Discos Lament As Customers Resist Bill Payments After Enugu Tariff Cut Electricity distribution companies across Nigeria have raised the alarm over growing consumer resistance to bill payments following the recent tariff cut by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, warning that the move threatens to destabilise the country’s fragile power sector. The Discos disclosed that since EERC announced a reduction in Band A tariffs from N209 per kilowatt-hour to N160/kWh, customers in other states have begun to demand similar cuts, with some outrightly refusing to pay their electricity bills. In a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, Sunday Oduntan, said, “Since the release of the tariff order by EERC for Enugu State residents, the electricity distribution companies in other states have come under intense pressure and scrutiny also to reduce tariffs, while some customers have taken a position that they will no longer pay their electricity bills until tariffs are reduced.” While acknowledging the desire for more affordable power, the Discos stressed that electricity tariffs remain cost-reflective and are tied to broader national economic conditions. “Permit us to establish the fact that as service providers, it is our hope and desire that the electricity tariff at some points should begin to go down with time. “It is not our intention to make life difficult for our loyal customers, and we have been aligning with the Federal Government to ensure the provision of a stable power supply. “However, the cost reflective tariff is a result of the economic realities of our nation,” they explained. They criticised the EERC for proceeding without proper coordination with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other market players, warning that such actions create confusion among customers and distort the market. “The tariff reduction by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, without adequate coordination with NERC and other participants, raises significant concerns for the stability and liquidity of the power sector,” the statement read. The Discos noted that the tariff slash relied heavily on the Federal Government’s subsidy policy to crash prices, but cautioned that unfunded or delayed subsidies had already crippled parts of the value chain. “Subsidies must be transparently structured and promptly funded. Otherwise, they create cashflow disruptions and undermine market confidence,” the group said. Referencing the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, the Discos reiterated that any state choosing to reduce tariffs must also be prepared to fund the resulting subsidy. Oduntan also warned that current delays in electricity subsidy payments have left power generation companies and gas suppliers with almost N5tn in unpaid invoices, creating a ripple effect that endangers the national power supply. They urged greater coordination between the Federal Ministry of Power, NERC, and state regulators to ensure policy coherence, adding that many States are already unable to bear additional financial burdens due to harsh economic conditions. “While the goal of making electricity more affordable is shared by all, it must be pursued in a manner that preserves the financial health of the market,” Oduntan stated He concluded with a call for policy alignment across federal and state levels; a fully funded, transparent subsidy framework; and timely subsidy disbursements to ensure continued power supply. He warned that unless urgent steps are taken, public resistance to payment, sparked by uncoordinated tariff actions, could jeopardise efforts to build a stable and investor-friendly electricity market in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the EERC clarified that its recent tariff cut did not tamper with the prevailing cost of power generation in the country in any way. The commission maintained that, based on MainPower’s costs, there was no justification to keep the price of electricity for Band A at N209/kWh in the state. In a statement by EERC’s Commissioner for Electricity Market Operations, Reuben Okoye, the agency maintained that although it inherited the current tariff regime, “the commission is focused on developing a sub-national electricity market that is transparent, accountable, reliable and sustainable and therefore will review utility costs of service to achieve its mandate to the people of Enugu. EERC further clarified, “The Order is for MainPower’s operation in Enugu State. It does not affect electricity services in other states, between states and across the country. The cost of delivering electricity from the national Grid to MainPower via EEDC has been accommodated in full. We did not tamper with that cost at all in our tariff determination, but rather adopted it. “Our order ensures that MainPower recovers all its efficient costs and makes a reasonable return in its business of providing electricity services to citizens of Enugu State. Considerations and reconsiderations of the MainPower tariff application and data still present the same outcome that ensures full payment of invoices to all parties.”

