James Milner is set to reprise his role as a makeshift right-back when Liverpool travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday evening.
 

The 32-year-old missed the weekend win over Manchester United as a precaution, but told the club’s official website on Tuesday: “The manager made the decision. It was the right thing not to risk me at the weekend, so hopefully I’ll be fine for the next game.”
 

Milner’s availability should allow Jurgen Klopp to replace Nathaniel Clyne, who played 90 minutes for just the third time since May 2017 in featuring against the Red Devils.
 

Trent Alexander-Arnold would have been in line for a return to right-back duty, but remains sidelined by the foot injury he picked up during last week’s 1-0 win over Napoli.
 

Klopp was positive on the defender’s progress, though, saying: “It actually looks surprisingly good. I think Wolves will still be a bit too early but after that, they told me we can think about him.
 

“But for that, he needs to train. So far he didn’t train but the pain goes down second by second, which is good, and then in the moment when he can deal with it, he is on the pitch, and in the moment he is on the pitch we’ll make a decision.”
 

Other than long-term absentees Joel Matip (collarbone), Joe Gomez (leg), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) and Rhian Brewster (ankle), Klopp has no new fitness concerns.

Two former Champions League winners locks horns at Anfield on Tuesday evening as Liverpool and Bayern Munich face off in the first leg of a highly-anticipated last-16 tie.
Liverpool made it all the way to the final last season but had to work hard to
progress through a difficult group this time around, whereas Bayern eased through Group E to remain on course for a first continental triumph in six years.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville told Liverpool to forget about challenging for the Champions League this season if they were to seriously rival Manchester City for the Premier League title. For a while it looked as though Jurgen Klopp heeded that advice as his side's hopes of progression from Group C were hanging by a thread at one point.
Back-to-back away losses to Red Star Belgrade and Paris Saint-Germain left Liverpool requiring victory at home to Napoli on the final matchday - far from an easy challenge against one of the continent's most dangerous sides. In the end a Mohamed Salah strike 34 minutes into December's match proved the difference , though Klopp also had to thank
Alisson Becker for producing a late wonder save.
It is on such fine margins that memorable runs are built, as was the case last season when Liverpool made it all the way to the final, where they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid. If not for some terrible goalkeeping from
Loris Karius , the man Alisson was brought in to replace in a record transfer last summer, Liverpool may well have added a sixth European crown to their collection.
For a side that made it to last season's final and made it through their group this time around, Liverpool have a surprisingly poor recent record in Europe. In their last eight matches, stretching back to the 2017-18 semi-finals, they have lost five and won three.
Klopp's men have lost four European away games in a row, including all three this term, making Tuesday's first leg at Anfield all the more important. Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 consecutive European matches on home soil, winning 14 of those and last tasting defeat back in October 2014 against Madrid.
It is their second-longest unbeaten streak at home in European competition after their 40-match run between September 1974 and December 1991. If they are to have any hope of booking a place in the quarter-finals at Bayern's expense, their unbeaten home run will surely have to stay intact.
Liverpool have had 10 days' rest between matches, giving Klopp a chance to take his players abroad for a warm-weather training camp. After dropping points in two successive Premier League matches
prior to beating Bournemouth 3-0 last time out, the recuperation period came at just the right time.
The Reds' domestic title hopes are still in their own hands with the final stretch drawing into sight. Now the Merseysiders turn attention back to the European stage, and you get the sense that they will not throw in the towel - despite Neville's words of advice.

