Chidimma Adetshina, who represented Taraba State, has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. Her journey to the title has been nothing short of remarkable, reflecting the resilience and grace reminiscent of the Miss Universe South Africa incident, where she was disqualified. Africa Fact Zone revealed this in a video post on X on Saturday night. According to Pop Pulse, she will be representing the country on the global stage in Mexico. “Chidimma Adetshina has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024!” the post read. “She’ll be representing Nigeria at the Miss Universe grand finale in Mexico this November. Congratulations, Chidimma,” it added. The South African-based media entertainment channel confirmed the victory in a post on its X account, #Pop_PulseZa. Meanwhile, Chidimma, in her acceptance speech, said that the victory is for all. This is, as she stated, a true call for unity. “This crown is not just for beauty; it’s a call for unity,” the winner stated. Miss South Africa Beauty Pageant 2024 saga Adetshina, 23, pulled out of the Miss South Africa Beauty Pageant 2024 earlier following criticisms from South Africans that she was not eligible to participate in the pageantry. Rejected S’African beauty, Chidimma Adetshina, crowned Miss Universe Nigeria Adetshina not given special treatment, says Murray-Bruce Her withdrawal stemmed from the information published on the organisation’s website that she was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a Mozambique mother. The organisers also affirmed that she was a naturalised South African. Citing the incessant attacks against her person and threats to her family after her withdrawal, the National Director of Miss Universe Nigeria, Guy Murray-Bruce, invited her to compete in the just concluded MUN 2024. Last week, she made her intention known about her desire to win and also get to know the Nigerian culture more. She said, “It’s been 20 years since I’ve been here, so I just wanna get to know more about Nigeria’s culture and where I really come from.” The law student further reiterated her interest in winning the Miss Universe Nigeria pageantry. “My goal is to obviously win the crown for Miss Universe Nigeria,” Adetshina had stated.

FG Signs Agreement With 3 Chinese Firms To Supply 1.4 Million Electricity Meters. The Federal government through the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) has put pen to paper with three Chinese firms to deploy 1.43 million electricity meters across the country. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed the agreement yesterday via its official X handle. It stated that the signing ceremony was held at the BPE headquarters in Abuja, with TCN’s Chief Executive, Sule Abdulaziz who was represented by Ajiboye Oluwagbenga, the Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider (TSP) and others. The three Chinese firms are; Ningbo Sanxing Medical & Electric Co. Ltd, Ningbo Sanxing Smart Electric Co. Ltd. And Messrs XJ Group Corporation. Abdulaziz hailed the project as a crucial move towards reducing Nigeria’s 7.1 million metering gap, emphasizing its potential to significantly narrow the disparity between the supply and demand of meters across the country. According to the TCN, this initiative is part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), financed by the World Bank’s $500 million facility through the Investment Project Finance (IPF) arrangement. The statement reads, “The Federal Government, through the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and Distribution Companies, has signed a contract agreement with consortium, Ningbo Sanxing Medical & Electric Co. Ltd and Ningbo Sanxing Smart Electric Co. Ltd, and Messrs XJ Group Corporation for the supply and installation of 1,437,500 smart meters across the country.” “The project is part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), funded by the World Bank’s $500 million facility through the Investment Project Finance (IPF) arrangement.” About the World Bank DISREP project In May 2024, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced that it had secured a $500 million loan from the World Bank. The facility, approved by the World Bank Board of Directors on February 4, 2021, is intended to support the Nigerian Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP) in enhancing the financial and technical performance of the DisCos. The DISREP aims to strengthen the DisCos’ financial and technical operations through capital investment and the funding of key elements within their Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), which have been approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Milestones achieved in the project The purpose of the funding is to support the procurement of meters, a Data Aggregation Platform, and provide Technical Assistance. Significant progress has been made in preparing the DISREP Program, with several key milestones achieved, including approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 3, 2022. These milestones include the signing of the Financing Agreement by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, and the World Bank, the adoption of the Program Operations Manual (POM) by the BPE and TCN, obtaining a Legal Opinion from the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the execution of the Subsidiary Loan Agreement. The DISREP Program was officially declared effective on January 31, 2023, followed by the inauguration of the DISREP Technical Committee on May 6, 2024. It was also included in the Federal Government Borrowing Plan, which received approval from the Senate Committee on May 16, 2024.