Hausas Petition ICC: Ethnic Cleansing Alleged in Northern Nigeria. In a searing appeal to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Hausa Native Advancement and Development Initiative (HNADI) has accused armed Fulani bandits of waging a systematic campaign of violence against Hausa communities in Northern Nigeria, branding it ethnic cleansing with elements of potential genocide. The petition, submitted on behalf of the Hausa people, paints a chilling picture of mass killings, abductions, and destroyed villages, while alleging complicity by powerful elements within the Nigerian state and Fulani elites. The document, laden with survivor testimonies and photographic evidence, demands urgent international intervention to halt a humanitarian catastrophe. The petition details a relentless wave of attacks across Hausa heartlands in states like Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna. Entire villages have been razed, with homes, farmlands, and livestock reduced to ashes. These are not random acts of banditry but a coordinated effort to eradicate Hausa populations from their ancestral lands Families have been slaughtered, with mass graves reported in remote areas, such as the site of a 2024 massacre in Kankara, Katsina, where over 70 villagers were killed in a single night. Women and children face abductions, often subjected to sexual violence or held for ransom, while tens of thousands have fled to overcrowded camps lacking food, water, or security. The HNADI asserts that these are not random acts of banditry but a coordinated effort to eradicate Hausa populations from their ancestral lands, pointing to the scale and ethnic targeting of the violence as evidence of crimes against humanity. Most damningly, the petition accuses the Nigerian state of complicity through deliberate inaction and favoritism. It claims security forces are frequently withdrawn or ordered to stand down during attacks, leaving communities defenseless, as seen in a 2025 incident in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna. The HNADI alleges that the ethnic composition of Nigeria’s leadership, with key positions held by Fulani individuals, has fostered an environment of impunity, where bandits operate without fear of prosecution. With domestic remedies exhausted, the Hausa representatives have turned to the ICC, submitting what they describe as irrefutable evidence Influential Fulani elites and religious scholars are accused of normalizing the violence, dismissing it as resource conflicts or defending the perpetrators, while local judicial systems fail to deliver justice due to underfunding or interference. With domestic remedies exhausted, the Hausa representatives have turned to the ICC, submitting what they describe as irrefutable evidence: photographs of mass graves, videos of burning villages, and survivor accounts corroborated by humanitarian reports. The petition urges the court to investigate the violence, hold perpetrators and their enablers accountable, and provide reparations for displaced communities. It frames the crisis as a global human rights emergency, warning that unchecked ethnic violence threatens not only the Hausa but the stability of West Africa, potentially fueling further conflict and refugee flows. The petition has ignited fierce debate in Nigeria. Hausa communities in Kano and Sokoto have staged protests, demanding international action, while some Fulani groups counter that the violence stems from resource disputes driven by climate change, not ethnic targeting. Photographs of mass graves, videos of burning villages, and survivor accounts corroborated by humanitarian reports The Nigerian government has yet to issue a formal response, though officials have previously downplayed the crisis as localized banditry. Legal experts suggest the ICC could assert jurisdiction if Nigeria is deemed unwilling or unable to address the crimes, drawing parallels to cases like Darfur. As the ICC considers the petition, the Hausa people’s plea resonates as both a cry for survival and a challenge to the international community. The HNADI calls for solidarity from human rights groups, foreign governments, and the United Nations, urging them to pressure Nigeria to act. The petition underscores the Hausa’s rich heritage as farmers, traders, and scholars, asserting their right to live in peace. For now, the world watches to see if the ICC will take up the cause, potentially reshaping the fight against ethnically motivated violence in Africa’s most populous nation. The Hausa await justice, hoping their suffering will not be met with si

The Labour Party has announced that its Former Vice Presidential Candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared interest in running for President in 2027. Rising from a meeting at its National Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, 21st of July, the Chairman, Julius Abure, congratulated Datti for showing interest in contesting for President on the Party’s Platform in 2027. He also dissociated the party from an NEC meeting held at Transcorp Hotel on Friday, the 18th of July 2025. The NEC meeting witnessed the Presence of the Party’s Former Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, where it was resolved that Nenadi Usman would function as a factional chairman of the Party. It's no longer news that the Labour Party is mired in a bitter crisis that has divided it into Two Factions. The Full Statement signed by Abure and the Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim read; RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) OF LABOUR PARTY HELD ON MONDAY, 21st JULY 2025 AT THE NATIONAL SECRETARIAT, UTAKO, ABUJA, AT 02:00 PM. Datti Baba-Ahmed, Vice Presidential candidate of the 2023 General Election, State Chairmen, and Stakeholders of the party and other co-opted members of the National Executive Council as provided by Article 13 (A) of the Party Constitution. At the end of the meeting, the following resolutions were approved and adopted; 1. The NEC in session after reviewing the purported NEC meeting held in Transcorp on Friday, the 18th of July 2025, condemned the conveners of the meetings and thereafter dissociated itself from the outcome of the so-called NEC meeting where they renamed their illegal Caretaker Committee set up in Umuahia last year as Interim National Working Committee. 