@proffmanue you need to be more precise in describing the error you are getting. Does this happen at the login screen, or where? To me this is vague and will do well with a little more clarity. Cheers. |
@okponee minis are generally meant for working on-the-move and so they have less powerful than other types. For your intended usage, cough out more money to obtain a mid range machine and not a netbook. I can't say 'get a machine with core i7, athlon, etc' but get the idea that with 90-110k or so you will get a machine that suit your needs. Cheers. |
megatainer:there are so many causes of blue screen, read up on some over here http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/l0611/32l11/32l11.asp , and here too, http://www.astahost.com/info.php/Bsod-Error-Amp-It39s_t14853.html finally, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death |
Kay-baba: Kay-baba:@kay-baba you need to explain better, maybe enumerate the issues you have in a more logical way e.g tell us your machine model, OS, browser etc. then mention whether or not it has had any physical damage, etc. I don't see the connection between your windows media player not running and your network connection. Be clear when explaining your problems. Cheers. |
@hakon ours is an enterprise plan with a dedicated bandwidth. I do believe they sometimes throttle the bandwidth. we went for this plan because we service our subscribers online. Cheers ![]() |
@kosovo it seems your machine's sound driver is missing and you need to reinstall it. Install it from the driver cd that came with your machine or download it from lg's website. Cheers. |
@hakon you need to understand that using satellites is much more expensive than using fibre and right now we almost entirely depend on satellites for example, where i work, we spend $3000 monthly for 512/256 kbps (needless to say we dont even get those speeds) imagine! So tell me how do want cafe owners to reconcile getting faster speeds and still be in business, there's just no way. How much do they make in a month and can the amount offset the huge bill from their isp? No? How about other operating costs? Then think of making a reasonable profit. Our best bet is a fibre backbone ( it can carry way more bandwidth, it is not suceptible to interference, it has a lower latency compared to satellites) but before then, we'll just have to endure the frustration. Cheers. |
@nedu2000 it seems your network card driver is gone (dont ask). To check open control panel, then open administrative tools and double-click device manager. Look thru the entries and look for ethernet or network orsimilar (it varies), if there's a yellow '?' beside the entry, you need to install the driver, you can get it from the driver cd that came with your machine or better still get the latest one from support and downloads section of hp.com but if you see a red 'x', it means that the device is disabled, so right click the entry and select enable. Cheers. |
Yes we do not yet have the speed and reliabilty of internet connection obtained say, in europe but you should understand that the facilities to bring this speed and reliability to Nigeria and sub saharan Africa in general cost a lot of money. Currently, most if not all internet traffic to and from Nigeria is transported via satellites which is suceptible to weather, interference and usually has a higher latency (time taken for a packet to reach its destination). Only fibre can solve these problems, or better still if an internet gateway is established in the country that is why we are hoping that the glo-1 cable sees the light of day. If only our NITEL was properly managed, we probably would've started enjoying faster speeds, greater reliability and lower rates wrt internet access. Cheers. |
@mobinga it's either you are running other memory intensive applications at the same time esp if your machine 'belong to' the low end segment or the disc you are copying has bad sectors (the disc is bad). Cheers. |
@wobnet formatting the harddrive is always the last resort, you should have advised him on how to detect and flush malware first instead of telling him to format besides in my last post, i told him to try a usb keyboard with his primary keyboard disconnected before he buys a keyboard. I think you will do better by adopting a differential diagnosis approach instead of this one size fit all approach of formatting, did you consider the possibility of the problem not going away after he has formatted his harddrive? He probably would lose custom settings, programs and maybe even documents, did you think about the licensing terms and conditions of all his installed software, or dont you believe in paying for software? Honestly, not to belittle you but your previous post was shallow and not in line with best practices. Cheers @lasunray get a usb keyboard plug to your machine after disconnecting the 'bad' one, if you still have the same problem your 'bad' keyboard is actually fine then we begin to think along the line of malware and how to get rid of them. Cheers. |