Following a slow start to their season that nearly cost Niko Kovac his job, Bayern have hit a good run of form at just the right time and are now right back in the Bundesliga title race.
From nine points adrift of Borussia Dortmund this time last month to two points adrift after 22 matches, albeit having played a game more than the league leaders, Bayern will now consider themselves favourites to win a seventh successive league title.
Kovac's side are also still in contention for German Cup glory, but it is the Champions League that they truly want. Having lifted the most famous club trophy of them all only twice this millennium, the Bavarian giants will be keen to put things right this season.
As one of five teams to remain unbeaten in the group phase, along with Ajax, Barcelona, Lyon and Porto, Bayern have momentum on their side as they attempt to reach the semis for an eighth time in 10 seasons - an incredible record, given the competition.
Bayern are also on a run of eight consecutive Champions League away games without a defeat, with their last loss on the road coming against PSG in September 2017. Only once before have they enjoyed a longer run - 10 games between October 2012 and April 2014.
The German champions were not quite perfect in Group E, though, as they were held home and away by Ajax, conceding three times in their most recent European outing in Amsterdam to just about hold onto top spot.
Bayern were also recently taken to extra time by Hertha Berlin in the DFB-Pokal and had to twice recover from a goal down to see off Augsburg in their final Bundesliga match prior to their Merseyside trip. Results may have been largely positive, then, but Die Roten are still not at their ruthless best.
There is a reason why Bayern are so heavily fancied, though, as they have won 11 of their 14 last-16 ties, including the last seven since an away-goals reverse at the hands of Inter Milan in 2011. That winning run includes 5-1 victories home and away to Arsenal, giving them a record of 10 wins from 15 two-legged ties against English clubs.

The week-and-a-half break between matches has given Klopp an opportunity to bring certain players back up to speed, though a few key men still remain absent.
Klopp has admitted that he is planning for the game without Dejan Lovren , who is carrying a hamstring injury, while Joe Gomez remains on the sidelines with an ankle problem.
To make matters worse for Liverpool, record signing Virgil van Dijk is suspended after picking up three yellow cards in the group phase, meaning that it could well be a makeshift centre-back pairing of Fabinho and Joel Matip .
Liverpool do at least have Trent Alexander-Arnold back available and their front-three trio are all fit, so Klopp will be hoping that Salah, Roberto Firmino and
Sadio Mane can paper over the defensive cracks.
In terms of the visitors, they were given a major injury scare against Augsburg on Friday as Kingsley Coman , the scorer of two goals, limped off with an apparent ankle injury.
Coman has been given the all clear to play at Anfield, however, which is a big boost for Kovac as Thomas Muller will miss out through suspension.
Kovac has a couple of selection decisions to make, including which of Javi Martinez or Leon Goretzka to go with in central midfield, though there is an easy call to make up top as Robert Lewandowski is in great form.
The Poland international leads the Champions League scoring charts this term with eight in total, and he is aiming to find the back of the net for a fifth consecutive European game - something he has not previously managed in the same season.

Jurgen Klopp wants his Liverpool side to be "angry" when they host long-time rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
The Reds can retake the Premier League lead with victory, but the German manager is aware that United will be looking for an immediate response to their midweek Champions League loss.
"From the other side it looks like it is not the best mood - United lost their last game," he said.
"We have our own problems and our own targets and we go for them."

He added: "We fight for our points. We have to be angry on Sunday and we will be."
Liverpool have not lost to United at Anfield since 2013, although they have not beaten them in the past eight league meetings home and away.
There are currently 16 points separating the clubs, with United closer to the relegation zone than leaders Manchester City.
Klopp, however, focused on the historical significance of the fixture.
"It's one of the games which you sign with your contract: try to do everything you have to win it," said the German, whose side are the only unbeaten club in England's top five divisions.
"It's a big one, and if [former United boss] Sir Alex Ferguson says it's the British 'Clasico' then I am really blessed because I was involved in the German Clasico [Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich]. It's a cool game."

