Hello house, I just got a job with a school but I feel I fumbled with negotiation. I told them my minimum is 40k but I'm afraid they will stick to it. I'm yet to resume with them. I just want to ask for tips on how to renegotiate. And I hope I won't lose the job if I renegotiate? Thanks all.
Hmmmm, #stalemate!

1. Firstly, are u really sure u've nailed ds job in d 1st instance?

I don't want to say that today is messed with regards to my job search but honestly, I feel discouraged. I've been applying for job in schools in my neighbourhood since last week. Some said there are no vacancies while others simply collected my cv with the usual "we'll get back to you". Today I visited another school, the routine has been the same. I'll park my car anywhere around and my kids will wait inside for me; this takes just few minutes. Note: they are not attending summer lessons because we travelled earlier when lesson started.
There was enough space in front of today's school and I parked there as instructed by the gateman. I went in, was told that test held last week but there seem to be vacancy left. After few questions by a three-man panel, I was sent to see the Principal at the secondary annex. While leaving I was advised not to leave my kids outside, so they came into the reception including my 7mths old baby. After a short interview and waiting for LONG over there, i started my written test. Because of the elapsed time while waiting, I got uncomfortable and worried about my kids esp the breastfeeding one. I was still writing when a staff was sent to call my attention that my kids were crying and disturbing. I lost concentration immediately and they said I should go and attend to them that they will get back to me. I have never been this angry with myself for long. I'm sitting here blaming the kids and myself. If I had known a test will be conducted immediately, I would have arranged for them to stay with a relative or friend. Do you people think they will call me back? Sorry for the long story
Praise5:
Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I think what prompted this mistake was the silly idea in my head that schools won't just collect application from you and test will follow immediately. I thought it will be the usual dropping of cv and leaving at once, which the kids won't obstruct. Lesson learnt: be prepared for anything so you won't be taken unaware. This incident took place today, if I don't hear from them between now and tomorrow then I'll brace up and visit again.
Right now u are so down emotionally that it be callous of me 2 add 2 ur sorrow, so I'll try 2 be as "gentle" as possible.

1. What happened 2day was NEITHER ur children's fault NOR d school's fault. Truth be told, I agree with u, it's an ABBERATION 4 ur potential employer 2 ask u 2 do a written test+micro teaching on d same day u submit ur application letter. It's outside d norm. Under normal circumstances we know u SUBMIT ur papers FIRST, while they peruse it and call u (if shortlisted) 4 test/interview at a later date. Probably they were forced 2 do so because dy were behind schedule.
The onus ld on u 2 gently TURN DOWN their request, giving them sincere/genuine reason(s) why d test shld be postponed:
(a) u were not prepared at that point in time because of ur children.
(b) u had other plans lined out 4 today etc.

These are all genuine reasons which a reasonable employer-to-be shld favorably consider!

I blv u "gaulked" it because of ur desperation 4 a job! You felt helpless, I sincerely understand ur plight!

2. Since u didn't complete d test (or did u?), there's no point waiting 4 them o! IMOO, they were just trying 2 be POLITE by giving u d usual cliché: "we'll get back 2 u". If u had completed d test, then it's a different ball game, but in ds case, no foundation/bases 4 dm 2 recall u. It's a VERY VAGUE promise. "Come back so and so date" would've been more soothing/reassuring.

3. WHAT 2 DO ?
Go back 2 dm ASAP tomorrow/next tmr (at d most), apologize and tell dm u are now ready! If they still need ur services (which I blv they do, hence their hastiness), they'll allow u 2 do it IMMEDIATELY or they'll give u a DEFINITE DATE 4 d rescheduled interview!

4. Like u said earlier, what's urs will be urs. Always look @ d brighter side of every circumstances.

"To EVERY adversity is an EQUAL OR GREATER BENEFIT"

Good Luck!

Trial at oasis international high school Ibadan

Yesterday i went for an interview in A school in Ibadan oasis international high school
On getting there, i was disappointed with the State of the Club their pitch is worst than what i expected
We where still forced to pay A sum of 50naira each before commencing on the interview

Manage to stay for the interview cause of my expenses from Lagos to ibadan

After the Test interview we where called in one after the other for micro teaching and oral Interview mind you we are more than 100 candidates there for this interview
And their offer was worse than expected
Imagine offering 15-20k for graduate with B. Sc. Ed honor told the board i cant collect nothing less than 45k giving the State of the school

Everybody left the place frustrated and still got beaten by rain on our way back.. We could not get bike or maruwa till we treck 1/2 of the journey back to various abode

Tho i made my findings before going for the Interview even checked on the school website but it was A different pix they use on the webpage

E do me as if make i swear give d school and it management

@Macjc.

It's true ooo.

A friend of mine said sometimes he will miss his two lessons because of unproductive meeting here and there. And once you miss a day, it will be difficult for you to make up for that day because the child is always occupy with other teachers.

When I was at Lekki, once there is meeting teachers will begin to frown their faces like this people don start with their useless meeting.

This issue of everyday meeting is mostly done on the island whether big school or not.

