Residents of at least seven communities in Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State have been counting their losses since floods on Sunday devastated their communities.

Some of the worst hit areas are Mayo Gwoi, Abuja Phase 2, Nukkai, Barade and part of Abuja Phase 1.

Apart from washing away many homes and rendering many homeless, the floods also washed away farm crops and livestock.

Residents who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES blamed the disaster on a poor drainage system in many parts of the state capital, caused by uncontrolled physical development.

Many of the victims who are yet to relocate despite signs of more rains said they need government support to get new homes.

Though no life was lost in the disaster, Dauda Sani, a community leader in Abuja Phase 2, said the flood destroyed many houses in his area.

Another victim who gave her name as Aunty Tobi said she lost valuables such as books, personal documents, animals and foodstuff.

A widow and mother of five who gave her name as Sarah said she sent her children to relatives and friends in different places after her house was submerged on Sunday.

“I need to relocate from this area too but I have no money to do so,” she told Premium Times on Tuesday
Bala Sani of Barade community said he could not remove anything from his house after the flood struck .

“When we saw the rising water coming like a strong wave, we all ran away leaving our property. I thank God that I did not lose any of my family members.”

‘We lost many things’
Philip Garba, who spoke on behalf of the head of Abuja Phase 2, Thomas Umar, said over 100 houses were destroyed in the community.

“We lost so many things. We need help and assistance from government and good Samaritans for us to be able to return to normal life.”

He said people living in homes close to the river banks in the community were willing to relocate but need assistance to do so.

Government intervenes but…
Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku was in Abuja on Sunday when the disaster occurred.

He flew into the state later the same evening and visited some of the flood-ravaged areas to assess the
damages and sympathise with residents.

Mr Ishaku said the state government would immediately provide food and other relief materials.

The governor accused the federal government of abandoning the state to its fate in and failing to assist with relief materials for the flood victims.

He said the state government would provide relief materials to the affected areas to help cushion their pains.

Mr Ishaku said though he learnt that officials of the federal Ministry of Humanitarian Services and Disaster Management “claimed to be in the state the previous week”, he was yet to ascertain the claim.

“This assistance from the federal government does not get to us. We get assistance from certain proxies but not from the government,” he said but provided no details.

The governor also urged those residing in riverine areas to vacate the areas.

Mr Ishaku said the state government would send engineers to assess the damage caused to roads and bridges in the areas with a view to carrying out
urgent repairs.

Premium Times contacted the humanitarian services ministry and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the governor’s claim but got no response.

A special assistant to the minister, Halima Oyelade, when reached by the reporter on the telephone promised to get back after getting details from the department concerned but refused to pick several
calls afterwards.

But the permanent secretary of the state ministry of special duties and humanitarian services, Usman Madu, said “NEMA had reached out to the ministry”
and promised to deliver relief materials.

Mr Madu disclosed this on Tuesday while presenting the “first batch” of relief intervention to the victims of the disaster at the Jalingo local government secretariat.

He said the food items which include rice, garri, semovita and assorted seasoning were from the state government.

He said NEMA had promised to intervene through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) but he could not comment on the matter until the items are received.

“I cannot comment on what we are yet to receive but we were informed that NEMA is bringing some relief materials to the state, which we are waiting to receive.

“The details of the affected persons have been taken for necessary action. Those who own houses and other properties, we will see how we can give them succour.

Cooperate with government officials on
ground to carry out the task,” he said.

While commending Governor Darius for the prompt response to the situation, the chairman of Jalingo LGA, Nasiru Boboji, said the council would work with the leaders of the affected communities to
ensure that all victims benefited from the relief items.

He said he had earlier visited the affected areas with the member representing Jalingo 1 constituency in the state House of Assembly, Yahuza Abubakar, who was also at the distribution venue.

Speaking during the distribution, Mr Abubakar said, “the governor has promised to assist you more after this immediate intervention. We are providing food items to enable you eat before we get other forms of assistance”.

The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum yesterday said that the alleged appointment of a governor over some territories in Borno state by Boko
Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), was not authenticated.

Governor Zulum also declared that he was fully in charge of the state and that there was nothing contrary to show the emergence of any parallel government in the state.

The governor, who stated this while speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja,
said his administration was not investigating the issue.

It will be recalled that a report had recently emerged, which claimed that the insurgents had appointed one Abba Kaka as the governor under a new leadership
restructuring by an interim council.

