TYPES OF EPILEPSY
Seizures are divided into two main types – Partial and generalized seizures. However, there are many other uncommon types of seizures that people can have. If you have epilepsy you usually have recurrences of the same type of seizure. However, some people have different types of seizures at different times.

PARTIAL SEIZURES
(Non-convulsive seizures)
• Affect only one area of one side of the brain
Simple Partial Seizures
• A person does not lose consciousness
• It may involve uncontrolled movement, emotions, or sensations
• The person does not have convulsions
Complex Partial Seizures
• Do cause a person to lose awareness
• May start with a blank stare
• Can progress into chewing movements, picking at or fumbling with clothing, mumbling
and performing simple, unorganized movements over and over again
Important: Any partial seizure can progress into a generalized seizure.

GENERALIZED SEIZURES
• Affect both sides of the brain
• Produce a loss of consciousness
• Are categorized into several types
Generalized Tonic Clonic Seizure
(also known as a grand mal seizure)
• Usually lasts 1 to 3 minutes.
• Begins with stiffening of the limbs
• Followed by jerking of the face and limbs
• Wetting or soiling of clothing may result from the seizure
Myoclonic Seizures
• Usually lasts 1-2 seconds
• Rapid, jerking movements of the body that are often confused with a person being clumsy
• May occur singularly or in groups
Atonic Seizure
(Also known as drop attacks)
• Usually last less than 15 seconds
• Sudden loss of muscle tone causes an individual’s head to drop and loss in their posture.
The person may fall to the ground
• Injury is more common; a helmet may need to be worn to protect the head
• This seizure occurs singularly/rarely in groups

Absence Seizures
(also known as Petit Mal)
• Usually last less than 10 seconds but can last up to 20 seconds
• The most difficult seizure to recognize
• The person will look like they are daydreaming but if you try to get their attention they will not respond
As already stated, not everyone that has a seizure has epilepsy. There are other medical conditions that cause someone to have a seizure. These are referred to as non-epileptic seizures. More in subsequent posts.

Do you know that there are over 40 different types of seizures that people can have?
Well that is according to epilepsy.org.au and epilepsyinfo.org. In my next post, I will write about the types of epilepsy.

WHAT CAUSES EPILEPSY?
Unknown cause (idiopathic epilepsy)
In 7 out of 10 cases, no cause for the seizures can be found. The abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain occur for no known reason. It is unclear why they start, or continue to occur. Hereditary (genetic) factors may play a part in some cases. People with idiopathic epilepsy usually have no other brain (neurological) condition.
Medication to treat seizures usually works very well for patients that fall under this group.
Symptomatic epilepsy
In some cases, an underlying brain condition or brain damage causes epilepsy. Some conditions are present at birth. Some conditions develop later in life.
The following is a list of factors that have the potential to cause epilepsy:
• Abnormal brain development
• Head injury.
• High fever in children under 5 years old
• Hereditary (Genetic) factors
• Loss of oxygen to the brain
• Stroke
• Brain lesion/tumor
• Previous infections of the brain such as meningitis and encephalitis.
Health / Re: Expert Warns People Not To Kill Mosquitoes. by malakus(m): 6:01am On Jun 07, 2017
Donswatter:

A Professor of Entomology at the University of Ilorin, Adeolu Ande, has decried killing mosquitoes, saying the insects are friends to humans that deserved to be properly managed.

Ande made the statement on Monday in Ilorin in a paper he presented at a public seminar organised by the university.

In his paper with the title “Consider the ways of Ants and be Wise,” the entomologist described insects as the “most successful and influential group’’ of organisms in the biosphere.

He said that humans had a lot to learn from insects in order to be wise.

“Human life is beset with inevitable associations with insects that have over the years influenced human destiny positively and negatively.

“Negative influences, such as disease transmission, crop losses, food spoilage, economic losses and nuisance value caused by less than 5 per cent of insect species have been exaggerated by man.

He said that positive influences of insects are not unappreciated and downplayed.

He listed some of them to include: pollination of flowers, waste recycling and sustenance of the ecosystem.

Others, he said, include source of silk, shellac, cochineal, therapeutic agents, aesthetics, biological control agents and food source.

The don said that man deliberately misunderstood the role of mosquitoes and frequently described them as causing the diseases they transmit.

He said, “In the actual sense, mosquitoes are equally sick but inadvertently and unwillingly convey pathogens that are the real causal agents of these diseases.

“The female mosquito could be described as an example of a true mother who is forced to undertake suicide mission in its bid to provide for its unborn children.

“The adult female mosquitoes have exceptional value for child raising hence the level of commitment and risk they take on the mission that entails decision between life and death.

“The after-effect of this commitment is a well thought out plan that forestalls most of the factors that may stand in the way of raising good children.

“I am sure most human females will not take comparable decision in the face of similar attendant risks.

“It is however certain that children born after well thought out and risky conditions are better posited for quality living than those produced carelessly.

Ande said that mosquitoes had proved over the years that they are our friends and allies, adding that if we like them or not, they would exist and continue to source blood from humans.

