PoliticsObi’s Candidacy “Non-Negotiable, If The Coalition Is To Succeed” Says Ononuju. by Masterstroke4(op): 7:59pm On Jun 02, 2025
Katch Ononuju, another stakeholder in the coalition, insisted that Peter Obi’s candidacy must be respected if the alliance is to succeed.

He confirmed that Obi has made up his mind to contest the 2027 presidency with Datti Baba-Ahmed once again.

If the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA) is registered, observers believe that Amaechi could lead the new party, while Atiku and Obi may seek the tickets of SDP and ADC, respectively.

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, used the opportunity of Amaechi’s birthday to warn coalition leaders about the dangers of repeating their 2015 political tactics.

“There are a number of you here who are expert conspirators, who know how to assemble coalitions and then take out governments, as you did to my party in 2015,” Dickson said.

Now 11 years down the line, poverty has been weaponised, and the challenges remain. My advice? Shine your eyes.

Although former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi were initially central to the coalition’s agenda, both men have reportedly held firm to their individual ambitions—particularly Obi, who is said to be insistent on running alongside his 2023 running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

A steering committee member within the coalition told The Guardian that Amaechi was being prepared as a fallback option.

“With the way the coalition is going, some of us have noticed the unyielding positions of Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi,” the source said.

“We’ve resolved to put Amaechi on the ready. After all, he came second in the APC presidential primary.”

The former Rivers State governor turned 60 on May 27 and used the occasion of his birthday lecture—themed “Weaponising Hunger”—to subtly test the waters for a 2027 run, insiders say.

During the event, Amaechi revealed that he had told President Bola Tinubu after the APC primaries that he would not back his administration.

“I informed him directly that I wouldn’t be part of his electioneering.
Two years later, I feel vindicated,” Amaechi stated.

PoliticsFG To Deploy 7 Million Smart Meters Across Nigeria To End Estimated Billing. by Masterstroke4(op): 11:50pm On Jun 01, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to deploy seven million smart electricity meters across the country through the Presidential Metering Initiative as part of efforts to eliminate estimated billing and revenue leakages in the power sector.

This was disclosed by Mrs. Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, in commemoration of the second year of President Tinubu’s administration.

Verheijen said the rollout of smart meters is a key component of the Tinubu administration’s strategy to improve the commercial viability of the electricity value chain, particularly the gas-to-power segment.

“There are a number of actions or interventions that we are taking to ensure that we improve the commercial viability of the gas-to-power value chain.”

“We are developing the policy and the frameworks that enable us to transition to a system that allows us to charge the cost of delivering electricity, and more importantly, to drive efficiencies in arriving at that cost,” she said.

According to Verheijen, part of the government’s broader power sector reform includes the resolution of legacy debts owed to generation companies and gas suppliers.

“We plan to clear the legacy debt with a mix of cash and promissory notes to ensure that the generation companies and the gas suppliers are also paid.”

She attributed the accumulated debt to the government’s previous inability to fund electricity subsidies and the poor revenue performance of electricity distribution companies (Discos).

“In addition to this, we are making sure that we improve revenue assurance by ensuring that most customers on the grid are metered.”

“With this, we can end estimated billing and ensure that we reduce collection losses so that customers who get electricity are paying customers,” she added.

In return for resolving outstanding debts, the government will require performance commitments from all players across the power value chain.

The Special Adviser also emphasized the need for stronger governance within the Discos, noting their central role in revenue collection and service delivery in the electricity supply chain.

She explained that regulatory frameworks would be used to ensure that the distribution companies have both the technical and financial capacity to deliver more reliable electricity to Nigerian homes and businesses.

Early this year, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) imposed fines totaling N628 million on eight electricity distribution companies, including Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ikeja Electric (IKEDC), for violating the capping regulations on estimated billing.

These penalties were calculated based on the volume of excessive billing and the duration of the infractions.

NERC emphasized that this enforcement action is part of its broader regulatory efforts to curb estimated billing abuse and accelerate the deployment of prepaid meters under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) and other initiatives.

Why I Disagreed With Atiku's Camp Over Vice President Slot - Peter Obi

According to a report by VANGUARD, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has finally addressed the speculation surrounding a potential political merger with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The rumors, which surfaced following reports that Atiku’s political camp offered Obi a vice-presidential slot in a proposed alliance, had sparked widespread debate and concern among Obi’s supporters.

In a statement reported by Vanguard, Obi firmly clarified his stance on the matter, emphasizing that his political mission has never been about securing titles or climbing the political hierarchy. Rather, he stressed that any discussion about coalition efforts must be rooted in shared values and a commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing socioeconomic challenges.

“The idea that I would accept a position just for political gain undermines everything I stand for,” Obi said, dismissing suggestions that he would agree to play a subordinate role in the proposed merger. “My coalition is against suffering, not for power. Politics should be about serving the people and solving their problems, not seeking positions,” he stated.

Obi’s remarks come amid growing tensions among his base, many of whom have rallied behind his message of reform, transparency, and people-centered governance. The idea of him stepping back into a vice-presidential role—as he did in 2019 when he ran alongside Atiku under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—was seen by many of his loyalists as a step backward.

Reaffirming his political philosophy, Obi explained that his motivation comes from a desire to alleviate poverty, tackle hunger, and improve access to healthcare for Nigerians. He also highlighted the importance of investing in the country’s youth, particularly through education.

“My concern is about the children of this country, their future, and their access to quality education,” Obi asserted. “That is what drives my political participation—not the ambition to hold office for its own sake.”

