In this post, we will look at the important factors you should consider when getting a fairly used laptop that you intend to use in developing software applications both web, desktop and mobile.

A fairly used laptop has never been a bad idea as latops are one of the very durable inventions and due to the high cost (you know what is happening to our economy with respect to dollar), it might be wise to get fairly used laptops especially if you are on a budget or starting out on development and need one as quickly as possible.


Firstly, we would start with the less obvious:

1. A Perfect Keyboard Can't be Over-emphasized

With just a "$' key not working or an 'E' not working might mean that your productivity drops by 80%, This can be a frustrating experience, thus before getting a fairly used laptop for programming purposes, open a text editor, ensure you key in all the keys once, and gently at that. if any key does not reflect at the first trial, then that is a red flag, leave that system unless that key is irrelevant: like the num keys at the far right of the keyboard.

If the keys are not soft and gentle, that is also a red flag, you would not want to know what a difficult to key in keyboard will do to your speed of work and stress levels.

As a programmer, beyond good storage and speed, having a comfortable keyboard is not an option. It helps speed up your work.

2. Wide Screen / Monitor

For a programmer, you need a widescreen, small screen laptops may look sexier, but except if you want to carry an additional screen around every time or you want to put on a microscope as goggles, check the screen size: at least 15.6 inches is a good start.

This is because, as a programmer, you have to split screens even when you are not at home or in the office, having a widescreen will profit you in this regard.

3. Minimum RAM Specifications

Does a programmer need a PC with much RAM? Yes. For developers, afore times, browsers were light-weighted, but with Chrome almost leading, it sucks up RAM, if you would like to test your application on the web, you may likely make use of Chrome. I recommend minimum RAM requirements to be 8GB, anything less than this WOULD FRUSTRATE YOU.

4. MEMORY: HDD/SSD?

Yes SSD's are faster but HDDs are manageable, if your budget can handle it, go for SSD and opt in for cloud storage as a backup, but if not, HDDs are still great. In terms of Memory size, you need at least 0.5 Terabyte of memory.

5. Processor Speed Limit

Anything above 1.8GHz is good enough. Remember the processor speed indicates how fast computations occur in the ALU of your microprocessor. Getting an Internship placement, industrial training or job in schlumberger Nigeria is quite a transparent process. During my time, I applied for industrial training i.e  internship in schlumberger but I received a reply some months after that I did not meet the criteria. One of my other friend who applied just as I did was called further for test interview.

I found the difference in our applications even though I learnt the hard way, but I would love to unleash some of the differences, hopefully it would help you when you submit your own application.

In as much as schlumberger has some reserved industrial training and internship positions for exceptional students from various departments,( more like a tradition of hand picking top 3 from some departments in different institutions), You can still apply and get to intern with schlumberger even if you are not "exceptional".

Thus, if you want to start your internship in schlumberger in July 2019, you should drop your application at least by March 2019. Earlier than that can be ok preferably.

To increase your chances of being called up for an interview or a test, you should develop the following areas of your personality, even if it entails going for a training or undertaking a position in an organization or  association.

The abilities highlighted in this category of personality development includes:

- Good Listening and communication Skills
- Ability to get things done
- Leadership skills

- Target Oriented
- Creativity - Ability to think outside the box

I always encourage students to not sacrifice everything at the altar of making a first class, that you made a first class degree does not guarantee you a placement.

Some of these skills can be gotten by taking a leadership position, engaging in a challenging project, solving a problem in the society etc.

3. Craft your resume to suit Schlumberger Values

I used the word "craft" because Schlumberger is not just like a traditional, conventional company where you throw in your generic application and hope you are called.

If you want to get to intern in schlumberger, you should take time to build your resume, tailoring it down to emphasize that you embrace their culture and can easily adapt to their work ethics, how you would do this, is solely up to you.

I would recommend checking out some resume samples online or downloading a simple resume template. I personally do not advocate using CV for applications like this. See the differences between both here.

