

Liverpool made a number of changes in midweek and, while their attack was uncharacteristically blunt during that match, they do boast the second-best goalscoring record in the Premier League this season and are now the only team to have found the back of the net in every game.

At the other end, Liverpool kept their first clean sheet in seven league games last weekend and actually boast a much better defensive record since Virgil van Dijk was injured.

It is now their away form which will be of greatest concern, with Klopp's men having only won three of their last 10 away league games and none of their last three - they have not gone four without a win since March 2017.

Brighton's home record is nothing to brag about either, though, with the Seagulls without a win in their last eight league games at the Amex and having only won two of their last 17, a run which now stretches back more than a year.

Indeed, Brighton's last four Premier League wins have all now come away from home, including last weekend's 2-1 triumph over an Aston Villa side that hammered Liverpool 7-2 earlier this season.

Victory over the Reds themselves would give them back-to-back league wins for the first time since November 2019 and could even lift them above Manchester City in the table for a few hours at least.

To do that, though, Graham Potter's men will need to overcome a torrid record against Liverpool; they have lost each of their last nine meetings with the Merseysiders by an aggregate scoreline of 27-7, conceding twice in the opening eight minutes of the corresponding fixture last season.

In fact, Brighton have never won a top-flight home game against Liverpool, with their only home victory over Liverpool in any division coming in a Second Division match in January 1961.

The Seagulls have also picked up only two points from a possible 42 in previous games against reigning top-flight champions, although both of those points did come against Liverpool - in 1981 and 1983.

Liverpool remain without a host of key first-team players for this match, although they were boosted by the returns of Mohamed Salah and Rhys Williams against Atalanta.

Salah is likely to start again this weekend, and his record against Brighton suggests that he could be a key figure, with five goals and three assists in six previous Premier League meetings.

Diogo Jota's omission in midweek was more a reflection of his increased importance to the team than a suggestion that he is still regarded as back-up to the main front three, and Klopp could once again name a front four including Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane this weekend.

While he may be spoiled for choice in attack, it is in defence and midfield where Klopp finds his options limited, with Fabinho set to return to the side to partner Joel Matip at centre-back.

Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold all remain sidelined for this match, while midfield quartet Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri are all expected to miss out once again.

Captain Jordan Henderson returned to full training on Thursday and so should be involved in some capacity, although he may be eased back into it rather than being named in the starting XI.

Liverpool are by no means the only team with injury problems, though, and Brighton could also be missing as many as seven players - although many of those could yet feature.

Tariq Lamptey is sidelined through suspension following his red card against Aston Villa, while Adam Lallana will be assessed ahead of kickoff, with a groin problem threatening to deny him a reunion with the club he left in the summer.

Leandro Trossard is now back available, while Solly March, Davy Propper and Aaron Connolly are also expected to be passed fit for Saturday's match.

Alexis Mac Allister will miss out due to coronavirus, while Florin Andone, Jose Izquierdo and Christian Walton are also likely to play no part.

Danny Welbeck will be hoping for another start after opening his Brighton account against Villa last time out; he has not scored in consecutive Premier League games since January 2016.

The international break from hell continues for Liverpool FC. Rhys Williams, who has made five appearances for Liverpool this season and played in all three Champions League group-stage matches, is the latest Reds player to suffer an injury.

Given all the key absentees they already have in the back line, this news comes at the absolute worst time. Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are out for most, if not all of the season. Fabinho is also missing while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are doubts for Sunday’s crunch clash versus Leicester City.




Williams could have made his first Premier League appearance, perhaps even in the first team, but that is now doubtful due to a hip injury that kept him out of the matchday squad. The good news is that it was just precautionary.

“He had a very minor stiff hip,” said England U21 manager Aidy Boothroyd of the Rhys Williams issue.

“It was in his best interests to get him back to Liverpool. With all the players, if there’s any potential injuries or niggles then our medical staff is in contact with the club.

“Rhys wasn’t actually on the bench so I thought the best thing was to get him back to Liverpool.”