2. NEC notes that no matter how illegality is decorated it can not be legal. Renaming the Caretaker Committee, Interim NWC does not remove its illegality. 3. This sitting contravenes the Party’s Constitution. Article 14 (4) (B) gives powers to call meetings only to the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chairman. The meeting also contravenes the provisions of Section 82 (1) (2) (a) of the Electoral Act 2022 which provides as follows: 82 (1) Every registered political party shall give the Commission at least 21 days’ notice of any Convention, Congress, Conference or meeting convened for the purpose of ‘’merger’’ and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies, or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices specified under this Act. Such notice must be given by the National Chairman and Secretary of the Party. (2) The Commission may, with or without prior notice to the political party attend and observe any convention, congress, conference or meeting which is convened by a political party for the purpose of (a) electing members of its executive committees or other governing bodies. 4. The Party has conducted its National Convention in line with the party Constitution, the Electoral Act and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 27th March, 2024 at Nnewi, Anambra State, which has been validated by the Supreme Court in its Judgment of the 4th April 2025. Consequently, NEC in session therefore calls on the Honourable Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu to comply with the Supreme Court Judgment, all the legal and other opinions before him. Based on the foregoing, therefore, NEC in session hereby call on all teeming members, supporters, and members of the general public to kindly disregard the so-called meeting and its outcome. 6. NEC in session hereby re-imposes confidence in the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure led the National Working Committee and urged all Party members to continue to respect the leadership of the party and obey its lawful directives. 7. NEC in session also approved the conduct of State, Local Government, and Ward Congress as may be scheduled by the National Working Committee in line with the party’s Constitution and other Extant laws. 8. NEC in session reiterates that the Labour Party will not be part of any coalition for the 2027 general election. NEC believes that the coalition of 2023 is bigger than any other coalition. we will therefore rebuild, reconcile, and consolidate the gains of the 2023 general election. Labour Party is distinct in terms of its ideology, programs, philosophy, and manifestos, which has the answers to the socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. We can therefore not be tempted by joining any politically spent forces that have hitherto, squandered the resources and opportunity of the Nation. 9. NEC in session commends Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed for identifying with the leadership and declaring his interest in the 2027 general election. Known for his modest lifestyle, Peter Obi has previously said he owns just one wristwatch he’s worn for 17 years and two pairs of black shoes. Breaking: Enugu Becomes First State to Cut Electricity Tariff Under New Power Law. In a landmark regulatory intervention, the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs, slashing the cost of Band A power supply from N209 to N160 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while freezing tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E. The new tariff takes effect from August 1, 2025. The announcement was made through Order No. EERC/2025/003, titled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025,” which was issued over the weekend. MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the utility company that succeeded the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), will now operate under the new rate regime. The move comes after a detailed tariff and license application review by EERC, in accordance with its 2024 Tariff Methodology Regulations and supported by the Distribution Tariff Model. Speaking on the development, EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo explained that the new Band A tariff reflects a cost-justified model and takes into account federal subsidies on electricity generation. “We arrived at an average cost-reflective tariff of N94/kWh. Band A customers will pay N160, which is still significantly below the previously approved N209/kWh,” Okonkwo stated. He further explained that the federal government currently subsidizes electricity generation costs — paying only N45 out of an actual N112/kWh — thereby cushioning the pricing burden on end users. “This reduction benefits consumers while helping MainPower manage tariff stability over time, especially if the subsidy is withdrawn in the future. Crucially, this model ensures no additional subsidy is required from the Enugu State Government,” he said. The tariff adjustment is grounded in the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, signed into law by Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, following the 2023 constitutional amendment which decentralised electricity regulation. That law gave EERC exclusive jurisdiction over electricity regulation within Enugu State, in line with the federal Electricity Act 2023, which repealed the previous Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. The Commission has also mandated robust transparency and accountability mechanisms to ensure service quality, particularly for Band A customers. “MainPower must publish a rolling seven-day average of daily power supply hours on each Band A feeder. Failure to meet service standards for two consecutive days must be reported within 24 hours,” EERC warned. “Persistent failure—seven consecutive days—will result in the automatic downgrading of that feeder’s tariff band.” EERC reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection and sustainable power sector development, vowing to work with investors, developers, and the general public to build a reliable and cost-effective electricity market. This bold regulatory move positions Enugu as a national trailblazer in state-level power sector reform and consumer-focused electricity pricing.

