PoliticsBreaking: EFCC Moves Against ADC Leaders Ahead Of 2027, Arrests Top Leaders. by Masterstroke4(op): 4:14pm On Aug 12, 2025
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi accused the commission of targeting three former governors in the coalition to weaken the opposition ahead of 2027.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its allies in the 2027 opposition coalition are on edge after the EFCC allegedly launched moves against top leaders accused of plotting to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election.

This followed the interrogation of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totaling ₦189 billion. Tambuwal remains in EFCC custody as investigations continue.

While EFCC declined to comment on the case, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi accused the commission of targeting three former governors in the coalition to weaken the opposition ahead of 2027.

“They have summoned our members, but I won’t give you names. There are three former governors involved… This is an attempt to force them to leave the coalition or to intimidate them… But we are determined to rescue Nigeria,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC also accused the EFCC of acting as a “department of the APC” by reopening old cases against opposition figures while ignoring allegations against ruling party members.

The statement read in part:

“In recent days, several senior members of the Opposition Coalition have received EFCC summons that are clearly politically motivated. These are not fresh cases arising from new evidence but new files opened in reaction to emergent political affiliations to intimidate key opposition figures.

“The EFCC was created to be a fearless defender of the Nigerian people’s trust, applying the law evenly to all, friend or foe, ruling party or opposition.

“Today, that vision appears to have been compromised. The Commission now operates like a department of the APC, deployed to fight government critics and opposition figures, thereby achieving what the government cannot achieve through public debate.

“Meanwhile, investigations into ruling party allies quietly fade away while opposition figures face renewed scrutiny over decade-old allegations dressed up as fresh evidence. This selective prosecution undermines justice.”

ADC added; “It does not augur well for the EFCC if people think that all you need to point the accusing hands of the Commission in your direction is to stand opposed to the ruling party and all that it takes for protection is to align with the government,”

“Unfortunately, this is the widely established perception in Nigeria today, which the commission by its recent actions, including the ongoing surreptitious harassment of opposition leaders, has given credence to.

“The ADC hereby calls on all Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the independent media to resist this dangerous slide into dictatorship and misuse of public institutions to achieve partisan objectives. The EFCC does not belong to the APC. It belongs to the Nigerian people. It is funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party.”

Responding to the accusations, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale dismissed the claims as “untenable and ridiculous,” challenging the ADC to back its statements with facts.

PoliticsArgentina Economic Recovery In A Year An Indictment On Nigeria’s Leadership-Obi by Masterstroke4(op): 1:10pm On Aug 11, 2025
Argentina’s Economic Recovery In A Year An indictment On Nigeria’s Leadership- Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, says Nigeria and Argentina faced similar economic challenges over the past two years but one has emerged stronger.

In a post on X on Monday, Obi said Nigeria’s worsening hunger and poverty are the result of “incompetent leadership without capacity or compassion”.

The former Anambra governor said millions of citizens are struggling to survive as economic mismanagement erodes the middle class and pushes families into hardship.

“In our country today, hunger and poverty are not just distant statistics; they are the harsh reality that millions of our people face daily,” the post reads.

“Recently, the United Nations stated that about 34 million Nigerians will face acute food insecurity, and that about 63 per cent of our population, which is roughly 133 million people, now live in multidimensional poverty.

“Inflation, even with the suppressed statistics, is nearly 30 per cent, while unemployment and economic mismanagement have nearly wiped out our once-vibrant middle class. Families who once lived stable lives are now slipping into poverty.

“But this is not ordinary; it is the result of incompetent leadership without capacity or compassion, which is not interested in putting the Nigerian people first in its actions.

“Other nations have faced similar challenges and turned their fortunes around through disciplined leadership, sound economic policies, and a total commitment from leaders to invest in human development and to pull their people out of poverty.

“A recent example is what is happening in Argentina. In Argentina, over 52 per cent of its population lived in poverty by early 2024, according to the World Bank, with millions of Argentines unable to meet basic needs.

“Inflation was above 200 per cent, and economic confidence had collapsed. Yet within two years, through decisive action to cut waste in governance and to prioritise economic stability, the newly inaugurated president reduced the poverty rate to 38.1 per cent from 52 per cent; extreme poverty fell to 8.2 per cent, with inflation around 2–3 per cent monthly.

“As of 2025, urban poverty had declined to 31.6 per cent, lifting millions of people out of poverty. Investor confidence grew, and the economy began to expand. People now see real improvements in their daily lives.

