For people thinking of coming to America through Mexico, let me give you one advice, don't ever and I mean ever try it. The danger outweighs the benefit. True Story A successful Ibo boy (not trying to be tribalistic but to make a point) came into America 6 years ago through Mexico. He entered Mexico from Nigeria and was there for 6 months before finally meeting a cartel that will cross him over. He paid $3500 for them to cross him over and the journey began from Mexico to America, they spent 2 weeks crossing because they have to walk some part, dodge from border patrol and also transfer vehicle. To cut the story short he made it to America through New Mexico. Note: he didn't come with his passport because he doesn't want that found on him in case he was arrested so he left it with a Ghana boy in Mexico. On arriving in America he made his way to another state through another Nigerian guy that they gave him his contact. He called the Ghana boy to send his passport to him but that one refused and said he has to pay $5k to get it, after negotiation he paid $4k and it was shipped to him. Well now 6 years down the line the guy never get green card, he cant rent a house, he cant even go to the store to buy a bottle of beer because he has no id and without id here you cant buy beer. He works in construction with a bunch of illegal Mexicans and drives a lexus with another person drivers license. He buys cars and send it home to sell and he lives in a house under another persons name. Now you will think he is successful, but he can never come to Nigeria, he has a wife and kids in Nigeria but he will not see them until God knows when. His ibo friends gang up on him one day and beat him up and took all his Money. He had to suck it up and nurse his injuries alone cos he cant call the cops. Does he have money in America? yes. Does he have peace of mind? No. will he ever get a green card here? I doubt it. In the long run it is not worth it. I met this guy here and I am got my citizenship before a year of getting here just because I came in legally. |
Olacombs23:Marrying a Nigerian American for green card is a very very wrong decision. They will not marry you if you don't have a green card. A Nigerian American girl told my friend point blank, I lovr uou but I cant file green card for you...Go and marry an Akata and get a green card then when you get the card and divorce her then I will marry you. Nigerian American girls no get any help wey den go do for you. |
Olacombs23:Bros all these things look very easy on paper but in reality it will drain you mentally and psychologically. You don't just marry and you get green card automatically. I have three friends who are hooked right now just because of this reason. Immigration will stalk your life...Facebook, instagram and twitter....something will give you up and they will know the marriage is not legit. |
Cuteamigo1:I will bring you back to that Kennedy quote. When you are ready and willing to do something for your country but you country is not ready to accept what you are ready to do for it, then what will you do? Kill yourself? people who have followed this your quote and decided to do something for Nigeria where are they today. I want to believe you are a young man or woman as the case may be and I want to believe also that you have ideas on how to move Nigeria forward, but answer this question and be sincere. If you don't have the means to mobilize thugs, have a godfather or belong to the so called elite, can you declare your intentions of holding a political post and not be silenced even before you open your mouth. So if another country give you the platform to put your ideas in motion, wont you take it? A friend of mine came home to contest for House of rep in the last election, this is a successful guy full of ideas to the extent that ideas don't let him sleep, even before the primaries he was attached by political thugs on Lagos Ibadan expressway. Thank God he was an American citizen he had to be flown abroad just so he can live again. So call me an hypocrite for developing another mans country, I will accept it. |
cicc2010:What type of Nigerians do you people meet outside of the country, you only come here to talk about the ones selling newspapers and the ones who are hungry. Why not talk of the ones who have made names for themselves in the US, One of the best Doctors in Texas Methodist Harris hospital in downtown Forth Worth is a Nigerian, there are a lot of Nigerian engineers here, not to talk of accountants. Americans in the US armed forces always envy us because as enlisted soldiers we come in as specialist E4 because of our college degree that I was proud to tell my fellow soldiers in the army that an average Nigerian has a university degree and this made them respect us the more. So before you come here and paint all Nigerians living abroad as newspaper sellers and hungry, do your research. |