Some thing I like about teaching in all these big schools is connection. My brother in law works in Lekki and had the opportunity to teach Oduah's children [former minister of aviation]. His pay was 100k and above, depending on how he came in a month.
Though it was stressful because the traffic from Lekki to VGC was something else. But he made his dou, rented a flat, got married , bought a car in less than 2 years in teaching in Lekki.
On point! Rezzy, on point!
There's a kind of "transfer fee" + other "condiments" that'll make ur heart skip 7 beats like in ur friend's case. Good 4 him. Fortunately, he doesn't fall into d 1st category (ie case 1) in d sense dt:

(a) His abode - VGC is in d SAME ZONE AS LEKKI as compared to SANGO~LEKKI in my last illustration; walahi, dem no be mate at-all!!!

(b) He has d (i) TIME and (ii) CHANCE/OPPORTUNITY of doing PRIVATE TUTORIALS!!! So, he doesn't fall into case 1 at all. He is exempted.

The major issue is: will ur school activities give u allowance 2 do ur own runz by d side as in d case of ur friend (without affecting ur legal duties of course)? If the answer is NO, then he/she FALLS PERFECTLY into d 1st category.
Shikena!

U'll notice dt ur gee was able 2 achieve all he had achieved because he HAD (EXTRA TIME) TO DO HIS OWN RUNZ!
That is how important it is 2 have some time 4 urself 4 PRIVATE TUTORIALS.

What private tutorials is to an average teacher is what allowances are to our senators/reps. Your salary is just what it is - BASIC SALARY. The extras from ur RUNZ is d "koko"! (in as much as its not detrimental to d school)

CONCLUSION:
Again, let's ensure we look at d broader pix. Let's not be carried away by d gross pay but let's focus on d net pay, ie, let's put other factors in2 consideration.

Thanks
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Strictly For Those Interested In Teaching Jobs by MacJC:
To PLAYERS ON TRANSFER TRIALS:
THE BIGGER PICTURE.
Pls in d bid 2 sign 4 clubs let's take a look at the BIGGER PICTURE!
IMOO, what matters most is d FLEXIBILITY of d work.
CASE 1:
Club "A" wants 2 sign u for, let's say 100k with d following conditions:

(i) closing time = 6pm, so in essence, ALL ur fruitful part of d day had been sapped by d school.

(ii) private lessons is PROHIBITED, even if d student's parent made d move.

(iii) whether u have lectures or not, u must not leave d school UNTIL closing time+other "big schools" protocols.

(iv) u are given a marketing target 2 bring students 4 d school, like someone mentioned on this thread about NewHall Int sch, lekki.

(v) u practically travel 2 work everyday eg working in lekki but living in sango, spending at least 1k on transport(=20k per month, or 25k-with Saturdays) leaving u with net pay of 75-80k)

(vi) u are practically SPENT due 2 day2day school work+traffic hold-up (Some spend as much as 3hrs on d road) by d time u get home by 9pm, which time u want take do private lessons? Would u even have d strength?

(vii} u even go to school (school lessons) on Saturdays COMPULSORILY. Which time u want take develop/upgrade urself (eg pgd's certifications etc). Remember, ds no be govt work o, so (in most cases) no pension!

(viii) they feel they "own" u/ are doing u a favor because they are paying u "heavilly"(sic) irrespective of ur competency/handwork.

CASE 2:
Club "B" signs u for 40-50k and:

(i) closing time is 3-4 pm, which means u still have at least 2 "light" hrs 2 do ur own runz (eg home Tutor, vocational studies, certificate upgrade etc). Moreover, NO COMPULSORY SATURDAY LESSONS.

(ii) private teaching is allowed in as much u do it during break/after school hrs, that means more cash-flow.

(iii) flexibility in quickly touching 1/2 places outside during ur free periods.

(iv) ur school is within ur hood, so no transport fare "hole". "Stress of traveling " is also eliminated.

(v) due to (i} and {iv} above, u have EXTRA ENERGY 2 do ur runz. If u can get 5 private teaching locations @ 10k/location, that gives 50k. Add that to ur 40-50k, that gives u 90k minimum.

(vi) since ur SATURDAYS ARE YOURS (and not d school's) , u can upgrade urself certificate-wise, have more time on ur laps 4 private home teaching, hence more income!

CONCLUSION: When u look @ it finely, u'll see dt what u lose @ d end of d day in signing 4 dt "big" club may be MORE than d gain.

So in putting Pen 2 paper, ie b4 u make dt "mega-deal" move, ensure u don't fix ur gaze on the GROSS PAY. Instead, put all other factors into consideration, ie, LOOK AT THE NET PAY!

Just landed it about 3 weeks ago. An IGSCE student and a primary 3 kid. I spend 3hrs with them thrice a week and collect 3k per visit.
Hmmmm, Bekwara, ur head dey there!
**fetches calculator**
3 'visits' @3k per visit ===> 9k per wk
4 wks @ 9k/wk =========36k/mnt PER LOCATION o!
My personal person, tnx 4 "lending urself brain".
What u need 2 do now is MULTIPLY ur locations.
If u can have 5 of such locations, that fetches u 180k/month as an "ordinary" private tutor o!