Professor Zulum, who dismissed the veracity of the report, said: “We are yet to validate the authenticity of this report that ISWAP appointed governor in Borno
state. So, as the governor of the state, I think it’s not right for me to speak on something that I don’t have full knowledge of.”

Asked whether he would investigate the report, he said there was no such plan, even as he blamed the report on the social media.

He said, “(I am) not investigating. This report is not authenticated. You have just seen somebody written something in one of the…I think it’s on Facebook or something like that. You’re a journalist and I think we have to prove reports beyond reasonable doubts, before commenting on such reports.

“As far as I’m concerned. I’m the governor of Borno State and I don’t have any information that we have another government Nigerian state. Yes. And I’m very much in charge.”

On his mission to nation’s seat of power, he said that he was at the presidential villa to seek the president’s assistance to repatriate the over 200,000 Borno indigenes who fled insurgency to Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic.

He stressed the need to bring them back as according to him, the security situation in the state has improved.

He said: “Now that we have started witnessing gradual return of peace to Borno State,these people that are taking refuge in our neighbouring countries
are willing to return home.

“Therefore, Borno State government picked a date of 27th of November 2021 for the commencement of the repatriation process, especially to local government
areas of Abadam and Guzamala.

“So, I came to brief Mr. President, to solicit his support, with the view to ensuring hitch-free repatriation exercise.”

The governor, however, declined to place a figure on what it might take to implement the repatriation, saying: “I can’t quantify, but I think the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs with its agencies; NEMA, the
Refugee Commission and indeed the Northeast Development Commission, lastly the Borno State government, have the capacity to shoulder the responsibility of the repatriation exercise.”

On the fate of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) still in camps in the state, Governor Zulum said government was working on returning them to their
communities.

He said, “On the issue of internally displaced persons, yes the IDP camps are not palatable, that is why the government of Borno state and indeed the federal
government, are exploiting the potentials of resettling them back to their own communities or relocating them to areas that are safe.”

Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, Monday, declared that he had gotten the approval of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to run for president in the 2023 election.

The governor made the declaration when a coalition of groups including the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), Bauchi State Traders and Artisans Association and Association of Achaba and Keke NAPEPS visited him at Bauchi Government House to present their letter of endorsement to him.

He said since his first endorsement few weeks ago by Northern Youth Leaders Forum, consultations with Stakeholders have been ongoing.

He further stated that the State Working Committee ofhis Party has given him ‘a nod of approval’.

He however said that he is contented with his present position as a governor but is ready to serve the country in any capacity.

“Some of you saw me last week, going round to meet former ministers, senators and other leaders to discuss it (political ambition) .But I have to consult traditional rulers and ulamas too because I need their support,” the governor said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of his administration to continue to prioritise the implementation of policies and programmes that would help to tackle problems affecting Niger Deltans and make life more meaningful to them.

President Buhari gave the assurance weekend while commissioning and handing over of the Erosion control and road improvement works to Ondo State Government, at the project site in Owo LGA of Ondo State.

Buhari, who was represented by the Hon. Minister of State, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Omotayo Alasoadura, noted that the Erosion Control of Flooded Area/Road project was one of the Ecological Intervention Projects approved and executed by the Federal Government through the Ecological Fund Office, in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), for the good people of Owo and its environs.

According to him, “The implementation of the project underscores my Administration’s efforts to continue carrying out genuine government policies and as a testimony to ensure that no part of the country would be neglected owing to its geographical location or political consideration”.

“The completion of this project shows my determination and sincerity of purpose in tackling problems affecting its citizens and making life more meaningful to the people,” he added.

Speaking further, President Buhari commended the efforts and all those that have been involved in the process, noting that the completion of the project would bring huge relief to the community which for a very long time has been affected by ecological challenges.

While urging the people to take advantage of the usefulness of the project, Mr President admonished the people of the area to cherish the laudable project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.

In his remarks, the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, highlighted the devastating effects of erosion and flooding on the people. He said flooding in the area had caused Pollution, the decline in agricultural output and untimely death of many children in the past, but the timely intervention and completion of the erosion and road work by the Federal Government has changed the situation.

Akeredolu who commended the efforts of the Federal Government and all stakeholders said the state government is equipping the State Ministry of the Environment with the necessary tools to do the needful in this regard.

He said three thousand kilometres (3000km) of flood-prone areas have been channelized and concrete standardization of major towns roads have been completed to correct the situation in other areas of the state.

The Governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu.