The statement appears to close the door, at least for now, on any formal partnership between Obi and Atiku. It also reinforces Obi’s position as a political figure focused more on policy and people than political positioning. For many of his supporters, Obi’s rejection of the vice-presidential offer is seen as a reaffirmation of his integrity and commitment to transformative leadership.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, questions about strategic alliances and coalitions will likely persist. However, Obi’s message is clear: any alliance must prioritize the well-being of Nigerians over personal or party interests.

PoliticsNobody Can Defeat Tinubu Without Peter Obi – Sam Amadi by Masterstroke4(op): 3:57pm On May 20, 2025
Sam Amadi, former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has claimed that nobody can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election with Mr Peter Obi.

Obi was the erstwhile presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election.

Amadi’s remark comes amid reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had offered Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party the vice-presidential slot in a proposed single-term coalition ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the former Anambra State Governor maintained that he is only interested in the coalition against hunger, poverty, and the bad state of healthcare and education in the country.

But in a post on X on Tuesday, Amadi, who is also Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, maintained that Obi is indispensable to whoever wants to defeat Tinubu comes 2027.

He said: “The truth is that without @PeterObi there is no way anyone can defeat Tinubu. What this truth implies is for you to figure out. This explains the melancholy and aggression on this street.

“The circle can be squared with respect and deep good faith.”

PoliticsPeter Obi Is Set To Declare His 2027 Presidential Bid As A Leading Candidate by Masterstroke4(op): 3:15pm On May 20, 2025
Peter Obi is set to declare his 2027 presidential bid as a leading candidate, rejecting any vice-presidential role, following stalled coalition talks with Atiku.

Atiku Abubakar has moved to advance alliance discussions with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after coalition talks with Obi’s camp collapsed Both Obi and Atiku’s camps deny reports of a joint ticket, emphasising their commitment to forming a broad coalition focused on addressing Nigeria’s key challenges.

Amid mounting political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, sources indicate that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, is set to declare his own presidential bid, this time as the leading contender without any deputy role.

This development coincides with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar entering into alliance talks with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the collapse of earlier coalition talks with Obi’s camp.

Source: Twitter Obi poised to declare presidential ambition soon Multiple sources confirmed that Obi is preparing to formally announce his 2027 presidential candidacy and is expected to reveal the political platform he will run on in the coming days.

“Peter Obi will not run as anyone’s running mate. He led a three-day meeting with Atiku’s team, and they could not agree on the vice-presidential offer.” “Within the week, he will present himself as a presidential contender and may unveil his party platform.” Atiku advances talks with African Democratic Congress Following stalled coalition talks with Obi, Atiku is reportedly in advanced discussions with the ADC, led by Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, with plans to possibly run under its banner, Guardian reported. Okorie added that ADC is undergoing a leadership shakeup, absorbing former Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) figures, and is shaping up to be part of a three-horse race for 2027.

Chief Nwosu confirmed the party has been approached by politicians but deferred official comment on Atiku’s plans, citing the upcoming primary and national convention. South-East opposition to Obi accepting deputy role Political observers argue that any suggestion of Obi accepting a vice-presidential slot under Atiku would face stiff resistance from the South-East and Obi’s supporters, who view his 2023 presidential run as a milestone for Igbo political assertion.

Zoning considerations and regional political dynamics suggest that the South-East desires a presidential candidate from the region, and a secondary role for Obi would diminish the region’s influence, Leadership reported. Obi, Atiku's camps deny reports of joint ticket With their joint effort to defeat President Tinubu in 2027 unsuccessful, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have now taken independent actions.
Atiku’s camp dismissed media reports suggesting a joint presidential ticket for 2027 as rumours designed to create division. Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, described the reports as speculative and insisted both leaders remain committed to forming a broad coalition to oust President Bola Tinubu.
Obi’s spokesman, Nana Kazaure, emphasised: “There is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever. Our objective is to unite against bad governance, corruption, hunger, and poverty—not to engage in power struggles.” Obi focuses on coalition against Nigeria’s challenges Responding to questions about the alleged vice-presidential offer, Obi stated that his priority is a coalition focused on tackling Nigeria’s pressing problems.

“I am in a coalition against hunger, poverty, and the poor state of health and education. Politics is not about position; it is about doing the right thing," he said. Obi’s comments reinforce his commitment to the coalition’s mission rather than personal political ambition. Coalition efforts continue amid political tension Atiku’s media adviser reiterated that opposition leaders are diligently working to build a unified platform for 2027, despite resistance from PDP governors. “Power belongs to the people, and the people are powering this coalition process,” he said.

The coming weeks are expected to see intensified activity as candidates formalise their intentions and coalitions solidify ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2027 elections. 2027 election: "No one can stop Tinubu": Arewa Forum declares Previously, Legit.ng reported that elder statesman and founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the most formidable candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

PoliticsProfessor Convicted Of Election Rigging For Akpabio Release Without Serving Jail by Masterstroke4(op): 4:20am On May 14, 2025
Professor convicted for rigging election for Akpabio walks free instead of serving jail term

Peter Ogban, the disgraced Nigerian professor convicted and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for rigging a 2019 senatorial election for the country’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has been walking free instead of serving his jail term.

Many Nigerians, including journalists, erroneously think Mr Ogban has served or is still serving his jail term.

Mr Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a strong ally of President Bola Tinubu.

The Court of Appeal, Calabar, on 30 April, upheld the lower court conviction and the three-year jail term for Mr Ogban, a professor of soil science at the University of Calabar and a returning officer in the 2019 general elections in Akwa Ibom North-West District.

A State High Court in Uyo, on 25 March 2021, found Mr Ogban guilty of announcing fake election results in two local government areas—Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo—in Mr Akpabio’s favour and sentenced him to jail the same day.

Mr Ogban was taken from the courtroom in Uyo to a federal prison in Ikot Ekpene, still in Akwa Ibom, to serve his prison term.

