Education / 50 Lecturers Quit Over Pay by massach79: 6:43pm On Aug 06, 2010
Fifty lecturers have resigned from Yobe College of Education, Gashua, over the non-payment of the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) to staff of the institution, a union official said.

Alhaji Isa Bukar, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of the College, told newsmen in Damaturu on Thursday that the lecturers left following the suspension of the structure by the Yobe Government after paying it for two months.

“The state government had earlier agreed to pay 80 per cent of the salary structure. This propelled the lecturers to suspend their seven months strike,” Bukar said.

He added “after paying for two months, the government terminated it without contacting us.“

The chairman said the union would not call off the strike unless the government resumed payment of the salary.

“There is no end in sight for the strike because government disregarded peaceful means of resolving the issue.

“They must restore the 80 per cent with the four months arrears before we call off the strike,” he said.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Dauda Yahaya, the Yobe Head of Service, said the government suspended the salary increase to staff of the college because it was unrealistic to isolate the institution from the other five tertiary institutions in the state.

He explained that government approved 30 per cent to the other institutions across board, including academic and non-academic staff.

“Government had to revert the 80 per cent earlier approved for the College because 30 per cent had been approved for all the tertiary institutions, College of Education, Gashua, cannot be an exception, moreso, the state resources are dwindling,” Yahaya said.

He said the government had in the last three months implemented the 30 per cent increase to the college, which others had all enjoyed.

The Head of Service urged the lecturers to resume work, saying that there was room for negotiation.

Politics / Waziri, Efcc Boss To Be Sacked, Jonathan Orders Justice Minister by massach79: 4:30pm On Aug 04, 2010
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri, is to be relieved of her appointment in the next one week.

P.M.NEWS authoritatively gathered that a presidential directive to remove her from her position has been communicated to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke.

The decision to sack Waziri, it was gathered, was not unconnected with pressures from foreign governments who accused her of not fighting corruption effectively.

The foreign interests, P.M.NEWS gathered, recently forwarded a damaging dossier on the organisation and its officials to President Goodluck Jonathan.

The foreign interest, P.M.NEWS gathered further, threatened not to cooperate with the Commission and withhold financial support for it if the Presidency refused to remove Waziri as the EFCC boss.

On receiving the letter, President Jonathan reportedly forwarded it to the AGF and directed him to act within one week.

Investigations revealed that pressures were mounted on President Jonathan by the foreign governments on the report or they will withhold their support for the fight against corruption in the country.

P.M.NEWS glimpsed from the dossier sent to President Jonathan shows how an EFCC official bought 250,000 Pounds house in London and paid with hard currency.

Presidency officials in Aso Rock Abuja, confirmed that two crack detectives are currently being considered to take over from Waziri.

Those being considered are Mr. Tunde Ogunshakin and Ibrahim Lamorde. Both are former heads of operations of the Commission.

The two officials, gathered, are currently being screened by security officials to determine the one best suited for the job.
Politics / Jonathan Bemoans Nigeria’s Problems by massach79: 3:41pm On Aug 04, 2010
President Goodluck Jonathan has confessed that the country is facing a lot of challenges. Among such challenges that have given the President sleepless nights is that money made in Nigeria is invested in other countries.

The reason for this, according to him, is that the country and her citizens live their lives on imported goods and services from such countries.

Jonathan, who lamented on Facebook, a social network on the internet, said: “It is possible most of you know this: Among our many challenges as a nation is how to ensure that the money Nigeria and Nigerians make are channelled towards the country’s advancement.

“Presently monies made in Nigeria even if spent in Nigeria flies out of Nigeria. Let me explain. Most of the things we buy in Nigeria are imported.

“So our naira is largely servicing the country of production. As a matter of urgency we need to stimulate production of goods and services in Nigeria so that when Nigerians spend, most of their expenditure circulates within Nigeria with its attendant multiplier effect of stimulating more production and therefore more expenditure. “

To achieve this, he advised that Nigerians must restore the work ethic; while the government would improve the country’s electricity capacity, fight corruption and promote excellence and quality.

“Also,we must put an end to a situation where people make money based on rent and influence alone. Money should only be made from the production of goods or the provision of a service.

“If we want a country that works according to predictable rules of law with predictable positive consequences to good behaviour, as well as negative consequences to bad behaviour which should encourage every citizen to choose good behaviour we have to build it ourselves. This administration will stand with the people and insist that the right thing be done. So help us God.”