First, I dont think it is starcomms duty to setup outlook express for you, but here is what you can do. If it is a corporate mailbox (exchange, internet mail) you want to setup, contact your company's network admin/support. If gmail is what you want, search for the settings in gmail help pages(google it), it provides a step-by-step guide to setting up your mail client (outlook express, etc). For yahoomail, yahoo provides this service for paid users only, but you can download YPOPS! (google it), read the setup guide to help you configure outlook. I hope I have been helpful. Cheers. |
@wobnet why tell him to reformat windows when all he should do is replace his keyboard? @lasunray first, get a new keyboard, if that doesn't work we'll then consider something else. You can also try out a usb keyboard after disconnecting ur current one to see if u still have issues. Cheers. |
@seun0622 I think you've got spyware (redirector -- to be more specific) so get a good anti spyware (dont ask how), scan your machine remove those spies and maybe you'll be fine. Cheers ![]() **peeps viewing this thread** dont click on the links in seun0622's post as you might get infected with the same spyware |
@victorazy your picture seems photoshopped, so fake!! |
100m is the max segment length of fast ethernet(100MBPS) lan. You cannot boost the signal without using a repeater which is unnecessary, however you can reduce latency by making sure that the network cables do not run side-by-side with power cables, if they must, cover them with trunks. Also, try to reduce the segment length to say 80m and make sure you are using cat-5e UTP cablesu. Cheers. |
@beryllol u probably need to install flash player for your browser. Head over to filehippo.com and search for it (2 types exist - for internet explorer and for non internet explorer) and download the appropriate one. Then install it and hopefully u should be able to play videos from on the net. Cheers. |
macomrades@yahoo.com you wont regret meeting me |
20 August, anyone?? |
I cant stop laughing. Wow! Honestly guys u need to stop all this its all funny to read but we're grown-ups, except this thread is an means to transfer aggression & entertain us if so, game on. Looking forward to a truce though |
in addition, you need to set up a transparent caching proxy to speed up web access for your customers. |

Boot the system when u see ur wallpaper, press ctrl+alt+delete to bring up task mgr. Click new task &type 'explorer' if you still dont see ur desktop, click new task again and type 'nusrmgr.cpl' & hit enter. This will open the user account window. Now add a new account with admin privileges, then restart the machine and log into the neW account. you can now move ur files from the old account and safely delete it. |
Your battery is dead. Simple. |
Hp esp pavillion has issues with their batteries while dell's chassis esp inspiron are defective, Go for Asus and u wont regret it |
Look, simply follow the diagram above. u have eight wires, arrange one end of the cable as u see on the left, then arrange the other end as is shown on the right. Remember to hold the rj45 connector with the pins showing on top while inserting the wires then make sure that they go all the way to the end before crimping them. For the network settings, assign static ips to both computers e.g 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 and put them on the same subnet 255.0.0.0. If you just want to share/move/copy files, put them on the same workgroup & restart both systems. You can now drag and drop files into the shared folders which can be accessed from the other machine(if u cant see the shared folder, u can temporarily disable the firewall on both machines). For internet connection sharing, u need to enable it thru the network adapter properties of the 'server' then use the 'server' ip as the default gatway of the client. Everything should now work. Just follow he steps one at a time. Cheers. |
I digress, Peeps, how best can we make people see the importance of alternatives (ubuntu) for everyday use in NGA esp. When windows is forced down our throats as part of what we MUST pay for in most cases when u purchase a new pc? Agreed ms office is second to none, exchange doesn't play well with non ms products and for the gaming enthusiasts, windows remains the best choice; all these aside there is still a large section of the populace that just want to watch movies, do simple word processing and wouldn't say no to some eye candy. imho the rate of adoption of linux is too low & 1-at-a-time-1 recruitment isn't exactly going to create mass appeal for the penguin. What must THE INITIATED do to spread penguin-awareness in Nigeria?? |
Hi guys. I think i've found my home in this thread. Let me know if you need any help on networking how-tos, or more specific things like ios, protocols, acl, etc. I prefer hands-on learning to cramming dumps and only knowing it on paper. Thanks to you nateevs for starting this, |
PM me. i have a bunch, |
HC i see your point. lmao. to all those saying people the world over make mistakes while writing, i agree but from what i know most nigerians make those mistakes because they don't know the correct spellings of many words and they blame it almost all the time on typos. my point is that they will repeat the same errors when they re-write those words which they couldn't spell correctly. ![]() |