“Both Argentina and the current Nigerian leadership assumed office in the same year, and this proves what I have always stated: that two years may not be enough to achieve a 100 per cent turnaround.

“But it is more than enough to kickstart the transformation journey that will change the fortune of our dear country, with the people witnessing real and genuine change, but only if leaders are honest, focused, and committed to the people.”

Obi added that prudent governance, along with investments in education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, can deliver results similar to those achieved in other nations.

PoliticsWhy Former VP Atiku Abubakar Insert On Contesting 2027 Presidential Election by Masterstroke4(op): 11:12pm On Aug 10, 2025
Atiku Abubakar's decision to contest the 2027 presidential election seems to be driven by his personal ambition, despite concerns about his age and zoning arrangements within the (ADC).

Here are some key points:
Age Concerns:

Atiku would be 81 years old in 2027, prompting some PDP members, like Bode George, to question his eligibility to govern the country due to his advanced age. George believes Atiku should mentor younger politicians instead of seeking the presidency.

Zoning Arrangements:
The PDP is grappling with internal disputes over zoning its presidential ticket. Some stakeholders, including Nyesom Wike and Bode George, advocate for zoning the presidency to the south in 2027, given the north's eight-year tenure. This would render Atiku ineligible for the party's nomination.

Party Dynamics:
Atiku's ambition has sparked debate within the PDP. While some members support his candidacy, others, like Bode George, think the party should deny him the 2027 presidential ticket due to his age and the zoning arrangement.

No Clear Indication of Stepping Down for Peter Obi:
There's no evidence to suggest Atiku plans to step down for Peter Obi. Instead, Atiku has expressed his intention to "keep contesting" for the Nigerian presidency as long as he's able.

These factors contribute to the complex dynamics within the PDP as it navigates the 2027 presidential election.

If APC Wins In 2027, Nigeria Will Be Empty To Niger, Benin, And Other Countries—Lekan Ojo-Jackson

A political commentator, Lekan Ojo-Jackson, has warned that another victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election could lead to a mass exodus of Nigerians to neighbouring countries.

Speaking during a political discussion, Ojo-Jackson expressed deep concern over the current state of the economy, healthcare, education, and security under the APC-led government. He argued that Nigerians are already experiencing extreme hardship, forcing many to leave the country in search of better living conditions.

“If APC wins in 2027, Nigeria will be empty to Niger, Benin, and other countries,” he said. Ojo-Jackson explained that the continued economic hardship has made life unbearable for the majority of citizens, citing examples of how the cost of living has skyrocketed and how many families can no longer afford basic necessities.

He pointed out that ordinary Nigerians who once travelled by air now find it impossible to afford road transport. He also highlighted how many have withdrawn their children from school because they cannot pay fees, sold their cars due to high fuel costs, and are unable to run their generators because of the price of petrol.

Ojo-Jackson described the current administration as one that has failed in governance, leading to what he called a “nosedive” in the country’s key sectors. He urged Nigerians to consider giving other political parties a chance, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he said is gaining popularity across the country.

The commentator further noted that people from different regions, especially in the North, are embracing the ADC because they feel neglected and oppressed by the present government. According to him, this wave of support could give APC a tough challenge in 2027.

Ojo-Jackson concluded by saying Nigerians should “take the risk” of trying different leadership, insisting that continuing with the same government will only worsen the situation and drive more citizens out of the country.

PoliticsI'm Baffled That My Four-year Term Decision Is Causing So Much Controversy - Obi by Masterstroke4(op): 8:01pm On Aug 05, 2025
I Still Find It Baffling That My Decision To Do a Term of Four Years is Generating So Much Agitation - Peter Obi

Obi argued that the agitations so far discredit the idea that a sincere leader can make changes in a country within two years of assuming office.

Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of Labour party in the 2023 general election has expressed shock that his decision to serve a term of four years is generating agitation.

He took to his social media page to express his shock.

Obi argued that the agitations so far discredit the idea that a sincere leader can make changes in a country within two years of assuming office.

He argued that he has no personal ambition other than to serve Nigerians in the best capacity that he can. He said he is committed to see Nigeria work and that it means giving him four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.

‘’If Service is the motive Turning the Tide in Four Years is Possible

I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.

I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter. There are some traits associated with desperation, which in no way are in any of my political behaviours in the past and now, like engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric or actions to prove a point or gain attention; becoming overly defensive or reactive to criticism, often to the point of appearing paranoid.

