I watched The Suicide Squad yesterday, and unfortunately I was eating beans and yam at the same time. Last last I didn't finish the beans because the gory content looked like the beans I was eating.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) started its weekly activities by throwing more light on the controversial areas of its 2020 audited financial report that placed the corporation on a profit lane.

It will be recalled that on Aug. 26, President Muhammadu Buhari announced a profit after tax of N287billion by the corporation in 2020, the first of its kind in the oil giant’s 44-year history.

This feat which was commended by President Buhari had also won the Group Managing Director of the corporation Malam Mele Kyari-led management accolades from stakeholders and Nigerians from all walks of life.

Kyari however, explains how the corporation’s performance turn out positive at a time the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic affected businesses worldwide?

Also. the Group Executive Director, Finance & Accounts, Mr Umar Ajiya, also shed more light on the development and equally addressed some of the issues raised by those who doubt the veracity of the profit declared by the Corporation.

He said the trend of real openness has begun not only in the NNPC but also in the Nigerian petroleum industry, especially with the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

He said that during the period under review, the NNPC took some unprecedented steps among which was cost optimisation aimed at refocusing its businesses.

Also, in the week, the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company Limited (NGMC), a subsidiary of NNPC, restated its commitment to the development of its host communities.

Managing Director of the Company, Mr Justin Ezeala, made the commitment at the opening ceremony of the Women Skills Acquisition Program for its host communities in its Northern operations

He said NGMC was committed to developing a robust sustainable relationship with all its host communities and disclosed that the beneficiaries were carefully nominated by executives of their respective communities and would undergo intensive three-week training in catering, tailoring/fashion design, hairdressing and make-up (including pedicure, manicure andgele tying).

He tasked the host communities on the sustenance of the existing peaceful relationship while assuring them of the company’s continued support.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Lead Consultant, Bernard Emekpe, said the program was a testament to NNPC’s vision of engaging the communities in which it operates.

He advised the beneficiaries to see this as a lifetime opportunity and take control of their destiny.

A representative of the host communities, Otokina Goodluck, and some of the beneficiaries said the program was a life-changing opportunity and promised to make judicious use of it.

The beneficiaries were drawn from Ajaokuta, Geregu, and Aku communities in Kogi State.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Norway has commended the federal government on the successful signing of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Knut Eiliv Lein gave the commendation during a business visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Chief Timipre Sylva in Abuja.

He said they were delighted at the signing of the bill which he said would accelerate development and strengthen the oil and gas industry.

On his part, Chief Sylva said the difference between past efforts and the eventual PIB that was passed by the National Assembly was that all industry stakeholders, including government agencies were carried along.

Still, on the week under review, the GMD was conferred the BusinessDay Energy Executive of the Year Award by Businessday Newspaper Management in recognition of his giant strides in repositioning the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

Receiving the award in Abuja, Kyari said the trust by President Buhari was the propelling force behind the many achievements recorded in the nation’s oil and gas sector within the last two years.

He described his position and the confidence that he enjoys from the President as a privilege, stressing that he and members of his management team were working hard to justify the trust in the interest of the nation and to the benefit of Nigerians.

He attributed the transformation and recent profit by the Corporation to quality leadership and prudent management of resources, noting that it was part of his efforts towards keeping the trust.

The GMD stated that the Corporation’s courage to publish its 2018 Audited Financial Statement with a huge loss was in line with his management resolve to be transparent and accountable to the public, emphasizing that the success story of ₦287bn profit in the 2020 financials was a result of the determination to do things differently.

The NNPC helmsman, while appreciating the management of BusinessDay Media Limited for the award, declared: “As the biggest company with the largest assets in Africa, NNPC has no reason not to make a profit.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Managing Director of BusinessDay Media Limited, Dr Ogho Okiti, said globally acceptable parameters were adopted in selecting the awardees.

“In addition, our Business Research and Intelligence Unit (BRIU) in conjunction with our Oil and Gas Editorial Team have carefully analysed the data available on each company as well as their work programme recorded with the DPR for the period between 2019 and 2020 to arrive the selection”, he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Father of the Day, HRM King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, acknowledged the contributions of the oil and gas industry to national development and called for diversification of the economy.

For piloting the Corporation into the post-Petroleum Industry Act era, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has pledged its unalloyed support for the Management of the NNPC.

The Group Chairman, PENGASSAN, Comrade Victor Odor, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division (GPAD), Garba Deen Muhammad, in his office in Abuja.