In addition to the all injuries and doubts in the back line, Liverpool will also be without superstar winger Mohamed Salah, who has tested positive for the coronavirus.



When the third place Reds take on the first place Foxes this weekend, they will be extremely short-handed, to say the least.

Liverpool's injury worries continue to mount with the news that Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson have picked up knocks on international duty.

The Reds already have a host of big-name absences to contend with. Defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all on the sidelines with various injuries, as are midfielders Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Gomez's injury was picked up on the current international break, which has not been kind to the Premier League champions, with Mohamed Salah also testing positive for Covid-19 after he was pictured attending his brother's wedding in Egypt.

Henderson was withdrawn at half-time with what was believed to be a muscle problem as England lost 2-0 against Belgium after admitting that he was unable to continue after the break.

"Jordan had a bit of tightness at half-time and felt he couldn't carry on," said Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

The news is slightly more optimistic for Robertson, who played 120 minutes as Scotland qualified for Euro 2020 with a penalty shoot-out win over Slovakia, before missing Saturday's loss to Slovakia.

However, according to his national team boss Steve Clarke, he could even feature on Wednesday, when his country travel to Israel for their final UEFA Nations League match.

"Andy was probably a little bit worse than the rest, which is why I left him out. It would have been too big a risk," he said.

"But he's coming to Israel so we'll assess him over there and hopefully get him on the pitch. That would be good as we'd like our captain on the pitch."

Liverpool will keep a close eye on the fitness of Andy Robertson after the left-back was ruled out of action for Scotland.

Robertson played 120 minutes on Thursday as Scotland beat Slovenia on penalties after a 1-1 draw to clinch their place in next summer's European Championships.


The defender revealed afterwards he was suffering from a tight hamstring having skippered his country to their first major finals tournament in 22 years.

And he was missing from the 22-man squad that took on Slovakia in their UEFA Nations League clash on Sunday afternoon, one of eight changes made by Scotland boss Steve Clarke.

Liverpool’s injury crisis in defence deepened on Wednesday with the news Joe Gomez is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in England training.
The Premier League champions are expected to be without talismanic centre-back Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season after the Dutchman suffered cruciate ligament damage last month.
Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the next month after picking up a calf injury in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City, while Fabinho — who had deputised at centre-back since Van Dijk’s injury — is also recovering from a hamstring problem.
“I can’t tell you how serious it is because he is yet to have scans. What was upsetting was he was in a fair bit of pain and nobody was around him when the injury happened,” said England boss Gareth Southgate.
“I didn’t like that element of it. We are all hopeful for him that it is not what it might be.”

Jürgen Klopp may be shouting loudest for the reintroduction of the five substitutes rule in the Premier League but he only needed two to complete a comeback victory over West Ham. Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri combined stylishly five minutes from time to take Liverpool to the Premier League summit and equal the club record of 63 league games unbeaten at Anfield.

Jota scored for the third successive game at Anfield after being released inside the visitors’ area by a sublime pass from fellow substitute Shaqiri. The forward’s winner arrived minutes after he had a goal disallowed by Kevin Friend after a VAR check, and ruined an otherwise hugely encouraging away performance for David Moyes’ team.

Liverpool’s vulnerable spot was obvious with Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Joël Matip all missing from central defence and West Ham exploited it to take an early lead. They were indebted to a weak clearance from Joe Gomez, the more experienced centre-half in the home ranks, for edging ahead in the face of a lively start from the champions.
Klopp gave Nat Phillips a Premier League debut alongside the England international with Fabinho out until the next international break with a hamstring injury. The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Stuttgart and was omitted from Liverpool’s Champions League squad this term due to a planned transfer that fell through.
The debutant made a convincing start in his aerial duels against Sébastien Haller, who led the West Ham line in the absence of the injured Michail Antonio, although his foul on the striker inadvertently revealed that Alisson had some concerns with his new-look defence. “Organise quickly, organise quickly,” the goalkeeper shouted as Jarrod Bowen lined up the free-kick. They did not, Haller almost got his head on the delivery, and Alisson did not hold back in telling his teammates exactly what he thought of their delayed response. He had more reason to complain following West Ham’s next attack.