Tinubu has approved NNPC’s 2023 final dividends for petrol subsidy, affecting tax and royalty remittances to the federation. President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd’s request to use the 2023 final dividends due to the federation to cover petrol subsidy payments, according to a report by The Cable. The president also sanctioned the suspension of 2024 interim dividends to support NNPC’s cash flow, as the national oil company struggles with the financial burden of the petrol subsidy. The NNPC informed the president that it would be unable to remit taxes and royalties to the federation account due to these subsidy payments, which it termed “subsidy shortfall/FX differential.” NNPC’s financial forecast reveals that the cumulative petrol subsidy bill from August 2023 to December 2024 will reach N6.884 trillion, leaving the company unable to remit N3.987 trillion in taxes and royalties to the federation. The company had previously warned President Tinubu in June 2024 that the subsidy payments were severely impacting its cash flow, making it difficult to sustain petrol imports due to “forex pressure.” The NNPC explained that the removal of the petrol subsidy in June 2023 initially led to monthly savings of N400 billion for the federation, enabling the company to remit N2.032 trillion in taxes and royalties by January 2024. However, the devaluation of the naira led to a significant increase in the NAFEX exchange rate, which, in turn, caused the subsidy bill to escalate. The NNPC’s costs for fuel importation turned negative in August 2023 and continued to rise, reaching N833.68 billion by April 2024. This financial strain forced NNPC to seek President Tinubu’s approval to use the 2023 dividends to cover the subsidy costs. Despite previous denials by the presidency that the subsidy would be reinstated, the NNPC’s internal communications with the president now openly refer to the ongoing financial support as a “subsidy.” The administration’s official stance remains that “subsidy is gone,” even as NNPC projects that subsidy costs will exceed N5 trillion in 2024. The company uses a “derived FX rate” to keep petrol prices within the N600-N700 per litre range, with the gap between this rate and the official exchange rate constituting the subsidy/FX differential.

The Igbo has profound respect for the Oba of Benin, a highly revered traditional ruler, and the Igbos enjoys a harmonious relationship with the Bini people. Igbos residing in Edo State are peaceful, law-abiding citizens who actively contribute to the community through business and social activities, without any intention of causing discord. However, it's regrettable that certain individuals from other ethnic groups like the Yorubas Agbadorians and the Renos are inappropriately using Igbo names to create profile online to disparage the Oba of Benin, which is a misguided, unacceptable act and a clear failure for them. |

Ondo Community Women Protest Half-Naked Over Incessant Kidnapping, Killings By Armed Herdsmen The women expressed their security concerns and demanded immediate action to address the violence and restore safety in their area. Women from Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of Ondo State took to the streets half-naked to protest the relentless kidnapping and killings allegedly perpetrated by suspected herdsmen in their community. The women expressed their security concerns and demanded immediate action to address the violence and restore safety in their area. The protest is coming barely 24 hours after the killing of 34-year-old farmer Sunday Ayeni in Uba-Oka Akoko by suspected herdsmen. The enraged women —dressed in various garments and without head coverings—stormed the palace of Olubaka of Oka Akoko, Oba Adebori Adeleye, during a security meeting to voice their anger. Chanting war songs, the women condemned the recent violence and called for justice for Ayeni, as well as an end to herdsmen attacks in the region. They also reported that suspected herdsmen had raped women on their farmlands and destroyed crops. The women vowed to no longer tolerate harassment, torture, and kidnappings by herdsmen. Mrs. Abigail Ojo, speaking for the protesters, described how they had nearly abandoned their farms due to the violence and urged state security agencies to find effective solutions. In response, the monarch assured that the matter would be addressed by relevant authorities, acknowledging that Akoko communities are already struggling with security issues. He promised to present the women’s concerns to both the State and Federal Governments for urgent intervention.

Tinubu Commissions 30 CNG Buses, Reiterates Commitment To Utilise Natural Gas To Power Nigeria’s Transportation Industry. President Bola Tinubu has said utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go and an economic necessity Nigerians should embrace. The President spoke on Monday, at the State House, Abuja, when he formally commissioned 30 Innoson Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses donated to the Federal Government. THEWILL reports that twenty of the buses were donated by Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), while the NNPC donated 10. The locally made vehicles (Innoson), with the capacity to carry 100 passengers each, are hybrid powered, such that they can alternatively run on diesel if the situation demands. Underscoring the importance of embracing the CNG-powered transportation system, Tinubu noted that countries like India have mandated CNG for all commercial vehicles since 2004 and that in Nigeria, commercial vehicles make up about 80 percent of the petrol demand, which costs the country trillions of naira each month. “It is a great inspiration for me to receive these buses on behalf of the government, making it a significant innovation to the transportation system. “Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go. The solution is here. We have it and we will work on it. We promise you things will get better and prosperity will be achieved. “For many countries, especially Nigeria, with our own gas, we will work harder with productive and innovative ideas. It is an economic necessity that we should embrace,” the President said. He also lauded Innoson Motors and other members of DAPPMAN “who have been committed to change the narratives in Nigeria”. Chairman of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), Winifred Akpani, noted that the buses were designed, manufactured and delivered by Innoson Motors, a Nigerian company in Nnewi, Anambra State while assuring the President that DAPPMAN will continue to go extra mile to ease the problems of not just the down-trodden but all Nigerians. The DAPPMAN Chairman also hinted that more donations would be made in subsequent phases. “We believe that these buses will be put to use, especially since we know that more donations are coming and we thank the President for this opportunity. I’d like to state that as part of our delivery, we’ve made provision that each of these buses will have two drivers and we are going to have them trained at the facility where they have been manufactured,” said Akpani.