Making unrealistic or unfulfillable promises to win support or approval, resorting to personal attacks or character assassination to discredit opponents or frequently changing positions or policies to suit immediate political needs.

What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep, commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.

Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice. I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility.

Ask those who have contested against me—none were ever denied their rights, framed, or falsely accused. None was asked to place their advert materials or break the bank to do so. I believe in fair competition, not manufactured victories.

In four years we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure.

Within the same period, we ensure that the rule is sacrosanct and the rule of law is strictly followed.

Within the same period, we can conduct free, fair and credible elections.

Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all. -PO''

A wave of excitement rippled across social media platforms following the release of new photographs showcasing individuals in Northern Nigeria proudly wearing caps linked to Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election. These images, which quickly gained traction online, were shared on August 5, 2025, by Yunusa Tanko, a key figure in the Obidient Movement, through his verified X account. The photographs not only highlighted the growing popularity of Obi’s political brand but also captured Tanko himself posing alongside the cap-wearing supporters, adding a personal touch to the viral moment.

In his post, Tanko invited members of the Obidient Movement and other social media users to weigh in on a creative decision: naming the iconic cap. He suggested three options—Prosperity Cap, Thinking Cap, or New Nigeria Cap—each carrying symbolic weight tied to the movement’s aspirations for economic growth, intellectual engagement, and a transformed nation. The post sparked a lively discussion, with users flooding the comment section with their preferences, critiques, and expressions of support for Obi’s enduring influence. The cap, a simple yet powerful symbol, has become a recognizable emblem for Obi’s supporters, often referred to as “Obidients,” who continue to rally around his vision for a reimagined Nigeria.

The images and Tanko’s accompanying message resonated deeply, reigniting conversations about Obi’s political legacy and the Labour Party’s role in shaping Nigeria’s future. Many users praised the cap as a unifying symbol, while others debated its potential to inspire grassroots momentum ahead of future elections. Some comments reflected nostalgia for the 2023 campaign, where Obi’s candidacy galvanized a broad coalition of young and disillusioned voters seeking change. Others saw the cap as a bold statement of hope, transcending regional and ethnic divides in a country often polarized by politics.

The online buzz underscored the Obidient Movement’s ability to sustain its relevance, leveraging symbols like the cap to keep supporters engaged. While some reactions were celebratory, others sparked debates about the practical implications of such symbols in Nigeria’s complex political landscape. Critics questioned whether the cap could translate into tangible political gains, while supporters argued it represented a cultural shift toward progressive ideals. The diversity of opinions highlighted the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s social media space, where political discourse thrives.

President Bola Tinubu has announced a reward of $100,000 for each member of the victorious national female basketball team, D’Tigress.

He announced the reward at a reception organised for the team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, were among those who welcomed the basket champions and the coaching crew, led by the Head Coach, Rena Wakama.

The victorious D’Tigress arrived the forecourt of the President’s office few minutes before 5pm and were ushered into the New Banquet Hall of the State House.

The Nigerian team defeated Mali 78–64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday night, to secure their seventh AfroBasket title overall and fifth consecutive title.

The victory cemented their dominance in African women’s basketball.

D’Tigress Outclass Mali 78-64 To Extend AfroBasket Reign, Expected To Meet Tinubu Today

Nigeria extended their dominance in African women’s basketball on Sunday, defeating Mali 78-64 in Ivory Coast to win a record fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket Women’s title, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The triumph not only cemented their dominance over the continent but also broke Senegal’s four-in-a-row streak from 1974 to 1981, establishing Nigeria as the first side in history to win the championship five times consecutively.

Nigeria, who have now won seven African titles, wasted no time asserting themselves. D’Tigress surged to a 12-0 scoring run early in the game, establishing a rhythm that Mali struggled to disrupt.

However, it was the Malians who claimed the first quarter 26-21.

Coach Rena Wakama’s side recovered from the five-point deficit to clinch the second quarter 20-15, as both teams went into the half-time interval level at 41-41 apiece.

The third quarter also went the way of D’Tigress, who clinched it by another 20-15 scoreline.

In the fourth quarter, Nigeria began to run down the clock as they tried to cling to their advantage. The last 10 minutes of the quarter finished in favour of D’Tigress 17-8 as Nigeria powered to yet another continental title.

The win saw Nigeria extend their unbeaten streak at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament to 29 games, stretching back the last 10 years.