In crafting your resume, point out your personal qualities conspicuously. This is one difference between my rejected application and my friends accepted application. While I was busy listing my secondary school, primary school, date of birth .... my colleague took time to decorate his resume with his accomplishments,his personal qualities and areas it was exhibited.

4. Prepare for the Schlumberger Internship Interview

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is the Federal Government agency with the mandate of developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry. The Fund hereby invites applications from qualified Nigerians to apply for the 2018/19 Undergraduate, Masters and PhD scholarships for students in Nigerian Federal Universities.

How to Apply for PTDF Scholarship 2019
Online application form can be accessed from the APPLICATION WEBSITE at no cost to applicants. Instructions on how to access the online form is stated on the PTDF website. Applicants are advised to read through the requirements before applying.

To start the application process for 2019 PTDF Scholarship, applicants are required to key-in their email address and select a password for a pin to be generated. The generated pin would enable applicants to access the form and complete their bio data.

APPLICANTS ARE TO PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Application is restricted to Federal Universities only
Possession of valid admission letter into the University is compulsory for all applicants
Postgraduate applicant’s admission letter should be within a validity period of 12 months
Postgraduate applicants who meet the requirements shall be shortlisted for interviews before final selection of successful candidates
Undergraduate applicants must have completed their first year and are currently in their second year of studies
Only undergraduate applicants undertaking studies in oil and gas related fields will be considered and the final selection shall be based on the grades on their transcripts
Admission for part-time studies shall not be considered for all category of applications
The scholarship is highly competitive and merit driven. Selection of candidates shall be based on equitable representation of the 36 States of the Federation and Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
CRITERIA, REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION PROCESS FOR LSS POST GRADUATE:

A selection panel will be constituted to assess applications using the following criteria;

Academic merit as evidenced by quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired and relevant publications to be referenced by applicants
Membership of professional bodies
The viability of the study/research plan (PhD applicants only)
All applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose stating the reason(s) they wish to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and its expected impact on national development
ELIGIBILITY &  REQUIREMENTS FOR PTDF SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2019:
A). (LSS) Undergraduate:

Applicants must be full time students in any of the Federal Universities
Applicants must be in their second year of study
Course of study should be related to oil and gas industry
Students must have been admitted into the University in 2017/18 academic year only
Possess 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO including English Language and Mathematics
Possess a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4 which is equivalent to 2.1 in the first year for the 2017/18 batch of students
Applicants should provide their transcripts for the first year of study
Documents Required for 2019 PTDF Scholarship Application
Undergraduate applicants who meet the above requirements are to upload the following documents:

Evidence of statement of WAEC/SSCE/NECO results with at least 5 credits, including English Language and Mathematics
Letter of admission into the University
First year academic transcript(s)
Evidence of state of origin and local government
Personal statement of a minimum of 100 words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study

B). (LSS) MSc. (Requirements for application):

Applicants must possess full time admission letter into any of the Federal Universities
A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an oil and gas related field or a 2.2 with a minimum working experience of 2 years in the oil and gas industry;

Who can Apply for Shell Scholarship?

The merit-based scholarships are in two categories:

The Areas of Operation Merit Award - open to indigenes of SPDC’s operational areas in Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers States.

We are well aware that SIWES- Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is conducted at  several levels in some institutions – universities and polytechnics. Some universities undertake siwes for 200, 300 and 400 Levels. However, the ones taken most serious is the 6 month/1 Year(Polytechnic) SIWES program mostly by 400 Level students. Benefits of obtaining a good SIWES Placement.

A lot of students do not get to appropriately benefit from SIWES programs probably because they do not even know why they are doing so. To many, it is just a requirement and a sharp way of making a 5.0 or 4.0 depending on your GP scale, to some they just need to do it, so that they can fill their log books etc. Your understanding of the aim and the benefits will not only help you in optimizing the opportunitity, it will also speak out in your defense and if your defense rechoes the vision of SIWES, then you  have merited the score.

