Foreign AffairsWomen Suggest Sex Strike To End War In South Sudan by marvelling(op): 2:22pm On Oct 23, 2014
A group of South Sudanese women peace activists has
suggested that men in the civil war-torn country be
denied sex until they stop fighting.
The suggestion emerged after around 90 women,
including several members of South Sudan’s parliament,
met in the capital Juba this week to come up with ideas
on how to “to advance the cause of peace, healing and
reconciliation”.
A key suggestion was to “mobilise all women in South
Sudan to deny their husbands conjugal rights until they
ensure that peace returns,” organisers said in a statement
Thursday.
Other proposals included finding ways to meet the wives
of President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival, rebel chief Riek
Machar, to “ask them to join the search for peace and
reconciliation by impressing upon their husbands to stop
the war”.
Thousands of people have been killed and almost two
million have fled the fighting between government
troops, mutinous soldiers and tribal militia forces.
Civilians have been massacred, patients murdered in
hospitals and people killed while sheltering in churches.
Almost 100,000 people are sheltering in squalid UN
peacekeeping bases fearing they will be killed if they
leave.
Tobias Atari Okori, from the government-backed South
Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission,
acknowledged that the idea highlighted that people were
desperate for the war to end.
“People are experiencing great suffering, and it is the
women, children and the aged who are suffering the
worst,” he told AFP.
The UN special envoy on sexual violence Zainab Bangura
said this month the levels of rape are the worst she had
ever seen.
Political and military leaders have repeatedly broken
promises made under intense international pressure,
including during visits to South Sudan by UN chief Ban
Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Earlier this month, a group of 19 major aid agencies
warned that while massive food drops had helped avert
famine for now, the threat remained and would continue
to worsen the longer the war continues.

HealthRe: Medical Laboratory Technician by marvelling(m): 1:41am On Oct 11, 2014
soloxxng:
Overview:
Medical laboratory technicians may function behind the scenes, but the work that they do is exciting, varied and vital to the quality of a patient's healthcare. Conducting lab tests ordered by doctors and other healthcare providers, these professionals work with human bodily fluids and tissue samples to determine diagnoses and identify abnormalities. They work with microscopes, computers and other automated laboratory machines, where they keep detailed records of the data they compile.
Some medical laboratory technicians prefer the more generalist nature of work at a large hospital lab or independent facility while others pursue a specialty in areas such as immunology, microbiology and clinical chemistry. No matter which approach they choose, they are important members of the healthcare industry whose work is instrumental in determining the correct diagnoses.

Work Environment:
Most medical laboratory technicians work in hospitals and medical or diagnostic laboratories; a smaller percentage work in physicians’ and dentists’ offices, or in state or federal agencies. While some of their work involves contact with infectious material or pungent fumes, technicians are always properly protected, wearing goggles, gloves, or masks for much of their workday. They generally keep regular business hours, though some work in the evenings, on nights, weekends, and some holidays, as needed by hospitals and other 24-hour facilities.

Requirements:

Education

Medical lab technicians need a two-year associate’s degree to work in their field. Those with degrees or experience in a similar field are eligible for one-year certificate programs. Courses in these programs tend to be science-oriented and focus on general laboratory knowledge. Finding an accredited program is beneficial for better job opportunities, and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences has a list of accredited educational programs.

Training

Medical lab technicians are trained on the job by a medical laboratory technologist or a senior technician. In some cases, a healthcare or medical professional is the primary trainer. The training duration depends on the employer’s policies and the technician’s previous experience.

Licensing and/or Certification

In some states, medical lab technicians must have a license or be registered to work. Licensure often involves passing an exam or undergoing a certification process, and requirements vary by state.

Necessary Skills and Qualities

In addition to their technical skills—such as the ability to understand and operate complex machinery, and to collect and analyze data—medical lab technicians must have an eye for detail. These employees must strive to obtain the most accurate results possible due to the importance of their work. They should possess good manual dexterity for working precisely with microscopic material, and have stamina, too, needed when spending extended time sitting and analyzing a specimen, or when on their feet for long periods during the workday.

Opportunities for Advancement

Medical lab technicians often become medical laboratory technologists—bachelor’s-degree-prepared professionals who perform more complex laboratory work and have a leadership role. Medical lab techs also have a good knowledge base to become scientists, researchers, or even transition into a senior or administrative role. They can also move from allied health to direct patient care jobs, such as nursing; or they can switch fields and work as veterinary, biologic, or chemistry lab technicians.

