WebmastersRe: Top 7 Things That Confuse New Nairalanders by mandy4s: 6:36pm On Jun 21, 2015
GeneralQuamdeen:
Let us bring ourselves back to when we are still a fresher in the citadel we study. We get confused about somethings, it is very fustrating at that moment but as times goes we understand how things work. The cool thing is that we have that kind of happy feeling to finally understand how things work and we feel good to see newbies struggling to know it.
That same thing happens to Nairaland new members too and the below listed are the top 7 things they find confusing.
1. How To Comment: This is one problem I faced when i registered to Nairaland. When freshers read an interesting topic mostly on front page, they find it difficult to comment. Why? Because the dont know how to comment. There is an interference with the knowledge they have on facebook. They expect to see a comment button and they get frustrated when they didnt find any. When all what they should do is click the reply button.
2. How to Create A New Topic: After when a new Nairalander successfully find a way to know how to comment. He feels good and happy but there will be a time when he will feel the need to create his own topic too. Most Nairaland members dont know how to do that. For those that have not figure it out yet. Visit the home page, click on the section suitable for the type of topic you want to create, scroll down a little bit you will see where create new topic is written in bracket. Click on it and you are good to go.
3. How Topics Make Front Page: New Nairalanders feels good to know how to create a new topic. They will notice one day that they are not getting much comments as they used to see in other threads, that is when they know that there topic will need to hit the front page to get that. There are some people called Moderators, and Supermods, they are also one of us, there job is to pick out a topic that can be of interest to other people too and put it on front page. They have other basis of selecting a topic too but that is known to them only, because attimes, you will see a quack thread that is not interesting as yours hit FP. Dont say any stupid thing when you are frustrated about it, coz Mods like Lalasticlala or Seun fit ban you
4. How To Chat: Trust me, Most New Nairaland think there is a platform for instant messaging on Nairaland. For where? You wont find the Message button you are looking for here; the only way you can have a private information or message with a Nairalander is through their E-mail. Click on the profile of the Nairalander you are following and follows you, stroll down, click on the send an Email to this member writtem in bracket. You are good to go. Note: You will need to check your Email for any replies (the one you registered with)
5. How To Use The Home Page Button: Most new nairalanders dont know how to use the homepage button but one way or the other they get to know it later. Let me try to explain it down here
i. Edit Profile: This allows you to edit your profile.
ii. SH: This means 'Shared With Me'. This notifies you of the posts shared by other members you are following.
iii. FT This means 'Followed Topics'. This notifies you of new posts in topics you are following. Note that you automatically follows the topics you created yourself.
iv. FB: This means 'Follow Boards'. This notifies you of new topics created in the board you are following. How to follow boards: In the homepage, click on any section you will like to follow, then click on follow board.
v. L&S: This means 'Likes and Shares'. This notifies you of the likes and shares you get on your post.
vi. MT: Meaning 'Mentions'. This notifies you of quotes or replies to your posts. It also notifies you when your username is mentioned my other members. It also notifies you when other members calls for your attention i.e CC
vii. FG: meaning 'Following'. This notifies you of new post made by members you are following.
viii. FS: Meaning 'Followers'. This notifies you of new members following you.
ix. Trending: This is where you can view topics gaining most comments or posts.
x. Recent: This is where you can see recents posts made by other nairalanders
xi. New This is where you can see New topics created by members in all sections.
6. How to Use other Buttons: New nairalanders find it difficult to use buttons like Quote, Report, Like and Share
Quote: This is used to reply a post made by other members in a thread
Report: This is used to report to the admin if any member made a post that violates the rules.
Like: This is used to like post made by other members.
Share: This is used to share posts made by members to members following you.
7. How To Know The Online Members: Dont look for this for too long, there is no notification to see the online members. You can only know when they make a post.
Feel free to add things yours

PoliticsWho Knows What The Niger-delta Militants Are Thinking? by mandy4s(op): 5:56pm On Apr 03, 2015
according to Reuters....

Nigeria's oil delta quiet as militants weigh options after Jonathan defeat
By Julia Payne

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (Reuters) - The militant leaders who once wrought havoc in the Niger Delta oil industry have suddenly gone quiet following the defeat of Nigeria's incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, in an election this week.

An amnesty deal with the militants brokered by Jonathan when he was vice president in 2009 ended their rebellion, offering them generous payouts that they still enjoy today.

But in the run-up to the election, several trumpeted threats to return to war should Jonathan lose the election.

He lost by a landslide to former military ruler and Muslim northerner Muhammadu Buhari, and called for peace amongst Nigerians as he conceded defeat.

