tkb417:the gist is that Benzema amd Nasri were disruptive influences in the dressing room. both have a history with Henry/Gallas. So the Arrow decided to dump them. |

ilugunboy: Sagamite:she is a UK based football journalist. i happen to agree with her comments on this group. She is spot on, unfortunately. |
Hammer time!!!! Johnny Boy, your turn don reach. Carry go. |
Thank f*** for Argentina in Group B because this is a nothing group without Diego Maradona's troop of incredibly talented individuals. As with Domenech, we can only assume that Maradona's failings as a coach and human being will not hinder the progress of a team with attacking options like Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito and Martin Palermo. When we were pondering whether to take Emile Heskey or Darren Bent, it's enough to make you feel physically sick. It's probably only the maverick presence of Maradona that makes them anything but outright favourites for the title. But they are quite rightly massive favourites to get out of a group featuring two of the dourest, ball-achingly dull teams in the World Cup in Nigeria and Greece. Lars Lagerback's Nigerians are a pretty limited bunch - as indicated by Danny Shittu's presence despite not getting a single game for Bolton this season. Greece are Greece - think Euro 2004 but with even less flair. The South Koreans are rather more interesting, having crept under the radar somewhat because of the absence of a big-name foreign manager and the intriguing presence of North Korea. But this is a South Korean side who were impressive in qualifying from a difficult Asian group and have since recently beaten both the Ivory Coast and Japan - and they didn't need two own goals. Win their opening game against Greece and there might just be a mouthwatering second-round clash with France just around the corner. No be me talk am o, na Sarah Winterburn |
We all know Raymond Domenech is an idiot but he's an idiot who has a rather good set of players at his disposal, who will ignore any idiotic suggestions from their outgoing coach. With the likes of Franck Ribery, Florent Malouda, Yoann Gourcuff, Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry (not a bad option off the bench) at his disposal, even Chris Hutchings could lead this French squad into the knock-out stages. Especially with the kind of 'luck' that got them past Ireland in the play-off. Usually, you'd give the hosts a decent chance of getting out of their group - especially when they come into the tournament on the back of an unbeaten run stretching back to November - but this South African side is rotten. They stink the place out. The most impressive win from that run was a 1-0 win over Denmark, while draws at home against Jamaica and Namibia hardly suggest France should lose any sleep over facing a team that even failed to qualify for the African Nations tournament this year. The other qualification spot is a difficult one to predict, especially after Mexico gave England a fright at Wembley. But watch England's first two goals and you'll see exactly why Mexico will not be easing their way through to the group stages in South Africa. Although neat in the attacking third, defensively they're a shambles. Imagine that being exploited by Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, Uruguay's rather handy pair of strikers. Seven goals in two recent games against Switzerland and Israel would suggest that there's goals in them there hills for the South Americans. views of Sarah Winterburn |
oisehumen:okay. i have seen it there now. i still have my doubts as it does not make much sense. Arsenal have lots of central attacking midfielders,Joe cole will not be guaranteed a starting place (the very problem he had in Chelsea) Arsene needs to strengthen other areas not messing with what ain't broken/ i see he also put a bit in for Mark Shwarzer |
source please. i just spoke to someone in Joe Cole's management and she was unable to confirm it. i don't doubt the possibility of the story but if his management can't confirm it, e be as e get. |
NIKIWE BIKITSHA: HIGH HEELS - Jun 04 2010 16:05 'Not everyone likes sex." This was an amusing and rather unconvincing reply by Brazil's coach Carlos Dunga while taking questions at a press briefing after the team's arrival in South Africa last week. He was being quizzed about whether his players would be allowed to indulge in carnal pleasures during the tournament. He ventured that he would leave it up to the players to decide. The Argentinians, on the other hand, have been advised by their team doctors they can also do "the beast with two backs" -- but only with regular partners or beasts, if you will, and this should preferably not be accompanied by other excesses, such as champagne and cigars. So let the games begin then! I can hear the imagined chorus from the countless women and reportedly 40 000 sex workers who are here for precisely that -- to entertain soccer players and the throngs of accompanying fans who are expected to flock into the country for the beautiful game. To lubricate this copulation, the South African