Salary:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical laboratory technicians’ salaries ranged from approximately $25,210 to $58,910 in May 2013, with a median annual wage of about $37,970. Outpatient facilities paid the highest, followed by hospitals, physicians’ offices, and medical and diagnostic laboratories.

Please don't go for any of them! If you want to do a
medical related course either choose medicine &
surgery, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing or medical
laboratory science. These courses train you to be a
functional part of the healthcare delivery system
Anatomy, physiology & medical biochemistry are all
under the basic medical sciences. The primary focus of
these courses is research. The only thing they teach
you how to do is research (you are trained to be a
medical research scientist). its not a bad thing though,
but considering the present economic realities in
nigeria and the current trends in the nigerian labour
market, its advisable for you to go for a professional
undergraduate course (like the ones I listed above). If
you don't mind having a career as a research scientist
in nigeria then you can go for any of them, but don't
allow yourself to come under the delusion that you'll
be employed to be part of the healthcare delivery team
with a bsc in any of these courses.

CareerRe: Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum by marvelling(m): 10:05pm On Oct 02, 2014
coollabman: @YourHealthlabs

I admire the way you champion the cause of med lab scientists on this forum. From your posts I've seen the way you take the fight to medical doctors there and expose the way they oppress other healthcare professionals in nigeria.

Unfortunately, light hasn't been shown on how the med lab scientist apply similar tactics (as medical doctors do) against individuals that are graduates of biochemistry and microbiology. There is no good reason why individuals who hold bsc in the above mentioned fields should not be allowed to practice the profession that requires knowledge in their fields. I am surprised that MLSCN could come up with frivolous reasons to justify their decision to place an embargo on individuals who hold a bsc in microbiology & biochemistry (which I learnt you guys prefer to call chemical pathology).

I have done my search online and found out that it is only in nigeria where such absurd views are held. Even in nearby ghana, their GABMLS (ghanian association of biomedical laboratory scientists) does not place such unnecessary embargo.

I am a microbiologist, I did my internship in the nigerian institute of medical research. The attitude the med lab scientists there displayed toward me was disgusting. I am aggrieved. I see no wrong in me if I decide to be a medical microbiologist, I see no wrong if I decide to open a laboratory in my community and offer clinical diagnostic services. Why is MLSCN frustrating my ambition in life? Why do you guys feel oppressing people like me will solve any problem that affects the profession?

I have taken my time to go through the act of parliament that created MLSCN. In that bill, provision is made for MLSCN to license bsc holders in microbiology & biochemistry for clinical work. I have been made to understand that the council has the right to refuse/reject/withhold license from any individual without being questioned. This is the only reason I have not gone to court over this issue. When the institute of medical laboratory technology was still in existence such things never came up. I wonder why MLSCN decided to tow this line.

The year 2015 will make it 7 years since this "suspension" was placed on bsc holders. Several overtures, by some of my senior colleagues, to MLSCN to reconsider this issue has been rebuffed. Its unfortunate that we'll have to fight against MLSCN to get a foothold and secure the future of our careers as medical microbiologists and medical biochemists.

I have information that in the united states, there are two professional bodies that concern themselves with clinical diagnostics of diseases. We will set up a parallel body (affiliated with NMA) if MLSCN does not reconsider their stand on licensure for bsc holders in the biological sciences (microbiology & biochemistry).

Drastic measures will have to taken, its unfortunate.
Wow! shocked I can see a lot of frustration in your post. Am a microbiologist and I can categorically tell you that you don't have to do clinical diagnostics of infectious diseases professionally to be a medical microbiologist. You can go into public/environmental health. Its actually possible to be registered and licensed as an environmental health officer (apparently they are in short supply) with you bsc in microbiology. Its a good career line to follow.

Leave this medical lab thing, its not as if the so called "professionals" are actually enjoying it (they are mostly underpaid and overworked clinical staff). I wonder why many microbiology students (like yourself) want to die on top this matter. Microbiology is too vast and too important to be narrowed down to the clinical aspect. Please stop trying to be an appendage to the medical profession.

Lastly, I'll have to fault you on contacting YourHealthlabs (yes I will). He is one of the biomedical scientists (like the ones you met in NIMR) that are under the delusion that they are superior to biological scientists like us (some will even go as far as preventing bsc students from getting some clinical training). He once suggested that there is no where in the world where bsc holders in microbiology are trained for clinical work, whereas its a lie (check this link if you doubt www.asm.org/index.php/nrcm-cert scroll down to see it pasted there).