Peter Obi Is Welcome To Edo State Anytime- Olumide Akpata Says Let’s be clear: Mr. Peter Obi does not need anyone’s permission to visit Edo State or any other State for that matter. Not now, not ever- Olumide Akpata (Former NBA chairman). When I first saw the video clip of Governor Monday Okpebholo threatening Mr. Peter Obi not to enter Edo State without his “permission”, I genuinely thought it was fake — perhaps one of those AI-generated videos or a poorly written skit. But it’s now clear it wasn’t fake. The Governor hasn’t denied it, no spokesperson has disowned it, and it’s been reported on credible news platforms. So, we must assume it was real — and that’s deeply troubling. Edo people are known for being warm, open, and hospitable. We welcome visitors. We don’t chase them away — much less someone like Mr. Obi who came to make a modest, generous contribution by donating ₦15 million to an educational institution in our state. Let’s be clear: Mr. Peter Obi does not need anyone’s permission to visit Edo State or any other State for that matter. Not now, not ever. Perhaps Governor Okpebholo should focus more on governing in a way that earns him the kind of love and connection that Peter Obi enjoys amongst the people — the way Mr. Obi has consistently done through his exemplary leadership. That this ill-judged threat came on the eve of Mr. Obi’s birthday — a day Obidients across the country are marking the occasion by giving back through acts of service — only highlights the Governor’s poor sense of judgement and timing. On that note, Happy 64th Birthday to Mr. Peter Obi — a man whose leadership inspires millions, and whose presence in Edo will always be welcome, regardless of the threats from those who see your impact as a challenge to their own inadequacies. |
We've Had Fulani, Hausa, Yoruba Presidents, But We’ve Yet To Have a True Nigerian President–Obasanjo. Olusegun Obasanjo, has voiced significant concern regarding the current condition of the country, characterising Nigeria as a nation in bondage under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted insecurity, economic challenges, and ethnic-based politics as significant obstacles hindering the country's progress. Obasanjo addressed attendees at his residence in Abeokuta during a visit from southern leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who were there for political consultations in preparation for the 2027 general elections. He believes the nation is ensnared in a pattern of ineffective leadership, leaving its people to endure hardship without any prospect of genuine transformation. He expressed that the situation has escalated to a point of significant concern, necessitating both vigilance and prayer. He encouraged Nigerians to stay engaged in the political process and to maintain their hope and interest in national matters. Obasanjo emphasised the necessity for immediate measures to address insecurity and rejuvenate the economy. He cautioned that tribal politics has persisted in dividing Nigeria and is a significant factor in its sluggish development. He asserted that the majority of political leaders today are not genuine nationalists, but rather individuals pursuing power for their own benefit. He also stated that Nigeria has not only let down its citizens but has also fallen short of the expectations of the global community. He stressed that the country cannot advance if it continues to cycle leadership based on ethnic divisions without fostering a genuine national leader who embodies the interests of all Nigerians. Obasanjo emphasised that Nigeria will persist in encountering the same challenges until it elects a leader who transcends ethnic and sectional interests. He urged for a collective spirit, genuine intentions, and dedication to the nation's welfare over individual or local aspirations. Obasanjo stated, “We have had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents…” However, we have not yet experienced a genuine Nigerian president, one who represents everyone, not just their ethnic group. Our problems will persist until we take action.

Tinubu Approves Establishment Of South-East Investment Company To Drive Industrial Growth President Bola Tinubu has granted executive approval for the establishment of the South-East Investment Company (SEIC) to drive private capital, accelerate industrialisation, and enhance competitiveness in the region. The new investment vehicle is under the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) inaugurated earlier this year. According to a statement by the presidency on Friday, the SEIC will function as a professionally governed, private-sector-led institution, operating independently of annual federal budget cycles. The company will be wholly owned by the SEDC but is expected to transition into a public-private partnership (PPP), incorporating investments from south-east state governments, private sector players, development finance institutions, and the diaspora. The statement added that the SEIC will oversee a range of targeted investment portfolios, including infrastructure, entrepreneurship, education, and other strategic interventions. “With a projected blended capital base of over 150 billion, SEIC will mobilise resources through hybrid bonds, equity participation, and callable capital structures,” the statement reads. “Pilot investments and structured fundraising activities are expected to commence in Q4 2025, supported by strong governance systems including independent fund managers, custodians, and auditors.” Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s resolve to support all regions with tailored, sustainable, and investment-led approaches to development. He charged the SEDC and the SEIC to deliver measurable outcomes that would uplift the south-east and strengthen national cohesion through shared prosperity. On his part, Mark Okoye, managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of SEDC, said the investment company represents a bold step forward in regional development. “It is more than a financial vehicle. It is a long-term strategy to unlock private capital, de-risk investment, and deliver sustainable economic growth for the South-East,” Okoye said. “We are building an institution that will stand the test of time and serve as a bridge between government priorities and private sector efficiency.” Okoye also said SEIC will actively seek all necessary regulatory registrations and compliance procedures as part of its short-to medium-term plans for full operationalisation in accordance with applicable laws and global standards. Kill Them, They Don’t deserve To Live– Adesina Reveals Buhari’s Final Order To Security Chiefs On Terror Former presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has revealed that late President Muhammadu Buhari gave a blunt and emotionally charged directive to Nigeria’s security chiefs at the height of insurgency in 2021, urging them to wipe out terrorists without mercy. In a tribute following the former president’s death, Adesina described Buhari as a patriot who cared deeply for the ordinary Nigerian and was visibly frustrated by the persistent threat of terrorism. “When insurgency reached its peak in 2021, and he held a meeting with security chiefs, he was virtually pleading: ‘Wipe out these people. Kill them. “They are haters of humanity. They don’t deserve to live. Nigerians love me, they trust me, that’s why they keep voting for me. Wipe them out. Kill them.’” He stated. At the time, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru was the Chief of Army Staff. According to Adesina, Attahiru responded with a firm commitment, promising that once the awaited military platforms were delivered, the armed forces would swiftly complete the mission. Tragically, that promise was cut short. Just a week after the meeting, Gen. Attahiru died in a military plane crash, dealing a heavy blow to the nation’s counter-insurgency efforts.