Also, they have secured an automatic spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo was named the Most Valuable Player, winning the award for a second consecutive tournament.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu congratulated the D’Tigress for the feat, hailing their performance as a source of national pride.

“You did it, girls! D’Tigress Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy,” the president wrote in a post on X.

Key to Nigeria’s success was a balanced offensive performance and clinical execution. They shot 49.18 per cent from the field, outclassing Mali’s 37 per cent. The inside game was particularly telling, with Nigeria converting 59.46 per cent of their two-point attempts compared to Mali’s 44.12 per cent.

In contrast, both teams were less efficient from long range, with Nigeria making 8 of 24 from beyond the arc, while Mali hit just 7 of 26.

Leading the scoring for Nigeria was guard Ezinne Kalu, who poured in 20 points on 53.85 per cent shooting, also registering five assists, four rebounds and a perfect 4/4 from the free throw line.

Amy Okonkwo, who played the full 40 minutes, contributed a crucial double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting a superb 63.64 per cent from the field and registering an efficiency rating of 26.

Murjanatu Musa dominated the paint, grabbing 12 rebounds alongside nine points and three steals. Veteran point guard Promise Amukamara was the engine of Nigeria’s fluid offence, dishing out a game-high 11 assists and finishing with a +16 plus-minus despite scoring just eight points.

Victoria Macaulay added 10 points off the bench, offering Nigeria much-needed depth. In contrast, Nigeria’s bench contributed 22 points overall, slightly outscored by Mali’s 26, but it was Nigeria’s starting five that made the difference.

Collectively, Nigeria totalled 24 assists and committed 14 turnovers, a figure Mali could not exploit fully despite Nigeria’s occasional lapses.

Defensively, Nigeria were disciplined. They managed eight steals and conceded only 13 personal fouls, keeping Mali’s offensive threats at bay. The rebounding battle was narrowly lost, with Mali edging it 37 to 36, but Nigeria’s 27 defensive rebounds were vital in limiting second-chance points.

Despite grabbing fewer offensive rebounds (nine to Mali’s 13), Nigeria still outscored their opponents in the paint with 40 points to Mali’s 26.

Perhaps the most telling statistic was points off turnovers. Nigeria converted 17 Mali turnovers into 17 points, compared to Mali’s 14 points off Nigeria’s 14 turnovers.

Fast-break points also tilted in Nigeria’s favour, 10 to 5, as did second-chance points, 8 to 5. These margins, although modest, collectively illustrated Nigeria’s efficiency and composure in key moments.

With this victory, Nigeria’s unbeaten streak in the competition now stands at an extraordinary 29 games, dating back to 2015.

They have not lost a game in AfroBasket Women in a full decade. In terms of African titles, they now trail only Senegal, who still lead the all-time count with 11 championships.

For Mali, the loss marked a third unsuccessful AfroBasket final, following defeats to Senegal in 2009 and Nigeria in 2021. Their youthful squad, averaging 24 years of age compared to Nigeria’s 28, showed promise and resilience throughout the tournament but fell short when experience and execution mattered most.

Players such as Sika Koné and Djeneba N’Diaye played with energy and intent, yet the more seasoned Nigerians used their nous to outmanoeuvre Mali’s spirited challenge.

This final was also a culmination of years of rivalry between the two sides. Since 2011, Nigeria and Mali have each won three games apiece against one another in AfroBasket competition, until this latest meeting tipped the balance in Nigeria’s favour.

The history added intensity to the encounter, but Nigeria’s familiarity with high-pressure finals and their cohesion under pressure proved decisive.

Mali, along with Senegal and South Sudan, which edged Senegal 66-65 in the third-place match, will also join the World Cup qualification pathway.

South Sudan’s bronze was their first-ever AfroBasket medal, further underlining the growing competitiveness of African women’s basketball.

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again stamped their authority on the continent, defeating Mali 78–64 to retain their crown at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

In a thrilling final clash, Mali came out strong, edging the first quarter 26–21. However, D’Tigress rallied back in the second quarter to level the game at 41–41 by halftime, setting the stage for a fierce second-half showdown.

The Nigerian team, known for their grit and depth, took full control in the third quarter with a dominant display at both ends of the court. They carried that momentum into the final period to seal a commanding 14-point victory.

This historic win marks Nigeria’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title — a rare feat that cements D’Tigress’ legacy as the most successful women’s basketball team in modern African history.