Comrade Odor, who said the visit was to felicitate with the Corporation’s spokesman on his appointment, declared that the union would stop at nothing to defend the Corporation’s current position as a profit-making company against those who believe that NNPC could never do well, adding that the NNPC GMD and his management team have done well in repositioning the Corporation and deserved support.

He said the union would focus more on functional conflict management than disruptive conflict management in its constructive engagement with the Management to ensure sustainable growth and profitability for the Corporation.

Responding, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Garba Deen Muhammad, who appreciated the union leaders for the kind gesture, said the GMD was very passionate about repositioning the Corporation and the entire oil and gas industry.

He assured the union leaders that Management was appreciative of their support and was always ready to work with them to take the Corporation to greater heights.

The Group Chairman of PENGASSAN was accompanied on the visit by the Group Vice Chairman, Comrade Eghosa Aghimien, and Group Secretary of PENGASSAN, Comrade Olugbenga Shokunbi.

Governor Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said the apex bank has discovered that a significant portion of the dollars bought by the BDCs went into illegal arms deals.

He said this, on Friday, while briefing journalists at the end of the September Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the bank.

The MPC retained all key rates, citing economic recovery as an incentive.

Emefiele vowed that the bank will go after those who are accessing dollars illegally.

“Whether it’s Boko Haram, kidnapping and all sorts of nefarious activities, BDCs take our country’s dollar and sell to people to go and buy arms and ammunition to come and hurt us.”

“That’s what people want us to continue to do. We cannot do that any longer. We can’t. If you have any legal, legitimate business you want to conduct, please take your business to a bank, they will sell you forex.

“If the amount you want is even above the limit that is recognised and we find that the reasons you are making this demand is legitimate, your bank will speak to us and we will give you more than what is the limit,” he said.

He told individuals and businesses to always approach the banks for legitimate forex needs.

He also said the CBN will continue the crackdown on those who obtain forex for fraudulent means.

“We go after people who use fake visa and other travel documents to fraudulently procure forex from the commercial banks through EFCC and other anti-graft agencies.”

“The only exchange rate that I recognize today in the Nigerian foreign exchange market which is the dominant market remains the Investors & Exporters window, which is the market that we expect everybody that wishes to procure foreign exchange or somebody who wants to sell foreign exchange, go to your bank, the Investors & Exporters window will attend to you. I’m sorry to say that I do not, and I do not intend to recognise there are any other rates in the market” he said.

National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA) on Thursday began distributing farm inputs to 32,557 farmers affected by the 2020 flood disaster in Niger.

NEMA’s Director-General, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, who launched the distribution of the inputs to the beneficiaries in Minna , stated that the agency decided to launch the distribution in Niger state because it was among the worst hit by the 2020 flood disaster.

“You will recall that during the 2020 flood disaster , NEMA staff were deployed to the field, including communities affected by flood and other secondary hazards in Niger, to undertake a damage and loss assessment.”

Ahmed said that 32,557 farmers were verified and were slated to benefit from the Federal Government’s Agricultural Inputs Intervention for the state.

He listed the items to be distributed to include: Herbicides (81,390 litres ), pesticides (48,834 litres), Growth Enhancer (68, 944 litres), rice 12.5 kg (16 ,278 bags), maize 10kg (16, 278 bags).

Others were water pump-2, 252 units, Sprayers – 8 , 139 units , NPK fertiliser – 50 kg, 22,450 bags and Cowpea-10 kg, 16,278 bags.

He stated that in addition to the enumerated inputs, six trucks conveying 5,007 bags of 50 kg NPK 20-10-10 fertiliser would be added as the balance earmarked for the state.

The NEMA chief executive lauded the doggedness and unflinching commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari, for prioritising support to small scale farmers.

Ahmed said the unprecedented Green Revolution by the Buhari-led administration had spread to all nooks and crannies of the country, such that Nigerians had reduced their consumption of imported foods.

In his remarks, Gov. Abubakar Sani-Bello commended the president’ s gesture to the state’s farmers.

Bello, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, said the state government would set up a committee to monitor the beneficiaries, to ensure judicious utilisation of the inputs.

Earlier , the Director-General, State Emergency Management Agency ( NSEMA), Alhaji Ahmed Inga, commended the Federal Government’s intervention to address food security and complement the state government’s efforts.

The Federal Executive Council presided over by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has approved ₦38.4 billion for the completion of road projects in five states.

The road projects which were inherited from past administrations are located in Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Imo, and Nasarawa.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of Wednesday’s Council meeting.