The Federal government through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the deployment of 10,000 agro rangers across the country. This is in a move to curtail insecurity across the food producing belt of the country which has negatively impact food production across the country in recent times. The Special Assistant to President Tinubu on New Media, Olusegun Dada disclosed this in a post on his official X handle. According to the statement, the agro-rangers initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) noting that agro rangers will help protect farmers against malicious destruction of farmlands as well as farmer herder conflict. The post reads, “As part of ongoing efforts to enhance food security in the Northern region and other parts of the country, the FG through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps(NSCDC) has deployed over 10,000 Agro Rangers across 19 states and the FCT.” “The Agro Rangers will, among other things; safeguard farmlands and protect farmers from escalating attacks, mediate conflicts between farmers and herders, and prevent malicious destruction of farmlands. While the food inflation crisis in the country is a function of many factors, insecurity has been a long term challenge and this collaboration between the NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is expected to solve a major challenge faced by farmers across the country.” The deployment of agro-rangers stems from earlier plans by the federal government through the National Economic Council (NEC) in February this year to establish agro-rangers as a short-term solution to the insecurity in the country pending when the long-term solution of state police is achieved. Widespread insecurity, particularly in the northern region, has forced many farmers to abandon their lands, resulting in a significant decrease in food production and contributing to the rising food prices nationwide. Just last week, attacks on farming communities in Benue State, known as the nation’s food basket, led to the tragic deaths of over 20 people. As of July 2024, food inflation has surged to 40.87%. In response, the federal government has floated the idea of establishing state police forces. However, this proposal cannot be implemented through executive orders or solely by an act of parliament from the National Assembly, even though the bill to create state police has already passed its second reading in the legislature.

Attack on Igbos in Lagos Will Be Met With ‘Unimaginable Revenge– Ohanaeze. Okwu, in the statement titled ‘Enough is Enough’, vowed that Ndigbo would follow up with commensurate reaction should there be any attack on them in any part of the country. Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has issued a warning to those planning to attack Igbos in Lagos state and other South-West states. The group said such an attack will be met with unimaginable revenge. This comes after a post from an X user with the moniker, Lagospedia, had called for the forced relocation of Igbo people from the region. The demand also trended on the social media, under the hashtag #IgboMustGo. In a statement made available on Thursday night, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said the Igbos will not stand idly and watch other people plot against them. He warned that any attack on Ndigbo in any part of the country would come with dire consequences. Okwu, in the statement titled ‘Enough is Enough’, vowed that Ndigbo would follow up with commensurate reaction should there be any attack on them in any part of the country. He said the people of the South-East had kept quiet for so long, hence endless unprovoked attacks on the Igbo people in other parts of the country. He asked those behind the dangerous and sinister rhetorics to desist because the Igbos are not second class citizens in the country. “We want to unequivocally declare today that Ndigbo are not cowards; our forefathers were not cowards; they were brave and so are we. “We warn those fanning this embers of discord not to take the calmness of the lion for weakness; we are not afraid and shouldn’t be pushed to the wall by faceless miscreants. “Any attack on Ndigbo by anybody will be visited with an unimaginable revenge. We are not second class citizens of this country. No one is more Nigerian than the Igbos. “For decades now, Ndigbo have borne the brunt of every crisis in this country; they have paid the price for every upheaval in the country. “This is one of the major reasons we decided not to be part of the hardship protest or whatever they called it. We knew that the moment we identify with it, they will term it Igbo protest. “Yet, the same enemies of Ndigbo, the same people who are lurking for the blood of the Igbo people are unrelenting. “However, we want to sound this note of warning to them; ‘Enough is Enough’. Any attempt to spill the blood of an Igbo man or destroy their businesses and properties will be visited with equal retaliation. “Those threats will be resisted; henceforth any attack on any Igbo man anywhere in those aforementioned areas must be revenged with every seriousness. “We are one of the cardinal pillars of this country, so nobody should threaten the Igbo in this country any longer. “We call on Ndigbo not to be afraid to reside anywhere of their choice in the country and do their businesses; they should not mind the useless threats by those who intend to set the country ablaze,” he said. The Ohanaeze Youth President tasked security agencies to immediately arrest those who originated what he called “genocidal threats against Ndigbo”. “Should the security agents fail to arrest the perpetrators and instigators of war in Nigeria, we will be left with no option than to believe that they are part of the plan. “We are also calling on the Federal Government to speak up on this matter; this should not be swept under the carpet. “The Nigerian Government should take quick measures to arrest those behind this genocidal plot. “To restore the people’s confidence, the government should arrest and prosecute all the criminals making unguarded utterances on X, inciting Nigerians against each other,” Okwu stated. Okwu re-echoed his call on Ndigbo not to participate in the ongoing protest, maintaining his earlier stand that President Bola Tinubu government was on the right track and should be given more time. “We reiterate our support for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government. “Once again, we thank him for the South East Development Commission which was supposed to be in place since after the war to cater for the Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction mantra. “We shall continue to advocate for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, additional states to be at par with other regions and correct imbalances on appointments in reflection of the federal character principles,” he further stated.