However, the professor spent only about four months in prison as another judge, Pius Idiong of the State High Court, Ikot Ekpene, granted him bail on 12 July 2021, despite the opposition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which prosecuted the professor.

The professor was freed on bail while pursuing his appeal against his conviction and sentence by the lower court.

The Court of Appeal judgement, which upheld Mr Ogban’s conviction and jail term, was delivered virtually.

“The officials of the Nigerian prisons ought to have made sure Prof Ogban was present in the courtroom during that judgement, and they should have taken him straight to Ikot Ekpene prisons immediately after the judgement,” he said.

A lawyer, identified by Truecaller App as Eddy, a member of the Kanu G. Agabi & Associates, admitted to PREMIUM TIMES on Monday that the convicted professor ought to be in jail but said she did not know his exact location “at the moment.”

Richard Metong, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Correctional Service in Akwa Ibom, said he did not know if Mr Ogban was in any of the prison facilities in Akwa Ibom. He asked our reporter to give him time to run a check, but did not call back or respond to further calls from our reporter.

How jailed professor got his ‘freedom’
Clement Onwuenwunor was the INEC lawyer during the hearing of Mr Ogban’s bail application, while Kanu Agabi, SAN, represented the professor.

Mr Agabi claimed Mr Ogban had high blood pressure and tuberculosis.

According to a court document seen by PREMIUM TIMES, he pleaded with the court to grant his client bail because of ill health, while he was about to go to the Court of Appeal to challenge his conviction and sentence.

He argued that the professor may suffer injustice if he remained in prison and the Court of Appeal eventually reduced his sentence, gave him an option of a fine, or discharged and acquitted him, an argument Mr Idiong upheld in his ruling on the bail application.

According to the court document, the INEC lawyer, Mr Onwuenwunor, in his argument, said the professor’s claim that he was ill, neither qualified for an exceptional circumstance nor an unusual reason for him to be granted bail. He said what the Supreme Court has qualified as such exceptional circumstance or unusual reason is where the convict’s ailment cannot be treated in the prison and the prison authorities are unable to arrange for such treatment outside the prison facility.

Mr Idiong said in his ruling, “The Court agrees with the senior learned counsel (Agabi) that it is a possibility that the appeal may be allowed and the applicant (Ogban) discharged and acquitted.

“It is also possible that the sentence imposed on the applicant by the trial court may, at the end of the day, be reduced. At the end, the appellate court may also resolve to give the applicant an option of a fine in count 2 of the charge. And above all, the applicant may be cautioned and discharged by the appellate court.”

In addition, the judge ruled that “This court holds the view that although the applicant’s so-called health conditions and medical report cannot constitute such an exceptional circumstance, he has nonetheless made out a case to warrant being granted a temporary reprieve.”

According to a court document seen by our reporter, Mr Agabi is going to the Supreme Court to challenge the Court of Appeal’s judgement affirming Mr Ogban’s conviction and sentence for election fraud.

Another professor jailed for election fraud, but also enjoying freedom
Another professor, Ignatius Uduk, was recently jailed by a State High Court in Uyo for election fraud.

Mr Uduk, a professor of Human Kinetics in the Department of Physical and Health Education at the University of Uyo, was jailed for three years.

INEC prosecuted him on three charges: announcement of false election results, publication of false results, and perjury during the 2019 general elections in Essien Udim State Constituency, where he served as INEC’s collation and returning officer.

The professor falsified the election results to the advantage of the APC candidate, Nse Ntuen, who was then an ally of Mr Akpabio.

However, Mr Uduk was recently granted bail by a State High Court in Uyo.

Owerri records first International flight as Air Peace airlifts pilgrims to Saudi Arabia

History was made on the night of May 9, 2025, as the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, witnessed its first-ever international flight since inception.

The landmark event was the departure of the inaugural 2025 Hajj flight, operated by Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace.

Making the feat even more remarkable was the deployment of the wide-body Boeing 777-300 aircraft, the first time such a large aircraft landed on the Owerri airport runway.

This demonstrated the airport’s enhanced capacity and readiness to handle international operations of global standards.

A total of 315 pilgrims were airlifted on the non-stop inaugural flight from Owerri to Medina, Saudi Arabia, marking a new chapter for the South-East region in religious tourism and international connectivity.

This historic development not only represents a significant milestone for the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport but also underscores Nigeria’s growing aviation capabilities in expanding international operations across all geopolitical zones.

Kashim Shettima, the Vice President of Nigeria, personally flagged off the flight, commending Hope Uzodinma, Imo State Governor, for promoting religious tolerance and inclusiveness in the state. In his address, the Vice President encouraged the pilgrims to uphold Nigerian values and serve as true ambassadors of the nation while in the Holy Land.

He emphasised that the airport would also support the airlift of Christian pilgrims in future exercises, further positioning Owerri as a hub for religious and international travel.

Also present at the historic event was Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, alongside other dignitaries and religious leaders from across the country, lending credence to the unity and national significance of the occasion.

Air Peace in a statement said the successful flight also comes as a strong rebuttal to recent rumors suggesting the suspension of Air Peace from Hajj operations.

“Not only has the airline continued to uphold its reputation as a dependable partner in national service, but it has also now inaugurated the 2025 Hajj operations from a new departure city, Owerri.

“With this development, Air Peace and the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport have entered the annals of history, signaling a new era of regional integration, religious harmony, and aviation excellence in Nigeria,” the airline said in a statement.

PoliticsEnugu State Power Sector Revolution: Transforming The Electricity Market. by Masterstroke4(op): 8:55am On May 10, 2025
How Enugu State Is Transforming Electricity Market, A Role Model For Other States.