A former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that he has no ambition to join the race for the 2027 presidential election. Speaking in an interview on Arise News, El-Rufai said that all he desires at this point is to see the administration of President Tinubu, which he described as evil and a tragedy, voted out. The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said that he would go with whatever party the collective consensus decides is going to be the vehicle to remove Tinubu. According to El-Rufai, Nigerians are tired of the ruling All Progressives Congress and are looking for a credible option. “We have polled it. There is 91% disapproval of this administration across the country. 91% disapproval is the worst in Nigeria’s history,” he said. “But Nigerians are looking for a credible option. But I want to see people coming together, putting aside their differences and ambitions, and giving them an alternative to this failure of a government. That’s the key thing.” Asked if he can put aside his personal ambition for this cause with the likes of Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and so many other big politicians in the race. El-Rufai noted that big names do not equate to ambitions, adding, “You’ve mentioned my name. I have no ambition. “I just feel that having contributed to bringing about this tragedy to Nigeria by contributing to the emergence of Tinubu as president, I should contribute in my last lap, because I’m 65, I should be retiring in my last lap. “Let me contribute towards removing this evil that I believe will destroy Nigeria if left unchecked.” ‘

The Enugu State Government has announced that its state-owned airline, Enugu Air, will begin commercial operations on Monday, July 7, 2025. The announcement was contained in a post by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, Dan Nwomeh, via his official X account on Wednesday. “Enugu Air set to commence operations with inaugural commercial flight on Monday,” Nwomeh wrote. While the post noted the imminent start of commercial operations, it did not provide further information on the routes to be served, flight schedules, or booking details. A check by Nairametrics on Wednesday revealed that, with just days to the announced launch date, there is still no official booking platform or website available for Enugu Air, raising questions about the readiness of the airline for commercial passenger service. This announcement follows an earlier declaration by the state government in May that Enugu Air would commence commercial operations that same month, a timeline that ultimately did not materialize. At the time, the state government disclosed that three aircraft had been secured for the airline. Two had already been delivered to the state, while a third was expected to arrive before the end of May. In recent years, several Nigerian subnational governments have been exploring the establishment of state-owned airlines as part of broader economic and transport development strategies. Akwa Ibom State led this effort with the launch of Ibom Air, which began operations in July 2019 and has now been operating for over five years. The airline currently serves Lagos, Abuja, and several other Nigerian cities. In 2021, neighbouring Cross River State launched its own state-owned airline, Cally Air, with one aircraft. The airline was established as a joint venture between the Cross River State Government and Dana Group under a public-private partnership. In 2023, a Boeing 737 (5N-BYR) was added to the fleet, bringing the total to two, with the state government expressing plans to acquire three additional aircraft in the future. Now, Enugu State has joined the fray with Enugu Air, whose operations are scheduled to begin on Monday, July 7. As of May, the state had confirmed the availability of three aircraft, according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor.

Just In: Presidency Reveals Date Tinubu Will Sign Tax Reform Bills. The Presidency has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will, on Thursday, sign into law four tax reform bills. Naija News reports that this was made known in a statement on Wednesday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The four bills, the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, were passed by the National Assembly after extensive consultations with various interest groups and stakeholders. According to the Presidency, when the new tax laws become operational, they are expected to significantly transform tax administration in the country, leading to increased revenue generation, improved business environment, and a boost in domestic and foreign investments. The statement disclosed that the presidential assent to the bills at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, will be witnessed by the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senate Majority Leader, House Majority Leader, the Senate Committee on Finance, and his House counterpart. The Chairman of the Governors' Forum of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Coordination, the Minister of Economy, and the Attorney General of the Federation will also attend the ceremony. The statement added: “One of the four bills is the Nigeria Tax Bill (Ease of Doing Business), which aims to consolidate Nigeria’s fragmented tax laws into a harmonised statute. “By reducing the multiplicity of taxes and eliminating duplication, the bill will enhance the ease of doing business, reduce taxpayer compliance burdens, and create a more predictable fiscal environment. “The second bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, will establish a uniform legal and operational framework for tax administration across federal, state, and local governments. “The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the third bill, repeals the current Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and creates a more autonomous and performance-driven national revenue agency— the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). It defines the NRS’s expanded mandate, including non-tax revenue collection, and lays out transparency, accountability, and efficiency mechanisms. “The fourth bill is the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill. It provides for a formal governance structure to facilitate cooperation between revenue authorities at all levels of government. It introduces essential oversight mechanisms, including establishing a Tax Appeal Tribunal and an Office of the Tax Ombudsman.”