Despite their earlier threats, the militants appear to be keeping their own counsel now.

"People are asking where are the militants?" Alagoa Morris, a delta environmental activist, told Reuters.

In the early 2000s, the militants' campaign of blowing up pipelines and kidnapping oil workers in the creeks and mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta pushed oil prices to record highs.

Morris echoed the thoughts of some delta residents in saying he did not want to see a reprisal of those days.

"They should let sleeping dogs lie. We need peace in the creeks."

MARBLE HALLS

Former rebel leader Kingsley Kuku, a militant turned advisor to Jonathan who was quoted in newspapers as saying his Ijaw ethnic group would go to war if the president was not re-elected, did not respond to requests for comment.

Nor did Tompolo, who has become a multimillionaire on government contracts to secure pipelines he used to attack.

Self-styled "Ex-General" Reuben Wilson, a normally garrulous former fighter, told Reuters he was "in no mood to talk".

Perhaps the prospect of going from luxury back to living in mosquito-infested swamps is a decision that requires some thought.

Many militants now sit comfortably now in big houses with swimming pools and have built up huge business empires that can probably outlast the amnesty's end.

During the election, Reuters visited the house of a militant called General Ogunboss which had marble floors and throne-like chairs.

"Considerations are different this time," said Edward Obi, head of an environmental group. "They are self-interested human beings, and there is nobody out there to protect them now".

Thousands of foot soldiers also stand to lose their meal tickets if the amnesty programme, which expires at the end of 2015, stopped. It provides a stipend for about 30,000 people while they study, its spokesman Daniel Alabrah said.

"If you stop the programme today it might create some kind of unrest," he said. "The expectation is that it will be extended by up to two years".

None of this addresses the underlying issue that led to the militant unrest in the first place - the delta's deep sense of injustice at producing the oil that funds Nigeria's government and pays for nearly everything the nation imports but receiving little back except environmental devastation.

Having a man from a humble a background in the delta helped placate that sense of injustice, but Nigeria continued to suffer oil theft and piracy on an industrial scale.

Unless Buhari addresses these grievances, militant violence could return.

"Where there is no true justice there will never be peace," said Louis Chukwu, a resident of the oil town of Port Harcourt, said after hearing of Buhari's win.

"We cannot continue being marginalized and cheated".
Ok So I ask, who knows what's on their mindshuh

PoliticsLet's Not Let Them Distort History For Us by mandy4s(op): 4:15pm On Mar 29, 2015
Whereas in 2011, the post elections violence followed almost immediately unlike this time around; social media penetration/ integration was about 60% far less than it is today. Some fools claim social media result trends were the cause of the violence and still have the temerity to say that discredit should be dished out to the results which we witnessed with our eyes and ears and decided to share with our brothers and the rest of the world. They even say - 'Only immature minds follow election results on social media, mature minds wait for INEC to announce the results'. That Reno Omokri came on social media (twitter to be specific) to make the above statement gets me wondering how mature he is given that he is using the same social media platform to send out his message.
It highlights the way in which some Nigerians are complacent or amnesiac about their history.

The great thing about shamelessness is that in an amnesiac culture, it works.

they can say whatever they like about 1983-85, i wasn't born then; but not 2011, i was 20+ then
PoliticsFAYOSES' MADNESS & PDP's OBSCURE AGENDA by mandy4s(op): 12:34pm On Jan 21, 2015
Fayoses’ Madness & PDPs' Obscured Agenda

