Nigerian Entreprenuer, Mimi Ubini has shared an experience she had with a pastor when she was in need of a reference letter to get cleared after she gained admission into the University of Lagos. Read her lengthy post below; It was the Eve of September I just got an admission letter from the almighty unilag. I was ecstatic! I mean Unilag is one the best Govt university we have in the country. I took my time to browse through all the requirements for processing my admission. One actually stood out; get a reference from a 1)Lawyer: I don’t know any lawyer or 2)Clergy: what does that mean?! or A pastor: Na now you come I mean I was a strong member in church that year, I don’t miss my weekly service, I wasn’t only a bench warmer on Sundays infact the assistant pastor had previously approached me according to him use “my beauty” for God. He told me to join one department 1)choir:I’ve frog voice so pass 2)pray warrior:terrible at praying and lastly 3)usher:that’s manageable. I’d ask him if I was going to get paid, he said No I should “do it for the lord” I said okay and proceed to register for bible studies on Saturday, that’s the only process you will pass through before one can work in the church. So I mean it’s a no brainer right? The pastor would def give me a reference letter, I was sister in the lord, so piece of cake! So I decide to go meet my pastor in the lord for a reference letter. I worn a long skirt and a free top, pack my natural hair in a ponytail, I mean you have to look godly when visiting a man of God. I double check in the mirror to make sure I was decently dressed, picked my admission letter and headed for my pastor in the lord’s office… I got to the office met with the receptionist. Excuse me ma please I want to see Pastor … (won’t mention names, sorry) Okay hold on a sec, she replied nicely. I sat down and admired the gorgeous interior of my pastor office, money good o, I said in my mind. Hello you can go in now! the receptionist soft but sharp voice jolted my vain thoughts. Thank you ma I replied nicely. I walked into a much more beautiful space, my pastor office is fine sha. Good morning sir, I said We exchanged pleasantries, he offered me a chilled cold drink. What brought you to my office Misan?! My pastor asked after all protocols was observed, lol. Sir I just got admission to unilag o! I said with excitement. To study what ? He asked, Philosophy sir, I said Oh congrats! We were the first set of philosophers in unilag, he said. Oh wow sir! Is it a good course sir ?! I said excited but honestly I didn’t care for the course (but I got love it) I just wanted to further my education, I didn’t want to die a semi illiterate so even if unilag gave me admission to come study the bushes and grasses I’d take it. It is a lovely course, congrats my pastor said. So wat can I do for you? He asked again. Sir please I want you to write a reference letter with your paper heading and stamp it sir, I said. He said okay and proceeded to write the letter while I sat there and screamed in my mind: UNILAG HERE I COMEEEE!!! Okay I’m done, my pastor said. My eyes lit up I stretched forth my hand to take the letter. he said no no not so fast…haaaaaaaa! You are a fine girl o. He said Thank you sir I said If you want this letter at least let me touch you small, he said Haaaaaa! Sir I’m a small girl oo I said with an innocent face. With all this thing on ur chest, let me suck ur Bosom at least. I look at him I knew he wasn’t going to give me the letter without a fight…what should I do Misan think. Okay sir but at least let me go submit the letter, wen I come back I’ll come so you can suck it. No I want it now. The pastor was adamant. I stared at the letter on his desk, I want this, I must have this letter, it means a lot to me. Come na Misan, he said. I slowly walked up to him for the sucking…sir please suck it fast I said as I muttered as I walked up to him…I got closed to the other end of the desk, I snatched the letter from his desk, head for the door I swear all this happened so fast you have no idea, I headed for the door and ran as fast as my legs could carry, all I was hearing was Misan come back here! Misan I’ll tell unilag I didn’t approve that letter, Misan come back here!! I ran with that letter, I kept running and that was the end of my sister in the lord brouhaha So wat do you think? Did I do bad for snatching and running with letter? Should I have handled differently? Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/mimi-ubini-narrates-how-pastor-wanted.html

