Mark Regev, senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a former Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom, told NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell that Hamas was violating the laws of war by operating from hospitals and that Israel had a right to target the militants.

But Regev said that Israel still would “make a maximum effort to differentiate between the Hamas terrorists who are our target and innocent civilians who we don’t want to see get caught up in crossfire.”

In a rare joint statement, heads of 18 UN organisations decry the escalating toll on lives, with over 85 UN relief workers among the casualties, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

At least 88 UN relief workers have been killed so far in the deadly Israel-Palestine conflict, United Nations' agency chiefs said, calling for a ceasefire.

"For almost a month, the world has been watching the unfolding situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory in shock and horror at the spiralling numbers of lives lost and torn apart," the heads of 18 UN organisations said in a rare joint statement late Sunday.

"Scores of aid workers have been killed since October 7 including 88 UNRWA colleagues - the highest number of United Nations fatalities ever recorded in a single conflict," they said, referring to the UN relief and works agency for Palestinian refugees.

The UNRWA currently employs some 13,000 staff in Palestine's Gaza, a besieged territory that is home to 2.4 million people.

According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, 10,022 people have died including more than 4,000 children in the besieged Gaza since Israel launched its strikes.

'Humanitarian ceasefire more urgent with every passing hour'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also urged an immediate ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as he warned that the bombarded Gaza was becoming a "graveyard for children."

"The unfolding catastrophe makes the need for a humanitarian ceasefire more urgent with every passing hour," he told reporters at the UN headquarters.

"The parties to the conflict - and, indeed, the international community - face an immediate and fundamental responsibility: to stop this inhuman collective suffering and dramatically expand humanitarian aid to Gaza," he said.

"The nightmare in Gaza is more than a humanitarian crisis. It is a crisis of humanity."

'Clear violations of international humanitarian law'

"Without fuel, newborn babies in incubators and patients on life support will die," Guterres said.

"The way forward is clear. A humanitarian ceasefire - now. All parties respecting all their obligations under international humanitarian law," he said.

Guterres again voiced alarm about the "clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing."

Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres continued to call for an immediate ceasefire as the death toll among Palestinian civilians in Gaza has exceeded 10,000.

Reiterating a phrase used by UNICEF spokesman James Elder on October 31, Guterres told reporters in the UN headquarters in New York that Gaza has become a “graveyard for children”.

Over 4,800 Palestinian children have been killed since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza a month ago, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

“Hundreds of girls and boys are reportedly being killed and injured every day,” Guterres said.

“More journalists have reportedly been killed over a four-week period than in any conflict in at least three decades.

“More United Nations aid workers have been killed than in any comparable period in the history of our organization.

“The unfolding catastrophe makes the need for a humanitarian ceasefire more urgent with every passing hour.

Death Toll

Israel has, thus far, killed over 10,022 Palestinians in Gaza, including 4,800 children and 2,550 women, and wounded more than 25,000. Palestinian Ministry of Health reports and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

Despite a massive Israeli military buildup around the Gaza borders and sporadic infiltrations on the outskirts of the besieged Strip, Palestinian Resistance continues to repel Israeli attacks.

To justify its military failure, the Israeli army continues to pound civilian homes throughout the Gaza Strip with new massacres reported everywhere in the besieged enclave.

Gaza has been under a tight Israeli military siege since 2007, following a democratic election in occupied Palestine, the results of which were rejected by Tel Aviv and Washington.

An Israeli group, calling itself, “Doctors for the rights of IDF soldiers” has called to destroy “any place where (Hamas) people are hiding (…) even if it is a hospital.”
The Palestine Global Mental Health Network (PGMHN) called on all professional, medical and health related associations and personnel to strongly condemn the statement published by an Israeli medical group calling for the destruction of Palestinian hospitals in Gaza.

An Israeli group, calling itself, “Doctors for the rights of IDF soldiers” has called to destroy “any place where (Hamas) people are hiding (…) even if it is a hospital.”

PGMHN also called on all health organizations and “upon all free people” around the world to “condemn this barbaric call for killing and destruction by those who have made the Hippocratic oath to do no harm.”

“Those blood thirsty doctors should be expelled from the profession and they should be treated as criminals,” the statement read.

The statement by Israeli doctors, which circulated widely on social media, said that the “murderous terrorist organization (referring to Hamas) is using all means and is committing vicious murders and unprecedented horrors against people, women, and children, therefore, any place where its people are hiding, or is being used for terrorist operations is a legitimate target for destruction – even if it is a hospital.”

It added,

“At their disposal there are ambulances that are transferring patients to the south to receive medical treatment elsewhere. No more!

“The residents of Gaza, who saw it right to turn the hospitals into terrorist cells in an attempt to exploit the Western standard, are the ones who brought upon their own destruction – terrorism must be eradicated everywhere and in any way.”

Israel has already bombed many Palestinian hospitals, clinics or their vicinities in Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians.

The most notorious of these bombings was on October 17, when Israel bombed Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, killing nearly 500 and wounding hundreds more.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has said that scores of doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, along with other medical staff have been killed in Israeli strikes since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza a month ago.

Also, scores of civil defense workers have been killed while trying to recover bodies of Palestinians from underneath the rubble of homes, schools and hospitals.

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees says "at least one strike hit the school yard where there were tents for displaced families" and "another strike hit inside the school where women were baking bread."

The Health Ministry in the blockaded Gaza has said at least 15 people were killed when a UN school sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinians was hit by an Israeli strike.

"The massacre at the Al Fakhura school committed by the occupation (Israel) this morning left 15 martyrs and 70 wounded," ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qudra told a press conference on Saturday.

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees said its school is being used as a "shelter for displaced families".

"At least one strike hit the school yard where there were tents for displaced families. Another strike hit inside the school where women were baking bread," UNRWA said in a statement.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military about hitting the school in Jabalia refugee camp.

Around 1.4 million people displaced

On Thursday, UNRWA said four of its schools in Gaza housing people displaced by the war had been damaged by Israeli bombings.

An estimated 1.4 million people have been displaced in four weeks of war, out of the territory's 2.4 million residents, with many crammed into schools or hospitals.

The Health Ministry said on Saturday at least 9,488 people have been killed across Gaza, the majority civilians, since Israel started pounding the territory on October 7.

The conflict began when Hamas initiated Operation Al Aqsa Flood against Israel, a surprise attack including a barrage of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air, which Hamas said was in retaliation for the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and Israeli settlers’ growing violence against Palestinians.

Since then, the Israeli military has relentlessly bombarded Gaza and cut water and electricity supplies, further worsening the living conditions in an area that has reeled under a crippling siege since 2007.
