A former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Dr. Emeka Anyaoku, says that the treatment meted to a Nigerian diplomat in Jakarta, Indonesia, recently, indicated the level of ignominy with which the rest of the world holds Nigeria. He lamented that Nigeria is not only “fast drifting away from the dreams of the founding fathers,” it has also degenerated into “international irrelevance.” He also noted that the country had slid into the ranks of poverty-stricken nations. Anyaoku spoke at the 10th edition of Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance in Awka on Thursday. “Developments in this country are pushing Nigeria to the brink of national disaster,” he said; adding, that the level of deterioration had robbed Nigeria of respect, while citizens lack sense of belonging. He condemned the recent assault on a Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia, noting that the issue was an evidence of “the ignominy with which the rest of the world holds Nigeria.” The event was held to honour Anyaoku. https://punchng.com/nigeria-has-degenerated-into-international-irrelevance-anyaoku/ Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Dr. Emeka Anyaoku

Says IBB, misunderstood by many people *He’s generous to a fault, never betrays friendship – Akilu *Former Military President absent, attends virtually Former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, yesterday, said that the clamour for self-determination and secession in different parts of Nigeria was not a good omen given the network of relationships binding the various ethnic groups in the country. Abubakar stated this at the IBB Legacy Dialogue, a special event organised to commemorate the 80th birthday anniversary of former Military Head of State, President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in Abuja. The event, which was organised by the Ibrahim & Mariam Babangida Presidential Library and Museum, held under the theme: ‘IBB, the Man, His Vision, His Legacy’, attracted a crowd of dignitaries and eminent personalities from across the country. Abubakar observed that breaking up Nigeria into different countries would even be difficult to achieve and counselled that rather than separation, all well-meaning Nigerians should join hands together to build a more united and stronger nation. According to him, a better management of the nation’s diversity would resolve most of the current agitations and other challenges facing the country. “All that I will say is that we should strengthen our diversity. Let us try to see how we can sink our differences and continue to live together in peace. Even if you say you want to break Nigeria, how are you going to do it? Everybody, every Nigerian is connected one way or the other. Everywhere you go in the village you’ll find a Hausa man, a Yoruba man, an Igbo man, Itsekiri man and so on and so forth. So when you say you want to divide, where do you draw the line with the intermarriages and so on and so forth? It’s going to be a difficult task,” he said. The former military leader acknowledged that Nigeria was passing through a difficult period in terms of insecurity but expressed optimism that the challenge could be surmounted if Nigerians worked collectively on the issue. “All I will say is that we have insecurity and all hands should be put on deck to address it. All these culprits, the Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers and whatever name they are called, are living among us and definitely, they are known. So let us report them to the authorities and let us put our hands together to tackle the security challenges,” he said. In his tribute to the octogenarian, Abubakar described Babangida as one of the most misunderstood leaders Nigeria has ever produced in its history. “I said so because a lot of things are put in his mouth and whatever he says is twisted to suit whosoever is passing on the message “Right from childhood, Ibrahim had shown qualities of leadership because right from elementary school he was made a monitor in the class and in our last year in secondary school, he was made a head boy. After secondary school education, he joined the military and as an officer and a gentleman, leadership is about caring and about managing resources, people and personnel under you. He exhibited these leadership qualities even before he became an officer,” he said. Business mogul and publisher of Champion Newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu described Babangida as a detribalised leader who embraced all Nigerians and did not discriminate against anyone based on his or her ethnicity, religion or political affiliation. Iwuanyanwu disclosed that it was that broad minded disposition that made IBB hunt and recruit seasoned professionals with whom he worked during his tenure. He said that though Babangida has been vilified for some of the policies, programmes and actions taken during his regime, he remains, by and large, one of the most successful leaders Nigeria has ever produced. On the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Iwuanyanwu said that it could not have been the personal decision of Babangida even though