United have struggled against their closest rivals since manager Jose Mourinho took charge at Old Trafford in 2016:
They have faced Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal a combined total of 24 times in the league, but have won only eight matches.
In total from those matches, they have collected 31 points from a possible 72.
That is a worse head-to-head record than all the other sides in that mini-league except for Arsenal.
United have had just 263 shots in the 24 previous meetings against City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal - 51 fewer than the Gunners, who are next on the list.
Mourinho's side have faced 102 more shots on their own goal than Liverpool have in the same group of fixtures.
Despite Liverpool's current status as contenders for the title, Mourinho says he does not rate them above the side that won the Champions League in 2005.
"I played against a Liverpool that was European champion," he told Sky Sports.

Group C has been one of the most competitive in this season's Champions League and going into the final round of matches it is Paris Saint-Germain who are in seemingly in the best position to qualify.
The French champions will make it through to the last 16 if they beat Red Star in Belgrade, although they would also progress if Liverpool fail to beat Napoli.

Liverpool will be looking to build on their last-gasp victory over Everton in Sunday's Merseyside derby when they take on struggling Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

The match pits second from bottom against second from top as a Burnley side without a win in seven attempt to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Liverpool.

Sean Dyche has always been a pragmatist and would have been the first to tell his players that last season's seventh-placed finish would guarantee them nothing this term.

However, even he may be surprised by how quickly the Clarets have fallen, and they go into Wednesday match sitting in the relegation zone, just one point and one place off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Already 16 points worse off and having lost three times as many games as the same stage of last season, Burnley are now staring down the barrel of the very real possibility of relegation back to the Championship - a fate they ended up 21 points clear of in 2017-18.

Burnley's early-season troubles were largely written off as being Europa League-related, but they were knocked out of that competition in August and have picked up just two wins from 12 games since then.

In the league alone it is just one point from the last 18 on offer and seven matches without a victory - an ominous run of form with four of their next five matches coming against teams currently in the top six.

The other two members of that top six have recorded 5-0 and 4-0 wins over Burnley respectively already this season, so Dyche may not be particularly optimistic of turning his side's poor form around before the end of the calendar year.

Indeed, Burnley may have missed their best chance to enjoy a positive end to 2018 already, suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of fellow strugglers Newcastle United and Crystal Palace - the latter of whom dominated en route to their first win in nine league games on Saturday.

The primary concern for Dyche is how easily they have been breached this season; the hallmark of his side last term was how organised they were and how difficult it was to break them down, yet in the list of most shots allowed by a team in a single Premier League game this season, Burnley crop up twice in the top three - against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Palace.

The Clarets had conceded just 11 goals at this stage last season, but they will welcome Liverpool to Turf Moor with the second-worst defensive record in the division after 14 matches of this campaign, shipping 29 goals while scoring only 13.

Burnley also possess the worst home record in the Premier League this term, with the anomalistic 4-0 win over Bournemouth in September being their only triumph in their last nine Premier League outings in front of their own fans.

Liverpool will arrive at Turf Moor no doubt still riding high after the nature of their Merseyside derby victory over Everton on Sunday, which not only secured bragging rights but also ensured that they keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Divock Origi was one of the more unlikely heroes - with a helping hand from Jordan Pickford and the crossbar - as he netted a 96th-minute winner at Anfield which sent manager Jurgen Klopp racing onto the field in manic celebration.

FA charges inevitably followed, but the unadulterated outburst of emotion from Klopp outlined how important a victory it was - not just because of the opponents but because of the growing belief that Liverpool could mount a serious title challenge this season.

The general consensus is that Liverpool have been nowhere near their best in an attacking sense so far - an argument backed up by the fact that they are the lowest scorers in the top four - yet they remain just two points adrift of a rampant City side who have been blowing everyone away.

The scope for improvement should be cause for optimism, then, although that improvement does need to be realised sooner or later and the busy December schedule would be the perfect time to begin showing signs of it.

Next week promises to be a huge one for the Reds as they host Napoli in a must-win Champions League clash between welcoming bitter rivals Manchester United to Anfield too, but before then they face away trips to Burnley and Bournemouth.

One of the defining features of Man City's form over the past two seasons has been their relentless accumulation of points in matches against teams they are expected to beat, and Liverpool most continue to match that throughout the season as any unexpected slip-ups could prove costly.

