SolaOmoniyi: Former presidential aide Reno Omokri argues that Nigerians often overlook the country’s progress in education, economy, energy, and inflation, insisting that “Nigeria happening” also means positive developments.
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has called on Nigerians to acknowledge the progress being made across several sectors of the country instead of attributing national identity only to negative outcomes.
Omokri, in a statement on Monday, said the phrase “Nigeria has happened to me” is often used to describe setbacks, while the many positive developments in the country are overlooked.
According to him, Nigeria is experiencing measurable improvements in education, the economy, electricity supply, inflation, and fuel exports.
Omokri disclosed that more than 600,000 Nigerians have benefited from student loans provided by the federal government to enable them pursue higher education. He described the initiative as one of the most impactful social policies under the current administration.
He noted that Nigeria’s inflation rate dropped to 20.12% in August 2025, from 21.88% in July, reflecting a gradual decline in food prices across the country. He contrasted this progress with Argentina’s worsening economic situation, adding that several other countries are struggling to manage inflation.
Omokri also pointed to progress in the energy sector, stating that Nigeria recently achieved its highest-ever electricity generation output, with a peak of 5,801.84 megawatts and a maximum daily output of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh).
He explained that Nigeria has moved from being Africa’s largest petrol importer in 2023 to becoming the leading exporter of refined petroleum products in West Africa, a shift that has contributed to more stable fuel prices locally.
treesun: The Federal Government on Sunday dismissed claims by some international platforms and online commentators that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Sunday, described the claims as false, divisive and harmful to Nigeria’s peace.
“The Federal Government strongly condemns and categorically refutes recent allegations by certain international platforms and online influencers suggesting that terrorists operating in Nigeria are engaged in a systematic genocide against Christians.
“Such claims are false, baseless, despicable, and divisive,” Idris said.

He stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges should not be misrepresented as religiously motivated.
“Portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against a single religious group is a gross misrepresentation of reality.
“While Nigeria, like many countries, has faced security challenges, including acts of terrorism perpetrated by criminals, couching the situation as a deliberate, systematic attack on Christians is inaccurate and harmful,” the minister added.
According to him, terrorists have attacked Nigerians across faiths, not sparing Muslims, Christians or people of other identities.
“These criminals target all who reject their murderous ideology, regardless of faith.
“Muslims, Christians, and even those who do not identify with any religion have suffered at their hands,” he stated.
Highlighting security operations, Idris said between May 2023 and February 2025, security forces neutralised 13,543 terrorists and criminals, while nearly 10,000 hostages were rescued across the country.
He recalled that the leadership of Nigeria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, Ansaru, was also recently captured.
“Only last month, the top leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan — commonly known as ANSARU — was captured in a well-coordinated counter-terrorism operation,” the statement noted.
Idris further explained that over 700 convictions had been secured in the prosecution of Boko Haram suspects.
“In the fight against terrorism, Nigeria has made significant strides in prosecuting Boko Haram suspects.
“To date, we have successfully prosecuted seven batches of suspects, securing over 700 convictions,” he said.
He dismissed the genocide narrative as a distortion of Nigeria’s multi-religious reality, adding that the country’s leadership reflected inclusivity.
“Christianity is neither endangered nor marginalised in Nigeria. It is doubtful that foreign interlopers into Nigerian affairs are aware that the current heads of both the Armed Forces and the Police Force are Christians, a fact that underscores the inclusivity of our national leadership,” Idris stressed.
The minister also pointed to international recognition of Nigeria’s interfaith harmony.
“In March of this year, the inaugural Commonwealth Peace Prize was awarded to two Nigerian religious leaders, Rev. Dr. James Movel Wuye and Imam Dr. Muhammad Nurayn Ashafa, co-founders of the Interfaith Mediation Centre,” he said.
He urged international media and commentators to avoid sensationalism and divisive rhetoric, and instead support Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism.
“We urge the international media and other commentators to act with responsibility and have respect for facts.
“All stakeholders are advised to avoid ignorance, sensationalism, and divisive rhetoric, and instead support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in the fight against terrorism and all forms of criminality,” Idris added.
Sane minds know that the FG will never admit that. But, from the look of things that's exactly what it looks like because, this tinibu government is not doing anything to stop the kpaings and no arrests and prosecution has been made. That means he is aiding and abating the terrorists.

Information from the Bank’s website shows $500m will go to a digital infrastructure project while $250m will support healthcare security programmes in West and Central Africa.
The digital project, known as the Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth in Nigeria, aims to expand broadband access in neglected and rural areas.
The scheme has a total price tag of $1.6bn, with the World Bank providing $500m and other investors expected to contribute the balance.

The project will be carried out through a special purpose vehicle, with the Federal Government holding a majority stake while private investors take the rest.
In addition to the World Bank’s loan, other financiers such as the African Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and the Islamic Development Bank are expected to contribute.
The $250m health loan will be channelled into Phase II of the Health Security Programme and overseen by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the Finance Ministry.
The initiative is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to detect and respond to public health emergencies in line with lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since June 2023, Nigeria has secured $8.4bn in new loans from the World Bank alone, making the country one of its biggest borrowers in Africa.
Economist Adewale Abimbola said, “Borrowing isn’t inherently bad, if it’s concessionary and tied to viable, revenue-generating projects, then it’s a smart move. The key is in implementation and accountability.”