According to Fashola, “They are not new projects, they are projects that we inherited and we are trying to complete. So essentially, they relate to cost revision because of the ages of the contracts and the prices of goods that have changed.

“So, the first one was the contract for a 13.5-kilometre spur of the road from Onitsha-Owerri Road through Okija-Ihembosi-For Ugbor to Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Thatcontract was awarded in 2011 b ut wasn’t funded until this administration came in so the contractor is asking us to revise the contract by a review of ₦488,980,891 and an additional completion period of six months and the council approved that review of price and the extended completion period.”

The Minister said Council also approved a contract for the completion of a 20-kilometre road in Bayelsa State.

He said, “The Second one is the 20-kilometre dualisation of Yenagoa road junction to Kolo and Otuoke and Bayelsa Palm in Bayelsa State. That contract was awarded in December 2014 on the eve of the tenure of the last administration and it couldn’t even take off because of militancy issues at the time and also very limited budget provisions.

“It is one of the contracts that we have since activated with the Sukuk Bond. So, the dualization is progressing but there is some additional work that needs to be done. There are also results of further investigations that support a revision of the contract by ₦7.947 billion and this was approved by the council.”

Fashola said the third contract was for the completion of a road linking Nasarawa and Benue States, Central Nigeria.

“The third one is the 74-kilometre Nasarawa to Loko Road. That is the road that was awarded, I believe, in 2006, so it’s 15 years today, 74 kilometres and it has not been completed. This road links the Loko-Oweto Bridge, which we inherited and which we have completed and that Loko-Oweto Bridge links Nasarawa
to Benue, across the River Benue and also connects to the Oweto to Oshogbedo Road, which we also inherited, which we have completed.

“The complete lane from Otukpo to Nasarawa ought to be facilitated by this 74-kilometre road.

The contractor has struggled with just about five kilometres of it since 2006, and a small bridge.

“So, what we’ve proposed was that instead of going through the long process of termination and all of that, we proposed and Council agreed that the contractor who finished the bridge and the contractor who finished the road, because they were all awarded to different contractors before we came, should join this contractor and take up the remainder.

“So, we’ve limited the contractor who was originally awarded this road to just 10.8 kilometres, that’s all he will do. So, we’ve awarded 42 kilometres to the contractor who did the Oshogbedo-Oweto Road and we’ve then awarded 21 kilometres, which is the part joining the bridge directly, to the contractor who completed the bridge. So, all of these totalling a revised project sum of about ₦30 billion, shared amongst the three contractors,” he explained.

Fashola said the completion of the road will slash travel time for commuters, especially those travelling from Otukpo in Benue state to the FCT.

“What is instructive is that once we finish this last part of the road, although it is being used now, but is not tarred, commuters are using it because it cuts off three hours from the journey from Otukpo to Abuja.

“Motorists don’t have to go through Lafia, if you climb the Oweto Bridge across the River Benue, land in Nassarawa, you’ll be landing around Keffi. So, it’s cutting off 103 kilometres from that journey from Otukpo to Abuja, which is about three hours. It used to be six hours plus.

“This is strategic also for providing prosperity, lifting people out of poverty because if the saying that time is money is true, everybody who saves three hours has three hours’ extra productivity and also consumes three hours less fuel and travel time and so on.

“So, Council approved this memo and we hope that sometime next year we can complete that linkage, but as you know, those of you who went with me, commuters are already using the road despite that path not being complete,” he said.

Following agitation for the zoning of presidency to the South-East, some young Igbo entrepreneurs yesterday shortlisted potential candidates of Igbo extraction.

The group, under the aegis of Umunna Lekki Association, comprises young Igbo entrepreneurs residing in the Lekki, Ikoyi, Banana Island, Victoria Garden City (VGC) and Victoria Island axis of Lagos State, saying it was ready to support the emergence of an Igbo President in 2023.

The candidates were shortlisted from five states of the South East geopolitical zone. From Abia State, they listed Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Prof. Ngozi Okonji Iweala, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and former Abia State governor, Orji Uzoh Kalu.

From Anambra State, they listed former governor of the state, Peter Obi, Charles Udeogaranya, Ben Obi and Henry Okolie-Aboh. The candidates listed from Ebonyi State included the state governor Dave Umahi, Ogbonnaya Onuh and Anyim Pius Anyim. In Enugu, they picked Geoffrey Onyema, Prof. Barth Nnaji, Nnia John Nwodo Jnr and Ike Ekweremadu. For Imo State, they listed Emeka Ihedioha,
Rochas Okorocha, Kema Chikwe and Humphrey Anumudu.