Young man pls don't be frustrated with the way things are, na condition make crayfish bend. #SHALOM
CareerRe: YES! ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Overrated In Nigeria by marvelling(m): 4:26pm On Sep 30, 2014
Olutola88: A nairalander once tried to address this issue but I wasn't satisfied with his approach and his argument.

This piece is not to discourage Nigerians from aspiring to become business owners, it is just to correct some wrong orientation many of us have.

It is conspicuous that the Entrepreneurship Gospel in Nigerian began to have many Ministers and a whole lot of followers ( most of which are blind followers) when the rate of unemployment in Nigeria got out hands. Today, every Tom, Dick and Harry tells you that Entrepreneuship is the only way and that one just has to subscribe to it in order not to become a slave in life.

On several occasions I ask myself why most of these preachers of Entrepreneurship are not well-to-do? I am a youth corper almost through with service and I can't count the number of “preachers” that have stormed our Community Development Service(CDS) meetings since I started NYSC. The pathetic thing is that 99% of them won't make Entrepreneurship attractive to you. Why won't you want to subscribe to their preaching if they came with the best of vehicles, looked smooth, dressed elegantly, appeared sophisticated and cited several tangible achievements. The Yorubas will say: “Eni to ba fe dasho funi, to run e laa koko wo”. Meaning: “When someone promises to buy you a dress, it is wise to consider what he is putting on”.

It is not that I do not cherish entrepreneurship, the only thing I have issues with is the wrong way the Entrepreneuship loyalists go about their preaching.

1. The Preachers want everyone to be business owners forgetting that we all can never be Entrepreneurs:

Entrepreneurship shouldn't be for the masses, it should be for the chosen ones. The Entrepreneuship art is not as easy as those preachers say, I tell people that Entrepreneuship is no child's play. Why is that over 70% of new businesses in Nigeria pack up in the first two years? If we all become entrepreneurs, who will be employees? After all, they say be a job creator and not a job seeker? If we all own businesses, who would we employ to work for us? The truth is that a society/economy need not more than 20% of the population to be entrepreneurs.

We now see most university graduates going into make-up artistry, tailoring, catering, wire works, barbing etc. We now have too many duplicated annoyingly small businesses, I have over 10 graduates that are makeup artists on my bbm contact and over 10 that are into tailoring. I would have been very elated if they were doing very well. The truth is that they are still looking for jobs.

The reason for the failure of most of these too small businesses is the over duplication( everybody is doing the same thing). Another problem I sense is that the bigger businesses enjoy Economies of Scale making them have higher chances of stability and making more profits.

2. Most of the preachers are not realistic in their preaching:

Preachers of entrepreneurship do not inform people of how tough entrepreneuship could be, they make it seem like owning a business is like planting a money tree that matures in about one year. They fail to inform the prospective business owners of the potential 1001 challenges, they make it seem it will be rosy all the way. This could be one of the reasons why these fresh business owners pack up whenever they face little challenges( Entrepreneurship is for people that never give up). I read that Dangote's uncle gave him 500,000 naira business loan in the 70s to start trading? Chai! If that's true, do you know how much 500K worth that time? *laughs in swahili*

3. Most Preachers are not diplomatic in their preaching, they sometime discourage job seekers and even “console” themselves by calling employees slaves:

Why on earth should they preach entrepreneuship aggressively? Sell your thing, I sell my thing. Why do you have to say people waste time going to school? Why do you have to say job seekers are wasting their time? Why should you say employees are slaves to employers ( like say you they do better than them*lmao*). No wonder someone once said: Dear Entrepreneurship preacher, I DON't MIND BEING A SLAVE TO SHELL *ROTFL*
The most humorous thing is that most of these preachers became entrepreneurs not because they so much fancied it but because say na condition make dem crayfish bend. *chai! did I just speak pidgin? No wonder my grammar is bad* lmao!

I'm tired of typing already, so I'll like to conclude this my boring story.

I know the benefits of Entrepreneurship and I tried it first as a 16 year-old teenager. It was successful as the business expanded in 10 folds from that time till date. Nevertheless, I'll be selling off the business soon because I've outgrown the business. I said this to let readers know that I'm not an anti-entrepreneuship. I'll definitely own a big successful business someday(by HIS special grace) but before then I want to get a very good job. I have that thing for something in the corporate world,I want to be the most performing employee before becoming the a successful businessman, I want to serve someone first( after all, mighty Aliko Dangote first served his uncle before he was given a business loan to start his own business).

NIGERIANS OVERRATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP!
This is very provocative! I don't completely agree with you though. I believe in establishing multiple streams of income (this belief does not exclude getting a job and being paid monthly salary).