Capping off the team’s brilliant tournament performance, Nigerian forward Amy Okonkwo was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket Championship, a well-deserved honor recognizing her exceptional impact throughout the competition.

Their triumph not only underscores Nigeria’s continued dominance in the sport but also reflects the sustained development and investment in women’s basketball in the country.

If you are Igbo, open your eyes! There is NO SOUTHERN UNITY ANYWHERE.....don't be fooled by the SW.

If Tinubu could join the north to remove his brother southerner THEN HE DESERVES THE SAME TREATMENT FOR the retrogression, incompetence, poverty, hunger, insecurity with severe bigotry he has brought upon Nigeria.

Please open your eyes if you are Igbo.

The Northerners are better allies than the SW.

I don't know how old you are but the open hate many SWerners are showing the Igbo since Tinubu won CAN NO LONGER BE TOLERATED....just because Obi dared to beat Tinubu in Lagos.

Open your eyes! The dynamics have changed!!
You are right 👍

ADC: Why I’ll Support Peter Obi – El-Rufai’s Son

The statement comes after an X user asked Bashir if he will support Obi if he emerges as the ADC flag bearer.

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has declared support for Mr Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 election.

According to him, he will vote for Obi if he emerges the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress.

The statement comes after an X user asked Bashir if he will support Obi if he emerges as the ADC flag bearer.

Responding to the question, the younger El-Rufai said he will certainly support him, adding that Obi might save the nation from those he described as ‘urban bandits’ in the Presidential Villa.

He said: “An emphatic yes. He may save us from these urban bandits in the Presidential Villa.”

Recall that Bashir had on Thursday suggested that the sheer force of Peter Obi’s numbers and cult-like followership poses a serious challenge to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, the 2019 presidential election would have been Atiku’s best shot at the presidency.

PoliticsPeter Obi, Ajaero Planning To Break Into Aso Rock, Overthrow Tinubu- LP Arabambi by Masterstroke4(op): 5:14pm On Aug 02, 2025
Factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, LP, Abayomi Arabambi, has accused the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, of planning to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

Arabambi disclosed that Obi and Ajaero are planning to forcefully break into the National Assembly and “Aso Rock” to overthrow Tinubu.

Condemning the planned one-million-man rally, Arabambi accused Obi of doing everything possible to make Nigeria ungovernable.

In an interview on News Central TV’s programme, Breakfast Central, Arabambi said Obi and Ajaero have their eyes on the presidency, but they lack the right strategy.

He said: “Peter Obi and Joe Ajaero have been planning everything possible to make Nigeria ungovernable, this is a man that has never spoken well about our country since 2023 and that is unpresidential as far as I’m concerned.

“As a Nigerian, if you don’t have any good in your country, you have an aim to make sure that administration does not succeed, that is not the function of the opposition, it’s just for you to put the ruling party on their toes.

“Whatever they are doing you must come out with a possible solution, it’s not just for you to be willing for the failure or downfall of that administration.

“When he was a governor, you all knew what the man going about with him then, Umeh, said about him during their second term.

“He called Obi a rebel, he said Obi is a man who wants to be controlling him but he, as APGA National Chairman, is not open to control.

“Peter Obi and Ajaero should explain to Nigerians and the National Security Adviser what exactly they want to do with the one-million-man rally, are they campaigning for Obi to be president under which party? This is not an election period and you are now claiming that you want to mobilize one million people.

“It is an attempt to forcibly enter the National Assembly and Aso Rock and overthrow the president. Peter Obi and Ajaero have their eyes on the presidency but they don’t want to do it through elections.”

PoliticsNiger State Demand 13% Derivation, Drags FG To Supreme Court Over Its Omission by Masterstroke4(op): 7:47am On Aug 01, 2025
Niger State Demands 13% Derivation, Drags FG To Supreme Court Over Its Omission,

ABUJA– The Niger State Government has taken the Federal Government to the Supreme Court to challenge its omission as a beneficiary of the 13 per cent derivation.

The state, in the originating summons it filed through its team of lawyers led by Mr. Mohammed Ndarani, SAN, listed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice as the sole defendant in the case.

The plaintiff, among other things, urged the apex court to determine whether Niger State does not qualify to be classified among the states that produce natural resources and therefore is entitled to 13 per cent derivation within the meaning of 162(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

It further prayed the court to interpret and apply section 232 (1) & (2) of the Constitution to compel its inclusion by FG, in line with the Enactment of Allocation of Revenue (Federation Account, etc.) Act, 2004.