Earlier in his welcome address the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Abuja, Dr Habiba Lawal, who was represented at the occasion noted that the Erosion control work was initiated by the late, Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) David Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi III (CFR) in order to arrest the continuous erosion, flooding and other ecological challenges in Owo town and its environs to avoid further environmental degradation, loss of lives and properties.

The commissioning and handing over of the project to the community is to enable the host community to take over and exercise ownership, to ensure its maintenance and sustainability so that resources committed by the government would not be a waste.

In his remarks, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye lll, the Olowo of Owo Kingdom said they are happy to have witnessed the beginning and completion of the project and conveyed the appreciation of the people of Owo to the Federal government.

He urged the government to see the project as a work in progress and appealed that, action be taken to ensure the commencement of the second phase of the project which should not be delayed because it is only when this is done that the benefit of the work can fully be realized.

Ndume, has donated N40 million in support of
empowering thousands of traders, farmers and
students.

“The empowerment programmes, which is in six

He said, “Today’s ceremony is the empowerment of
1,000 farmers with five trucks of fertilizers and two
trucks of maize seeds improved varieties, while
another group of young farmers would be presented
and empowered with 3 trucks of fertilizers and one
truck of maize seeds.

“1,000 traders are to be presented with N10 million
cheque. Likewise, 1,000 students are to receive
N10million cheque to support them in their
educational pursuit, while another 1,000 women
groups would go home with N10 million cheque.
“As well, 1,000 youths would receive N10 million
cheque. This means every beneficiary will get N10,000
each,” Ndume said.

He, however, urged the beneficiaries to make
maximum use of the opportunity in order to become
self-reliant and sustained their businesses improve
their livelihood.

In their separate good will messages the
representatives of Emir’s of Biu and Shani commended
senator Ali Ndume for the empowerment initiatives,
which according to them would go a long way in
alleviating the economic harship amongst their
subjects.

Monday met in Lagos, and after over three hours of
closed doors session, unanimously again agree that
there is no going back on the ban on open grazing law
in the region.

The Governors, also, reiterated the call for true
federalism and devolution of powers to states.
Governor, Ondo State and Chairman, Southern
Governors’ Forum, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN,
stated these among others while reading communique
issues at end of the meeting of the Southern
Governors of Nigeria, held at the State House, Alausa,
Ikeja.

Governors present include: Delta-Ifeayin Okowa,
Rivers-Nyensom Wike, Ogun-Dapo Abiodun, Lagos
State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Osun-Gboyega Oyetola,
Akwa Ibom- Emmanuel Udom, Ekiti Kayode Fayemi,
Bayelsa-Douye Diri, Oyo- Seyi Makinde, Enugu –

“Rising from the meeting, the Forum agreed on the
following: Re-affirmed their commitment to the unity
of Nigeria on the pillars of equity, fairness, justice,
progress and peaceful co-existence between and
amongst its people.

“The Forum reiterates its commitment to the politics of
equity, fairness and unanimously agrees that the
presidency of Nigeria be rotated between Southern
and Northern Nigeria and resolved that the next
president of Nigeria should emerge from the Southern
Region.

“On security, the forum reviewed the security
situation in the country and commends security
operatives for their relentless efforts in restoring
security and safety and commiserates with families
and loved ones of those who have fallen in the line of
duty;

“Re-emphasised the need for State Police;
“Resolved that if for any reason security institutions
need to undertake an operation in any state, the Chief
Security Officer of the State must be duly informed.

“The forum frowns at selective criminal
administration of Justice and resolved that arrests
should be made within the ambit of the Law and
fundamental human rights; Set a timeline of
Wednesday, 1st September 2021 for the promulgation
of the anti-open grazing law in all Member States; and

“Resolved that Funds deducted from the Federation
Account for the Nigeria Police Security Trust Fund
should be distributed among the States and Federal
Government to combat security challenges.

Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) Law: The Forum
commends the National Assembly for the progress
made in the passage of the PIB.

The Forum rejects the proposed 3% and supports the
5% share of the oil revenue to the host community as
recommended by the House of Representatives.

“The forum also rejects the proposed 30 per cent
share of profit for the exploration of oil and gas in the
basins.

The Advisory Board for The Nigeria Prize for
Literature has announced the shortlist of 11 drawn
from 202 books in the running for the 2021 edition
of the prize.

The 11 books on the shortlist, in alphabetical order
by the title of the book, are:

The list was presented by the Chairman, Panel of
Judges for this year’s Nigeria Prize for Literature,
Professor Toyin Jegede, who is a professor of
Literature in English at the University of Ibadan.