Defining Victory: What Does It Mean to “Win”? The word “win” generally implies achieving success in a contest, conflict, or effort. But when it comes to modern warfare, especially between two deeply hostile nations like Iran and Israel, the idea of victory becomes much more complex. Is it defined by destruction, survival, political gains, or public perception? After 12 devastating days of fighting, the conflict between Iran and Israel is expected to end today, June 24, 2025, as both sides have reportedly agreed to sit at the negotiating table and finalise a binding peace agreement. The war, which began on June 13, 2025, started with an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian nuclear facility, prompting swift and deadly retaliation from Tehran. Chronology of the Conflict Israel initiated the conflict by attacking what it claimed were high-risk nuclear sites in Iran. In response, Iran launched a barrage of missiles targeting Israeli civilian homes, with one strike destroying a major hospital. Despite the aggression, Israel remained focused on its objective, continuing its offensive with precision and resolve. When Israeli forces could not fully achieve their mission alone, they brought in additional support—reportedly from allies- USA military support—Underscoring their commitment to achieving concrete results, regardless of cost or consequence. Why Did Israel Attack Iran’s Nuclear Site? Israel has long considered Iran's nuclear program an existential threat. Recently, tensions escalated following a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that found Iran in breach of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations. The IAEA revealed that Tehran was enriching uranium to near weapons-grade levels, accumulating enough to build as many as nine nuclear bombs. Although Israel's initial strikes did not directly destroy Iran’s deeply buried enrichment facilities, they appeared to target high-ranking regime figures—similar to Israel’s previous strategy against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Due to the depth and fortification of Iran’s nuclear sites, any complete destruction would likely require U.S. military support. Historical Context of Iran-Israel Hostility Iran and Israel have not maintained diplomatic relations since 1979, following the Islamic Revolution. Since then, relations have grown increasingly hostile. Iranian leadership has frequently called for the destruction of Israel and does not recognise its legitimacy as a state. Notably: Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, framed Jews as historic enemies of Islam. In 2000, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei referred to Israel as a “cancerous tumour.” In 2015, Khamenei warned Israel: “They will not see the end of these 25 years,” in response to statements made after the JCPOA nuclear agreement. This long-standing hostility fuels Israel’s deep concerns over a nuclear-armed Iran. Financial Costs of the War The war has come at a steep financial price: Israel is estimated to have spent $200 million per day, with missile interception systems like David’s Sling and Arrow 3 costing $700,000 to $4 million per interception. Over 400 missiles were fired by Iran, requiring repeated defensive responses. Offensive operations, including F-35 deployments over long distances, added millions more in daily operational costs. Iran, by contrast, is estimated to have spent between $80 million and $100 million on its retaliatory strikes. Human and Structural Impact Israel’s Offence: Killed 520 Iranians, including top military officials. Damaged multiple nuclear and military installations. Iran’s Retaliation: Killed 24 Israeli civilians. Targeted Tel Aviv, destroying hundreds of homes and buildings, and severely disrupting the economic hub of Israel. So, Who Won? From a strategic standpoint, Israel appears to have achieved its primary objective: damaging Iran’s nuclear capability and disrupting its nuclear ambitions. Despite Iran's fierce retaliation and considerable destruction inflicted on Israeli infrastructure, the initial trigger concern over Iran's nuclear advancement was directly addressed. Israel’s ability to strike deeply into Iran’s defences and eliminate key military leadership, combined with its willingness to absorb high financial and human costs, suggests a tactical victory, if one defines "winning" as accomplishing military and strategic goals. However, in warfare, especially in the Middle East, no victory comes without a heavy price, in blood, resources, and long-term instability. Thanks for reading |

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his determination to ensure the establishment of state police in Nigeria. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the organisation said Nigeria has long been overdue for a state-controlled policing system. “We are aware that President Bola Tinubu is committed to having state police take off as soon as possible, going by his pronouncements and the steps his government has taken on this issue,” Ajayi stated. He noted that President Tinubu’s recent remarks in Makurdi and Abuja further underscored his determination to see the initiative implemented. Ajayi recalled that during a Town Hall meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, last Wednesday, the President reiterated his commitment to state police. He added that the declaration echoed Tinubu’s earlier remarks made on Tuesday in Abuja at the Constitution Review Legislative Dialogue on National Security, organised by the House of Representatives and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Afenifere expressed optimism that the establishment of state police was imminent, particularly as most state governors and Houses of Assembly have expressed support. Tinubu's govt. committed to unlocking inactive, untapped energy assets - Lokpobiri Obi questions Tinubu’s response to Benue killings Yul Edochie claims Nigerians don't hate Tinubu Tracing the history of policing in