Enugu is gradually rewriting Nigeria’s electricity story, showing the rest of the country how to turn the ink of constitutional amendment into energy to power socio-economic development.

Nigeria’s power sector has lurched from one crisis to another for more than three decades—chronic generation shortfalls, ageing transmission lines, opaque tariffs, and a regulatory environment many investors found impenetrable.
Peak demand now regularly exceeds 19 GW, yet available capacity hovers around 4–5 GW, forcing households and businesses to rely on costly self-generation. Analysts have long argued that only a disruptive intervention, coupled with decentralised solutions, could lift the country out of this quagmire.
That intervention arrived in March 2023, when the 9th National Assembly passed—and ex-President Muhammadu Buhari signed—a constitutional amendment that moved electricity from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent Legislative List.

For the first time, states were empowered to enact their own electricity laws, issue licences, and regulate intra-state markets. Enugu state governor, Mr Peter Mbah, looked at a new legal opportunity and didn’t file it away for some future administration to deal with. For Enugu, it was a lifeline, and Governor Peter Mbah grabbed it with both hands. How did a state that shared in Nigeria’s decades‑old power malaise flip the script so fast?

Within three months of his tenure, Governor Mbah’s administration drafted and passed a law many believed would take years to materialise. The Enugu State Electricity Bill was swiftly signed into law on September 1, 2023, giving birth to the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission—EERC. With this, the State assumed the authority to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within its boundaries. And in constituting the Commission, Governor Mbah headhunted even outside the state, for very experienced hands in the industry.

This, in a historic move, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) commenced the process of delegating full oversight to a subnational authority for the first time in the country’s history. setting the pace, Enugu officially started taking control of its electricity market on April 22, 2024. By October, the transition was complete. Enugu became the first Nigerian State to own its power destiny from plug to pole, a testament to the speed and efficiency of the State’s transformation.

This was no mere bureaucratic handover. It was the beginning of a redefinition of power in the most literal sense. The EERC swiftly issued interim distribution license, processed independent power generation applications, and resolved consumer complaints with a speed rarely seen in Nigeria’s public service.

They licensed Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, a new vehicle created by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), to handle intra-state power delivery. Then came the generation licenses—10 megawatts for Fedikore Limited and another 5 megawatts for Tempo Power Solutions. Just like that, 15MW of embedded generation capacity was on the table, and several more applications are in the pipeline.

“This was never about symbolism,” said EERC Chair Chijioke Okonkwo. “Investors needed regulatory certainty, consumers needed speed, and the State needed power.” Chijioke likes to rattle off the scoreboard: two-generation licences, one interim distribution licence and “over 60 customer complaints resolved” in half a year. Tempo Power Solutions Executive Chairman Collins Kalabare is even more direct: “The process is seamless—you don’t need to know anybody.”

However, policy and licensing are just the beginning of the change. The real transformation is in the people—the heart of the story. In Maryland, a mechanic like Obinna Obikwu no longer closes shop early due to power outages. “Honestly, outages are no longer like before now,” says Obikwu. “We suffered under EEDC, but since the new Commission took charge, the difference is being gradually felt. At least, they resolve your complaints.” His neighbour, Loveday Ikpeama, agrees—though he still pleads for prepaid meters so the billing can catch up with the service. Ikpeama was also elated that the days of bribery for connection were over. The EERC’s processes—licensing, tariffs, complaint resolution—are online, visible, and, most importantly, trusted.

In Coal Camp, Abakpa, Awkunanaw, hope is rising.
In the nooks and crannies, power solutions are being created. The relief and joy felt by the residents of Enugu are palpable. But even more fundamental is the hope that wells up in them by that with the continued interest and influx by investors in the electricity sector, the challenges of power poverty that debilitated creativity and enterprise, will soon be a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, the reasons the Enugu State electricity market is attractive to investors were aptly captured by the Exective Director of Tempo Power, Mr Collins Kalabare, during the aforementioned issuance of 5MW power generation license to the company. He was full of praise for the EERC for running a professional, transparent, and independent system where investors do not need to know anybody to get things done fast.

“I must appreciate the EERC for the professional, business-minded and openness of their processes and operations. The process is seamless and you do not need to known anybody. EERC is indeed working according to the vision and speed of Gov Peter Mbah, who we have learnt is in a hurry to develop and make Enugu State economy grow and uplift the general status of residents and businesses,” he stated.

The state government isn’t leaving it all to regulation. It’s pairing reform with enablers: roads to industrial clusters are being paved and upgraded. Security patrols have been strengthened to protect infrastructure. The government is working to identify anchor loads—industrial or commercial users who can act as stable off-takers to make new-generation projects bankable. They’re even addressing issues like unfair billing, as seen in recent directives to Mainpower about capping advance connection charges and curbing arbitrary estimated billing.

The battle between regulators and big technology companies is intensifying, with fines now reaching eye-watering…

Of course, challenges remain. Gas supply is not guaranteed, especially with FX volatility and pipeline vandalism, which are still an ever-present threat. Legacy debts from EEDC need to be cleaned up. And EERC, though nimble, is small—just 20 staff members managing an entire market. Plans are underway to scale that up, but the gap is real. Still, these are the problems of a market in motion, not one stuck in stasis.

The broader picture is stunning. Enugu isn’t just electrifying its communities—it’s lighting up a path for others. Lagos, Edo, and Kaduna are watching. The federal government is watching.
Investors, who once wouldn’t touch Nigeria’s power sector with a ten-foot pole, are now flying into Akanu Ibiam International Airport with feasibility studies in their backpacks. Enugu’s success is not just a local triumph but a beacon of hope for the entire nation, showing that the energy sector can be transformed with the right policies and determination. This potential for Enugu’s model to be replicated in other states should make the citizens feel hopeful for the future of Nigeria’s energy sector.

