pcoolioz: aii thanks, I will go get a coal pot I guess, thought the fumes were bad for them thou?+ how much can one find a good coal pot? you can get the clay pot and use, also there are fabricated ones made by welders. Any of the two will do. However, ensure you light the charcoal outside so that there wont be any more smoke before you take it into the pen. |

pcoolioz: okay just found another weak one, the normal ones won't wait for u, this one is just there chilling dosnt send me..sigh..so there ...what could cause this? 1. Are your vaccination and medications up to date? 2. Which vaccination did you administer prior the first mortality you experienced and when? |
Agriculture › Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by macdot(m): 11:17am On Sep 18, 2015 |
pcoolioz: yes that cuddling can be annoying, what's the best heat source I can use...cos seems the lantern isn't effective... light isn't constant here for now, at least till I am able to put bulbs and all.... There are different heating systems that are very effective, it depends on your budget. But for a small scale farmer, charcoal is the cheapest and most effective system to use. |
Agriculture › Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by macdot(m): 10:34am On Sep 18, 2015 |
pcoolioz: okay so after rereading and rereading every, I decided to get some layers but I still decided to experiment with 50broilers gotten from chi basically on the 31st of last month... so for the first 2weeks I lost none, feeling fly with myself as it was my first time and I didn't loose any, but after 2weeks n some days ...mehn the death started, most of th looked like they were stampeded... between two days like 10of them were dead, 5looked battered ..stampede I guess, the others looked like they died of natural causes...just dropped.. then I started noticing sent weak ones, they stopped being active and all, wouldn't eat nor drink, just standing there like they were cold, some struggled weakly till they died, even while on the floor..chipping weakly to death, while some other weak ones ended up bin stampeded before morning, or so I think... so in all I have 33left, getting to 3 weeks old, so any ideas as to what I did wrong? the ones left seem very strong and active thou... i dunno how to solve the stampedes thou, cos they like cuddling up every night, some even go underneath the others when its time to sleep...for heat I use a lantern, although I noticed this period just seems excessively cold.... so I am guessing the other things i might have done wrong were...I gave the vaccine wrong? they were just meant to die? cold? ideas anyone...cos its annoying picking up dead birds morning... I know I would do better the next time since I have some reasons I think may have caused them.. but if u think i flopped in anyway I am open for suggestions. Since it was a stampede, it means the heat was not enough. Any time you notice them cuddling together, it means they are cold and needs heat. That's why they stick together so as to generate heat from their bodies . You need to be observing them especially at night cos when they cuddle, you may loose one or two in the process. |

Agriculture › Re: Beginning A Small Scale Snail Farm by macdot(m): 10:36pm On Aug 30, 2015 |
Neduzze5: Nice nice, you're practicing semi extensive system of snail farming.
But as some one said, the net space is too much and pests can easily come in.
Equally, planting forage for the snails in there would have been a nice one too The problem with the plants is that the snails will eat them up before they germinate. Which means I will have to move them out first so that the plants can grow. I didn't think about the idea earlier so I think my small vegetation will just serve that purpose for now. Bro, what about the feeds that we discussed earlier? |

nnaemeka1990: I always notice brown liquid droppings in my broiler farm.
What's the reason for such watery sh*t?
They are physically agile, but dat watery sh*t is giving me concern. That's a sign of coccidiosis |
