Pigeon Caught Flying Drugs Into Prison

A pigeon smuggling cocaine and cannabis into a prison in Costa Rica has been caught by guards. The bird was seen landing in the central concourse of the medium security La Reforma jail, in San Rafael de Alajuela, where it was taken into custody. The drugs were contained in a small zipped up pouch strapped to the animals chest.The guards spotted the bird on Tuesday afternoon as it flew towards an open area of the medium security La Reforma prison. Prison director Paul Bertozzi said: ‘They observed the bulge on the animal so they captured it and confirmed that it carried a bag with zipper – and the drugs were inside… It seems the dove was trained for it.’The pigeon was examined by experts at the ZooAve Animal Rescue Centre who said the bag it was carrying caused some damage to its digestive system.A mugshot of the bird, caught by security officers and taken into custody, was released by Costa Rica’s Department of Justice and Peace as a warning to be vigilant for Narcopalomas.  Narcopalomas, loosely translated as ‘drugs doves’, have been used by prisoners and their accomplices in the past– similar birds have been caught in prisons in Colombia, Argentina and even Bosnia.Mr Bertozzi said the pigeon was “nothing new” and that drug traffickers were using “unimaginable ways to achieve their macabre atrocities”.

Nigeria’s wartime leader, Gen Yakubu Gowon, says “Nigeria is better off with Igbos.” He spoke while delivering an oration at the burial service for Chief (Mrs.) Chinyere Asika, wife of the former Sole Administrator of East Central State; just as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, described the deceased as a woman who exemplified the virtue of patience, charity and humility. She was a courageous woman, caring and humble.  I remember her efforts in “Otu Olu Obodo”- a public service initiative which she used as a tool of empowerment for her Igbo kinsmen and women.”Obiano told the children and the Asika family to imbibe the virtues of patience, charity and humility from Mrs  Asika, while urging the congregation and Ndi Anambra to remember “her good deeds and pray for the repose of her soul.”The service was attended by many prominent personalities including a former Minister of Defence, Gen T.Y. Danjuma, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

Politics Nigeria Decides: Buhari To Debate Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC will on Wednesday join other presidential candidates for a debate at the University of Abuja.

The Chairman, University of Abuja Presidential Debate Committee, Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, has promised that President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will grace the presidential debate being organised by the university tomorrow.

According to him, since none of the candidates had declined the invitations extended to them, it was assumed that they would be present at the event to showcase their manifestoes to the electorate.

He said the tomorrow’s presidential debate would present an opportunity for the candidates to educate Nigerians specifically on their parties’ manifestoes.

The Chairman of the debate committee who spoke in a radio programme monitored yesterday in Abuja, said different media houses wouldbe available to monitor the debate which he said would be two dimensional.

Abugu said the purpose of the debate was not to put any of the candidates on the hot seat or set an examination for any of them, adding, “We just want them to come and educate Nigerians and for voters to know their programmes so that they can make informed choice.”

Taraba APC Governorship Aspirant Defects to PDP

Yususfu Akirikwen, a governorship aspirant of All Progressive Congress, APC, in the party’s recent gubernatorial primary election has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Taraba State; VANGUARD reports.

Akirikwen defection was announced at a rally of the governorship candidate of PDP, Dickson Ishaku in Jalingo, Taraba State capital. He reportedly defected alongside 17,000 of his supporters.

Explaining the reason for his defection, he said, ''Four of us contested to be the flag bearer of the party in the state, one person out of us hijacked the whole process, we complain to the national secretariat of the party and nobody has ever call us''.