the buck stopped at his table at that time. “There is no way one man would take such a decision alone. If it was a personal decision of IBB, then the other members of his cabinet at that time would have resigned their appointments and positions,” he said. Also speaking on the misconceptions about Babangida, a former President of the Senate, David Mark said the ex-military ruler has a lot of admirers just as he has so many detractors. Mark, who was Military Governor of Niger State and Minister of Communications during the Babangida regime, said that one thing that was established at the event was that Babangida had a human heart, feelings, a personal touch that he brought into governance. “The way he sympathises with people is unique and truly, it is very, very unique.” Former head of the Department of Military Intelligence (DMI), Brig Gen. Halilu Akilu, described Babangida as a gifted person who is kind to a fault. According to him, Babangida is a reliable personality who is loyal to his friends and will never betray them. Akilu debunked the insinuations in many quarters about Babangida and one of his late friends, Major Gen Mamman Vatsa who was implicated in a military coup and executed under Babangida’s watch. Akilu argued that it was wrong to regard that incident as a betrayal of a friend, stressing that Vatsa underwent a normal trial process under military law and was found guilty; hence he had to face the consequences of his actions. The event, which was streamed live on national television and various social media platforms, also featured a virtual session during which other past leaders of Nigeria including General Yakubu Gowon, Goodluck Jonathan and Ernest Shonekan paid glowing tributes to the celebrant and extolled his virtues. Although Babangida was not physically present at the event, he made a surprise virtual appearance during the session to acknowledge the tributes and goodwill messages. He expressed appreciation to the organisers of the event and prayed for every one of them and the country. https://www.newtelegraphng.com/secession-why-nigeria-must-not-disintegrate-gen-abubakar/ |

We want the whole world to see the level of injustice, oppression and intimidation currently going on in Nigeria. The time is now.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/akintoye-turaki-others-leads-ninas-1m-march-to-un-general-assembly/amp/

In a short video published by Channels TV on Facebook, one of the protesters said an average Imo person is into business, noting that the IPOB's order will affect people's means of survival. He described Imo as the economic hub of Eastern Nigeria, saying abiding by the IPOB's sit-at-home order will lead to "economic backwardness" in the state. The protester said: "The state will lose revenue, individuals will lose income and they will lose profits." He added that IPOB should not use its agitation to inflict economic hardship on the people. According to him, Governor Hope Uzodimma has called on the residents of the state to ignore the sit-at-home order and go about their daily business activities. He added that youths from all the local government areas in the state joined the protest, noting that the turnout showed the sit-at-home order was not effective on Tuesday. The proscribed IPOB group had declared sit-at-home order every Monday to protest the arrest and detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigerian government. https://www.facebook.com/channelsforum/videos/514848282940801/ |
A former envoy to Malaysia and elder statesman, Amb. Yerima Abdullahi, has urged proponents of Biafra to seek for plebiscite as away out. Abdullahi, who is also a close associate of the president, said it was better than eroding the peace and progress of the country, adding that fighting a second phase of civil war is unthinkable. He made this disclosure in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe, stressing that leaders should embrace alternative means of resolving the debacle. According to him, “It is not surprising if wars are fought but when wars are fought, eventually someone will lose. However, you become more civilized based on the experiences of the war, so the need to come together and eventually sort out yourselves. Accept that you were defeated in this war, but you will not fold your arms by accepting the defeat. “As an intelligent human being, God has given us high degree of intelligence, we are supposed to use it. For someone to say, you want to leave a country for instance in 2022 on issues debated in 1960’s. It is out of place and unfortunate this is what a lot of us do by bringing issues that transpired years back only to make them relevant, otherwise, what is the use of breaking a country now with Kanu, bringing up the issue of Biafra. “This was an issue that we fought during the civil war and many of us died, some survived. Some of our leaders are still very intelligent and observant people, most of them claimed we can’t afford to fight again, which I believe in, but if there are people who still feels strongly that they want their own country by whatever name they call it. Whether they call it Biafra, the most sensible