Having sat at home for more than three months since the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), began a nationwide strike on 22 June this year, university students have declared the nation’s 49th independence anniversary on 1 October 2009, as a day of protest and demonstrations.

The students, under the aegis of Education Rights Campaign (ERC), said instead of cooperating with the Federal Government to celebrate Nigeria’s 49th Independence Day anniversary on 1 October, they would rather prefer to mobilise youths, artisans, rights’ activists and parents to protest and demonstrate peacefully against the continued shutdown of tertiary institutions in the country.

ERC National Coordinator, Hassan Taiwo Soweto and the Speaker, Students Union Legislative Assembly, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Adodo Destiny and other student union leaders disclosed this while addressing journalists in Lagos.

The students vowed to assemble in their thousands at the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Yaba, Lagos and also at the gate of the University of Benin, Benin City, where they will flag off the nationwide protest on 1 October.

They explained that the protest was limited to these areas due to logistics, lack of funds and support from other students to make the demonstration truly national. They called on other students in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to join the protest march.

The students are demanding immediate implementation of agreements reached with ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and other unions for academic activities to resume in all Nigerian universities.
