doyin13: I would argue though there is contrary evidence from say Senegal where culturally they have been able to safeguard their heritage without the recourse to violence and an anachronistic religious mindset. Despite our culture kinda mixed with Islamic norms, yet we still have distinct cultural and traditional values that are entirely indigenous. Our Poetry exists in an oral tradition, as practiced by the praise singers and the oral historians, and also in the written tradition of the learned. Just like inn other west African countries, lutes & other music instruments, which include drums as well as string is an integral part of Hausa Music and something is purely native. doyin13: As a matter of fact this regression might be the reason why a tourist would rather head to the the other West African countries of similar ilk than they would the North. Tourist despite terrorist attack and kidnapping still flock the desert oasis and pyramids of Egypt as well as other Arab countries. Even without the so call violence and anachronistic religious mindset I can not see tourist on the streets of southern cities in Nigeria. The simple reasons why it is easy to sight a tourist in all Western African countries than in Nigeria is because of one problem. High Crime rate. A Whiteman in respective of his country or status is a must target once he is outside the confine and security of his hotel. On the other hand a tourist in other west African countries can be seen walking freeing in cities and villages. |

doyin13: But someone explain to me why Northern music is more akin to Ethiopia's than closer neighbours such as the Kora influenced Niger or Mali or Senegal There are two broad categories of Hausa music : rural folk music and urban court music both music to my own understanding both have no attachment with Ethiopia music. Ethiopia’s and Eritians are the closest cousins to the Arabs, their way of life is to some extend influence by Islamic way of life. By the same contrast Hausa use Islamic design in their architecture, pottery, cloth, leather, and weaving. Music is an integral part of Hausa life and can be classified in terms of function and audience: for royalty, for dancing pleasure, and for professional guilds is also influence by Islamic dogma. |

funloving: Mc Usman, where did you get these pictures ? Where you a Peace Keeper, Militant, Journalists, etc?
Just curious because these pictures are so real and taken at very close range. I mean, if these are your pictures then you must have been right at the front line but no harm came to you ?
War is Evil I am neither a peacekeeper, a militant or a journalist. I am with the UNHCR. And these pix you see are dammn real. Many I took them my self some I got them from colleagues. |

Politics › Re: North Has World's Highest Iliterate Children ( World Bank) by MCUsman(m): 10:56am On Oct 08, 2008 |
Tonim: I don't agree that the North has the highest illiterate children in the world. Are the children of Afghanistan and Burkina Faso more educated than the children of Northern Nigeria ? I don't think so.
May be among the highest in the world, but not the highest. Even at that It is still pathetic PapaBrowne: North Central is majorly Christian, with states like Plateau, Kwara, Nassarawa, etc, Hence doesn't so much of have an educational problem. The North Central is not Majority Christian, but has the highest number of Christains than other region in the North. Kobojunkie: The fact remains that as long as the north continues to suffer in this area and many, the longer the whole country continues in the same cycle. It is in the country's interest that the north is given adequate resources to ENSURE positive change in the area of education. When I mean resources, I am in no way limiting speaking simply of financial resources here. What do you expect when the top hierarchy of northern leaders continues to relegate education to the background? Unless the North tackles the education lag the region will still continue to remain in shadow of poverty. I hope see the day when Northern elites will emulate their southern counterpart in sponsoring poor students on scholarship as done by their counterparts in the south. |

After some years in the film industry she married a Kano business man based in London. After the marriage she moved to London with her husband were she stayed with him for about 3 years.