thing to do is to give them an opportunity to vote. They should hold a plebiscite, if they want for goodness sake let them go.” Abdullahi lamented the negative impact on the average Igbo business man scattered across different part of the country, saying that they should weigh the implications. “If Kanu and his group wants to get out of Nigeria, well for goodness sake let carve it out but they know the implications of being out of Nigeria. The leaders that are leading them should know the implications. They should know that the Igbo man who is very prosperous in Gaboro in the Eastern part of Borno state, in Ilela, Kawoje in Kebbi state. “There are Igbos all over the country and they are not among the poor ones. So for goodness sake give them the opportunity. Let them go atleast we will experience some peace, what we don’t like is dwindling or eroding the peaceful environment. Unfortunately, they have not asked for plebiscite but insist on being given, I don’t know how you will split a country on a platter of gold. However, it is better to allow them go than to say we fight another civil war,” he added. https://punchng.com/hold-plebiscite-on-biafra-ex-envoy-counsels/? |

The Untold Story: Nnamdi Kanu and S/E Govs Meeting in Enugu | #IgbereTV By: Chief Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko A lot of people believe we all need to remember what happened exactly four years ago. Four years ago, I was approached by the South East Governors Forum to arrange a meeting between Nnamdi and the South East Governors. I pleaded with them to grant me the concession to involve an Igbo elder, they agreed. I invited Prof Ben Nwabueze and he accepted to lead us to the meeting. At the meeting, Nnamdi agreed that his demands for secession and election boycott were not absolute, in other words, that he and his group were amenable to negotiations, as the dialogue progressed. In my sitting room before the meeting, Nnamdi and I had agreed that presenting the need for a wholesome reconstruction of the polity, a constitutional conference where Nigerians would sit down to agree on the way forward, a get-together that will draft the people’s agreement, probably anchored on power devolution, true federalism and resource control via a new constitution, affirmed at a referendum, should be the group’s position. A constitution that would give every section, a sense of belonging. Nnamdi INSISTED on the 1963 constitution model He was reluctant to quiten all agitation for 24 months. He was willing to concede between 6 and 12 months, of peace and quiet, to allow the FG time to address the demand. This position was presented to the meeting. The South East Governors agreed to take his demands to Abuja and get back at the next meeting, where Nnamdi will conclude the negotiations with his group. In my car on our way home, I asked Nnamdi how he hoped to convince his group to flow with the national reconstruction agenda, just in case Abuja looks at it favourably. Nnamdi assured me that he had it all figured out. He believed he had to play the statesman for the sake of posterity. The South East Governors demanded Nnamdi attended the follow-up meeting in a fortnight, with his group’s leadership. On the eve of the proposed second meeting, Nnamdi’s residence was invaded. Four years later, the FG is upbeat the agitation will soon be crushed because Nnamdi is in their custody once again. Nnamdi’s followers, driven by emotion and anger, believe they will cripple the country and have their way. Well, the truth may be a little different from the two extreme positions. Three months ago, circumstances forced me out of my self-imposed silence, to make certain interventions through my 155-point, 20 series social media post titled MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. Disturbed by the possibility of a military invasion of the South East, that will not only destroy lives and infrastructure, but also injure the economic life of the region, I made public, certain truth that could stay the hand of the authorities, thereby avoiding a blood bath and massive destruction of the land. Once again, I am forced to present these “unattractive” deep truths. 1 It is not true that Nnamdi’s detention has or will bring the agitation to an end. The agitation has never been about an individual. It has rather, always been about the suffocating unitary structure, the refusal to enthrone equity, fairplay, and a level playing field for all. It is about the impunity, nepotism and poor governance, enabled by the military’s decree 24 of 1999, a.k.a. the 1999 constitution. It has been about the lack of interest and loss of faith in the structure, format and style of governance in the country. A system that not only encourages massive corruption, but also makes it impossible for the established agencies to bring corrupt leaders to book. A system that rapidly grows unemployment, hamstrings State Governments and overloads the central government with duties it is unable to perform. A system that has failed all round, but is only sustained stubbornly and to the pleasure of certain folks, who believe that restructuring Nigeria may cost them their preeminent and dominant position in the country. 