The other judges are Prof. Tanimu Abubakar and Dr
Solomon Azumurana. Professor Abubakar is a
Professor of Literature in the Faculty of Art, Ahmadu
Bello University, Zaria. Dr Azumurana is a Senior
Lecturer in the Department of English at the
University of Lagos.

The judges described the shortlist as fresh
approaches to looking at issues, using new and
exciting narrative strategies, techniques and well-
written organic plots to present topical discussions in
realistic ways.

The judges stated that there has been a visible
improvement in writing skills and commended
Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG , (founder and
sponsors of the prize), for giving writers the
platform to blossom and experiment.

As in the past, The Nigeria Prize for Literature,
Africa’s biggest reward for creative excellence, will
be keenly contested.
According to the Chairperson of the prize’s Advisory Board, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, the Board unanimously agreed that the shortlist of 11 was an excellent list.

She expressed her appreciation to the judges for a
thorough job in selecting the shortlist. She stated
that excellence was the watchword of the prize,
adding that the onus was on the Advisory Board to
continue in the tradition that was handed to them by
the past Board.

The Nigeria Prize for Literature has since 2004
rewarded eminent writers such as Gabriel Okara (co-
winner, 2005, poetry) for The Dreamer, His Vision;
Professor Ezenwa Ohaeto, for his volume of poetry,
Chants of a Minstrel (co-winner, 2005, poetry);
Ahmed Yerima (2005, drama) for his classic, Hard
Ground; Mabel Segun (co-winner, 2007, children’s
literature) for her collection of short plays Reader’s
Theatre; Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo (co-
winner, 2007, children’s literature) with her book,
My Cousin Sammy; Kaine Agary with her book,
Yellow Yellow (2008, prose); Esiaba Irobi (2010,
drama) who clinched the prize posthumously with
his book Cemetery Road; Adeleke Adeyemi (2011,
children’s literature) with his book The Missing
Clock; Chika Unigwe (2012, prose), with her novel,
On Black Sister’s Street; Tade Ipadeola (2013, poetry)
with his collection of poems, The Sahara Testaments;
Professor Sam Ukala (2014, drama) with his play,
Iredi War; Abubakar Adam Ibrahim with his novel
Season of Crimson Blossoms (2016, prose); Ikeogu
Oke with his collection of poetry, The Heresiad;
(2017, poetry); Soji Cole with his play, Embers (2018,
drama); and Jude Idada with his book, Boom, Boom
(2019, Children Literature).

The Nigeria Prize for Literature runs concurrently
with the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism (also
sponsored by NLNG), for which four entries were
received in 2020. The literary criticism prize carries
a monetary value of N1 million.

The Nigeria Prize for Literature rotates yearly
amongst four literary categories – prose fiction,
poetry, drama, and children’s literature.
A shortlist of three is expected in September. A
winner, if any, will be announced by the Advisory
Board in October.

LEGAL counsel to Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday
Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, Chief
Yomi Alliyu SAN, Sunday, sued the Department of
State Service, DSS, for attacking and damaging his
house, alleging that the DSS operatives went with the
intent not to arrest but kill him.

This came on a day Lagos Police Command said 49
persons, including suspected leader of Ogboni
confraternity and a female Osun worshipper, simply
identified as Yeye, were arrested during the botched
Oodua Republic Mega rally at the Gani Fawehinmi
Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos.

The Police said dangerous weapons such as arms,
ammunition, axes, cutlasses and charms were
recovered from the suspects.

But organizers of the rally, Ilana Omo Oodua, IOO,
called for the unconditional release of the arrested
protesters, insisting that none of the protesters was
armed.

FG trying to kill me —Igboho

Sunday Igboho’s counsel, Chief Alliyu, in a statement,
described the invasion as illegal and unconstitutional,
adding that the accusations leveled against his client
were false.

He also urged the Federal Government to probe the
invasion, to sanction the DSS operatives, free all the
people arrested and also demanded the payment of
N500 million to Igboho as compensation for the
damage to his exotic cars, including a Mercedes Benz
G-Class and 2019 Lexus car, among others.

The statement read: “We are counsel to Chief Sunday
Adeyemo (otherwise known as Sunday Igboho Oosa)
and we have his standing instructions to defend and
act as his counsel in all situations we deem
appropriate, especially where his fundamental rights
as a citizen of Nigeria is violated or threatened, as
done on Thursday, 1 July 2021.

“Every Nigerian, albeit the whole world, is aware that
in his open crusade for the establishment of Oodua
Republic, our client has always preached peace and
warned his followers never to have recourse to
violence, saying that ‘it is God and alale’ that will fight
for the Yoruba Nation.