According to a report by Punch Metro, a three-storeyed building on Alhaji Alli Lane, housing Ogba Magistrates’ Courts, Lagos State, has been disconnected by Ikeja Electric over N1.9m electricity bills. Punch Metro reports that the debt piled up for months, making the distribution company to disconnect the facility on Tuesday. A Punch Metro correspondent who visited the court on Friday observed that workers opened office windows for ventilation as there was no electricity to power the air conditioners in the building. An official who, confided in our reporter, said the court did not have a big generator to serve as an alternative source of power, describing the situation as embarrassing. “It is really shameful,” he thundered. “It is embarrassing that an institution like court was disconnected on the account of not paying electricity bills. Something like this happened some months ago too. Is it that the Lagos State Government is broke?” the official wondered. The correspondent who walked round the court corridors observed that several offices were wide open with some workers using hand fans to douse heat. It was also noted that there were skeletal proceedings which sources said might be as a result of the stuffy courtrooms. “The court has been disconnected since Tuesday and I have no idea when it will be reconnected. I learnt they owe close to N2m. But I suspect the court management was not duly notified before the disconnection,” another official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. An Ikeja Electric official, who confirmed the disconnection to Punch Metro, stated that it was the second time such would happen this year. The official said, “What kind of notification do they need? Don’t they know they owe? More so, they have their own dedicated transformer with a meter. It is whatever we read from the meter that we use to bill them. They owe about N1.9m. They owed for the months of August and September and they quickly paid for September bill. That was after they were disconnected. “They have not paid for October and November bills and we have to disconnect them again. They are not supposed to owe at all because they are maximal customers.” The spokesperson for IE, Mr Felix Ofulue, also confirmed the debt to City Round, saying that, “they were disconnected because they owe us N1.9m.” Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/drama-as-ikeja-electric-disconnects.html

Wife of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the RevolutionNow protest and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mrs Ope Sowore, has sent a message to President Muhammadu Buhari that she and her children are waiting for the return of her husband. She said she had no clear roadmap on how to handle the situation but that she had sent appeals to the United Nations and had been working with Amnesty International and many other organisations to help raise awareness and “hopefully help to secure the release” of her husband. Speaking to PUNCH on the telephone on Friday, Sowore’s wife said, “I’m concerned about what happened to my husband. It’s less than 24 hours that the Nigerian government has basically turned around and shown a gross abuse of power. I am praying and hoping that it will be resolved so that he can come home to meet me and the children. “No clear roadmap or script on how to handle a situation like this. The reason why there is rule of law is because it protects people’s basic rights and the fact that Buhari and the DSS have refused to do that is a matter of great concern. “We are currently working with many international organisations to help advocate on his behalf and we have sent several urgent appeals to the United Nations.” Sowore was arrested on August 3, 2019 over a planned protest, which he tagged ‘RevolutionNow’. The DSS accused him of planning to overthrow the government with his planned protest, the basis upon which he had been detained. Officials of the Department of State Services had on Friday invaded the Federal High Court in Abuja to rearrest Sowore, who was released alongside his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, on Thursday after they had spent over three months in the DSS custody. https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/sowores-wife-to-buhari-my-children-and-i-want-my-husband-back-home/amp/

The Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, has sacked 900 workers of the institution for various offences, its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eddy Olanipekun has said on Thursday. Olanipekun said that the decision was taken by the institution’s Governing Council in its meeting on December 5, 2019, saying that decision was in compliance with the reports of an external private audit firm contracted to undertake a holistic audit of the institutions’ staff and finances. According to him, this was sequel to the recommendation of the Visitation Panel set up by Governor Kayode Fayemi, which identified among other things over staffing, redundancy and personnel misalignment in virtually all the sections of the university as the problem hindering the institution to pay its workers. The Vice Chancellor stated that the affected staffs were 619 workers who were allegedly employed irregularly between 2016 and 2018 by the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Oye Bandele during his tenure and 228 staff who allegedly have some discrepancies in their educational qualification. Others, the Nation reports, included ghost workers and some staff who were said to be over ages of 65 and 70 for non-academic and academic workers respectively. He disclosed that the university would be able to save over N200 million monthly by the time the staff are expunged on the payroll. He said Quote “619 were illegally recruited between 2016 and 2018. Some were over-aged having clocked 68 or 69 but still working when the statute prescribed 65 for nonacademic and 70 for