2 The deliberately woven false narrative that if Nnamdi is caged, then the agitation will die, is actually unpatriotic and unhelpful. The agitation is fuelled by the fear of eternal subjugation. Millions of young folks of my region are not willing to see their children go through the humiliation they experience in unitary Nigeria. Where they have been reduced to permanent onlookers and spectators in a country Azikiwe and co laboured and fought to build. The smart deception that the agitation is all about Nnamdi, is actually designed and cleverly sustained by people who do not want the truth addressed and the issues resolved. 3 The agitation which began 22 years ago, has grown greatly and would have overrun the region, had the agitators the good mind and needed skills to win over the elite of the region. Nevertheless, their near-total support and sympathy from the masses of the region and very huge diaspora presence, makes it unintelligent to write off the agitation. The masses are woke, intimidation has not worked, and earlier applied lethal force only deepened their anger. 4 The Governors of the region must show leadership now and engage Nnamdi immediately. They should visit, engage and sound out Nnamdi even in the DSS custody, to work out an amicable and peaceful roadmap to closure and harmony. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RESOLVE THE CRISIS WITHOUT NNAMDI. Those who think otherwise are naive or unfamiliar with the structure of the agitators and their modus operandi. The earlier the South East Governors visit Nnamdi in the DSS facility and begin talks with him, the better for the land. There’s no other way. 5 The importance of avoiding violent approach, cannot be over emphasized. The issues that inspired the agitation, must be addressed. The unhelpful and unhealthy structure of the country must be reconstructed. The nepotism, impunity, especially the brigandage of the murderous Fulani herdsmen, must become issues of the past. And, demonising the agitators must be stopped. It is wrong to consistently attack and demonize much abused youngsters, whose only sin, is that they can no longer swallow the wicked humiliation meted on them by their fellow countrymen, just because their parents lost a war in 1970. That you don’t agree with their style, does not make their cries for justice invalid. 6 Finally, its not true that you can cure your malaria by addressing the symptoms only. You solve your sickness by treating the root cause of the disease. A: You run tests, identify the malaria parasites and address them with anti malaria drugs. B: You cover your bed with treated mosquitoe net, and sleep in them. C: You clear and clean your drainage, get rid of stagnant water in your gutter, and disinfect your compound. Your malaria symptoms will only disappear once addressed from the root. We will never get it right by obstinately ignoring the root cause, while gleefully attacking the symptoms. The desire to crush the agitation forcefully is wrong and will backfire. The agitators should be engaged without delay. Clerics and credible elders should be used. Time is of essence. TO BE CONTINUED. Written by: Chief Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko Founder/President Igbo Youths Movement. https://igberetvnews.com/1397301/untold-story-nnamdi-kanu-s-e-govs-meeting-enugu/ |

Gunmen on Thursday night attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters in the Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State. The attack claimed the lives of four persons which included a police Inspector and three of the attackers. While parts of the police Division were burnt, cars parked on the premises were not spared. The PUNCH gathered that the attackers and the policemen on duty engaged in a gun battle for some time. The police spokesperson for the state police command, Mike Abattam, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, disclosed that the incident took place around 11.35 pm on Thursday. He informed that some of the surviving bandits escaped with bullet wounds. Abattam said, “On August 5, about 21:35 hours, armed bandits, in their numbers attacked and threw explosives and petrol bombs on top of the roof of Orsu Police station damaging the roof and causing fire outbreak in the station which spread and affected some of the vehicles parked at the parking lot. The command’s tactical teams on the ground engaged the bandits in a gun duel. “And due to the superior firepower of the police the bandits were subdued. Three of the bandits were neutralized and their guns, one pump action gun, and two locally-made double barrel pistols were recovered while others escaped into the bush with bullet wounds. Unfortunately, a police inspector lost his life in the attack. “Meanwhile the command is using this medium to call on the good people of Imo State especially, the Orsu community to assist the police with credible information that will lead to the arrest of the escaped bandits and to report to the nearest police station any person seen with or treating bullet wounds. Also, hospitals are advised to ensure that they report any person who comes to them for treatment of bullet wounds.” Details later… https://punchng.com/breaking-four-dead-as-gunmen-attack-imo-police-station/