Angelo Ogbonna instigated an incisive move with an intelligent pass out of central defence to Bowen, who had time and space to turn and release Aaron Cresswell on the left. Arthur Masuaku took over and crossed into the heart of the Liverpool penalty area, where Gomez headed what should have been a routine clearance straight to the unmarked Pablo Fornals. The Spanish midfielder punished the lapse with a low shot that beat Alisson via the foot of his right-hand post.

With Declan Rice alert and assured in central midfield, and the visitors switching to 5-4-1 out of possession, Moyes’s side defended their lead comfortably for much of the first half. They had a few let-offs, not least when Salah sent Sadio Mané racing through on goal with a deft touch. Cresswell cut across the striker inside the area but Friend waved play on and, after West Ham were unable to scramble clear, Jordan Henderson side-footed inches wide. A mix-up between Ogbonna and Lukasz Fabianski also allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross to spill across their area but Fabián Balbuena was on hand to clear. Alexander-Arnold, still only 22, was making his 100th Premier League appearance for his boyhood club and swept another decent chance from a free-kick into the West Ham wall.

Liverpool were starting to toil against the well-drilled banks of West Ham’s midfield and defence when they were awarded a soft penalty shortly before the interval. Curtis Jones crossed to Salah on the right of the box and he was caught on the calf by Masuaku as he brought the ball under control. There was contact, and Salah made the most of it. Tellingly there were no protestations from the West Ham wing-back when Friend pointed to the spot and Salah drilled the spot-kick down the middle of Fabianski’s goal.

The visitors looked dangerous whenever they kept possession long enough to venture into Liverpool territory. Masuaku presented Fornals with a chance for a second goal moments after the restart but the goalscorer, meeting the left wing cross at full stretch, diverted his shot tamely at Alisson.
Fornals had another good opportunity to restore West Ham’s lead when latching on to Haller’s header. Liverpool’s defence was exposed and Bowen was completely unmarked to his left but the forward instead opted for a shot that smashed against Andy Robertson’s legs to safety. Bowen’s disgust was not disguised.

Robertson almost made his mark in the opposite penalty box moments later when released behind the visiting defence by a superb Henderson pass. Fabianski blocked the defender’s attempted pull-back and Salah was unable to capitalise on the loose ball. Then came controversy, and the latest VAR decision to go against Liverpool.

Fabianski produced a smart save to deny Mané from 12 yards after the Senegal international was set up by Jota. The ball squirmed back to Jota when the goalkeeper, Mané and Ogbonna all descended on the rebound and the Portugal international converted. VAR, however, reviewed a possible foul by Mané as he challenged for the loose ball with Ogbonna and Fabianski. Friend consulted his monitor and agreed. No goal. But Liverpool, thanks to their substitutes, would not be denied a 52nd victory in their record-equalling unbeaten home run.

Liverpool will look to make it two wins from two in the Champions League when they host Danish champions FC Midtjylland on Tuesday at 8pm.
The Reds made an impressive start to their group stage campaign with a 1-0 win away at Ajax last week. Nicolas Tagliafico’s own goal was enough to separate the two sides in what was a closely fought contest and also Liverpool’s first game without injured defender, Virgil van Dijk.
Midtjylland, meanwhile, were thrashed 4-0 by Italian darlings Atalanta in their opening match, although they did recover to win 3-2 away at Superliga title rivals Brondby on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men will be heavy favourites at Anfield but if the start of this season has shown us anything, it’s that nothing can be taken for granted right now.

Liverpool head to Aston Villa on Sunday evening in a meeting of two sides with a perfect start to the season.

Something has to give at Villa Park, but both will be keen to continue their winning run in the Premier League, particularly after both lost in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Villa have had an admittedly easier start, with the Reds having faced both Chelsea and Arsenal already, but Dean Smith’s side haven’t yet conceded in league play while Liverpool have had a few shaky moments at the back.