This is more than policy. It’s a culture shift. For a generation raised to treat “light” as a luxury, there’s something poetic about being able to charge your phone without stress, store food without fear of spoilage, and sleep without the throb of an old diesel generator in your ear.

And that’s perhaps the most important thing: hope is returning—slowly, cautiously, but tangibly. People are beginning to believe not just that the government can change things—but that it already has. For the first time in a long time, the average Enugu resident isn’t talking about what’s broken. They’re talking about what’s next—meters, mini-grids, and job openings in the growing energy sector.

That shift in conversation—from despair to demand, from helplessness to expectation—is the, ruest sign that the power sector in Enugu isn’t just changing voltage levels. It’s changing lives. And maybe, just maybe, it’s changing the story of Nigeria itself. The transformation happening in Enugu State is not just infrastructural—it’s emotional, cultural, and even psychological. It’s the kind of change you don’t see in policies or project milestones but in how people carry themselves after dusk, in the conversations overheard in neighbourhood kiosks, and in how businesses now open with expectation and hope rather than anxiety. It’s in the growing silence—the beautiful silence—where the rattle of generators is now giving way.

Enugu hasn’t solved Nigeria’s electricity crisis, but it has proved that a bold governor, a nimble law and a fearless regulator can redraw the power map in real-time. If Fedikore’s turbines spin on schedule and Tempo’s generators and other investors that applied follow suit, megawatt by megawatisthen the soft glow now draping the urban neighbourhoods, could soon stretch to villages that have never known anything but kerosene lamps—and maybe, just maybe, show the rest of the country how to turn constitutional ink into light.

Enugu’s electricity story is still in Act I, but the plot twists already show what becomes possible when constitutional change meets gubernatorial urgency. By marrying swift law-ma

Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba, announced in Owerri: “As parts of the ceremony, those heading to this year’s Hajj from Imo State will be lifted direct from Owerri to their destination.”

He added that Christian pilgrims will depart for the Holy Land from the airport in June 2025. The Air Peace flight, carrying 315 Hajj pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa States, will be attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries, including political and religious leaders and industry captains.

Emelumba expressed optimism about the airport’s new status: “Now that Imo airport will be on call for international flights, it would make it easier for would be investors from any part of the world to access Imo State for businesses.”

He noted that Imo’s diaspora community would benefit from direct flights, avoiding the inconvenience of transiting through other airports like Port Harcourt or Lagos. The upgrades, he said, reflect Uzodimma’s efforts to boost Imo’s economy.

PoliticsObi to Tinubu: Suspend whatever you are doing in France, Nigeria is insecure by Masterstroke4(op): 9:47am On Apr 16, 2025
Mr. President, Domestic problems Beacons.

I am compelled at this time in our lives as a nation to call on our retreating President's attention to the security challenges at home, which entails that he immediately suspend his ongoing retreat in a foreign land and come home to address the overwhelming security situation across the country.

This urgent call has become necessary following the rising incidents of crimes and criminalities all over Nigeria with an apparent absence of governance.

In the 2 weeks you have been away, over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity across Nigeria, especially in Plateau and Zamfara states.

The repeated pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta, further reflect a nation in distress.

In the North East, Borno state leaders are bemoaning the return of insurgency with troops and civilians being killed randomly. In the South East, the story is the same: killings and abduction.

Amid all these, the CEO of the troubling company called Nigeria is retreating far away land in France from the Company's headquarters.

The primary duty of any government is securing the lives and property of its citizens and one wonders the type of retreat going on in another country where peace has been secured by their leaders while blood continues to flow in our country.

The fight for a better Nigeria is not about individuals; it is about ensuring that every citizen can see, feel, and benefit from the policies and decisions of those in power.

I, therefore like to urge Mr President to quickly suspend whatever he is doing in France and rush home to take responsibility by addressing these disturbing issues.

That is the new Nigeria that the nation seeks.

A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO

Cally Air Nigeria: Cross River To Take Delivery Of New State-Owned Aircraft Next Month — Gov Otu
Bassey.

The Cross River State Government has revealed that it will take delivery of two new aircraft in March as part of plans to boost the state airline.

Gov Bassey Otu, who disclosed this at a media parley with select journalists in Calabar on Monday night, said plans to resuscitate the state airline were to provide an alternative transportation system as well as a wonderful traveling experience for residents and visitors to the state.

While bemoaning that residents and visitors alike to the state were having trouble flying into the state due to flight delays and cancellations, he noted that all this would change when Calli Air was back in the air.

He said, “ We have worked on the engines of the other aircraft we have and are also in the process of receiving two additional ones by March.

“We are working to have the biggest airline in the country and ultimately solve the Calabar route challenge. We are hoping to fly beyond Nigeria when this starts,” he stated.

He further noted that, given the cost of fuel and the state of federal roads in Cross River, his administration is on the verge of developing the rail system.

The governor disclosed that the Obudu cargo and passenger airport was receiving priority attention to provide an alternative to the flying public.

“This brings us to the reason why we will soon be launching the state transport master policy.,” he said.

Niger Republic Rejects ECOWAS Passport, Bars Nigerians From Entry The Country

The Republic of Niger has implemented new restrictions on Nigerians travelling with the ECOWAS passport, now barring entry for those with the travel document.

The move is coming after Niger, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, recently withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

While Niger maintains an open border with Nigeria, new immigration measures are being enforced at key border crossings, including Illela in Nigeria and Konni in Niger.

Cross-border traders and commuters are now facing significant challenges as the Nigerien authorities no longer recognise the ECOWAS passport as a valid travel document.