The state alleged a failure to include remittances from proceeds of fiscal revenue generated and accrued through Hydroelectric Power dams within its territory, which it argued formed part of the resources it contributes to the overall electricity generation to the national grid since 1968.

According to the plaintiff, it hosts four major hydroelectricity dams: Kainji Dam, Jebba Dam, Shiroro Dam and Zungeru Dam, which serve as a power house for electricity supply to various states in the country.

It argued that through these power stations, FG extended electricity supply to the Republics of Benin, Togo and Niger.

The state said its decision to list the AGF as the sole defendant in the matter was because he statutorily offers oversight, legal advice function, and represents the Federal Government, including the Accountant-General of the Federation.

It noted that the Accountant-General has the constitutional role of preparing the nation’s financial statements from collection and receipts of income, fees, rentals and taxes, and payments from the federation account.

“That the attorney general at all times is charged with legally advising and representing the Auditor-General of the Federation and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission that oversees revenue accruing to, and disbursement of such funds from the Federation Account,” it argued.

It accused the defendant of failing to properly advise the President, especially on how to ensure equitable distribution of resources in conformity with current realities, particularly with the enormous fiscal revenue generated by Niger State.

The plaintiff stressed that it is a purely agrarian state as its inhabitants are subsistence farmers whose produce is enjoyed across the state and beyond.

It contended that as a result of the large expanse of the land occupied by the dams, a large population of its citizens and residents are denied the opportunity of engaging in agricultural activities.

Niger state maintained that it has continued to host the dams that were established since 1968, decrying that despite its contributions in terms of revenue, it has been a victim of incessant and continuous flooding.

“This has resulted in wanton loss of human lives and livestock as well as destruction of properties, leading unavoidably to displacement of many residents from their homes,” it averred.

More so, the plaintiff claimed that the Physicochemical/Microbiological Impact Assessment Report it conducted showed a high level of degradation in the affected areas.

“This represents an impending danger that looms large in the horizon for the state over the coming years if urgent stringent environment protection measures are not taken.

“To the chagrin, detriment, continuous exploitation and utter impoverishment of the people of Niger State, the defendant continuously and continually whisked off profits from the state.

“The federal government should not be only concerned about benefiting from the dams located in the territory of the state without a care for its people,” the plaintiff added.

More so, the plaintiff said it was unfortunate that the office of the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, had no information on the volume of electricity by megawatts, generated by the dams since 1968 and 2019, except for those of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

It said the NBS computation of the volume of electricity by megawatts generated into the national grid from 2020 – 2023, was: “The sum total megawatt generated in 2020 is equal to 2,232,706.27, 2021 equal to 2,632,348.00, 2022 equal to 2,830,002.96 and in 2023 equal to 2,658,612.96.”

“These dams have generated fiscal revenue which has been controlled by the federal government and have been indisputably redistributed equally amongst the constituent states without considering the host (Niger State) since 1968 till date,” Ndarani, SAN, added.

He said the plaintiff, its citizens and residents suffered continuous exploitation, neglect and ravaging floods due to the power generating activities of FG and its agencies.

Consequently, the plaintiff prayed the apex court to intervene and order its inclusion in the 13 per cent derivation.

Meantime, no date has been fixed for the matter to be heard.

PoliticsEl-rufai Not A Member Of The Party – SDP Clarifies. by Masterstroke4(op): 3:24pm On Jul 25, 2025
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai is neither a member of the party nor authorised to represent it in any official capacity.

Recall that after El-Rufai defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on March 10, 2025, he announced his intention to join the SDP.

In a letter titled “Onwards to the Future”, El-Rufai had cited the APC’s departure from its founding ideals and years of unresolved internal issues as reasons for his exit. He expressed a desire to pursue his progressive political goals on a new platform.

Following his announcement, the former governor began participating in meetings linked to the newly formed opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Friday, SDP North West Zonal Secretary, Alhaji Idris Inuwa, said the party was shocked by El-Rufai’s conduct, describing it as unauthorised and misleading.

“Let it be made unequivocally clear — Mallam El-Rufai is not authorised, mandated, or recognised by the SDP in any capacity. His actions amount to grave impersonation and reputational sabotage,” Inuwa stated.

He explained that El-Rufai had neither registered with the party nor participated in its strategic activities. “He has not been registered, does not attend our strategy sessions, and his name does not appear in any part of our official records. Our party operates a transparent and verifiable membership structure,” he added.