My attention has been drawn to and my ire aroused by a string of recent, rather absurd looking advertorials I see in the national dailies. Yes, the dawn of the elections is upon us and as expected, political camps will stop at nothing to bring down their perceived opposition while still having some impetus to present themselves as saints to us, our messiahs. An unfortunate corollary of this is the cheap slander to which these politicians have resorted and sometimes outright insulting of one another. Yet these same politicians are parading themselves as best choices for us the electorate, as supposed embodiment of values, ethics and morals; elements they so lack that their dearth could cause famine in the Sahara desert.
It bothers me when a people look so desperate in their bid to get what they want that they engage in despicable acts. Acts such as this front page advertorial apparently put up by Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state are so poignant one begins to wonder if this is actually coming from a democratically elected governor of a state or just some uneducated political stalwart.
Coming at a time when every sensible citizen of Nigeria is preaching a deviation from thinking and acting along ethnic lines and a total shunning of ethno-religious discriminations, Fayoses’ advertorial can worst be described as hateful, divisive and archaic.
It is a grave insult on the honour if any country for its past leaders to be ridiculed publicly and the case should be no different here in Nigeria. To make this situation all the more worse, Fayoses’ careless act has added salt to injury by insulting the sensibilities of every northern Nigerian in particular and all Nigerians in general.
There is no gainsaying that Nigeria’s past (especially under the military rule) has been interjected by occurrences of retrogressive nature, painfully laced within her leadership weave; occurrences that helped shaped the nation into what it is today. We cannot but draw upon the lessons learned during these times as we strive to create the Nigeria of our dreams.
That in the past 50 years or so, almost every Nigerian president or Head of State has been of northern extraction is not anyone’s fault but an act of sheer fate. For some the opportunity has been easy going while others have sadly become victims of the cruelty of fate.
On the front page of the Daily Sun newspaper of 19th January 2015 is a heinous advertorial (canvassing support for the presidential ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan) displaying the faces of Nigeria’s past leaders viz: the late Murtala Mohammed, the late Sani Abacha and the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. In addition to these faces is that of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari with a big question mark slammed against it and his age boldly highlighted by the side. Fayose discriminatorily tells us that these men who have at one point or the other led Nigeria come from north-west region. The mad man doesn’t just stop there, but wickedly goes on to point out the fact that all these men with the exception of Buhari have actually died while in office as head of the Nigerian government, where he questions Buhari’s chances at survival (should he be elected into Aso Rock) given he is 72 years of age. Forgive my interpretations but I think Fayose clearly slaps northern Nigeria in the face, telling them that no leader of good omen has come out from this region as he caps his advertorial saying, ‘enough of state burials’.
While I have decided against reacting to the inclusion of the other three past leaders in this advertorial, the public ridicule of the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has irked me the most. This pricks my very soul. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a man of reputable integrity, a man who commanded my respect. It takes a leader full of courage and humility and honesty to admit he is a product of a faulty, sour system and this man did just that. Not only that, he initiated a visionary process of amnesty and reconciliation that would eventually stem the ugly, rising tide of militancy in the Niger Delta which threatened the entire socio-economic setup/structure of Nigeria. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua is a man ought to be remembered in good light and whose honesty, ethics and values (sadly characteristics that Fayose sorely lacks) should be emulated but unfortunately he is a victim of Fayose’s warped imaginations and by extension PDP’s obscure agenda approaching the February general elections. To think that the late president is the immediate past boss of the current president during whose tenure they both enjoyed a peaceful and cordial relationship together has got me thinking what President Jonathan feels about his latest, “ingenious” campaign strategy. It is obvious Jonathan has more “motor-park touts” to deal with within than without as Fayoses’ acts suggests nothing otherwise.
Now as a matter of great sensitivity, I demand that Ayo Fayose apologises to the whole of Nigeria, the north-west in particular and most specifically the Yar’Adua family. Fayose should be made to issue his sorry statement in a televised media conference. Only then will Nigerians be assured that the Jonathan led administration under the PDP are serious with their much touted promises to lead this great nation up the right path. Until then (and I doubt this will ever be done), I urge Nigerians to think twice and consider the PDP carefully at the forthcoming polls. As expected, we know the PDP will rush to disassociate itself from this ugly incident as it usually does without addressing the crux of the matter (a case of a medical doctor treating the symptoms of an illness instead of eliminating its root cause) but Nigerians should refuse to be cajoled this time out until the right thing is done.
One last word for Fayose though, I have no passages from my Bible for you but I believe you are a Yoruba man who understands the import of traditional proverbs and adages. Well, where I come from, there is a saying that goes thus; “Death is not reserved for the sick alone”. I want to for once believe you will be wise enough to understand this proverb, if not you can momentarily borrow the needed insight from elders in your village.
We Nigerians do not want hateful elements in our political campaigns, in our governments, in our society anymore!!! Thank You.

I came across these 2 discharge certificates while serving in Abuja from 2012-2013. The discharge date here says 2012, so am guessing these guys just passed out before I came in. well I happened to be in various leadership positions during my service here, hence how I came in possession of these. Please lets all join and share or comment on this. You may just know one of the owners. We all know how heart breaking it is to be job hunting without incomplete credentials. Swearing affidavit and all that. Hopefully these guys are on nairaland too.
PLEASE OOO LET ME SAY THAT I DIDN’T TRUST THE ACTIONS OF NYSC OFFICIALS THAT’S WHY I NEVER HANDED THESE IN SINCE THEN.
I believe we can still do the right thing here since we are wearing same shoes. Thanx y’all