In a phone interview with an immigration officer at the Jibia/Magama Border in Katsina State late Tuesday, the officer who pleaded anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the issue, confirmed that Nigerien authorities had begun enforcing the ban.

“They no longer recognise Nigerians travelling into Niger Republic holding the ECOWAS Travel Certificate (ETC) or ECOWAS passport as of this morning (Tuesday),” he said.

The officer also mentioned that Nigerian immigration authorities are not yet applying the same restrictions to Nigerien citizens, waiting for further directives from higher authorities to fully implement the measures.

The ECOWAS Travel Certificate (ETC) and ECOWAS passport are travel documents that allow holders to move freely among the member countries of ECOWAS.

Although no official communication from the Nigerien government yet, affected travellers fear that the situation could worsen, disrupting trade and movement across the border.

When contacted on Monday, the Head of Communication ECOWAS Commission, Joel Ahofodji, said the regional bloc was unaware of Niger Republic’s policy to bar ECOWAS passport holders.

Burkina Faso Unveils Its First Locally Made Electric Car

Burkina Faso has achieved a groundbreaking milestone with the launch of its first electric car, developed entirely by the Burkinabe car manufacturer ITAOUA. This innovative vehicle, created using local resources and expertise, showcases the nation’s growing industrial and technological capabilities.

With a 30 minute charging time and a range of 330 kilometers (205 miles), the car is set to transform transportation in Burkina Faso and beyond.

This achievement highlights the determination and ingenuity of Burkinabe engineers, designers, and workers. It represents a significant step towards industrial independence for a country that, like many in Africa, has long relied on imported vehicles.

ITAOUA’s electric car is a proud symbol of Burkina Faso’s ability to produce world-class technology locally.

Notably, the car’s efficiency positions it as a game-changer. Its impressive range and minimal energy consumption make it ideal for both urban and rural settings.

As the global shift toward sustainable energy continues, ITAOUA’s innovation puts Burkina Faso on the map as a leader in green technology.

The impact of this innovation extends far beyond transportation. It is expected to generate thousands of jobs in manufacturing, sales, maintenance, and renewable energy sectors.

By fostering local expertise and advancing skills in the auto industry, it will pave the way for further economic development.

Furthermore, ITAOUA’s success story serves as an inspiration for young Burkinabe entrepreneurs and innovators, proving that vision and perseverance can achieve remarkable results.

In addition to its economic benefits, the electric car underscores Burkina Faso’s commitment to sustainability. By reducing dependence on imported cars and fossil fuels, the country is not only cutting its carbon footprint but also conserving foreign exchange reserves.

As the car gains traction, it has the potential to become a valuable export, further boosting the nation’s economy.

Burkina Faso’s recent progress across sectors like agriculture, health, and education demonstrates its capacity to overcome challenges and achieve significant advancements. The introduction of ITAOUA’s electric car reinforces the country’s position as a pioneer in innovation and self-sufficiency.

This homegrown electric car is more than a technological achievement – it is a symbol of hope, progress, and the bright future of Burkina Faso.
ITAOUA’s innovation inspires not only the nation but also other countries to embrace sustainability and invest in local talent.

With this success, Burkina Faso proves that with determination, vision, and unity, any challenge can be transformed into an opportunity.

BREAKING: DSS Raids Kano FM Stations In Search Of #EndBadGovernance Press Conference Organisers, Addresses Of Victims' Parents.

At the press conference, families of victims killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests urged the government and police authorities to accept responsibility for the loss of innocent lives and provide justice and compensation.

Security personnel in Kano State have been cracking down on FM stations, searching for journalists who dared to cover a press conference held by the parents of victims of police brutality during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

These protests, which took place last August, aimed to draw attention to the struggles faced by Nigerians, including bad governance, economic hardship, and other pressing challenges.

However, SaharaReporters learnt that personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), also known as State Security Service (SSS) have been looking for the addresses of the parents and the details of the organisers of the press conference.

At the press conference, families of victims killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests urged the government and police authorities to accept responsibility for the loss of innocent lives and provide justice and compensation.

The press conference was organised by the Victims Support Initiative Nigeria (VSIN) on Monday in Kano, where bereaved families shared their experiences, calling for accountability for what they termed reckless actions by law enforcement officers during the demonstrations.

One of the journalists visited by the security personnel said “they came to our radio station because on Monday we carried the story about the grievances of the parents of those killed by the police during the August protest”.

“They were asking us about the organisers of the press conference and the details of the parents who spoke at the press conference,” the journalist added.

At the press conference, Malam Yahya Ibrahim, whose son was killed during the protest, urged President Bola Tinubu to establish an independent and impartial inquiry in the killing of their children.

“Some of our sons and daughters were not even part of the protest but were killed because of excessive force used by the police. We are ready to provide all the information and evidence,” he said.

Families Of #EndBadGovernance Protesters Killed Or Injured By Police Demand Justice, Compensation From Nigerian Govt
Yahya Ibrahim, who lost his five-year-old son to a stray bullet in their family compound, spoke emotionally on behalf of the families.

“My son was just playing in the compound when a stray bullet cut his life short. This was not an accident but a failure of governance and accountability. We demand justice for all innocent lives lost,” he said.

The VSIN revealed that over 50 families across the country have reported similar tragic losses linked to the protests, highlighting a pattern of alleged excessive force by security operatives.

Fatima Yusuf, the coordinator of VSIN, urged the government to set up an independent judicial panel to investigate the incidents and ensure compensation for the victims’ families.

“These families deserve justice, not silence. The lives lost during the protests are a reminder of the systemic failures we need to fix as a nation,” she said.

“My son was just a little boy playing in our compound. He was too young to even understand what a protest meant, yet a policeman’s bullet took his life,” Ibrahim said, his voice heavy with grief.