But another analyst, Aliyu Ilias, warned that Nigeria’s debt stock has ballooned from about ₦87tn under Muhammadu Buhari to ₦149tn under Bola Tinubu, with forecasts pointing to ₦180tn.
“When former President Muhammadu Buhari left office, the debt stock was around N87tn. Now, it’s approximately N149tn, and projections suggest it could hit N180tn,” Ilias warned.
He questioned the wisdom of piling up new loans even as the government claims higher revenues from subsidy removal and increased tax collections.
“Why are we borrowing more when we’re supposedly earning more?” he asked.
Data from the Debt Management Office shows Nigeria’s debt to the World Bank alone has climbed to $18.23bn, accounting for almost 40 per cent of the nation’s total external debt.
Critics argue that rising debt service costs are draining funds needed for schools, hospitals, infrastructure and jobs, leaving Nigerians to bear the brunt of a reckless borrowing binge.

ogododo: The #EndSARS movement was a nationwide protest demanding the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit notorious for brutality and extrajudicial killings. It also sought broader reforms to end systemic police violence in Nigeria.
Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, popularly known as Buhun Barkonun, a prominent critic of the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, has died during a hotel encounter with a woman in Abuja. He was 47.
The #EndSARS movement was a nationwide protest demanding the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit notorious for brutality and extrajudicial killings. It also sought broader reforms to end systemic police violence in Nigeria.
Yusuf, who served as Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, reportedly died days after lodging in the hotel on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, in the Karu-Jikwoyi area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, Yusuf checked into the hotel with a woman identified as Ruth. During his stay, he declined meals but consumed large quantities of alcohol.
On the morning of his death, Ruth allegedly purchased an energy drink for him after noticing his deteriorating condition. Shortly after taking it, Yusuf collapsed into a coma.
Hotel staff and Ruth rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have since opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
Yusuf, widely known as Buhun Barkonun (AMAC), had gained notoriety as one of the loudest voices opposing the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in the Federal Capital Territory.
In October 2020, Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, in a letter addressed to then-Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, urged #EndSARS protesters to vacate major roads in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He argued that the demonstrations were disrupting economic and social activities in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the Indigenous people of the FCT, Yusuf conveyed their frustration, warning that they were on the verge of losing their temper.
While expressing anger over the deaths recorded during the protests, the group also lamented the wider impact of the road blockages, noting that farm produce was rotting and daily wage earners were being starved of income as customers could no longer access them.
The letter read: “We the members of the Indigenous People of the FCT wish to express our unreserved displeasure and anger at the blockade of our roads and the disruption of economic activity.
“We write to express our offense, our disgust and our anger at the activities of these so called EndSARS protesters and their blockage of roads, tributaries that function for the economic activities of the FCT residents, not to mention the needless loss of lives.
“We do not want this, and we reject these continued protests, particularly the form these blockages are taking.
“Indeed, the laws that make these protests lawful, reserve in the exercise of all vested human rights the fact that where the right of one person ends, the right of another begins.
“When the protest started, we members of the Abuja community gave it our support because indeed it was a genuine cause for the abolition of SARS, a unit of the police force that had begun to commit illegal activities against Nigerians.
“The government kept its word and listened to the protesters.
“It is however unfortunate that despite these requests being granted, the protesters have refused to return to their businesses and work.
“The freedom of assembly is not permitted to deny others their freedom of movement. That is an infringement and should not be tolerated or accepted by the government or its law enforcement institutions.
“We, therefore, call on the Federal Government to enforce the prohibition of these demonstrations and blockages of our roads.
“If the protesters must continue with the exercise of their rights, they must do so in such a way that recognizes and upholds the right of movement of other FCT residents.”
In a Facebook post on October 22, 2020, Yusuf claimed the protest had been hijacked.
“#IStandWithMyOpinion the #EndSARS protest have been hijacked and it’s now invoking security situation and we cannot destroy the peace and unity in FCT because we don’t have anywhere else to go. If you want to invoke security tension we will not support,” he wrote.
Yusuf also gave the protesters a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate the roads of the capital territory.
In a video attached to the post, Yusuf spoke about his earlier ultimatum, saying, “Let me also say the ultimatum that my group gave was 48 hours and the 48 hours just elapsed yesterday before the minister have bound all protests and all that.
“That is to say I have not sent anybody yet to do anything to anybody or to engage the people as I said. Now it's very simple, I wish to engage the people positively or negatively based on my assessment and how much I love Nigeria. Nigeria is our own and I still stand on the opinion that if only we want to repair and fix Nigeria, we must not destroy it because the people that have invoked so many security situations all over the globe today they are looking for a way to arrest the issue or even stop it.
He argued that the #EndSARS protests had been hijacked and called for a re-strategy if they were to continue.
While affirming his passion for Nigeria, he compared the situation to past movements, warning that, like Boko Haram, such actions could spiral beyond control. He acknowledged that some protests in the past had made him proud, such as the Bring Back Our Girls campaign.
“Today you are blocking Apu, tomorrow you are blocking Beda and about tomorrow and you still say it is peaceful. You cannot hold Nigeria to ransom, you can't hold Abuja to ransom. I insist, it's not right,” he said.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians have been reacting to his death.
For instance, Chibueze (@chibuking300), in post on X, wrote, “Is this the fct italics anti-endsars guy?”
Replying to the post, RENTED Victor! (@Purevictor) wrote, “You sabi the slowpoke wella.. The dustbin that threatened an entire region against protesting in Abuja.
“With all his APC money he cudnt afford himself a decent death.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of his aide.
In a statement released on Saturday through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu described the late Yunusa as a dedicated public servant and a vital bridge builder whose contributions to community development were invaluable.
He extended his condolences to Yunusa’s family, friends, associates, colleagues, and the residents of the FCT over what he called an immense loss.