President of the group, Ikem Umeh-Ezeoke, in a statement yesterday released the list of eminent Igbo sons and daughters of Igboland. They said each of them has the capacity to take the country to greater height.

The group said it was ready to donate billions of Naira to the two main national political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if they nominate Nigerians of Igbo extraction to fly their flags in the 2023 presidential election.

Chairman, House Committee on Narcotic Drugs and sponsor of the proposed bill, Francis Ottah Agbo, said he will sponsor a bill to empower the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to carry out compulsory and routine drug tests on those seeking election into public offices.

The bill, he said, also seeks to subject all serving and intending security personnel as well as candidates seeking admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria to mandatory checks on drugs.

The lawmaker, in a statement Monday by his media aide, Andrew Agbese, said the menace of drug addiction has pervaded all segments of the society and only drug integrity tests on people in critical service sectors can sanitise the system.

He noted that the misbehaviour of some political office holders as well as most of the crimes committed in the society is drug-induced.

He stressed that this would have been avoided if those involved had been ascertained free from illicit drugs.

“I’m proposing a bill to empower the NDLEA to carry out a mandatory and routine drug test on politicians seeking
public offices, top public servants, military and paramilitary officers and men, and for youths seeking admission into higher institutions. This will check excesses, madness in the country and sanitise the system.

“Narcotic drug addiction is common among our people across the board; from secondary schools to the universities; from North to South; from politicians to the civil servants etc. Indeed, Nigeria is the highest abuser of illicit drugs and cannabis is the most abused drug in our country,” he said.

The Lagos State Government has trained and presented necessary work tools, including Personal Protective Clothing, to 100 newly employed officers of the Fire Service for effective discharge of their duties.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Adeseye Margaret, speaking at the passing out parade of the new Firefighters after six months of intensive training, charged the officers to boost the effectiveness of the Agency in Fire Safety, Rescue and Firefighting Operations.

She reminded the officers that the Personal Protective Clothing, which is essential for their maximum protection,
was provided by the State Government to combat infernos while keeping the Firefighters safe and secure as they
perform their statutory duties.

Admonishing the newly inducted officers, Mrs. Adeseye stressed that their focus should be on the prevention of fire outbreaks as well as ensuring the safety of lives and property, saying “Rescuing and protecting the citizens’ lives and property from the destructive consequences of fire and related emergencies should be your priority, as the best fire fought is the one prevented.

The Fire Boss clarified that the Officers, who would later be deployed across the State, will undergo operational attachment under the tutelage of experienced Firemen in order to acquire vital skills and experience required for successful firefighting operations.

Commending the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for providing all necessary support to the Agency, the Director implored the officers to contribute their quota to ensuring efficient and effective service delivery to the inhabitants of Lagos.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized a truckload of unregistered milk suspected to be counterfeit in Sokoto.

This was disclosed by NAFDAC Coordinator in Sokoto State, Malam Garba Adamu, in an interview with Newsmen on Wednesday.

Adamu said that the consignment of 300 cartons of 35g creamer sachet was seized on Sept. 6 at the popular Kantin Daji market while the vehicle was on transit to Kano.

He said that the items were confiscated and the persons involved fined, to serve as a deterrent to others.

The coordinator explained that the agency’s headquarters had, in July, alerted state offices of circulation of unregistered milk and other products in the country.

He enjoined members of the public to be wary of their consumables and monitor any unregistered item so as to support NAFDAC in safeguarding their health.

According to him, the agency’s officials intensified surveillance and inspection exercise in Sokoto and Kebbi states to ensure quality of products and services.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday played host to the Saudi Arabian minister of Foreign Affairs at State House, Abuja, declaring that the oil rich kingdom had been quite kind to Nigeria.

Receiving HRH Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Al-Saud, the President in a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said with Nigeria’s large population and
infrastructural deficit, the country needed all the revenue she could get from oil, a mainstay of the economy, “and Saudi Arabia has been very kind to us, making sacrifice by reducing production to accommodate us a number of times.”

President Buhari noted that the relationship between the two countries is very strong, “and dates back in time, both at the personal and national levels.”

“It is long and steadfast,” the President added. Prince Al-Saud brought greetings from King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, saying the kingdom appreciates the relationship with Nigeria, “which dates back 61 years, and we want to strengthen it even further.”

The two countries, he said, have good prospects both economically and politically, not just among the leaders, but also the people.

“There’s still a lot we can do together,” the Prince submitted.