“The Inspector General’s denial of this tragedy only adds to our pain. It’s a stark reminder of how accountability is missing.”

The families called on the government to thoroughly investigate the killings and hold officers who misused firearms accountable.

They also pressed for financial compensation for those who lost loved ones or suffered life-altering injuries.

Ibrahim explained how the lack of justice has worsened their anguish, leaving many families without closure.

“We won’t stop fighting for justice until those responsible face the consequences,” he vowed.

However, they appeal for the government to address the victims’ grievances and ensure such tragedies never happen again.

Notably, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) made similar claims, but the police haven't targeted them.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), called out the Nigerian police for what he described as a double standard.

If the police are demanding that Amnesty International retract its reports and issue a public apology, Sowore noted they should also extend the same demand to NHRC.

The human rights activist made this statement in response to reports that the Nigerian police had written to Amnesty International, asking the organisation to apologise and retract its report.

The report in question alleges that police used live ammunition at close range, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 people during protests in several states, including Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Niger.

Amnesty International had said the police used live ammunition at close range, killing at least 24 people during #EndBadGovernance protests in Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Niger states.

The organisation said some victims were shot in the head or torso, while others were suffocated by teargas.

“People in Nigeria witnessed unbelievable lawlessness as security personnel fired live ammunition at peaceful protests,” Amnesty International Nigeria’s Director, Isa Sanusi, said.

“The death toll could be higher than 24 because of the authorities’ desperate efforts to cover up the atrocities.

FG Reveals That Tax Reform Bills Will Be Passed Into Law By First Quarter Of 2025.

The federal government has announced that the National Assembly will pass the controversial tax reform bills into law by the end of the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

The disclosure was made by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms over the weekend.

He said the implementation of the tax reform bills will commence in July 2025.

President Bola Tinubu submitted the four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 13, 2024, amidst criticism from leaders, particularly from those who labelled the bills as anti-north.

However, the bills recently received the backing of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), which also proposed a new “equitable” sharing formula for Value Added Tax (VAT).

“I need to talk about the tax reforms. Part of the expectation is we expect the tax reforms to be approved, particularly the tax reform bills in 2025.

“Our expectation is before the end of Q1 and therefore, we can give notice to taxpayers to prepare themselves with capacity and begin to implement around 1st of July,” he said.
On the removal of fuel subsidy, Oyedele said that the decision was crucial towards economic reform.

“Removing subsidies is the best decision we made as a country. And we can now say that for once, subsidy is gone.

PoliticsRecently Dissolved Edo State Electoral Body (EDSIEC) Sues Gov. Monday Okpebholo by Masterstroke4(op): 12:20pm On Jan 20, 2025
Members of the recently dissolved Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) have filed a ₦619 million lawsuit against Governor Monday Okpebholo, alleging their removal violated constitutional provisions guaranteeing their tenure.

The case, filed at the National Industrial Court in Benin City, challenges the legality of the December 2024 announcement that dissolved the commission before the expiration of its members’ five-year tenure.

The claimants, led by Justice James Oyomire (retd), argue that their removal contravenes the 1999 Constitution and the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, which ensure their tenure through March 2027.

They contend none of the statutory conditions for dismissal—such as incapacity or misconduct—applies to them.

“The claimants herein are members of EDSIEC, which was constituted by the Edo State Government vide the ‘Government Special Announcement’ dated and issued on March 21, 2022,” Oyomire said in an affidavit.

He added: “By the Constitution and the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law and the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission Establishment (Re-enactment) Law, 2012 (as amended), members of EDSIEC as presently constituted can be removed from office only on the ground of ‘inability to discharge the functions of the office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause or for misconduct).

“I also know and state that none of the claimants is incapacitated and thereby becomes unable to discharge the functions of his office.

“In fact, every one of the claimants is hale and hearty, properly fit physically, mentally, and psychologically; and each of the claimants continues to perform the functions of our respective offices as stipulated by the Constitution and the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law and the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission Establishment (Re-enactment) Law, 2012 (as amended).”

The dissolved commission members are seeking ₦484.9 million in unpaid emoluments, ₦100 million in aggravated damages, and ₦35 million in legal fees. They also demand a court declaration voiding the dissolution and reinstating them to their positions.

Governor Okpebholo, the state’s attorney-general, and the Edo State House of Assembly are named as defendants in the suit.
The court has yet to fix a hearing date for the matter.

Nigeria’s ‘Terrible Government Destroys Lives’; I Don’t Want That For Britain - Kemi Badenoch

The Conservative Party leader in the United Kingdom, Kemi Badenoch, has expressed concerns about the consequences of “terrible governments” like Nigeria’s and vowed to prevent such outcomes in Britain.

Badenoch made these remarks on Thursday while delivering her first speech of the year at an event organised by Onward, a British think tank focused on economic and social issues.

Highlighting the need for systemic reform and emphasising trust in the Conservative Party, Badenoch drew parallels between Nigeria’s governance failures and potential risks for the UK if critical changes are not made.

“And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it,” Badenoch said during her speech.

“I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.
“I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation.

“I came back to the UK aged 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life.

“So I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here.”

However, this is not the first time the Conservative Party leader has taken a swipe at Nigeria. Tribune Online reports that Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, criticised her a few weeks ago for denigrating her country of origin.

Badenoch, who was born in the UK but was largely raised in Nigeria, has often spoken about the challenges of growing up in a country marked by corruption and insecurity.

The operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has on Thursday January 16th, 2025, uncovered a Yahoo academy in Benin city, Edo State, where young Nigerians are undergoing training in the act of internet fraud.