Citing the dedication of the Falconets in the recent Women’s U-20 World Cup, he advised Nigerians to stop living in the past and think of making the country governable.

“It is said that unless you spread your wings, you will never know how far you can fly. The Falconets spread their wings and are flying home with Silver. Before long they will bring home the gold!

“There are vital lessons here for us as a nation: We have a history of troublesome elections in the past, but we are determined to have credible, free and fair elections in the present and the future.

“We have a history of inadequate power supply, but the potential for improvement is there when qualified people implement the right government policies in that sector and appropriate investments are made.

He expressed belief that the post-amnesty programme would yield the desired result and unify the country.”

He also added that the issue of power would be handled like the telecommunication sector.

May God Bless you Chidichris and how I wished everybody on this thread would reason like you as you have said it all about Mikel and Man U. If Mikel had signed for Man U it would have being the end of his career perhaps by now he would have been in oblivion. What has beocme of Manucho; he was sold into slavery by almighty Fergie.

I want to say it again about Fletcher and Anderson who are now playing in Mikel's stead, are they better players to Mikel of Chelsea. How do you measure progress in football? Mikel has won the most coveted trophy in England; Premier League, he has won the FA, which is the oldest inthe history of Football as far is the English foot is concerned, he has won the Carling Cup, won the Community Shield and also won Chelsea Youngest Player Award. On several ocasion he won man of the match and virtually, all the winnable in the English League

Even in Nigeria, he is the most valuable player the country could offer now,

Politics / Uk Court Convicts Nigerian Pastor Over 360 Fake Marriages by massach79: 6:06pm On Jul 30, 2010
According to the Daily Mail of London, Adelasoye, an immigration lawyer and pastor of the Ark of Hope church in St Leonards, East Sussex, along with his accomplices contrived to marry 360 illegal immigrants, many of them Nigerians, to complete strangers. Armed with a marriage certificate, the immigrants were then able to hoodwink the Home Office into giving them a visa to stay in Britain as a ‘spouse’, with access to education, healthcare and benefits. The sham marriages were carried out at the Victorian parish church, where Reverend Brown married up to eight couples a day between 2005 and 2009.

Brown conducted the ceremonies at The Church of St Peter and St Paul between July 2005 and July 2009. Ninety couples were registered as living in one road and 52 in another. There were several brides and grooms from the same house, and one husband-to-be went under the name of ‘Felix Spaceman’.

A bride changed into her borrowed wedding gown in the vestry before the ceremony, then stuffed it back into a plastic bag afterwards, while a groom produced a ring that was far too small for his wife’s finger.

Nevertheless Brown, 61, protested his innocence, but he was convicted with the Nigerian immigration solicitor – whose clients paid up to £15,000 for a dodgy wedding – and a Ukrainian who supplied hard-up Eastern Europeans willing to marry for £3,000 cash. Michael Adelasoye, 50, a qualified immigration lawyer, found Africans who were desperate to stay in the UK after outstaying their visas. The court heard that 90 couples were registered as living in the same street. The Ukrainian, recruited the stooge brides and grooms from Hastings’s Eastern European community. Some wed several times.

Ten of the brides and grooms received police cautions, but the majority were never traced and are presumably still living in Britain. The three defendants denied conspiracy to breach immigration laws, but they were found guilty by a jury at Lewes Crown Court after a seven week trial. Brown, who is openly gay, also became the only vicar in 800 years to be convicted of failing to read out the banns – asking the congregation if they knew of ‘any just cause or impediment’ why two people may not marry.

Judge Richard Hayward adjourned sentencing to September 6 but warned the three, who all live in St Leonards, he was considering jail. He told them: ‘You have been convicted on very clear evidence of a serious offence.’ Adelasoye and Brown were released on conditional bail, and Buchak was remanded in custody.

The vicar walked from court without a word, but Adelasoye, who is a pastor of the Ark of Hope church in St Leonards, protested: ‘I don’t think it’s a fair verdict. God looks after the righteous.’ Later, the Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings, the Venerable Philip Jones, said he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by Brown’s betrayal.

He said: ‘We are particularly sorry for those who have been deceived and hurt by his actions. The church and the community are faced with a betrayal of trust on the part of Father Brown, who was a very trusted figure.’

