16-year-old student arrested for ‘insulting’ the president


A 16-year-old high school student has been arrested in central Turkey for “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by accusing him and his ruling party of corruption, sparking angry criticism on Thursday from the opposition.

The boy, identified by his initials M.E.A., was believed to be a member of a leftist organisation, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

He delivered a speech on Wednesday in the central Anatolian city of Konya, a bastion of Erdogan’s Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), in memory of a young secular teacher killed by Islamists in 1930, according to the newspaper.

The boy, who was arrested by police at school, is now facing up to four years in prison if convicted on the charge.

It was the latest controversial arrest in Turkey in recent weeks. Recent police raids on media outlets affiliated with Erdogan’s top foe, the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, sparked an angry exchange with the European Union, which said the arrests undermined media freedom.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu supported the court’s decision on the juvenile’s arrest.

“Everyone must respect the office of president whoever he is,” Davutoglu said, quoted in Turkish media.

In his testimony to prosecutors, the boy denied links with any political party and said that the local governor’s office granted permission for the commemoration ceremony organised through social media.

“I’ve made the statement in question. I have no intent to insult,” he reportedly said.

The boy’s lawyer, Baris Ispir, submitted a petition to the court, together with around 100 colleagues who came from Istanbul in a show of support.

“Even if he is convicted, he is 16 years old which requires a one-third reduction in his penalty,” the lawyer said, according to the private Dogan news agency.

Riza Turmen, lawmaker of the secular opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), denounced the arrest as a violation of the UN charter on children’s rights.

“Regimes taking children out of classes by police force and putting them in jail are fascist regimes,” Turmen, a former judge at the European Court of Human Rights, wrote on Twitter.

“This goes against the UN charter on children’s rights.”

Turkey’s government faced an unprecedented wave of protests in 2013 against what was seen as authoritarian policies from Erdogan, who was then prime minister.

The AKP government was shaken by a vast corruption scandal last December that dragged down four ministers facing accusations of bribery and influence-peddling.

Erdogan, who was elected president in August, angrily accused his former ally-turned-foe Gulen of concocting the graft scandal.

Thirty people were arrested in raids earlier this month against those deemed to have links to Gulen.

Most have now been released but a court has remanded in custody on terrorism charges the head of the pro-Gulen Samanyolu TV and three former police chiefs. It also issued an arrest warrant for Gulen himself.

In power since 2003, Erdogan has brought relative stability to Turkey after years of rocky coalition governments and an economic meltdown in 2001.

But what critics describe as his increasingly authoritarian style and zero-tolerance of criticism have proved a major test for democracy in the country which has long sought to join the European Union.

We are comparing achievements bro, and I stated from the onset that we will compare all their achievements, sector by sector. I went ahead to state the sectors, but you screamed that "Economy no be only train o", hence my conclusion that you did not read through the post. The railway system is incomplete, but was started. Which one did Buhari start? Bring it, let us compare, else, package his achievements in other sectors of the economy and wait till we get there. Forget the blanket declarations on how Buhari revamped the economy. We need practical proofs and that is what we have started.

He said; "it is on record that the Alhaji Shehu Shagari's government started the Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mill and was almost completing it before Buhari led others to overthrow the government. The dream of Ajaokuta was killed by that military coup led by Buhari, and all efforts to revive it by the Jonathan-led government have been impeded by unresolved court actions.

"In Lagos State, the Alhaji Lateef Jakande's government had commenced the Metroline Transportation System, but what did the Buhari-led military government do? It truncated the project and went on to pay $78 million compensation to the contractor at the expense of Lagos tax payers.

"Before the 1983 military coup, the Jakande's Lagos State Government only needed the Federal Government to guarantee a N100 million loan and the Shagari-led government was ready to do it, but Buhari, in his shallow mindedness cancelled the laudable project and paid $78 million compensation to the contractor.

"If Jakande was going to give Lagosians Metro Line in 1983, and he (Jakande) could build Lagos State Secretariat; Alausa, build several low cost houses, constructed several roads, including the Lekki-Epe expresway, established Lagos State University, Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos State Television, built the permanent site of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, among several other landmark achievements, shouldn't we begin to ask ourselves what would have happened to Lagos State in terms of development if Jakande had ruled the State for eight years?

"Now we have a Dr Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government that has demonstrated strong commitment to the return of the country lost glories, these same elements, who put us where we are today are telling us that because President Jonathan is from a minority Ijaw tribe, he must not be allowed to have a second term that is allowed by the Constitution if he desires.

"I have looked at their arguments and I can say it pointedly that their main reason for opposing President Jonathan is not lack of developmental strides, but because a minority Ijaw man, from whose land the crude oil that sustains Nigeria as a nation comes from, does not have the rights to rule the country.

"For this selfish reason, Buhari is now comfortable in the company of someone like Baba Bisi Akande that he (Buhari) jailed in 1984 for corruption, and I ask; in the eyes of Buhari, is Baba Akande no longer corrupt?

"It has therefore become necessary for Nigerians to be mindful of these elements in the APC, bearing in mind that it was exactly 30 years ago that their northern leader, Buhari destroyed democratic governance in Nigeria and truncated the developments that were going on then. We must not allow them to draw us back now for their own selfish gains, and I am sure God won't let them.""