“We can boldly say that, as people who followed his
campaign, but not necessarily supporting
dismemberment of Nigeria, no casualty has ever
occurred wherever such rallies were carried out. This
must have been done in more than 20 Yoruba towns
and cities, as of date.

“It must be reiterated, and with emphasis that it is the
right of a group of homogeneous and/or indigenous
people in a federation to ask for self-determination,
following the rules of international law and UNO
Charter.

“We were reliably informed that the DSS and other
security forces invaded the residence of our client in
wee hours of the day (between 1.00hr and 4.30hrs).

“There is nowhere in civilised world that a citizen,
who had no prior invitation by security agent or
resisting arrest, will be so invaded with his rights to
dignity of human persons, ownership of property and
sanctity of life trampled upon during the invasion.

“No demand to enter was made but rather, they shot
their way into the house, allegedly killing seven
people, though DSS spokesman admitted killing two
people which involved an old imam that used to lead
Muslim occupants in prayers and observing TAHJUD at
the time of the barbaric raid.

“A lady among the invaders was allegedly shouting, ‘if
you get him, gun him down.’ There and then our
client knew that the mission was to get rid of him and
not to arrest him.

“This belief becomes more realistic because the CCTV
recorder was off and taken away so that the carnage
will not be shown to members of the public. Our client
then knew that he was to be taking dead or alive as
allegedly stated by the lady among the raiders.

“It should be stated that without any resistance or
shooting at the security operatives, they started
shooting from the gate, ensuring that the building was
made uninhabitable. Also, all the expensive vehicles in
our client’ house were shot at and destroyed.

“The rampaging operatives were disappointed that
they could allegedly not find a single gun or
ammunition in our client’s house, hence they arrested
two police escorts of Mr. Igboho’s guests.

“(They) added their (the two police escorts) guns to
those harvested from their armoury to make members
of the public believe that our client keeps militia, or as
stated by them, he is about waging war on Nigeria.

“Will this be with his mere amulets? People who know
our client for over 20 years will testify that Igboho
Oosa does not carry a gun on his person
“It is elementary law that whenever a search warrant
is executed on a house the house owner must first
search the persons sent to execute same and also sign
the inventory of what was recovered in executing the
warrant.

“This explains why the DSS invaded the house in the
night, shooting everything at sight, killing and
maiming the occupants to plant their illegal guns on
our client.

“We have also been reliably informed that those
arrested were being tortured to incriminate our client
that guns and ammunition were recovered from his
house.

“Sunday Igboho knew that he would be arrested one
day hence retaining our services. He could not be that
daft to keep incriminating articles in his house.

“Our client’s house is a five-bedroom duplex with five
chalets of two and three bedrooms. These were
damaged with operatives allegedly arguing on
whether to burn down the edifice as done to his
former palatial house. The lady officer allegedly put
her foot down against arson.

“€1000, N2 million, expensive jewellery worth
millions, travel documents, amulets, iPhone 12
belonging to him, phones of about 15 others living in
the house, including those killed by the raiders and
other belongings yet to be identified belonging to his
wives were carted away. The only guns were those of
the police escorts of his guests.

“More importantly, the DSS and other operatives that
raided the house said they came to arrest Sunday
Igboho but ended up arresting innocent people instead
of him.

“Apart from being a serious violation of these peoples’
constitutional rights, it is an assault on Section 7 of
ACJA and decisions of our courts in that regard.

FG must probe DSS operatives involved in attack
“We, hereby, demand that the Federal Government
orders an investigation into the actions of the various
security operatives, led by DSS, that raided Chief
Adeyemo’s house to sanction them and release all the
innocent people arrested and compensate the families
of those murdered.

“Our client should also be paid N500million as
reparation for damage to his exotic cars that include
Mercedes Benz G-Class and 2019 Lexus Car. We also
demand a public apology.

“Most importantly, trampling of our client’s
fundamental rights, including tagging him as criminal
by exhibiting DSS guns as his should stop forthwith.”

Yoruba won’t be intimidated, says Kiriji Heritage
Defenders

Reacting to the invasion of Sunday Adeyemo’s house,
the Kiriji Heritage Defenders, insisted that Yoruba
people will not be intimidated from seeking freedom
for the Yoruba nation.

The group during the investiture ceremony of Alebiosu
Kalaowo as the generalissimo of its security arm at the
Kiriji war forest, Imesi-Ile, Osun State, at the weekend,
disclosed that it remained committed to realising an
independent Yoruba nation.