He promised that churches would be more vigilant to fraud in the future, and said the Church of St Peter and St Paul was unlikely to be used for worship again after Brown’s tarnished tenure. Brown’s motivation remains unclear. Police believe the once respected priest threw away his career, his reputation and potentially his freedom to feather a nest for his retirement. But although they found £5,000 in cash at his home, this was not nearly as much as they would have expected if Brown’s sole desire was to make money, rather than to help immigrants.

The case, which police believe was part of an international multi-million pound scam, has once again exposed the lax regulations that have led to a booming racket in sham marriages over recent years.

Numerous attempts to curb the thousands of fake unions every year have been stymied by EU and human rights laws.

A total of 529 suspect marriages were reported to the Home Office in the 11 months to December last year – a rise of 54 per cent on 2008 levels.

Detective Inspector Andy Cummins, of the UK Border Agency, said: ‘This was the biggest operation of its kind we have come across, and the only one we know about where the vicar was entirely complicit.

‘As we investigated, we were all shocked as the scale of it emerged. The nearer he got to his retirement date, the more weddings he was doing.’ Immigration minister Damian Green said: ‘Britain is no longer a soft touch. We now have specialist teams of immigration and police officers working day in, day out, to tackle and prosecute people who commit this form of organised criminality.

‘We are determined to create a hostile environment which makes it harder than ever for illegal immigrants to come to the UK and put untold pressures on our public services.’

Politics / Scared Of Death Penalty: Chinese Drug Suspects Opt For Nigerian Trial by massach79: 5:51pm On Jul 30, 2010
The two Chinese citizens arrested in connection with unlawful importation of 450.4 kilogrammes of cocaine to Nigeria have begged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to try them in Nigeria as they may face death penalty in China if deported, a source told P.M.NEWS this morning.

Reacting, NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said this morning that the two Chinese citizens and their Nigerian clearing agent will all be prosecuted in Nigeria.

The suspects include Richard Wang, 62, an importer of textiles and shopping bags and Chiusen Fong, 54, a timber merchant as well as a Nigerian Alhaji Inua Mohammed, 56, who is a clearing agent.

NDLEA’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said in a statement this morning that the decision to arraign the suspects in the country have kept the Chinese in high spirits since the law in China stipulates capital punishment for drug trafficking.

The NDLEA boss said the agency is not considering extradition for now, adding that the suspects will be charged to court in Nigeria as soon as investigation was completed.

Meanwhile, more revelations have emerged about the consignment that was filled with drug. The clearing agent told NDLEA investigators that he was contacted by Richard Wang to clear the container and take it to Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, South West Nigeria.

He said: “I am a clearing agent. Richard Wang came to me to clear a container. He told me the container had cigarettes and gave me 3 million naira for the clearance”.

However, Fong, in his statement, told investigators that he gave Wang N5 million to clear the container. When Wang was arrested, he said that he was working for Chiusen Fong who lives in Kano. That was how they were all nabbed.

The seizure of 450.400kg of cocaine imported from Chile at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, agency sources revealed, was masterminded by an international drug syndicate that smuggles cocaine from South American countries to West Africa.

The anti-drug agency had kept tab on the consignment which originated from Chile and passed through Peru, Bolivia and Antwerp to Tin Can Island Port (TCIP).

According to Giade, “the drug was neatly concealed in customised floor wood inside a container which was cleared and taken to a private warehouse at Iganmu, Lagos”.

In June 2006, 14.2 metric tons of similar substance was intercepted at the same port.

Politics / Voters’ Register: It’s Now N84bn Not N74bn, Says Jega by massach79: 10:04am On Jul 29, 2010
NATIONAL Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, yesterday, said what the commission needed to compile a credible Voters Register was N84 billion and not N74 billion as he earlier said.

The amount, however, did not cover an additional N10 billion that the commission was seeking as hazard allowance for its staff who would conduct the election, which brought the total amount required by INEC to N84billion.

Addressing members of the Senate Committee on INEC at the National Assembly, Professor Jega, who was accompanied by all the national commissioners, warned that if the fund required for the compilation of the voters’ register was not made available by the second week of August, the task of compiling a new voter register would be very difficult.

The INEC chairman said the N74 billion would be used for the purchase of 120 Direct Capture Machines, voter education, allowances for staff and training of staff on the use of the machines.

