Zainab Abiola, counsel to Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC), has described her client’s probe as a “hatchet job.”

In an interview with TheCable, Abiola, who was walked out of the panel’s sitting on Monday, said there is no evidence that Magu is guilty of the allegations against him.

President Muhammadu Buhari set up the panel to probe corruption allegations levelled against the anti-graft czar.

At its sitting at the presidential villa on Monday, Wahab Shittu, Magu’s lead counsel, was joined by Abiola and Aliyu Lemu, another of his lawyers.

But Ayo Salami, head of the panel, insisted that only Shittu would be allowed to defend Magu, and asked his other lawyers to leave the venue.

Speaking with TheCable about her experience, the lawyer, who is one of the widows of the late MKO Abiola, said it is wrong for the panel to refuse Magu’s lawyers access to their sitting.

“This is a democratic dispensation, you cannot bring military tactics, a Hitler’s Gestapo rule to this type of occasion,” she said.

“The panel was set up to be public. How then did it become a private sitting with Emperor Salami? He has become an emperor. He told me personally that there is only one chair for a lawyer. So I said, if there is only one chair, send for more chairs now.

“He called the DSS, they were fully armed. So, we left. But the other lady, Fatimah, was bundled and put in a cell, in a prison cell. So, there is a prison in the presidential villa? Nigerians should worry for themselves.”

Abiola, a former presidential aspirant, further told TheCable that while the former EFCC chairman’s rights are being trampled upon at the moment, it could be anyone else’s turn next.

“If you see how Magu was just sitting there, like a sheep without a shepherd. Like a Christmas goat about to be slaughtered by Emperor Salami. Why would they refuse me access to such a fundamental probe? It is a nullity, very shambolic,” she added.

“They don’t have anything against Magu. Not a shred of evidence. The pastor they said took the money. FCMB has apologised in three national papers to Magu and the pastor. They also said Magu did not investigate the P&ID case and he was exonerated.

“What is the allegation? How can lawyers not be allowed to represent him? It is not as if we went alone; we were introduced by Magu himself. Did they imagine that it will be only one lawyer defending a man like that?

“Twenty-two allegations, 22 lies. The fact of the matter is that this is not a panel of inquiry. It is a Kangaroo contraction with Salami as the emperor.”

Magu has often accused the panel of not giving him fair hearing, saying he has not been allowed to defend himself.

After he requested the panel to summon Malami to give evidence of his alleged crimes, the AGF said he would gladly testify against him if asked to do so.

The Nigerian Muslim rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the guerilla-style killing of Muslims and Fulanis in Zangon Kataf. The killings occurred on 8th and 9th September, 2020 thereby violating the peace pact of 22nd August, 2020.


MURIC condemned the killings in a press statement issued on Monday, 14th September, 2020 by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.


The statement reads:

“Christian youths of Zangon Kataf have violated the 22nd August, 2020 peace pact initiated by the Agwa Atyap, Sir Dominic Gambo Yahaya between the Atyap and Hausa/Fulani. The breach occurred on Tuesday 8th September, 2020 when they launched guerrilla-like attacks on Muslims and Fulanis.

“The attacks resulted in the killing of three unarmed and defenseless Fulani near Gora Gan. Those killed were Abdullahi Hassan, Yusuf Hassan Sogiji and Abubakar Hassan. Two other Fulani men, Musa Hassan and his father, Malam Hassan are still being treated in Jama'a Clinic in Zonkwa after sustaining various degrees of injuries during the attack.


“Another Fulani Muslim, AbdulRashid Lawal Malan was killed by the Christian Kataf militia the following day, Wednesday, 9th September, 2020 in Kurmin Masara, near Bakin Kogi bridge. Maitalata Idris Narutu, a Fulani and native of Zango urban, who lives in Dokan Lere narrowly escaped being killed when his car was stopped at an illegal roadblock mounted by Atyap youth militia.

“The setting up of roadblocks by the youth militia contravenes the terms of the peace pact entered on 22nd August, 2020. Both local and international stakeholders must hold the Christian Atyap militia of Southern Kaduna responsible for starting the vicious cycle of bloodshedding after the recent peace pact.

“MURIC strongly condemns these killings and attacks on law-abiding Muslims. We call for stronger presence of security agents. It is high time soldiers are drafted to Southern Kaduna to enforce law and order. We advocate long term military presence until the inhabitants of Southern Kaduna learn how to peacefully coexist.

“As an organization whose motto is ‘Dialogue, No Violence’, we frown at violence in all its ramifications. We are fully committed to a peaceful approach to the Southern Kaduna crisis. We therefore call on both parties to sheath their swords.”