IGBOSON1: Coming from someone like you, Otti should wear such a tag like a badge of honour! Abians in particular and Ndigbo in general are more than happy with Ottis' governance, yet a Igbo-hater like you comes along and thinks anyone actually gives a fck about your opinion! Acording to you, 'Otti is a 'disgrace', but the ilk of Uzodinma and Tinubu are Gods gift to Nigeria' abi!?
aswani: Oga bikonu rest, Biafra is an Ndigbo ideal and there is nothing wrong in it except when you want to start pulling other people's with their own distinct culture inside against their wishes.
Why is the advocation for a Biafran republic non existent amongst non-Ndigbo's? Even Ikwerre and Ìka, amongst others, that have a tenuous link of sorts to Ndigbo don't want to be in or associated with Biafra.
Abeg don't urinate on us and tell us it's raining.
The pettiness continues.. Oga let me tell you the honest truth, you are too small to tell me my history and am not that kind of man that will allow his enemy to tell him concocted and fabricated lies una dey call "history" that is from lagos, Ibadan gutter press.
If you are not mischievous you won't be telling me that Biafra that has been in existence long before Nigeria was created by the British, is an Igbo project. Who told you that?
The reason why you think that, the advocation for a Biafra republic is nonexistent in none Igbos is because of, diivide and rule that was introduced by Britain, FG of Nigeria and backed by yoruba media.
BATified2023: if ibos didn't kill other people's leaders n leave their, will those people come to play?
If yorubas and Britain didn't support Gowon in abandoning the aburi accord agreement and committing homicide on Igbos that were in the northern region, will there be anything like bad blood between the two tribes?
Don't forget in a hurry that about four Yoruba men participated in that coup.
BATified2023: it's obvious u don't know your history or your father lied to u, minority tribe didn't support Biafra n that was y Isaac adaka baro fought against Biafra, not only that they refused to return your properties and call it abandoned property because they felt u made them a war collateral damage.
The problem with u people is that u are so egocentric to realize your mistake, u will rather prefer to argue blindly than admit u are wrong.
So because u had issues with Northerners n they are dealing with u, does that mean u should encroach other people's region?
Same mistake u lots are still making till today n getting messed up for it
I should be telling you that. It's either you decided to be mischievous out of hate, or your father lied to you. How can you say that the people you are referring as "minorities" didn't support Biafra yet, many of them were in the Biafran army even Ojukwu's second in command is from the so-called "minority tribe".
This is exactly the reason why I said that, my enemy can never tell me my history, I will never allow that because there's every tendency he will tell me lies.
If you say the minority tribes did not support Biafra just because Boro fought against Biafra, I will equally say that the minority tribes did not support Nigeria either because, col. banjo, col. Ajuzie and many others fought against Nigeria too.
Lastly, the people you said I encroached their land are our people. We are related by blood than you so remove your mouth and eyes in our affairs. Nobody made you their mouth piece.
In the 18th and 19th century, you invaded people's lands and made them yorubas by force. But here you are today accusing Igbos of the same thing you did.
aswani: So Ibibio, Efik, Kalabari and Ogóni, for example, were Biafrans àbi? You are not serious.
They were only alongside under Ndigbo in The Eastern Region as part of the Nigerian Federation, nothing more.
Biafra has always being an Ndigbo project, either in the 60's or currently. Stop lookimg to drag other people into your incoherent project, they didn't buy into it then and sure as hell wouldn't do so now.
You are still showing your pettiness here. If you say or believe that the bolded were never Biafrans, then educate us on who they were before the British came to this part of the world to create Nigeria in 1914.
The name "Nigeria" only came into existence in 1914 by lugard's mistress but, the people of the old Eastern region had been in existence before the 6th century so, stop mentioning "Nigeria if you really want us to go deeper into the history of the people una dey always call "minority".
Below is the proof that before the creation of Nigeria in 1914 by the British, Igbos and the people you're calling the "minority" have been staying together as one without divide and rule syndrome by people like you.