It is so far, so good on that front, with Liverpool's only dropped points this season coming against the other three teams currently in the top four, and a large reason behind that 100% record against clubs outside the Champions League places is their improved defence.

Everton had chances to score on Sunday, but Alisson Becker stepped up to stop the best of them and he, along with Virgil van Dijk et al, has helped Klopp's side to their best ever defensive statistics at this stage of a league season - just five goals conceded from 14 games.

One of the main concerns ahead of Wednesday will be their away form, having lost three and won just two of their last seven on the road, but all three of those defeats came in the Champions League and their most recent domestic game away from home resulted in a 3-0 triumph over Watford.

Liverpool could once again find themselves five points behind come kickoff, with Man City taking on Watford on Tuesday night, but if they can respond with a win of their own at Turf Moor then the pressure would be piled back on City for their trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Liverpool are able to welcome captain Jordan Henderson back into the fold for this match after he missed the Merseyside derby through suspension.

However, the Reds do have a couple of doubts following the win over Everton, with Sadio Mane having suffered a cut to his foot and Andrew Robertson struggling with a dead leg.

Changes are expected from Klopp as he looks to keep his squad fresh, which could mean starts for the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita, Dejan Lovren and James Milner.

Roberto Firmino's poor form over the past two games could convince Klopp to rest the Brazilian for this match, with Daniel Sturridge his most likely replacement despite Origi's derby heroics.

As for Burnley, Robbie Brady picked up an ankle injury during his second-half cameo against Crystal Palace and is not likely to recover in time for this match.

Stephen Ward and Nick Pope also remain sidelined for the Clarets, but James Tarkowski will be hopeful of a recall after being left on the bench at Selhurst Park.

Ragnar Klavan's 94th-minute goal saw Liverpool earn a 2-1 win at Turf Moor on New Year's Day, although Burnley did manage a 1-1 draw at Anfield in September.

The Clarets have also managed to score in each of their last four games against Liverpool, having drawn a blank in 12 of their 15 meetings across all competitions prior to that.

However, if they win 2-1, they won't qualify for last-16 because of an away goals rule.
But, if Liverpool win by two clear goals, they will reach the knockout stages.

I expect them to win though, I saw Everton at Chelsea a couple of weeks ago, they were solid but Chelsea were poor and still had three good chances and if they'd taken one they would have won the game.

I just can't see Liverpool not having those kind of chances and I think they'll take them. I don't think Everton will have a go at Liverpool, but if they defend for 95 minutes they're not going to keep a clean sheet.

Here's a look at some classic derbies over the years...

Liverpool 3-2 Everton 2, 1999

A match memorable as much for the on-field antics of Robbie Fowler as the game itself. Olivier Dacourt stunned Anfield with a goal after just 41 seconds but Fowler restored parity with a 15th-minute penalty.

However, his controversial celebration - pretending to sniff the byline in front of the away end in response to taunts - provoked a hostile response from visiting fans and ultimately landed the striker with a four-match ban.
Fowler added a second shortly afterwards and Patrik Berger's 20-yard volley made it 3-1 with eight minutes to go but Francis Jeffers' strike set up a frantic finish.

Everton 4-4 Liverpool, 1991

One of the most dramatic derbies of all time was an FA Cup fifth-round replay at Goodison Park. The first match had been goalless but the second could not have been more different.

Three times Liverpool took the lead in normal time, twice through Peter Beardsley and once through Ian Rush, but two from Graeme Sharp and one from Tony Cottee saw the hosts equalise each time. John Barnes put Liverpool ahead again in extra-time but once more Cottee levelled.

It was to prove Kenny Dalglish's final match in his first spell as manager, the Scot telling the club of his intention to leave the following day. Everton won the second replay 1-0.