Nigeria, Ajayi pointed out that since the establishment of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in 1960, policing has remained centralised under the control of the Federal Government. He recalled that demands for decentralisation date back several decades. Ajayi mentioned the 2006 Presidential Committee on Police Reform led by M. D. Yusuf and the 2012 committee headed by Parry Osayande—both of which recommended decentralisation, but whose reports remained unimplemented. He also highlighted the 2021 resolutions by the governors of the 17 Southern states, who jointly called for state police in meetings held in Asaba, Lagos, and Enugu. More recently, state governors at a Council of State meeting reaffirmed the need for state police. “In view of the concurrency of opinions on the need to have state police now among the national and state legislators as well as the Executive Arm of Government, it is hoped that state police will take off very soon in Nigeria,” Afenifere stated.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Appeal To UK, France, Germany To Help Stop War With Israel. According to Al Jazeera, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to Geneva on Friday to meet with his counterparts from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in a bid to stop the ongoing fighting between Iran and Israel. The meeting comes amid escalating military strikes, with Israel targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites and Iran retaliating with missile attacks. According to Foad Izadi, a professor of international relations at Tehran University, Iran hopes the European ministers can pressure US President Donald Trump to restrain Israel’s attacks. Izadi emphasized Iran’s flexibility in nuclear negotiations but warned that Israel’s real aim is regime change, not just halting Iran’s nuclear program. “Iran has been flexible in giving concessions,” Izadi said. “The problem is that, as we saw from the Israeli defence minister, they want regime change. They know Iran’s nuclear program is not weaponizing. Most of the world knows that already. The real reason for attacking Iran is to change its government, which will not happen.” The talks in Geneva are part of a European effort to de-escalate tensions and revive diplomatic dialogue. The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the UK—known as the E3—have been coordinating with the US to persuade Iran to guarantee its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. The meeting will also include the European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas. This diplomatic push contrasts with the uncertainty surrounding US involvement, as President Trump has yet to decide whether to join Israel’s military campaign. European leaders have urged restraint from all sides to avoid further escalation and civilian casualties. The Geneva talks mark a crucial moment in efforts to find a negotiated resolution to the conflict and prevent a broader regional war.

Breaking: "₦550 Per Litre”, Oil Marketers Move To Sell Cheaper Fuel As Dangote Refinery Halts Sale. Again Petrol Landing Cost Drops –Nigerian Marketers Speak On New Price, As Drop In Petrol Prices Expected The price war between the two big players has resulted in multiple price cuts over the last few months, with the importers and oil marketers bearing the brunt as they cannot sell their imported stock. The frequent and unpredictable fuel price cuts from Dangote Refinery and the NNPCL have caused marketers major losses. Now, the marketers are teaming up to negotiate better deals with importers and secure Meanwhile, the Dangote Refinery has reportedly halted the sale of fuel to Nigerian stations amid global price fluctuations. … EXPOSED: Smuggled Nigerian Petrol Floods W’African Markets, Sells N1,700/Litre Oil marketers in Nigeria have commenced negotiations with international suppliers to secure cheaper petroleum products. This is a strategic move to stay competitive, given the low prices already offered by the Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). However, this move to secure cheaper fuel imports can give them a fighting chance to reclaim a sizeable share of the Nigerian market. Note that Dangote refinery currently sells the product at N825 while the partners retail at N865 in Lagos State. In an interview with the PUNCH, the National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, said negotiations are ongoing to get affordable petrol from foreign traders. He noted that the prices from the domestic refiners are worrisome, and many filling stations have shut down due to the inability to afford them. He said:“How do you get cheaper fuel? It is only by arrangement. Marketers will have to find a way to buy what they need to buy. The only way we can do it is to collaborate and buy products from a very dependable importer. That’s the only way we can do it.” He added that the marketers had once reached an agreement with a foreign trader to import fuel at ₦550 per litre and to pay in naira instead of dollars, and Gillis-Harry insisted that it could be done again. Gillis Harry explained: “It is negotiation. That is the power of numbers. That’s why PETROAN can do that because we have the numbers to determine how our businesses can come. But now, we have to make sure that we get it right.” The PETROAN president revealed that the association had already struck deals with some of the foreign traders in November 2024, and would now be pursuing them to a logical end. He added that while they encourage local production, the sudden price changes from the domestic refiners have also posed a major challenge for the marketers, often impacting their profits. Gillis-Harry also criticized the recent move from the Dangote Refinery to distribute petroleum products nationwide, noting that it could cause job losses among marketers and tanker drivers. This is contrary to the stand of other energy consultants, who insist that thousands of jobs will be created from the initiative.