The SDP has urged the media, political actors, and the general public to ignore any claims or representations made by El-Rufai on behalf of the party. It stressed that only the national leadership — comprising Acting National Chairman Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, National Secretary Chief (Dr.) Olu Agunloye and 2023 Presidential Candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo are empowered to speak for the party.

In a related development, the Kaduna North SDP leadership also issued a vote of no confidence in Dr. Umar Ardo, accusing him of exploiting the party’s platform to promote another political group, the African Democratic Alternative (ADA). The local executives described his actions as a “fraudulent hijack” of the SDP’s identity.

“We pass a vote of no confidence on Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. He is a self-serving individual whose jobless meanderings under our name are pathetic attempts at relevance. He has no connection to our party,” Inuwa declared.

PoliticsStates Have No Jurisdiction To Deviate From Tariffs – NERC Warns by Masterstroke4(op): 7:36am On Jul 25, 2025
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a stern warning to state electricity regulators, declaring that states do not possess the jurisdiction to unilaterally deviate from federally-determined electricity tariffs when importing power from the national grid.

The statement follows a controversial tariff order issued by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), which has drawn significant attention from stakeholders within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). NERC emphasised that all state regulators must honour the full cost of wholesale power purchases from the national grid or provide subsidies to cover any shortfalls created by lower retail tariffs.

The debate is rooted in sweeping changes brought about by the 2023 amendment to Nigeria’s Constitution and the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023 (EA), which decentralized the country’s electricity market. The legal reforms dismantled the previous monopoly of the Federal Government in regulating electricity, granting states authority to establish their own electricity markets and regulatory frameworks.

Under the new legal regime, states are empowered to legislate and regulate intra-state generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. However, this autonomy is conditional and does not extend to assets or services sourced from the national grid, which remain under federal oversight.

So far, 10 states—Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, and Oyo—have assumed full regulatory control over their intra-state electricity markets. Plateau State is expected to follow suit by September 2025, while Abia and Delta States have expressed readiness to commence the transition.

The current controversy was triggered by EERC’s Tariff Order No. EERC/2025/003, which reduced tariffs for Band A customers within the Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) network to NGN160.4 per kWh. The reduction was largely achieved by slashing the average Generation Tariff from NGN112.60 per kWh to NGN45.75 per kWh—a difference of NGN66.85 per kWh.

Critically, MEDL relies exclusively on the national grid for power supply. This has raised alarms among stakeholders who argue that EERC’s tariff framework distorts the cost structure of the national electricity market and may undermine the financial integrity of NESI.

NERC, in its official response, clarified that while states have regulatory independence within their local electricity markets, they are still bound by the wholesale costs of power sourced from the national grid. Any deviation without a compensatory subsidy constitutes a breach of market rules and risks destabilizing the fragile electricity supply chain.

NERC cited Section 34(1) of the Electricity Act 2023, which mandates the Commission to “create, promote and preserve efficient electricity industry and market structures, and ensure the optimal utilization of resources for the provision of electricity.” This, it argued, includes protecting the financial viability of power generation and transmission companies whose operations span multiple states.

The Commission reiterated that tariff integrity is critical to maintaining investor confidence and enabling cost recovery for power infrastructure financed through public and private investments. Any tariff distortion, especially when it fails to reflect the actual cost of generation and transmission, risks triggering a financial crisis across the electricity value chain.

While EERC is also expected to promote efficiency under its own enabling laws, NERC stressed that regulatory decisions at the state level must not contravene federal laws or disrupt the stability of the national grid.

The EA allows for a dual regulatory framework during the transition phase. States that have not assumed full control remain under NERC’s regulatory purview. However, even states that have transitioned, like Enugu, are required to align their tariff models with national standards when interfacing with the national grid.

NERC warned that tariffs involving national grid-sourced power cannot be arbitrarily adjusted at the sub-national level. It urged state regulators to either respect full cost recovery in their tariff design or introduce policy-driven subsidies to cover any under-recovery.

Despite the firm tone, NERC indicated that it is engaging constructively with EERC to clarify perceived misunderstandings in tariff design. The Commission emphasised its commitment to collaboration and regulatory coherence, stating that the matter will be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.

“All stakeholders are advised to note that the Commission is currently engaging EERC on their tariff order as it relates to any perceived area of misinterpretation/misunderstanding,” the statement read.
