Nairaland / General / Farewell Message To nairaland. by MCUsman(m): 6:05pm On Nov 26, 2008
Come 30th November, 2008 I will be leaving Liberia to confront yet another ongoing slaughter in the city of Goma eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo where more than 5 million have died in that conflict since 1996. The three years I spend in Monrovia working with UNHCR, and the moments I share with you nairalanders will surely remain memorable. I will be without internet connectively since my area of assignment will surely be on the field until such a time when things are back to normal then we can afford the luxury of sitting in the office.

My Farewell message to the following:-

DeepZone AKA PepERSprAY: There is a saying about keeping your enemies close. DPZ is a deadly strain of a perturbed woman devoid of emotional affiliation. She need a serious reality check.

Nigeria1//: we should derive pride and joy in identifying with our fatherland and not dividing it on flimsy statistic reason.

Jairzinho: I ve said this to you before “Truth is infinite. You can''''t dilute infinity”

Gamine: She seems genuine, but lost in another world after clapping her hands on the wrong side.

bawomolo : A positive thinker People like bawomolo are fast becoming rare breed in nairaland.

Nuzo : Another moronic scumbag who is living in an alternative universe, where the truth is irrelevant –NUZO GET BACK ON YOUR MEDS!!!

ikeyman00: Always Delusional and forgetful.

Marykelly: It's sad that people like marykelly will listen more to what a particular person has to say about a man, then what the man has to say himself. I could not really be more specific about what she has been blathering on about.

lucabrasi; Another positive thinker with good value judgment

KarmaMod: A half baked graduate form EKITI Developed a severe rivalry with her close prodigy DEEPZONE as to who is more of a slowpoke.

thetruth90. When Nigerians try to analyze local situations through western pop psychology, then we have a problem in our hands. When you claim 90% what you say is the truth where in fact 90% of your posts are stereotype with paranoid fantasies.

Politics / The Northern May Dominate The Nigerian Seafaring Industry. by MCUsman(m): 10:03am On Nov 24, 2008
The Guardian 24th Nov. 2008

INDIGENES of the northern states of Nigeria may dominate the Nigerian seafaring industry in the future as the their state governors have adopted the National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) being initiated by the Federal Government through its agency, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The programme is aimed at producing a new generation of seafarers to replace the present ones that are already ageing.

The governors at their recent meeting in Kaduna decided to send no fewer than 475 youths at 25 per state, to train as seafarers in the Federal Government's programme.

Under the programme, the federal and state governments will co-sponsor the youths' training as seafarers on 60-40 per cent basis overseas. They are, to thereafter, be employed as seafarers in the nation's maritime sector.

The northern state governors took the decision after the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Shamsudeen Ade Dosunmu briefed them on the possibilities of the job placement for their youths in the maritime sector after the training.

Dosunmu confirmed in Ibadan few days ago that the governors of the northern states had already bought into the Federal Government programme aimed at providing jobs for the youths, adding that they had all adopted the training programme for their youths.

"I was invited by the northern governors to make a presentation to them on this programme during their forum which took place in Kaduna. At the end of my presentation, the governors passed a resolution to support and adopt the seafarers development programme for their various states," he said.

Besides the northern governors, some governors in the southern Nigeria have indicated their interest in the youth employment programme.

Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala said in Ibadan few days ago that 85 per cent of employment opportunities in the Nigerian maritime sector had been taken over by foreigners. While indicating the states' willingness to partner with NIMASA to ensure the success of the youths employment programme, he expressed optimism that it had the potential of employing Nigerians to reverse the present employment trend in the nation's maritime industry.

Former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Chief Adebayo Sarumi who also spoke in Ibadan recently during the campaign/workshop on seafarers development programme, commended the Federal Government's initiative.

He advised the youths to embrace the rewarding career at sea which according to him was central to the growth of the Nigerian economy.

"I must commend the NIMASA management for taking this initiative. It is actually long over due as foreigners now dominate the Nigerian waters. This programme has the potential of totally transforming the face of seafaring in Nigeria," Sarumi said.

Delivering a keynote address at the Ibadan campaign venue, Dosunmu said that the on-going sensitisation exercise was aimed at creating genuine national awareness on the potentials of the Nigerian maritime sector, besides creating equal opportunities for all Nigerians.

The search for the youths to enlist as seafarers in Nigeria had been carried out in Enugu, Kaduna, Minna, Port Harcourt and Bauchi where the Federal Government through the National Orientation Agency took a centre stage to enlighten Nigerians on the need to take over the nation's maritime industry from foreigners through intensive training for the youths

At Minna, Governor Babangida Muazu, who is the current chairman of northern governors forum, said that if a seafarer could earn as much as $15,000 per month, it would be necessary to avail the youths in the North the opportunity to be gainfully employed, adding that unemployment among the youths was already a source of concern to the northern governors.

"We are doing everything possible to fight poverty, yet many people are not aware of job opportunities in the maritime sector. If we have paid for the youths to go to school we must find them a job. Niger State will soon be one of the top three economies in Nigeria. There are lots of job opportunities and this is just one of them. At the end of this campaign, NIMASA will ask for nomination of 25 youths from Niger State to be trained in foreign countries as seafarer. If NIMASA is paying 60 per cent the cost of the training, we will pay 40 per cent. As the chairman of northern governors' forum, I will invite the director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for an address on this matter."

