gabbytabby: Petrol is not food and is an important commodity but not an essential commodity.
Is it possible to allow a country to go into bankruptcy on the strength of funding petrol. We do need to go back to basics and instead give support in form of equipment and tax incentives to agric businesses than for petrol. The cost of food is what needs to come down not petrol. It is myopic to assume petrol is not an essential commodity. Common sense should tell anyone that when petrol price increases, cost of transportation will increase. And when cost of transportation increases, price of goods will also increase. |

All the other African countries are no better than Nigeria except in electricity supply. Petrol is 14 naira per litre in Libya. How many African countries are infested with terrorists like Nigeria? Southafrica has hosted worldcup. Nigeria can't host worldcup in the next 50 years because they don't have infrastrutures to support it. |

HighTableVoice: You are neglecting the Banking Industry Impact on interest loans for those smes. Subsidy is a pure crime on our economy it should go so the funds can be redirected into more productive channels. Maybe hard to adjust to at first but in the long run it’s extremely beneficial Majority of smes are not financed by banks. Let subsidy go! At least, we will have something to use as a case study. |
Politics › Negative Effects Of Fuel Subsidy Removal by MasterJayJay(op): 4:22pm On May 31, 2023*. Modified: 4:41pm On May 31, 2023 |
Once subsidy is no longer paid for a commodity, the price will definitely increase. Petrol is very critical to the economy of Nigeria. Everyone will fill the negative impact directly or indirectly.
1. Increase in transportation: If you spend 500 naira daily for your transport, be prepared to spend times three of that.
2_ Increase in food prices: Food traders will increase their prices because they will be spending more on transportation.
3. Increase in cost of services: A country of 180 million is generating 5,000 megawatts of electricity. This is very poor. Small businesses are known as the livewire of a country. Most smes rely on generators powered by petrol for their production. They will definitely increase their prices to stay in business.
4. Some businesses may shutdown: Survival of the fittest. Some businesses may not cope and will have to shutdown.
5. No Discretionary income for low income earners.
6. Increase in house rent |