government has announced that it will distribute one billion condoms during the tournament. A billion. That's nine zeros. Gosh. Are they really expecting that much fornication to be taking place in just one month? In disbelief at the Health Department's largesse, my colleague Jeremy Maggs and I decided to calculate how far these condoms would go and whether we really needed that many. So, with a billion free condoms doing the rounds, tourists are likely to have sex five times a day. That leaves little time for watching the football, doesn't it? After the Health Department announced the freebie, I posed this question to my Facebook friends: With so many condoms being made available, what exactly are people here to do? Watch the footie or play footsie footsie? Many took offence at the Health Department's gesture, saying that by making so many condoms available the government is creating the impression that South Africa is a permissive country, where sex tourism is promoted to the detriment of women and children. Others glibly retorted that one could watch only so much football. A match is just 90 minutes after all, so a "shag-a-thon", as one friend called it, would be the best form of recreation in the remaining 22 hours. I think it is very disingenuous of South Africans to be sanctimonious about the provision of condoms given our sky-high HIV infection rates. It is clear that people are having sex, lots of it, and lots of it is unprotected sex, with devastating consequences. Making the condoms available doesn't condone licentious behaviour but is a plea to South Africans and our visitors that, although whatever happens in their bedrooms is their business, protection is an absolute must. This is simply a tactic to safeguard the nation's sexual health. Furthermore, Aaron Motsoaledi, the health minister, who recently began a major drive to promote "the breast is best" policy among the moms of newborns, doesn't really want to be singing the same tune some nine months after the World Cup. As for the soccer players themselves, their wandering eyes and straying is legendary. Whether they are fastidious about using condoms, we don't know, but we need not look far for an example of promiscuity in the world of high-profile, super-achieving sports personalities. The May issue of Vanity Fair magazine has spoken to four of Tiger Woods's concubines who, without exception, all say that in his disturbing Lothario ways he never used a condom. This is a man with a wife, nogal. I think the health department is displaying foresight by trying to encourage good behaviour because, whatever Dunga might believe about people's appetite for sex, there will clearly be lots of it. So people should either zip it or wrap it. |

Eto'o probably does more humanitarian stuff than any other african player. even if he funded red cross single handedly, there will still be suffering in the world. it is is money and he has a right to do as he desires. he has a watch collection named after him (he does not own the company like someone mentioned earlier) and if he chooses to give out some to his mates,i see no big deal there. the cost of those watches is not up to what some EPL players lose in gambling in a week.go and see how much Matthew Etherington is owing in gambling debts and he does not earn half of what Eto'o earns. come to think of it, being an ambassador for the watch company, Eto'o might not even have paid street value for them. |
guys and gals, i did not watch, i will not watch it, i do not defend Scott neither will i attack him. but one thing has to be said, Nigerian sports journalists are the epitome of mediocrity. They have alwasy been, since the days of NTA monopoly with the likes of Ahmeed Adio and Tunji Oyebanji (those men were just career civil servants with no iota of knowledge in any sports) to these days where every street corner houses a radio or tv station.the mediocres have just multiplied and the bar has been lowered. all they do is speak with silly accents and murder names. they can't even visit popular sport sites online to plagarize the opinion of knowledgeable people. They are so lazy and looking for cheap appointments like media adviser and all sorts. |
the weakest group in my view. Italy should get through easily. the other three have an equal chance and whoever they meet in the 1/4 should be happy. |
My head says Mexico/Uruguay my heart says SA/Uruguay. |
dayokanu:to 1,2 and RSA well done for this thread. my thoughts are with these journalists.the trauma of being robbed at gun point is no child play. howevere, this can happen anywhere. a friend was robbed in essex recently. her flat was emptied while she was at work. several EPL players based in the city of liverpool have ben robbed in recent times and some were even held up at gun point while it happened. the fact can not be ignored that SA is a country riddled with violent crime but it is often exagerrated and there is more going on in the country than crime. Just a shame i will not be around for the world cup but i will storm the place soon after and i am sure of fun in large doses. Hala la Mzansi |