CNG said this was necessary to save the Northern economy which the group claimed the PIB was designed to destroy The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has asked northern members of the Senate and the House of Representatives to halt the process of passing the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB). CNG said this was necessary to save the Northern economy which the group claimed the PIB was designed to destroy. The group said the PIB would have a devastating effect on the economy of the North because its people would be compelled to buy fuel at “disabling inflated prices.” The statement was made by the group's spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman. Suleiman said, “The CNG, having been convinced that the Bill, if passed and implemented would be the final nail that will permanently seal the fate of the North economically and socially, hereby resolves to: "Categorically declare the continuation of the process that may lead to the passage of the PIB as another clandestine move to further weaken the northern economy and therefore unacceptable. “Demand the immediate halt of the process for the PIB in its present construction as it would invariably impact negatively on the livelihood of northern communities especially those of the far northeast and northwest who would be forced to buy fuel at a disabling inflated price.” Also according to the group, lawmakers of northern extraction in the National Assembly will be held accountable should the region face any hardship as a direct implication of the passage of the bill. It said, “Warn all Northern representatives in the National Assembly that they will be held responsible for the mass sufferings that the PIB will force on northerners if they allow it to pass. “To demand a comprehensive investigation into the alleged underhanded deals between the private operator of the refinery in Lagos and some members of the National Assembly to influence the success of the Bill which would hand the total monopoly of production, transportation, marketing and more dangerously, pricing of petroleum products. “To invite the attention of all segments of northern leadership and the credible section of northern elders and all civil society organisations in the North to rise to defend the people of the region by rejecting the PIB. “Declare that the CNG will not hesitate to go to any length to challenge the passage of the Bill including taking legal action.” Meanwhile, the bill has been largely condemned by Southerners, who feel short-changed by its provisions for the region despite being the oil-rich area and the part ravaged by the attendant environmental challenges. For instance, Southern Governors and Niger Delta groups have condemned the bill as the Senate gave host communities only three percent equity holding in Host Communities Trust Fund as against the 10 percent demanded by the people of the oil-rich areas. The House of Representatives, on its part, passed the bill, granting host communities five percent equity stake in the Host Communities Trust Fund, as against the demand for 10 per cent by host communities. Another controversial area passed was the fund exploration of frontier basins, which the Senate left at 30 percent, while stakeholders in the Niger Delta had demanded that it should be reduced to 10 percent. Governors of the southern states of Nigeria have rejected that 30 per cent of the profit from oil revenue by the proposed Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) should be dedicated to oil exploration efforts in the oil basins, and other major sections of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB). The NNPC has oil exploration activities in the Chad basin in Borno state, Niger, Sokoto, Benue Trough and other inland basins in Nigeria, which means the 30 percent will benefit the North. http://saharareporters.com/2021/08/03/petroleum-industry-bill-will-weaken-north-stop-it%E2%80%94-group-tells-northern-national-assembly |
The Independent Corrupt Practices And other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has raided the offices of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over N10billion fraud perpetrated under the supervision of Nigeria’s Information Minister Mr Lai Mohammed and suspended Director-General of the commission, Mr Ishaq Modibbo Kawu. Sources to Pointblanknews.com revealed that a N10 Billion loan released to the commission since December last year was diverted to a private account and has so far yielded interests estimated in excess of One Billion Nara already. According to the source, following a tip off, the ICPC early last week raided the commission’s headquarters in Abuja and impounded several files, computers and gadgets belonging to the commission. Lai Mohammed since assumption of office as a minister in Mohammed Buhari’s government has allegedely been enmeshed in a series of financial scams including the recent has jeopardized the Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) Project that