academic staff. “The workers were employed irregularly against university regulations within the period 2016-2018 thereby causing major personnel misalignment and skyrocketing of the university wage bill by about 100% within two years. “The situation was so bad in the university that it was the monthly contributions of members of staff who belong to some Cooperative, Thrift and Credit Societies in the University that were partly and on a monthly basis used by the then university administration to pay the salaries of those that were irregularly employed and who interestingly refused to join any of the Cooperative, Thrifts and Credit Societies. “228 members of staff could not produce/show evidence of Primary School Leaving Certificate. And there were some ghost workers whose names were found on the university payroll without being on the university nominal role. “Some members of staff presented falsified birth and educational certificates. Some of the members of staff lacked the required basic educational qualification. “Some members of staff were illegally retained in the university services after having been due to retire. There are other cases of over aged staff. Some others lacked the required basic educational qualification. “Consequently after due consideration of the issues involved, and the overall best interest of the university in being properly positioned for local relevance and global competitiveness, the Governing Council of Ekiti State University has directed that those who were found to have fallen into the categories above be disengaged of their appointments forthwith in accordance with the university regulations.” Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/12/ekiti-state-university-reportedly-sacks.html

Renowned actor and politician, John Dumelo has intimated that polygamy should be legalized in Ghana because there is nothing wrong with it. Under the country’s civil laws, polygamy is considered to be an illegal lifestyle, even though a large part of the population who are Muslims and members of the African Traditional religion do not find any problem with it. According to John Dumelo, women should also be allowed to chose multiple husbands because it is ‘perfect’ for both ways. “I feel that there’s nothing wrong with it. I mean if our brothers and sisters who are Muslims are doing it perfectly, why not Christians? Provided you can take care of your family and your two or three wives that’s fine and I mean, I speak to a lot of Muslim friends of mine and they’re okay with it, personally I don’t believe in it but I feel it’s good for Ghana.“ John Dumelo again posted this on his Facebook and his IG pages but deleted it after sometime…. Five awaiting trial inmates of the Ikoyi Medium Security Custodial Centre (Ikoyi Prison), Lagos, have been electrocuted after an electric wire snapped and fell on a cell on Monday. Punch correspondent gathered that several others were injured and rushed to hospital for treatment in the early morning incident. A source said the casualties would have been more but for the intervention of medical workers in the centre. Punch Metro gathered that more than 100 inmates were in the cell at the time of the incident. The source stated, “Actually, what happened was that while some inmates were going to the courts this morning (Monday), there was a power surge. “The surge cut off an electric wire. You know, Nigerian prisons use metal bunk beds. So, the inmates, who were close to the bunk beds, were the major casualties. “The five deceased inmates were the closest to the bunk beds and that was why they did not survive it. “If not for the medical workers in the prison, many more inmates would have died. The prison authorities called the power company and power was disconnected. The officers also offered first aid, which reduced the number of casualties.” Punch correspondent gathered that the matter had been reported to the authorities in Abuja and a delegation had visited the centre for an on-the-spot assessment. The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Francis Enobore, confirmed the incident. Enobore, in a statement he issued on behalf of the Controller General of the NCS, Ja’afaru Ahmed, described the incident as “tragic and most ill-fated.” Aregbesola has ordered a probe of the incident and directed that steps should be taken to prevent future incidents. It's one of the biggest fashion nights of the year, where the red carpet is full of supermodels, style icons and designers making a sartorial statement. And Rihanna made sure to lead the glamour as she joined Cate Blanchett and Julia Roberts at the star-studded British Fashion Awards 2019 in partnership with Swarovski at the historic Royal Albert Hall in Kensington, London, on Monday night. The superstar, 31, made an entrance in a halterneck mint green satin mini dress and wrapped a matching sheer dress coat over her statuesque frame. Upping the style ante, the singer wore a pair of complementing gloves and satin strappy heels. She sported a statement diamond choker around her neck and diamond earrings. The beauty mogul, who's brand Fenty won the Urban Luxe category, worked her raven-coloured hair into long braids as she posed for photos with ASAP Rocky.