jossymama:Ok let me answer your question the way I can. I totally understand where you are coming from and its unfortunate your business is not moving as it used to. Relocating to the US however is not as easy as it looks. Getting settled here doesn't come easy because everything revolve around you having a green card. You cant even get a job or get an apartment if you don't have it but oh well some people who don't have it work under the table. You have a very good skill which makes lots of money here because to make just a braid here in Dallas is $200 or more but these days even braiding centers don't want to help people anymore because as soon as you start knowing customers, you boycott who put you in the shop and start taking their business to your house or the customers houses. Madam, let me cut the long story short, settling down in USA is not very easy but its worth giving a try, nothing tried nothing done. I wish I can help you further. |
peacengine:Hahahaha na green card you just talk like that. Im sorry I cant help in this regard. You can visit Uscis.gov on how to go about it. |
Pamelayoung:Are you in America? if you are in America, all you need do is check online and apply. Indeed.com is a very good resource to get jobs. Getting this jobs outside of America is not easy. Getting a job in America is one of the easiest things, once you send your resume and you have the right qualification and experience then you are sure of getting the job. |
worry359:No you don't need to educate him. its a lost cause. |
The US Marines is basically an Infantry army of the Navy, nothing to drool about IMO. It's Infantry, entry requirements for Infantry are the lowest when compared to other soldier roles. This applies in all armies, not just US.[/quo With all due respect what you just wrote is completely incorrect. I am infantry in the US Army and I trained out of Ft Benning in Georgia, there is no written rule that infantry requirements are the lowest. I scored 92% on my ASVAB. Well since you are not a woman I wouldn't expect you to drool at the sight of a well dressed man in a service uniform, the question is do you know what the service uniform is. As someone who have been to many occasions in my Army Service Uniform and witnessed/see reactions of females around me, I can boldly tell you women drool. |
worry359:Lol well if he thinks he is just gonna pick up green card then he must be living in la la land. He only ask for how to join the marines and I explained. Maybe if he later ask for how to get the green card then that is another discussion. |
Ok as someone who is presently in the US Army, I will explain to you how you can join the marines. The first thing you need is to be a green card holder. Contact a marine recruiter and take the test. The test is called ASVAB and it comprises of the stuff you already know before. You need to score high to be considered, for the army I think u need to score 40%but I don't know the cut off for the Marines. After passing the ASVAB, you are scheduled for a medical at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), there you do your physical and other health related test to ascertain your level of fitness. This is where you sign your contract and the next thing is for you to go to the boot camp. However, coming out as a marine is not automatic because trust me boot camp is tough, it is more mental than physical but if you are strong both mentally and physically you will scale through....Just know you sit ups, Pull ups and be able to run. Also, your shooting skills have to be superb....Then you can now call yourself a marine and wear the coveted Service Uniform that makes any girl drool. LOL The Few...The Proud...The Marines. Semper Fi. |
OlayinkaFawaz:Well then i can see you dont understand what i mean. i am not saying you are not a newbie, i am asking what visa status are you. Goodluck to you. |
Your post got me cracking up here men. You said "tho i havent become a citizen" you never even get social security number you dey talk of citizen. Well getting a part time job depends on your status. Answer this question, what is your status then maybe i can point you in the right direction. |
Centyellow:Well this is what you should do, once you already know what you want, Write it on a board and plaster it on your chest. By the time you walk from Houston to Dallas you will get one or two. Doctor ko babalawo ni. |
PushPlay:No convertible KEKE |
This right here brought back memories of 1998 when Abiola died. I would never forget that day as long as i live. Having to pass through Bodija market to get to Agbowo as a student of Methodist grammar school bodija. I remember the policemen telling us to hold hands and they were leading us through. Suddenly fighting broke out again under the bodija bridge around what is now skye bank area. I remember the guy in front of me being hit with the stick the hausas use in controlling their cattle called "Sanda" and his head burst open. I would have outran Usain Bolt that day if he was to be beside me. |
CastedDude:Get it together. He is not meant to have pimples at that age. |