has been operating in fits and starts since 2016. Pointblanknews.com reported that the Minister in 2015 admitted extorting N13.5 Million from the NBC to embark on a foreign trip. Investigation by our correspondent revealed that N10 Billion was a loan provided to help offset debts owed to contractors who have been building infrastructure to enable the DSO project commence in the earnest. The DSO is the process of upgrading the present analogue television broadcast systems to digital terrestrial television (DTT). The project is founded on an international protocol signed by Nigeria among several countries in the Group A batch of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva in 2006. The protocol gave a deadline of July, 2015 to fully switch over from analogue to digital. Almost all countries of the world have since eradicated analogue television broadcast and transited to the digital platform leaving Nigeria. Nigeria first started the process in 2008 but made no progress. In 2016 the Nigerian Government faced with the vulnerabilities of solely operating an obsolete technology relaunched the program with fanfare in Jos Plateau State, but it was quickly marred with scandals of fraud and embezzlement of funds involving the Minister Mr Mohammed and the then DG NBC DG Mr Ishaq Modibbo Kawu Mr Kawu was suspended from office and he’s still facing criminal charges at the Federal Court in Abuja, Capital of Nigeria while Mr Mohammed who approved the scam still seats pretty in office. The project again stalled and contractors who had worked on the project since commencement with belief that payment will be made timely to enable then service bank obligations and sustain the tempo of the project were unable to continue following the reported fraud which led to the Nigerian government halting further action on the project to investigate the scams. But the NBC it was gathered raised alarm on the likely difficulties to be faced by Nigeria if the project continues to stalemate. These included local television stations not been able to access spare parts any longer for their equipment. Given the urgency, Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari approved the sum of N10 Billion Naira as loan to the NBC with a total of N9.4 billion to be used as payment to contractors and N600 Million as recurrent fund for the NBC to prosecute project. But the contractors never got the money even though it was fully released in the first week of January until two weeks ago when they began to receive payments in trickles. In fact, the money never even got to the NBC Accounts- even now! Rather Mr Mohammed was said to have allegedly entered into some dubious arrangement with officials of the hierarchy of the finance ministry to divert the money to an interest yielding account for an initial 90 days which was again rolled over in the month of March for a second time until the contractors became restive. Even the decision to hurriedly liquidate the money from fixed deposit and pay the contractors it was gathered as a result of a tip off to the Minister that the contractors may have contacted the anti-graft agencies. Indeed one of the companies was said to have alerted the ICPC and EFCC to complain that the NBC was fraudulently withholding the money. But the ICPC which swung into action immediately after receiving the complaint was said to have discovered during its preliminary investigation that the money never got to the NBC. Beside, even the N600million approved for the commission to run the project has been coveted by Mr Mohammed and diverted to the ministry where he contrived a scheme to personally and directly control the funds. He quickly set up a ministerial task force on DSO – ploy that not only effectively usurped the role of the NBC and Digiteam a body of experts already put in place by Nigeria’s federal government to liaise with the NBC with an ultimatum to deliver the DSO Project latest be June 2022, but also ensured the money was not subject to audit and official control of the ministry. Taking no chances Mr Mohammed appointed himself the Chairman of the task force and unilaterally assumed the power of disbursing the N9.4 Billion and also appropriating the N600 Million which was clearly marked for the NBC. Among the five contractors listed for payment are Messrs Inview to collect N908,000,000, Messrs Intergrated Television services (ITS) to collect N3,773,046,000;…Messrs Pinnacle Communications 1,936,572,305 Messrs SES 2,148,762,245 and Messrs Outsource with about N800,000,00. Mr Mohammed is known to have an undue interest in Inview managed by one Toyin Zubairu said to be his business patner. The said Zubairu was the CEO of the Defunct HITV, a company Mr Mohammed was implicated in as Legal Adviser before it was mismanaged to liquidation by Zubairu. Mr Mohammed has scheduled Zubairu’s Inview for a payment of N908 Million in the N9.4billion just removed from the private interest yielding account. Reliable industry sources informed Pointblanknews.com that the N908M payment is a fraud as Messrs Inview had already been paid N1.2 Billion for the same services in 2015. Beside, Mr Mohammed was alleged to have