dotun365: No amount is too much for rent. Comfort can never be too expensive. I don't know what kind of apartment you are staying in for 300k in yaba to give any advise. But you should be mindful of the fact that Nigeria is a rough place and anything can happen at anytime so you want to build a good buffer in savings and investment and that could mean cutting down on comfort now. It's a mini flat..quite comfortable sha. Thanks for the advice bro |

Clarathomp: Most of us don't make a lot of money to be able to afford accommodations within our means. What I mean is this - we earn about 100 to 150k, but good accommodation in Lagos is expensive so what do we do?
We stretch ourselves to make things happen for the good but expensive accommodation. I'm sure if you see accommodation for 150k, you yourself will walk away because you won't like it.
Save 20 or 30k from your salary each month towards your next rent and if your office has benefits like leave allowance, car loans, 13th month etc, you can easily make the rent, when you are legible for those benefits.
Success with making the rent each time it is due, also boils down to discipline oh! Thanks |

haladadon: I earn 194K and I don't even have a house, I squat with my uncle. I'm afraid of even spending the money. I used to sleep on the streets before with street kids.
now I don't want to leave my old lifestyle. only my dad knows I have a job. no one else knows.
renting a house is not worth it, you'll soon get lonely looking for who to marry and all that stuff. I don't understand this comment o..is getting married now a sin...i hope to do so very soon, as soon as God will bless me with something bigger...if this is your idea of saving money abeg i no do. |

AroOkigbo: Your annual rent should not be more than your 2 months salary. So you are already on the high side. Again, the 3 months may still fly when you consider living near your place of work. Thanks |

Good evening nairalanders, I earn 100k a month which amounts to 1.2 million per annum. I just secured an apartment in yaba which cost 300k per year. I chose yaba because of its proximity to the island which is where i work.
I want to know if the rent costs too much for someone of my status.
Am I about to start living above my means? Advice needed. |

FunnyDude: I don't usually comments on topic like this but I'll do.
This is what I'll told my brother as well.
Sir! it's good to live in a nice apartment. But don't you think we need to save for the raining days as you're still single?
Unless you want settle down in a year time from now. If not please get a flat mate and save that money for some business opportunities coming your way.
Assuming you told us, you have like other TWO sources of additional income then problem. But having depending on 1.2m per annum as a young guy is not ideal.
If it's me, I'll rent a room and manage so far I'm not married yet, just to keep saving. Be wise bro!
Remember, a single source of income is not healthy at all. Start saving heavily and investing in side business. Thanks for the advice |

3Dee: I experienced same, people castigated me for it, but I can't inconvenience myself to please people. If you don't have any "responsibilities" the house is ok for you. Ensure you start contributing 50k every month. In a year you'll have 600k. |

3Dee: It's better you look for a room self con on the Island and pay same amount. you'll reduce transport cost and experience less stress Okay nice idea...but wanted to know if the financial burden of the house rent is too much for now. |

Longman6: Whats your job decription in Zenit Bank? i doubt it is something as prestigious as Treasury, guy, Zenith bank would employ GT's and you would feel bad, while wait 4years to be a permanent staff,?except its your passion,(start writing ICAN,ACCA or all), if not move bro. Content production is bae if you can be committed to it, Few people know how to write, just learn the ruduments of advertising well, creative writing, and client relations...you are good. Kindly move except you think this contract just is buying you time to make your next big move Thanks bro...i think I would take my chances with the advertising firm. |

chigosman: career wise ...stick with Zenithbank ..can't you do the writing job as partime job for the organisation?
meanwhile how does one apply for contract work with Zenith? It's mostly through referral.....the writing job is a full time job not part time....and Zenith are offering 75k for 4 years before confirmation. |

Good day nairalanders....i am currently at a crossroad...i currently work at Zenith bank as a contract staff earning about 75k a month. The contract runs for 2 years and would be renewed when it ends...Zenith bank normally takes about 4 years to confirm one as a staff these days, well that being said I just secured a job as a writer in one of the major advertising firms in nigeria, the pay is about twice what I currently earn.
The problem is that I see Zenith bank as a more stable organisation compared to the advertising firm. Meaning it might take a while but I could actually build a career with Zenith. What do you guys think? Should I take the offer
*I am about 28 years old |
