An Ikeja High Court was on Thursday thrown into confusion after an unnamed witness slumped and died in the court just before testifying before Justice O.A. Olayinka in a land case.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deceased, who was in his late 30s, had come court to testify in a land dispute.

“Before the case was called for trial, he started coughing and gasping and had to leave the courtroom.

“He was vomiting a lot of blood and onlookers were scared to go near him.

“He collapsed on the corridors of the courtroom and a medical team came in an ambulance to take body away.

“His lawyer informed Justice Olayinka of his client’s death and she immediately stopped proceedings for the day,” a witness said.

When NAN visited the courtroom, clots of blood were seen on the corridors of the courtroom as well as the blood-stained shirt and leather slippers of the deceased.

A court registrar, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN:“I am not authorised to speak on what happened in this court today, it is only the Chief Registrar that can speak.”

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced 24-year-old hair stylist, Joy Benson, to one month imprisonment for damaging the windscreen of a taxi worth N15,000.
The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, convicted Benson as she admitted committing the offence.

The judge, however gave the convict N5,000 option of fine, and warned her to be of good behaviour and desist from fighting.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that the matter was reported by one Jonah Ben of Jabi Dakibiyu, Abuja, at the Utako Police Station, on May 4.
Zannah said that on the same date at about 4 a.m. the convict boarded Ben’s taxi from Park Palace Hotel to Utako village at the agreed price of N300.
He said that the convict’s boyfriend paid Ben N500, and asked him to keep the balance. The prosecutor alleged that when they got to Utako ,the lady insisted on collecting the balance.
Zanna informed the court that when Ben refused to give her the N200, she started fighting him, and in the process she broke the windscreen worth N15, 000. He said that during police investigation the convict admitted committed the offence.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 327 of the Penal Code.

It has been revealed that more of the kidnapped Chibok Girls still in Boko Haram captivity will soon be released as plans are already in place.

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, on Sunday expressed optimism that more Chibok girls would be released soon. He spoke in Ibadan at the 3rd General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South West (MUSWEN).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 82 Chibok girls were released by the terrorist sect, Boko Haram, on Saturday.
The minister said more of the girls held hostage by the insurgents would be set free as government was adopting the same method used in brokering the earlier releases.

Shittu also said that the president needed the prayers of Nigerians in regaining his health as well as tackling the challenges confronting the citizenry.

He said the current administration was averse to propaganda, adding that it was diligently working hard to put the country on the path of growth and development.
“It is now clear that Buhari has come today and you know that his body language is enough to get things working in a better way.
“Electricity has improved, price of petroleum products has stabilised, corruption has reduced to the barest minimum, Boko Haram is no longer in control of territories and the Niger Delta issue has been resolved,’’Shittu said.

Shittu also said that for the first time in the history of the country, telecommunication contributed about 10 per cent to Nigeria’s GDP.The President of MUSWEN, Alhaji Sakariyau Babalola, in his remarks, urged government at all levels to do more for the people.
Babalola advised the Federal Government in particular to quicken the pace of work on its social investment programme, saying it could help improve the economic wellbeing of citizens.
He enjoined all Nigerians to pray for good health for the president and all leaders in the quest to promote development.
Babalola also rallied support for the anti-graft war, saying corruption had been a major factor that had not allowed Nigeria to claim its rightful place in the comity of nations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that dignitaries at the occasion included Justice Tijani Babalakin and Abdul-Jabar Ajibola, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MUSWEN.

Also present was Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere, the President-General of the League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta.

Doctors have surgically removed 57 pieces of $100 notes from the stomach and intestines of a 30-year-old Colombian woman who had swallowed the money in a desperate bid to hide it from her husband during a domestic spat.
The rest of the bills were passed through her colon.

The woman swallowed the money, according to surgeons who removed the money from her body.

The Colombian woman told the local RCN television channelthat she had saved up the money for a holiday with her husband after having sold several electrical household items.

Doctors said they were able to surgically extract 57 pieces of $100 bills from the woman’s stomach and intestines.
Director of Surgery at the University Hospital of Santander, Juan Paulo Serrano, said the majority of the bills were extracted through a gastronomy through the stomach.

Additional rolls would be passed through the colon, he added.

“Before the Presidential Initiative on Fertilizer, what we had was that we were importing and subsidizing fertilizer and scarce foreign exchange was going to fertilizer subsidy. “Today, with the presidential initiative on fertilizer, we now take phosphate and potassium from Morocco and Europe and we now blend it locally in Nigeria here. And with that, we are cutting the cost of fertilizer by 33 percent. “Not that alone, we’ve been able to revive 11 blending plants. Before now, only five blending plants were working at 10 percent capacity, and we saved about $100 million in foreign exchange and about N60 million in budgetary provision.”

Legal practitioner, Ebun-olu Adegboruwa, has called for shut down of all sectors in Nigeria pending the time President Muhammadu Buhari resigns.

Adegboruwa said this in a statement on Friday titled ‘Let us paralyse the system’.

He warned that the country may go through another ‘Yar’Adua experience’ judging by happenings in recent months.

He said it was now clear that a cabal was holding Nigeria to ransom and treating Buhari like a personal property.

“I hereby call upon all the good people of Nigeria across the land to rise up to challenge the cabal that is holding Nigeria to ransom, in the face of the apparent incapacity of the President to direct the affairs of Nigeria, on account of his ill health,” Adegboruwa noted.

“Let the National Assembly be shut down. Let all the courts be closed down. Let all the banks be locked up. Let all offices be closed, especially public offices. Let all schools, markets, hospitals and all such institutions, be shut down completely. Let them be TOTAL PARALYSIS.

“Let all official activities be suspended, until such a time that the President agrees to resign, and until the President disengages himself and his cabal from governance, in order to allow our nation Nigeria, move forward.

“We have travelled this route before and we are not prepared to go through the Yar’adua experience again.

“This is an urgent patriotic call upon all Nigerians to ACT NOW”, he added.

The leadership of the University of Jos has moved to curb the spate of sexual immorality among ladies with a check on their mode of dressing.


Authorities of the University of Jos on Wednesday directed its security agencies to arrest any student whose dressing assaults the sensibilities of the members of the university community.

The institution also warned that improperly dressed students would be barred from entering offices and attending lecturers.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof Sebastian Maimako, gave the directive in Jos on Wednesday during the matriculation ceremony for 7,000 students for the 2016/2017 academic session.

According to him, 31,759 candidates chose UNIJOS as their first choice with 25,785 for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and 5,974 for Direct Entry in the 2016/2017 session.

The VC said that although the social media had remained the vogue of the present society, it should not be used for negative reasons.

He said, “In line with the extant rules of the university, no student is permitted to publish anything concerning the university without the written permission of the vice-chancellor through the registrar.”