Babangida who has sound maritime background as he was once the director of Maritime Services and Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport lamented that even when many ships had been operating within the country's vast coastline, none of them had Nigerian crew members.

He said that seafaring career in Nigeria, which was dominated by foreigners, was one area where the youths could be legitimately be employed if they were well trained.

'There are so many ships that have been coming into Nigeria, yet none is crewed by Nigerians. Let us not continue to believe that we must steal to become rich. This is a legitimate way to make money and we will encourage people to participate. Let us sensitise the people that there are jobs there for them to participate. We will invite the NIMASA director-general to address the northern governors for them to put this project in their agenda.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), which also joined the campaign aimed at galvanising the interest of the Nigerian youth in seafaring career, said that the maritime placement programme of NIMASA was crucial to the effective implementation of the nation's coastal and Inland Shipping Act (Cabotage). It would also stop the abuse of waiver to operate foreign vessels, which favoured foreigners over Nigerians.

The Agency Director General, Alhaji Idi Mohammed Faruk told the youth at Enugu then that over 120,000 jobs are available for grab by Nigerians in the maritime industry, which according too him, was capable of generating additional 16,000 jobs in the near future.

"The National Orientation Agency is pleased with the invitation to be part of the workshop and to facilitate the mobilisation of participation to ensure success. This initiative by NIMASA is no doubt timely and highly commendable."

Sunday tribune.
By Our Reporter - 16.11.2008

IN a manner which is fast becoming the second nature of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, hell nearly broke loose at the wedding of the Oyo State governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala’s daughter in Ogbomoso, on Saturday when Iyabo, who arrived the cerremony when the church service was midway and conspicuosly refused to greet the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and his wife, went passed them after kneeling down to others.

She was said to have secured a seat behind the governor and at a stage started dancing behind the governor provocatively, while the seams of her dress was said to have touched the governor’s head in the process. One of the security aides of the governor, who attempted to stop her, was physcially assautlted by the Senator in the church, in the presence of other governors and traditional rulers.

The Senate leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, who was said to have witnessed the show of shame, was said to have pleadedwith the governor and the security operatives to overlook Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s disgraceful behaviour.

Personalities who were said to have also witnessed the show of shame included, General Adeyinka rtd, other South West Governors, Chief Bode George, Oba Ogunleye of Akinale, Oyo Deputy Governor, Alhaji Taofik Arapaja and Chief Abiola Ogundokun.

Governor Daniel was said to have remained calm. Senator Obasanjo has been having a running battle with the Ogun State governor in recent times.

The face-off between the duo peaked when the plan by the Alake of Egbaland to have the daughter of the former president confered with the Iyaniwura chieftaincy title wasallegedly stalled by the governor.

Apart from that, the ordeals of the senator in the hands of the EFCC operatives and the media attacks that trailed her alleged involvement in the N10 million ministry of health scam, was view from the Obasanjo camp as that sponsored by the governor.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that Senator Obasanjo had in the past demonstrated such unruly behaviour during the wedding ceremonies of Major Obasanjo in Abeokuta, at the Hiltop residence of her father, when she walked out the ADC and CSO of Governor Daniel from the venue of the ceremony.

She was also said to have exhibited the same level of indiscipline when she publicly snubbed the then first lady late Stella Obasanjo who was a special guest of honour at the annual award ceremonies.

Senator Obasanjo was the commissioner for health during the first term tenure of Governor Daniel and he was said to have been instrumental to her emergence as a senator.

Senator Obasanjo, according to an eye witness account would have caused more havoc despite the intervention of the senate leader, for the fact that governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State had to call her to sit directly behind him.

Not yet satisfied with the ugly scene she had created, she was said to have stormed out of the church service immediately the convoy of his former boss departed Ogbomosho.

Commenting on the development, Special Adviser to the Oyo State governor on Public Communication, Prince Dotun Oyelade said, “the little skirmish during the wedding was an importation of a local politics that does not distract us from the sublime and profound joy tht brought us all together at this blessed occasion.”

Jokes Etc / 20 Lashes To A Ibo, Hausa & Yoruba Man by MCUsman(m): 12:23pm On Nov 16, 2008
A Yoruba Man was sitting with an Ibo man and a Hausa man in Saudi Arabia, sharing a smuggled barrel of beer, when all of a sudden the police entered and arrested them. They

were initially given a death sentence but, as it was a national holiday, the sheikh decided they should be released after each receiving 20

lashes of the whip. As they were

preparing for their punishment, the sheikh said, "It's my first wife's birthday today and she asked me to allow each of you one wish

before your whipping, but you cannot wish not to be whipped!"

The Hausa man thought for a second then said: "Please tie a pillow to my back before whipping." This was done but the pillow

lasted 10 lashes.

The Ibo man saw this and said: "Please tie two pillows to my back before whipping." This was done and lasted for the whole 20 lashes.

The Yoruba Man saw this, but before he could make his wish, the sheikh said: "As you share the same ethnicity with the president of your country, you are permitted to have two wishes!"

The Yoruba Man thought for a second, then said: "Thank you, most royal and merciful highness. My first wish is to receive 100 lashes

with the strongest, toughest whip available." "If you so desire," the sheikh replied with a questioning look on his face, "and your second

wish?" "Tie the Ibo man to my back."