He explained: “With regards to direct capture machine, we want the best machine which is laptop based and not hand held; which has a very good resolution camera and which has very good standard finger printing accessory and an extra power pack, in case of the battery running down. We also factored in some generating capabilities just in case everything failed and in our own country, you cannot guarantee anything. We have to take a lot of measures to see how we can improve on the situation.

Direct capturing machines

“Now if you take all these into consideration, the cost of the direct capturing machine alone – the unit cost from what we have got so far, and that is not using vendors, the unit cost is about $2000. If you calculate $2000 by 120,000 units of machine at $152 per unit, you will get about $240 million.

That alone gives you N36.8 billion just for the equipment alone. If you are going to go through the vendor which is an option we are trying to avoid, then you have to factor at least 30 percent profit margin, so that in itself raises the cost of the equipment to N55 billion.

“Then if you take the cost of the training, the cost of voter education which we have done, the logistical requirement in terms of transportation and also the allowances that had to be paid to the personnel whether they are for training purpose or for actual exercise, it comes to a lot of money. So from our own calculation, clearly we will need N74 billion. We realize that there was even an error in the calculation.

We have corrected it and made it available to the executive where we first made that.
“So we took all these things into consideration and, as I said, for purposes of planning, you have to use the highest figure. We would not say give us N55 billion and we run into hitches with the preparation with the direct suppliers.

“The best thing is to go direct to the manufacturers and that is the option we are pursuing and we are doing a lot of discussion on that. But we have to have the money just in case we cannot get the manufacturers we have to go with vendors. That is really how the cost element is. If N74 billion is allocated and in the end we can only spend N55 billion, it is saving for the government.”

Jega said the machines bought by Professor Maurice Iwu-led commission were substandard, adding that some of them had been given out to other organizations like the Nigerian Customs, Immigration and even staff of the commission as gift.

In a news item on the commission’s daily news bulletin, INEC said it would need an additional N10 billion as hazard allowance for its staff.

The bulletin stated: “Apart from the N74 billion required by the Commission to compile a fresh voters’ register and to provide for training and logistics, INEC will require another N10 billion to cover hazard and sundry allowances.”
It added that in the past, allowances for staff of the commission which are obligatory were glossed over by the commission.

Crime / Cele Prophet Killed Inside Own Church by massach79: 9:57am On Jul 29, 2010
A 54-year-old prophet / founder of Celestial Church of Christ, CCC, Messiah Parish, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, Prophet Olusola Oluwatuyi, was Tuesday afternoon, shot dead in his church during a meeting with a man, alleged to be a retired Police officer.

According to eye witnesses, the deceased, fondly called, Messiah by his members had informed the church’s shepherd Evangelist, Ojelade Oludayo of his meeting with the retired officer and one Mr. Olaifa and warned that he does not want to be disturbed.

It was reported that Olaifa was the first to exit the meeting, leaving the retired Commissioner and the cleric behind.

Not quite long after Olaifa left the said meeting, the sound of a gun shot was heard as the retired officer was seen hurrying out of the premises. But when members rushed to the scene, they found Messiah in a pool of his own blood.

An eye witness, Mrs. Titilayo Awofisayo said she was washing her clothes, in the church premises when she suddenly heard the gun shot.

‘’Our founder, Mr. Olaifa and a retired ACP held a meeting for two hours. Mr. Olaifa was the first person to leave while our founder and the ACP remained upstairs. Suddenly, I heard a gun shot but I never knew where it came from. As I was wondering about this, the retired Police officer came downstairs with his two hands in his pocket demanding that I should accompany him to a nearby hospital but, I told him I was not properly dressed and I called another member of the church, Jide Oguntola to accompany him. I was restless till they came back and I asked him if there was something wrong and he kept saying, ‘Messiah is my son’.

Immediately, I ran upstairs to see what happened but found our founder lying in a pool of his blood with a double barrel riffle and a revolver carefully placed on the table. I also found his two phones, office and car keys in the office.

Out of curiousity, I asked him what has happened and he responded that Prince (our founder) was fidgeting with the gun when it exploded.

Immediatly, I ran outside to alert other people who also rushed to the scene but to my astonishment, the ACP had escaped after he told the sympathisers he was going to invite the Police.

I pursued him and found him by his car as he told me he wanted to go and call the Police . But out of annoyance, I dragged him to the church so he can explain what transpired between him and Prince (our founder). “

The said retired officer has been arrestd by the police and taken to the Criminal Investigative Division, Panti in Lagos.