 CONDITIONS/REQUIREMENTS IN GETTING A SIWES PLACEMENT ABROAD
There are a lot of internship / siwes placement offers abroad and you will likely be tempted to undergo your industrial training there. However, before you leap into it, take a look at these conditions that should be met.

Such a place of industrial attachment must correlate to your discipline
You should have a letter of offer of a place of industrial attachment addressed to you by the company
A letter addressed to the coordinating unit confirming the offer of a place to the student by the company locatred abroad
A detailed training program to be followed by the student may be considered acceptable since the student will not be visited by any ITF officials or SIWES coordinator

SIWES DOCUMENTS: HOW TO USE THEM

LETTER TO THE EMPLOYER (Appendix C): This document introduces the student as a bona fide student of the institution and also requests some obligations and roles on the part of the employer in ensuring that the student benefits from the work experience.

PLACEMENT LETTER (Appendix C): Addressed to the student. Contains the expected roles and obligations of the student while on training.

ASSUMPTION OF DUTY FORM(Appendix C): This is to be completed by the student and the employer on reporting in industry and returned to the coordinating unit within a week of commencenment of training. The form seeks information on the actual location of the student as well as contact numbers to enable visiting personnel from the institution contact and supervise the student in the workplace. The completion and return of the assumption of duty form is important in compiling the supervision roster of visiting staffs.

SPE-1 FORM(Appendix B) This is to be completed by the student and the employer and returned to the nearest ITF AREA OFFICE within a week of reporting in the industry. The submission of the form confirms to the ITF that the student has commenced training and enables the FUND to make arrangements for the payment of allowances. Failure to comply in due time can result in delays in payment of allowances.SCAF introduced by ITF ascertains dates of commencement of training by the student.

ITF FORM 8(Appendix B). This is to be used for the end of training evaluation.It has a column for the affixation of your passport photograph and it is to be completed by the student and the employer at the end of the work experience and returned under a confidential seal to the institutions coordinating unit by the employer.

SUPERVISORS LOG BOOK: Here the supervisors use this for monitoring of students on SIWES.
SIWES Supervision Assessment Form(Appendix B): Completed by the student and the employer and forwarded to the nearest ITF Area Office at the end of the training

The Log book(Appendix C): Of course you know what this is for. Recoding of the day to day activities of the student.

REPORTING TO ITF AREA OFFICE
Remember, during the first week of reporting in industry, you are required to complete and process your assumption of duty form and SPE-1 Form or SCAF form and forward them to the coordinating unit of your institution and the nearest ITF Area office respectively.

THE LOG BOOK: HOW TO KEEP AND FILL
The log book is the major document that shows the extent and scope of work performed and the quality of the experience that you have received.  It is tantamount that you keep your log book current by ensuring that you record the day to day activities. Do not keep them till a later date, there is a tendency to forget and lose vital points

The following is required of you in your log book:

Fill the initial pages correctly: Personal information, Institution, employer etc
Week No and Month No should be indicated serially from the first week/month to the last
Make entries of daily learning activities in the spaces provided and avoid using same / symbols to indicate that you performed same activities as the previous day. Instead record them individually as no tow jobs carried out on different days are the same no matter how similar they may seem.
Make entries using past terms since you are reporting
Provide sketches, diagrams and graphs to illustrate your understanding of the processes, equipments and machinery you came across during your learning activities. If the spaces procided is not adequate enough, you can attach additional sheets. Avoid cutting and pasting photocopies of diagrams, flowchars from manuals as much as possible. Drawing them yourself enhances your understanding of the concepts deployed.
Your monthly write up should be a logical summary of the work experience undertaken  during this period.

The last 5 pages of your log book are reserved for comments and observations from the institution based supervisors and ITF officials who will be paying visits to you to monitor your progress during training. NOTE THAT SUPERVISORY CHECKS ARE UNANNOUNCED THUS MAKE SURE YOUR LOG BOOK IS AVAILABLE.