During the raid, the anti- graft agency arrested 25 suspected internet fraudsters in the cybercrimes training centre

The suspects’ arrest at their hideout was triggered by credible intelligence that indicated the apartment being used as a yahoo academy or training school for internet-related fraud and other fraudulent activities.

Items recovered from the suspects include six exotic cars, laptops and phones.
The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL)through its Maritime Security Unit , has sought collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of concerted efforts to combat transnational fraud and to check fraudulent malpractices in the maritime sector.

This call was made in Lagos on Friday, January 17, 2025 when Mr. Ademola Olude, Criminal Intelligence Officer from the Maritime Security Unit of INTERPOL, led a delegation including four members from Ghana on a courtesy visit to the acting Zonal Director, Lagos Directorate of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE1 Michael Wetkas.

Olude, who commended the EFCC for its vigorous corruption-fighting efforts, stressed that the visit was to seek areas of collaboration to combat transnational crimes that are perpetrated across borders.

“The Maritime Security Unit of the INTERPOL is tasked with implementing a project called Agwe, a codename for the project aimed at providing capacity-building among West African member countries, particularly in the areas of investigations and exchange of information in the maritime domain,” he said.

He noted that the project is running in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Togo, The Gambia, and Benin Republic.

“We have partnership with 10 different countries in Africa, including Nigeria, and our aim is to reinforce collaboration to ensure maritime security, and we are willing to assist the EFCC in matters relating to border crimes,” he said.

In his response, Wetkas appreciated the delegation for the visit and stressed that the EFCC remained resolute in its fight against all forms of economic and financial crimes, and placed premium value on collaboration with fellow law enforcement agencies.

“We are not relenting in our efforts to rid the country of corruption, particularly cybercrime, which has resulted in many internet fraudsters fleeing to neighbouring countries, and so this makes the need to strengthen collaboration across borders more imperative,” he said.

He further reinforced the Commission’s willingness to partner with the INTERPOL to take the fight against corruption across the West African region.

PoliticsDangote, Over 200 Firms Abandon Nigeria's National Grid Amid Persistent Outages by Masterstroke4(op): 3:45pm On Jan 16, 2025
Major firms in Nigeria have dumped the nation's power-generating companies over the constant power outages associated with the national grid.

Major firms in Nigeria have abandoned their power distribution companies due to constant power outages
The recurring grid collapses are attributed to ageing facilities, lack of maintenance, and vandalization of power facilities
Dangote Industries, 249 firms collectively produce over 6,500 MW, surpassing the national grid's output

The firms which include Dangote group, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Total and about 250 manufacturers and academic institutions have abandoned the national grid to generate their electricity.

The recurring incidence of grid collapse is attributed to ageing facilities, lack of maintenance, inadequate investment in the power sector and vandalization of power facilities.

This constant collapse has led to disruption of business activities and delays in healthcare services.

Nigeria's faltering national grid
Nigeria has faced recurring power grid failures, with 12 collapses in 2024 alone.

These private plants now produce up to 6,500 MW, surpassing the national grid's output of 4,500 to 5,000 MW.
These private plants now produce up to 6,500 MW, surpassing the national grid's output of 4,500 to 5,000 MW.
Following the 11th grid collapse, the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, established an inter-sectoral investigative committee to examine the causes and potential solutions to Nigeria's recurring grid failures.

However, despite this initiative, a 12th grid collapse occurred on December 11, 2024, bringing the total number of grid collapses in 2024 to 12.

According to The Punch, requests for captive power generation have risen, especially after President Bola Tinubu signed the Electricity Act 2023.

Captive power plants, which generate electricity exclusively for internal use, have grown in number, with many utilizing renewable energy sources like solar.

These plants now produce up to 6,500 MW, surpassing the national grid's output of 4,500 to 5,000 MW.

Permits for such plants have been issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) since 2010.

Dangote's power generation capacity
The Dangote Group is one of the largest captive power generators in Nigeria, with Dangote Industries Limited generating about 1,500 MW of electricity.

The Dangote refinery alone operates a 435 MW power plant, sufficient to meet the entire power requirement of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive officer of Dangote Group, during a Bloomberg Television interview in New York,
Aliko Dangote emphasized that the company does not rely on the national grid but produces power solely for self-consumption.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), a total of 249 firms and institutions have been granted permits to generate captive power, collectively producing around 5,180 MW.

When the 1,500 MW generated by the Dangote Group is added to the 5,180 MW produced by the 249 other companies and institutions granted captive power permits, the total power generation from these entities amounts to over 6,500 MW.

This exceeds the current output of Nigeria's national grid, which typically ranges from 4,500 MW to 5,000 MW.
The Punch report further revealed some of the companies that generate their own power and include MTN Nigeria, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Shell, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, Kaduna refinery, Warri refinery, Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria Plc, Procter and Gamble Nigeria Limited, and Bank of Industry Ltd.

Among the universities with captive power are the University of Lagos, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Federal University Ndufu-Alike IKWO, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Bayero University, Kano, and University of Benin.

During the ministry’s 2025 budget defense, Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu stated that the national grid remains prone to collapse due to the failure to repair the Shiroro-Kaduna-Mando transmission line, damaged in an October 2024 vandalism incident.

The line's failure, caused by persistent insecurity, has placed significant pressure on the grid, leading to frequent collapses.

Adelabu also expressed concern over bulk electricity consumers leaving the national grid for self-generated power, stressing that grid connection is more reliable.

He lamented that despite generating over 5,155 MW, distribution companies are not using the power allocated to them due to fears of debt from low recovery rates.

Stakeholders have also cautioned that grid collapses will persist unless urgent issues like outdated equipment, inadequate gas supply, poor coordination, lack of reserves, and other challenges are addressed.