On June 14, 2025, BAE Systems’ Typhoon multirole fighters and Airbus Voyager air-to-air refueling aircraft, key assets in British airpower, are being prepared for deployment to the Middle East amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. As reported by BBC News, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the move ahead of the G7 summit, stating the assets are being sent for "contingency support." The decision comes after a rapid deterioration of the regional security environment, with Iranian missile launches and Israeli retaliatory strikes dominating recent developments. Iran has further heightened tensions by explicitly threatening Western assets in the region, including British bases in Cyprus, should they be used to support Israel. The RAF’s increased presence highlights both operational readiness and a warning posture to deter further escalation. Follow Army Recognition on Google News at this link Strategically, deploying RAF Typhoons and Voyagers serves as a visible commitment to the collective Western deterrence posture in the face of Iranian threats toward UK, US, and French regional assets The Eurofighter Typhoon, developed by a European consortium led by BAE Systems in the UK, is a twin-engine, supersonic, multirole combat aircraft capable of performing air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. Operated by No. 903 Expeditionary Air Wing and based on RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus for Middle Eastern operations, Typhoons are typically supported by Airbus A330 MRTT Voyager refueling aircraft, allowing for extended air patrols and rapid deployment. The system falls under the air dominance and aerial refueling category of defense capabilities and directly supports forward contingency operations, a core principle in NATO-aligned air power doctrine. RAF Typhoons have a consistent operational footprint in the region, primarily as part of Operation Shader, the UK’s contribution to the coalition campaign against Daesh in Iraq and Syria. Previous deployments involved Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 Typhoon variants armed with Paveway IV precision-guided bombs and Meteor air-to-air missiles, providing both deterrence and precision strike capability. Voyagers stationed at RAF Brize Norton have regularly supported these operations by enabling in-air refueling, significantly multiplying the RAF's range and endurance across hostile or complex terrain. The Typhoon’s greatest advantage lies in its versatility and advanced avionics suite, which includes CAPTOR radar and PIRATE IRST sensor systems, allowing for multi-target tracking and high-precision engagement. Voyager tankers, with their dual role of strategic airlift and multi-point refueling, ensure force projection beyond continental basing. Their integration grants the UK the ability to sustain long-range Combat Air Patrols (CAP), airborne command nodes, and immediate QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) tasks in conflict-prone airspace. Together, these platforms allow for simultaneous deterrence, reconnaissance, and close air support missions. Strategically, deploying RAF Typhoons and Voyagers serves as a visible commitment to the collective Western deterrence posture in the face of Iranian threats toward UK, US, and French regional assets. Of particular concern is RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, which has been explicitly mentioned in Iranian warnings. Positioned likely at Akrotiri and potentially in Gulf states via temporary overflight agreements, these aircraft form a rapid reaction layer to defend shipping lanes, regional allies, and British sovereign facilities. Operationally, they can enforce air denial zones, perform defensive counter-air missions, and reassure partner nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Geopolitically, it signals the UK’s alignment with de-escalation through force posture, while remaining ready for kinetic support, should the situation worsen. The RAF is likely to deploy Typhoon FGR4 variants and Voyager KC2/KC3 models, both equipped for high-tempo contingency operations. The Typhoon FGR4's capability to integrate with Litening III pods and deploy advanced munitions such as Brimstone or ASRAAM enhances its responsiveness to a broad range of combat scenarios, from air policing to precision strikes. Voyagers will provide critical fuel support not only for RAF jets but also allied airframes operating in the theater, underlining a role beyond national air defense. This maneuver reflects a broader shift in British defense policy under the Starmer government toward flexible power projection through scalable assets. In a region facing heightened volatility, and with British infrastructure such as RAF Akrotiri now potentially within range of Iranian retaliation, the RAF’s forward deployment of combat jets and refuelers constitutes both a precautionary and political act. It provides assurance to allies, safeguards strategic interests, and signals that Britain will act decisively to protect its assets and regional stability.