The professor called for improvement in Zoology curriculum to ensure better focus on organisms that feature prominently around man.

He said that zoologists were expected to be the foster parents of animals in the Zoo, adding that they should be familiar with their needs and their health status.

I believe this is not all she said Op.
She must have mentioned ways to kill the protozoa in the belies of mosquitoes and make them unable to transit the malarial parasite.

First Aid for Seizures
If you see someone having a seizure, take the following steps:
• Time how long it lasts.
• Clear the area of anything hard or sharp.
• Loosen anything at the neck that may affect her breathing.
• Turn her onto her side.
• Put something soft beneath her head.
• Don't place anything inside the mouth.
Call 911 or Doctor if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, happens again or the person is pregnant, injured, or has diabetes.

SYMPTOMS OF EPILEPSY
The main symptoms of epilepsy are repeated seizures.
Because epilepsy is caused by abnormal activity in brain cells, seizures can affect any process your brain coordinates. There are some symptoms which may indicate a person has epilepsy. If one or more of these symptoms are present, a medical examination is advised, especially if they recur:
• A convulsion with no temperature (no fever).
• Short spells of blackout, or confused memory.
• Intermittent fainting spells, during which bowel or bladder control is lost. This is frequently followed by extreme tiredness.
• For a short period the patient is unresponsive to instructions or questions.
• The patient becomes stiff, suddenly, for no obvious reason
• The patient suddenly falls for no clear reason. The patient may roll after falling.
• Sudden bouts of blinking without apparent stimuli.
• Sudden bouts of chewing, without any apparent reason.
• For a short time the person seems dazed, and unable to communicate.
• Repetitive movements that seem inappropriate.
• The person becomes fearful for no apparent reason, he/she may even panic or become angry.
• Peculiar changes in senses, such as smell, touch and sound.
• The arms, legs, or body jerk, in babies these will appear as cluster of rapid jerking movements.

Symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar from episode to episode.

Epilepsy is a medical condition of the brain that produces seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. It is also called a seizure disorder. Epilepsy can cause convulsions (sudden, uncontrolled movements). But seizures can trigger a wide range of other symptoms, from staring to falling to fumbling with clothes. When a person has two or more seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy. Older words for seizures include Convulsion and fits.

Health / How To Grow Old Gently, Healthy And Happily; Six (6) HINTS!!! by malakus(m): 5:58am On Jun 03, 2017
According to Dr. David Wikenheiser, a Canadian naturopath who carries out biological age tests: “Aging is when we have loss of energy, eye-sight and mental ability. This used to start happening to people in their 50s and 60s, but now, I am seeing patient who have these problems in their 30s and 40s.” He then gives these hints on how to grow old gently. Eat the right thing: Do eat five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetable a day. High fibre food move more quickly through the body than processed foods; helping you maintain a healthy gut and fight cancer and heart disease.

Eat the right thing: Do eat five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetable a day. High fibre food move more quickly through the body than processed foods; helping you maintain a healthy gut and fight cancer and heart disease.
Do avoid most non-organic food: It contains pesticides that could slowly poison your body. Eat unrefined food such as whole meal bread, it contains valuable nutrients and fibre. Don’t eat fried food; it creates free radicals that damage your DNA, leaving you more vulnerable to cancer.
Don’t skip meals. Research has found a link between Alzheimer and depriving the brain of sugar.

Exercise regularly: Walk briskly for 30 to 60 minutes at least four days a week. Exercise makes you look younger by making your muscles stronger and firming your body. And the health benefits are dramatic. If you exercise moderately every day and one day you put yourself under a lot of physicality strain, like moving heavy furniture, your risk of heart attack is twice what it would be normally. If you do not exercise, that risk rockets by hundredfold! And women who exercise live longer than those who don’t.

Keep an eye on your stress level: A certain amount of stress can help to keep us young, as a body under stress is stimulated to repair its If more efficiently, thus reducing age-related damage. Studies from around the world show that most people who live to more than 100 had hardworking lives with many crises. But, although stress can be positive, very high levels can lead to heart disease and mental health problems.
To keep stress levels reasonable: Set boundaries of what you can do and can’t achieve. Don’t over-stretch yourself. Go for regular massages, learn meditation techniques. Have a laugh to relax the mind; try the herbal supplements: Malissa or Valerian for calmness and better sleep.
Experiment with aromatherapy; Camomile and lavender are very soothing.

Drink lots of water: Drinking a litre of water in the morning and another one in the afternoon works on your kidney and helps to detoxify the body. According to Dr. Wikenbeiser, “ there are 30,000 known chemicals used all over the world. We are taking these in all the time through our skin and by eating food contaminated with pesticides. No one knows what these chemicals are doing to our bodies so the more we can do to flush them out, the better.

Have more sex: People who have sex at least three times a week look more than 10 years younger than the average adult who makes love twice a week. Sex triggers chemicals that delay aging. And loving couples also make more of an effort to keep themselves in good shape for their partners, which has a knock-on effect on their health.