IB PLC Hero’s Foundation Kickstart is International Breweries PLC’s corporate social investment (CSI) initiative run by its subsidiary IB PLC Hero’s Foundation. It is aimed at instilling a culture of entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths by encouraging them to develop their big ideas into sustainable businesses or expand their existing businesses through the provision of material and financial support which include:

ELIGIBILITY:

The competition is open to Nigerians between the ages 18 to 35 years who live and have their businesses in the following states: Abia, Anambra, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Imo and Rivers states.

Applicants must be at least 18 and at most 35 years with valid identification (e.g National I.D; Drivers License; International Passport; Voters Registration, etc) as at the last day of the application period.
He or she must be willing to operate the business on a full-time basis.
Should have an innovative business idea in need of a startup capital.
Or already have an existing small business needing capital to expand operations.
Energetic and entrepreneurial in approach.
Should be able to read and write.
Training programme

Successful applicants will then undergo an intensive one-week business training. The modules for the training will include:
Human Resources
Business Plan Writing
Book Keeping
Income Statements
At the end of the training, applicants will be given one month to write the final competing business plan.

Final Selection

Each judge is given a copy of each submission document for review.
Judges convene to interview applicants on their business plans.
Business plan and interviews for each applicant are rated and scores aggregated to determine winners (Kickstarters).
The outcome of the judges’ decision remains confidential until the day of the award ceremony.
The decision of the judges is final and cannot be contested.
Kickstart Awards

This will take a form of a grand event and winners will be announced and presented with their prizes. It will be a high profile event with government functionaries and business persons in attendance.
Mentoring & Monitoring

The awardees will have access to carefully selected expert assistance through mentorship and coaching for the period of a year. The Kickstarters are under the obligation to observe and implement the advice as tendered by the mentors. There will be monthly update on the progress made and business performance which will be shared with the Foundation and Intafact Management.

QUALIFYING BUSINESSES/ACCEPTABLE PROPOSALS

Over the years, experience have taught us that Dragnet exams - especially for internships put tears in the eye of students. For instance, Exxon Mobil internship 2018 exams was organized by Dragnet and those who took the exams came back with a unified story complaining how the questions were staring at them. I had a similar experience when I took Chevron Internship Exams which was organized by Dragnet too.

The funny thing is that a lot of  students who were shortlisted for Chevron I.T exams who also took part in the Exxon Mobil exams on hearing that the exam is being handled by Dragnet, they abandoned Chevron I,T exams. Why? Dragnet's exam is tough!  Do they think we are competing for the position of the Senior manager? I wish this article could get to them.

So many people will keep this experience to themselves and wait for you to go and fail but I want to use this medium to expose the secrets to dragnet questions, how to answer them and prepare for them. At the end of this post, you will be getting acquainted with their exam structure and be ahead of others.

As I was going through  files in my PC this morning, I found some dragnet test questions  I wish I saw before that Chevron internship Exam. Purely dragnet. I will be given out this files for free in this article.

How to Pass Dragnet Test
  Having established what Dragnet is, by experience over the years, we have discovered that Dragnet questions follow a format. The difficulty level depends on the purpose of the exam. For undergraduate scholarships, they are comparatively easier. Now before going for Dragnet Exams prepare for the following kind of questions.

Comprehension Questions.
This is not the type of comprehension questions you are used to. You will be given a passage to read and usually five questions will be asked with reference to it. The questions tests your comprehension of the given passage. at first,  what I do is just read through with a speed to get the subject matter,  glance through the questions then read again, this time slower.  You do not need to understand the words, you only need to be able to draw deductions.

The questions may come in this form. You would be given a statement and asked to say if:

a. True

b. False

c. Cannot say

Whether or not the statement in question is factually true if it cannot be proven from the passage to be true. Do not say it is true. Do not it is false either unless it is false from the passage.

The question may come in other forms like Which of these statements is true according to the passage.

Generally, in whatever form it appears, only ensure that your answers are deductions from the comprehension passage, do not invent yours add to or use facts that you know (whether true or not) which was not covered in the passage.