Liverpool 3-2 Everton, 1989

The all-Merseyside FA Cup final was played out against the backdrop of the Hillsborough disaster just weeks before.

John Aldridge's early opener was cancelled out by Stuart McCall in stoppage time, with the Toffees midfielder levelling again when Rush came off the bench to score in extra-time.

However, the Reds striker was not to be denied and hit the winner.

Everton 3-3 Liverpool, 2013

The best recent match between the sides was a humdinger at Goodison Park five years ago.

There was drama from the off as Philippe Coutinho's opener was cancelled out inside 10 minutes by Kevin Mirallas. Luis Suarez restored Liverpool's lead and that was the way it stayed until Romelu Lukaku equalised 18 minutes from time

The home fans were delirious when the Belgian put Everton ahead 10 minutes later but substitute Daniel Sturridge earned Liverpool a point with an 89th-minute header.

Liverpool 3-2 Everton, 1970

A match memorable for its second-half fireworks with all five goals scored in the final 34 minutes. The visitors went ahead through Alan Whittle barely 10 minutes after the interval and, when Joe Royle doubled their lead just past the hour, it seemed the points were heading back across Stanley Park.

However, Steve Heighway crucially pulled one back just six minutes after Everton's second. The winger then crossed for John Toshack, signed from Cardiff 10 days previously, to head home his first goal for the club with Chris Lawler completing the turnaround six minutes from the end.

Liverpool 7-4 Everton, 1933

The highest-scoring Merseyside derby in its long history. Harold Barton scored a hat-trick as the Reds ran riot, with Alf Hanson, Tom Morrison, Harrold Taylor and Syd Roberts also on target for Liverpool.

Meanwhile Dixie Dean grabbed a double for the visitors, alongside strikes from Tommy Johnson and Jimmy Stein.

Matip not thinking about Liverpool exit and vows to fight for first-team role

Joel Matip has dismissed suggestions that he is considering his Liverpool future just yet, insisting he cannot afford such distractions during the season.

The 27-year-old has started just three of the Reds’ 18 matches so far this term, with Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren often preferred at centre-back by Jurgen Klopp.

The contract Matip signed following a 2016 free transfer from Schalke will have just a year to run at the end of the current campaign, meaning the defender is likely to face a decision over whether to leave in search of regular football this summer.

But, for now, he is focused solely on increasing his chances of featuring in Klopp’s starting XIs more regularly this season.

Matip told Standard Sport: “I only concentrate now on the season on Liverpool and there’s nothing else in my mind. Everything else would only distract me.

“I’ve got to wait for my opportunity, I have to work hard - this is the life of a player.

“I try to be in the best form I can be and to be ready if I had to be.”

Liverpool will hope to prevent local rivals Everton dealing a blow to their Premier League title push when the two neighbours meet at Anfield on Sunday.

And Matip is looking forward to an occasion he describes as ‘special’ for both players and fans alike.

He added: “It’s something special for the players, for the people of the town, because with two big clubs like Everton and Liverpool in one town that’s something special.

“For all the supporters this is a special game. If you are in the stadium then you already feel it’s something different.

“You see the atmosphere and then you know that the next 90 minutes it will be [difficult]. Every game is a fight but this will be a massive fight.

“[If you lose] nobody wants to talk to an Everton fan the next day. I think it means a lot to all the people and to us.”

Carlo Ancelotti laughed off Anfield’s reputation as one of Europe’s most intimidating venues by claiming Atalanta will be tougher opponents than
Liverpool.
Ancelotti’s Napoli side are on the brink of qualification to the last-16 of the Champions League but must travel to Anfield, where Liverpool have not lost a European fixture since October 2014, in the final round of matches.

Having coached some of the most famous clubs in the world, including Milan, Real, Bayern and Juventus — as well as spending time at Chelsea — the 59-year-old understands the size of the challenge ahead but will not allow his players to be beaten before they start, or to lose focus on their domestic tasks.