Lol....I have been waiting for a day someone will bring this issue up. This same thing haooened to me in front of Airport hotel in ikeja in 2011. i went there to change some pounds and i was already told where to go by my sister who sent me but as soon as i came down from the bike, two men approached me and said do i wanna change money and my reply was yes, i said how much was their rate and they gave me 20 naira more than what i was going to change it in the hotel. I tot i made a good deal and when the guy counted the money and gave it to me, i counted 98 and the guy said ok bring it let me count again. i gave it to him, i noticed when he got to 15 he paused the continued again not knowing he has used his fingers to seperate the money at that point. After counting he said oh sorry its 98 and gave me 2 pieces of #1000 naira note, stupid me i didnt recount, i just put the money in my pocket and gave them the pounds. They even stopped a bike for me that took me back to 7up bus stop. I got to my sisters house, gave her the money and in my presence she counted 85...it was as if Karl Drogo just slapped me, i was dazed. took the money from her and counted again and it was still 85....i wanted to faint. If i had a gun that day ehn, i would have done a drive by yankee style and just shoot everybody in that place. Time actually heal wounds cos now i can just remember that day and all i do i smile. |
Hillarious..... Lalasticlala come see as Naija man chop Oyinbo money o. |
bee444:Most people wont agree with this but stay away from Nigerians when you are in a foreign country. They dont want you to succeed or be above them. If you have to, move with people of like minds. |
McMayowa:Best advice |
deehusby60:No you need brain. What is wrong with you people. What has covering head have to do with anything. She covered her head to sign a deal and so what? If covering her head is what is going to make life worth living for a Nigerian like you then so be it. What sacrifice have you as a person made for Nigeria or the guy pushing wheelbarrow in your neighborhood with your non head covering self. She covered her head, signed the deal and unto the next one. |
Na wa for Nigerians sha. People just come to Nairaland everyday to display their ignorance. What has her covering her head have to do with anything. Maybe the OP should read a book on inernational business, law and diplomacy then you will understand that if you are in a foreign country for business related issues you act according to the culture and norms of the country. You learn about a country's culture and even religion beofre you go there. Well thats what is taught in MBA class and most people dont have the privilege to attend such so they dont know. In the words of Don Corleone, "IT IS STRICTLY BUSINESS AND NOT PERSONAL" |
joliyp:Lol....who has the time to wait for the ones not yet born when there is one already born. You are only trying to be modest i understand that. |
Africa. Schools in the most remote parts of the USA and Europe have wayyyy better facilities than this. And some delusional people think Africa will catch up with the west? Hilarious.[/qu Africa still has a long way to go honestly. |
Are you that hungry? |
joliyp:Are you not the most beautiful girl on Nairaland. I just cant stop looking at your picture. |
Hmmmmm i read with fascination the mixed reactions on this topic and i think i should drop a few pointers. 1. The OP asked his warehouse manager which i want to believe is his immediate boss. There is something called the chain of command and in this type of case, the warehouse manager is your first line supervisor and you did no wrong by telling him first. He told you to go to the MD to make the request by yourself, this to me is incompetence on the part of the manager. In more organised companies, an MD would not even listen to what you have to say if it does not come from your first line supervisor. 2. Some people here are claiming you are wrong for not informing him hence the justification for you being slapped. i want to state categorically here that no employer have no right whatsoever to resort to physical abuse of an employee, some do emotional abuse and get away with it because there is no proof but physical abuse is a no no. 3. Other argued that you were aware of how he maltreat others in the past but you never said anything until it got to your turn, well i will say in Nigeria there is still a level of colonial mentality in our thinking that we are quick to attack if a black man maltreat us but slow to attack if it is a white man or brown man. Most of these people who complain would not even follow you if you shout Aluta continua because they dont know where the next meal is gonna come from. 4. You went through the legal process. I applaud you for this because most people would resort to fighting and destroying properties of the company just to shouw their greivance and there by losing the assault case before it even start, mind you he might even order other Nigerians there to deal with you and they wont even hesitate. |
CFCman:Yeah it is 10 years and that makes it very nice. As a naija guy I was even scared they might misplace my citizenship certificate cos things like that happen in Nigeria but they returned it in due time. God bless America |