used his power as the minister to intimidate the NBC into paying N350 Million to Mr Zubairu as Digital Access Fee for accessing a platform which the commission paid Zubairu to build for it. “It’s like I pay a contractor to build a house for me. Then when I moved into the house a bully comes and began forcing me to start paying rent to the contractor for occupying my own house- even after I have fully paid him for his work as contractor” a distraught service provider in the DSO project lamented to Pointblanknews on Monday after the ICPC raid. Beside the ICPC, it is reliably learnt that Mr Mohammed had always used the NBC as a personal cash cow and had been crafty enough using his political influence to make DGs of the NBC fall guys whenever the scams were busted. First was the Emeka Mbah, DG between 2013 to 2016 before he was arrested and detained by the EFCC for an alleged N15 Billion Fraud. He was alleged to have kept the said N15 Billion in Zenith Bank to generate interest rather than follow the rule of the Treasury Single Account Policy of the government. Mr Mbah was able to prove to the EFCC that he did nothing without the highest approval. He produced evidences of minutes of meeting with Mr Mohammed presiding where it was agreed to lodge the money in Zenith Bank allegedly as guarantee to contractors engaged by the commission to produce Set-top Boxes to be used for the DSO Program. He produced the Minister’s approvals . Curiously the EFCC spared Mr Mohammed who approved the dubious lodgement and Mr Mbah was hauled before a federal court in Abuja to face charges bothering on corruption! The scandal led to his sack by the President Buhari who immediately appointed Mr Kawu on the recommendation of Mr Mohammed. Mr Kawu and Mohammed are both from Kwara State in North Central Nigeria. But just two years into his tenure Mr Kawu’s quickly came to grief when another scandal of N2.5 Billion involving Mr Mohammed erupted. A private company Pinnacle Communications was surreptitiously awarded N2.5 Billion on the approval of Mr Mohammed for no work done whatsoever. It was called “seed money” to enable the company prepare to provide digital telecommunication services to the DSO project. Mr Mohammed who at the time was a graduate of 40 years and a lawyer with 30 years’ experience quickly claimed he was deceived by Mr Kawu into signing the approval for the whooping N2.5 Billion. He claimed he really knew nothing about the scam and only relied on the recommendations of Mr Kawu. But Mr Kawu and Mr Lucky Omoluwa, CEO of Pinnacle hotly disputed Mr Mohammed’s claim of ignorance. They presented proof that there was series of meetings between the NBC, Pinnacle Communications and Mr Mohammed who presided at all the meetings. Beside he went on foreign trips sponsored by the contractors and still collected official allowances and estacodes for the same trips. Infact, Mr Kawu was said to have been convinced that the decision to originate the memo followed a verbal directive from Mr Mohammed who wasted no time in rushing to approve the money without raising any questions. Sources at the commission reveal that N150 Million of the money paid to Pinnacle was traced to the personal account of Jimi Mohammed, son of the Minister now a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly. But despite the overwhelming evidence of his culpability, like what happened in the previous case, Mr Mohammed is confident that his political weight and connections as a major player in the ruling party will again save him. Lai Mohammed this time became arrogant and was reported to have thoroughly harassed the investigators from the ICPC and several times either dictated the scope and mode of interrogation or even refused to be interrogated all together. Expectedly the ICPC arraigned only Mr Kawu and even recommended his suspension from office. Mr Mohammed a co-suspect in the scam was not only excluded but was actually reported to have desperately worked to secure presidential approval on the ICPC recommendation to suspend his fellow suspect with dispatch. Observers are concerned that the President Buhari’s administration notoriously known for treating allegations of corruption from cronies with “deodorant” and those of opposition members with harsh “pesticides” may again weigh in and allow Mr Mohammed escape once more with the glaring cases of corruption that is presently raging. Mr Kawu a brilliant journalist, veteran broadcaster and respected ace columnist of several years standing is still embroiled in the criminal trials, desperate to establish his innocence while Mr Omoluwa, the Chairman of Pinnacle Communications a successful business man of several years wasn’t that lucky. He died in the course of the prosecution with his name tainted. Mr Mohammed has remained tenaciously on his seat to be engaged in several other financial scams confident that he’s a sacred cow in a so called anti-corruption government that has so far glossed over every reported case of corruption reported against its high ranking appointees. https://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/lai-mohammed-in-n10billion-fraud-as-icpc-swoops-on-nbc/ |