Two officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were Monday confirmed dead and 10 others missing after gunmen attacked two buses conveying 26 officials in Nasarawa State.

The convoy which was headed for the FRSC Academy in Udi was said to have come under attack around 8am at Udege junction, along Mararaban-Udege between Adoka, Nasarawa State.

Those missing were alleged to have been kidnapped by the gunmen suspected to be bandits.

According to a statement by FRSC Corps Public Education Officer (PEO), Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem, the officials were drawn from Sokoto and Kebbi State commands and were travelling in two buses.

He said one of the officials was reported to have died during the attack while another passed on at the hospital.

“Four others were injured, eight escaped unhurt and 10 unaccounted for as they were allegedly kidnapped by the assailants.

“The Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has immediately reported the incident to relevant authorities for prompt rescue of the kidnapped staff while investigations to ensure that the assailants are brought to book is ongoing.

“The Corps Marshal has called on all staff of the commission not to be deterred by this unfortunate incident. He assured that the commission will work closely with relevant security agencies to ensure that the criminal elements are brought to book and justice served while the missing personnel are found,” said Kazeem.

Dr Olapade Agoro, a former presidential candidate and founder of the National Action Council (NAC), has said it is doubtful if the South East will produce the President in 2023 even though a lot of people are canvassing for it.

Yawe said the ACF said was not worried about the emergence of the North-Central Peoples Forum. On Wednesday, prominent leaders from the North-Central announced their exit from the ACF, citing the worsening insecurity in northern Nigeria.

The NCPF, which has as its interim Chairman, a former Minister of Health, Gabriel Aduku, said it would fight insecurity in the North-Central.

Since the Biafra War getting out of the Lugard Amalgamation has been the determination of Igbo people. That day is now closer at hand. There are various Self-determination groups and platforms but only ONE of them is hindering our progress to Self-determination. It is the cult headed by Supreme Leader (so ridiculous!) Nnamdi Kanu called IPOB.

It is bad enough that Kanu is deceiving his cult members and defrauding them of their money. He and his IPOB cult have absolutely no capacity to bring about their brand of “Biafra” or anything good for Ndi-Igbo.

With hate, aggression and insults Kanu and his IPOB cult are hoping to put division between Ndi-Igbo and our neighbours of Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ibibio, Ogoni, Ogoja etc, in fact with all our brethren of SS. They hope to Isolate Ndi-Igbo, and we can never let that happen. In these modern times, Alliances are very necessary.

Furthermore, trading is our business. We shall be known globally as the best traders of Africa. When someone asked Kanu what will happen to Igbo businesses outside of the IPOB version of “Biafra”, Kanu replied that being alive should be the concern not any business. You see, Kanu has no plans at all, so can only talk like a baby. Ndi-Igbo will not return to a situation of being given a paltry £20 as happened after the War.

There is a Self-determination platform called Lower Niger Congress (LNC) that comprises the ethnic nationalities of SE and SS together yet each has Self-determination. With this LNC platform Ndi-Igbo will NOT be isolated as we will be with our SS family. Plus, LNC has an Alliance with Yoruba and Middle Belt so that our businesses, properties and assets in Yoruba land and Middle Belt remain safe and intact. Is this LNC option not the very best one for Ndi-Igbo? What kind of Onye Igbo would accept isolation and loss of his business in seeking Self-determination when he can get that Self-determination with Alliances and keep his businesses and property? LNC is off course the platform for Ndi-Igbo to cling to! Also, just imagine going to United Nations and other international organisations: we would want to look respectable in a substantial country would we not? That is what we will be if we are part of LNC’s strategy.

As for Kanu and his IPOB cult, their hate and attempts to isolate Ndi-Igbo from our SS brethren must be rejected and resisted. The members of this cult have been brainwashed to hate and insult, and even harm. Can UN or any international organisation dialogue with such a cult group? Please, Ndi-Igbo let’s be serious and smart. NO organisation that values its good reputation will ever want to partner or collaborate in any way with the IPOB cult. They issue Sharia-like death threats to Ndi-Igbo and are a wild bunch. IPOB cult members are not that many in number and will be less than half a percent of Ndi-Igbo but they are noisy and aggressive. Most Ndi-Igbo don’t even want them to be in our lands because they give us a bad name internationally and make the strong and proud Igbo people look like fools. Enough is enough. Ndi-Igbo had been quiet regarding IPOB cult but we now need to let them know that they do not in any shape or form represent Ndi-Igbo. If they like they can represent their jobless leader Kanu, but they can no longer be speaking and acting in the name of Ndi-Igbo. This is very important to do.
