If your concern is the cost of living, Ottawa is not going to eat up the entire extra pay. You can find a residential area that suits your budget and commute to work. If you are concerned about offending family and friends in Calgary, you can make plans to go and visit them when you have time off.
Note that your current salary is leverage for negotiating your next raise. If you take a higher paying job, you set yourself up for an even higher one down the road. Your salary will create a perception of your worth in the eyes of future recruiters, right or wrong. Their mindset for higher paid individuals is that that they have to 'up their game' with them. They will believe they have to present to you better and higher paying jobs than your current one, in order to entice you. If you take the lesser paying one now, in most cases you will have to somehow 'earn your way' to the higher level one, before you get offered something higher than that, in the future.
IT security is a very lucrative and mobile career. As a Canadian, you can work globally with relative ease. You can get an even higher paying job than the one in Ottawa in another part of the world. What would your friends and family say then? What you would you say?
Make up your own mind and do what you know is best for you.

Well said, i like your perspective .

Good morning folks. Please I have a good problem and I'm losing sleep over it already.

I'm currently in Calgary, staying with my cousin for about 2 months now. Just recently, I got a job here in Calgary and I'm expected to resume tomorrow. Let me also say that the pay is quite good too. However, last week thursday, I got another job at Ottawa and the difference in salary is about 18k (gross)

Both jobs are of the same category, Senior IT Security role.

Now to the main point: I'm seriously contemplating relocating my wife and son to Ottawa but my cousin feels the increase in salary is not material enough to offset the cost of living @ Ottawa in short and long term. He's of the opinion that staying close to family and friends in Calgary will be beneficial to me in the long run.

Please for folks living in both cities, which do you think is the best choice at this point in time? Should I stay in Calgary or move to Ottawa?

P.S My wife is also into IT Security but she's yet to get a job in Calgary yet.

Thanks

18k difference is gross so I think you should use the net difference instead. Cost of living is slightly higher in Ottawa so factor this as well. Please, pray about it and God will guide your decision.

You are hot cake already. Calgary or Ottawa, you shall succeed.

Congrats, it ended in praise. Canada will favour you and your family.

Yuyukoko:
1st attempt - 2005 ( study permit denied, Lagos)
2nd attempt - 2014 (visitor's visa denied, Lagos)
3rd attempt - 2015 ( study permit denied, Lagos)
4th attempt - 2017 ( study permit denied, London)
5th attempt - 2018 ( permanent residency approved baby!)

I always wanted to go to Canada. Always been my only interest. I used to say it will be Nigeria or Canada for me. I even learnt the national anthem... After all the earlier attempts, I lost my guts. Went to join hubby in England, and tried to face the future.

You know that thing about true love eh? I couldn't settle for England. I woke one morning, told hubby I was booking a flight to return to Nigeria, he asked me to book for me and shoot, a week after we landed back home.

I got really fearful I've made a mistake, all the admission letters ( from 3 universities sitting in my inbox), some pounds in my account, I started looking for work again in Nigeria. Was invited to my previous work place in Lagos, but I knew accepting it will cost someone else her job. So I turned it down. I finally got a job. They were deceived to think I'm a serious person, they promoted me easily... All I wanted was to go school in Canada...

Hubby then mentioned express entry. I couldn't care anymore. I grudgingly wrote the IELTS. Loads of youtube tutorials, I used tutorials by Jay and Liz. Passed it all. Hubby wrote too, and he passed.

So I asked for a sign from God , that we can gather the POF with ease. ( Funds were mainly reasons for refusal earlier). Na so both Mums funded our account, plus our savings.

Timeline :

AOR :September 23, 2018

Teary day in between when I realized file was in Accra.
ADR : The famous 5. Submitted March 10.
PPR: April 23, 2019. It finally came in the mid of a meeting. I was just looking at them all and writing my resignation mentally.

This morning, we have begun searching for flights. And I'm beyond grateful and dazed by God. I'm finally going to school in Canada. And it's on the best visa I could imagine ...

Morale:

Pray to God. He's alive.

Don't stop dreaming, you have no idea how many conversations I've had with Canadian professors and friends in my head.

While waiting, get better. Stay prepared. I honestly made alot of decisions considering my baggage in kg, if it will be useful in Canada...

Pray to God . He better be involved every step of the way.

Ask questions. Stay informed. Seek for answers. Seek for help...

Stay hopeful and positive. All those shit refusals are over now!

Pray to God. Thank Him. It's time for Thanksgiving. Whether you've received yours or not.

Thank you fam. Loads of love from a clinic, someone thinks a baby is on the way...

I have gotten to learn so much on this thread and Nairaland in General. I just got a job after 2 months of Landing and I have so much to tell people. That would be my own way of giving back to the society, but I plan to deactivate this account, am lost between giving the landing gist with this account that is soon going to be defunct or using the brand new account I am just going to unveil.

To start with, nobody will give you a job on a platter, the offer I got I had 5 interviews for the position. The best way to start in my own opinion is to have an open mind and apply for survival jobs as well as professional job at the same time.

Do not allow your survival job prevent you from attending interview and dont be afraid to take risks . I forwent a decent job offer for the prospect of a better job that I did not have because even the person that interviewed me told me he knew I would get a better offer but if I decide to stay with them I would have to stick with them for a long time.

I rejected the job despite the fact that I did not have any job at that time, but today it was a smart decision. It didn't look so great at the time though.

Lesson 1 : Surround yourself with positive people and those who believe in you.
cool cool cool cool

Did you eventually move out of Calgary?

I know Toronto is the hub of IT jobs in Canada. What do you think of Ottawa, i read Kanata is becoming a hub of IT and offers a great prospect for IT jobs.

What do you think?

Hey folks, this advice is specifically for those in IT Field more specifically software / computer engineers ,and Full stack developers

Thanks for this update. I can attest to the data structures and algorithms part as most software companies are now using online coding sites to test candidates. The likes of Opera and Andela in Nigeria have caught the bug too.

Please can i PM you? Make i have you in my network and ask few software jobs related questions.

hi guys Iam currently in Calgary, I came in to Canada 2 weeks ago but I have found the IT market here is not so robust for me as an application support analyst.

I have registered for the alberta health card but yet to get it, as a FSW/express entry am considering moving to Ontario, any problem with that ? MY SIN printout carries Alberta aaddress wont this be a problem ?

I am currently staying with a friend here in Calgary so if anyone has moved from Alberta to ontario or from any other province to Ontario please advise me.

Bruv, can I PM you. I was thinking of landing in Calgary too but with your post I am considering Ontario as I am in the IT industry. What’s the prospect for software developers in Alberta?