Speaking after his investiture, Kalaowo, said: “I am
using this medium to tell the world that despite the
attack on Sunday Igboho, we will not rest on our oars
to ensure that the Yoruba nation is free from slavery
from whomever and in whatever form.

“We are, hereby, giving anyone, whether Fulani, Igbo,
Yoruba and other ethnic groups one month to comply
with the ban on open grazing law in the region after
which it will become illegal to feed animals on farms.

”We will no longer condone the raping of women and
killings of farmers by violent herdsmen, making it
impossible for farmers’ activities to thrive.

“We are not working in isolation, but collaborating
with other Yoruba groups to ensure that the Yoruba
nation is liberated from the menace of violent
herdsmen and banish those lurking around our
borders with evil intent.”

Igboho should surrender himself —Olowu-Kuta

But on his part, the Olowu of Owu-Kuta in Osun State,
Oba Adekunle Makama, urged the Yoruba activist to
surrender himself to the Federal Government rather
than be hunted like his IPOB counterpart, Nnamdi
Kanu.

Oba Makama, who addressed newsmen at his palace
in Kuta, said: “Well, government all over the world
treats separatists as enemies of the state and as a
believer in the corporate existence of the Nigerian
state; I do not expect anything less.

”I would rather advise Igboho to surrender himself to
the government which will even earn him sympathy
than to sit until he is hunted.”

Yoruba Nation rally: Police arrest 49 suspects

Meanwhile, while parading the suspects arrested
during the Lagos rally organised by Yoruba Nation
agitators at the command headquarters, yesterday, the
Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, said the
suspects posed a threat to the security of the state
Odumosu said: “On Saturday, July 3, 2021, despite
warnings and security explanations given to
organizers of the rally to forestall breakdown of law
and orders in Lagos State, certain individuals came
into the state to foment troubles under the guise of the
said mega rally
” In curtailing their activities that portend threat to the
security of the state, the command arrested 49
suspects.

“They include Bamidele Akomolafe, 52; Dauda
Abubakare, 25; Adebanjo Adedajo, 42; Lawal Akeem,
21; Abdulsemiu Akanbi, 43; Emmanuel Chidiemere,
27; Taofeek Abdulsalami, 25; Adesina Ibrahim, 33 and
Adeyemi Segun, 22 and 39 others.

“Items recovered from them include one pump action
rifle, two locally made pistols, four live cartridges, one
expended cartridge and stickers with the inscription
‘Oodua Armed Forces.

“Also recovered were one Opel car with registration
number FFF 921, one unregistered Toyota 4 Runner
SUV, one Honda car with registration number SMK
248 FC, one Nissan pathfinder SUV with registration
number ABJ 348 DB, One Suzuki minibus with plate
number LSR980 YC, one beaded crown, one beaded
walking stick, a white box containing assorted charms,
some Oodua flags and banners, clothes and caps with
Oodua Nation inscriptions, some voodoo charm
jackets, one traditional calabash containing weeds
suspected to be Indian hemp, some mobile phones,
clothes, two axes.

“In summary, a total of six arms, 18 7.62mm
ammunition, 19 live cartridges and one expended
cartridge were recovered.”

The Police boss, however, insisted that information at
the command’s disposal was that the protesters were
out to cause unrest in several parts of the state.

Odumosu said: “Coupled with the conduct of the so-
called agitators and others that despite repeated
warnings from the command and the Lagos State
government, trooped out for the planned rally, one
could easily infer that they were not in Lagos state for
a rally but another mission geared towards
destabilizing the state.”

The suspects, according to him, will be handed over to
the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID,
Yaba, for discreet investigation and possible
prosecution.

Protesters weren’t armed, Ilana Omo Oodua insists
But in its reaction, organizers of the Yoruba Nation
rally, Ilana Omo Oodua, disagreed, insisting that no
participant at the rally was armed.
It also called for the unconditional release of those
arrested during the rally.

IOO’s Media Communications Secretary, Mr. Maxwell
Adeleye, said: “We approached the Police that they
should come and protect us so that the rally will not
be hijacked. We went to the rally ground peacefully
and law-abiding. We were not unruly.

“We met the Police at the rally ground and told them
that we were for peace but they started raining bullets
at us. Whatever the Police said is a lie.

“The Police did not say those arrested committed any
crime but that they violated an order that nobody
should any rally in Lagos.

“We have a track record of peaceful assembly. The
Police have paraded them that they are criminals. If
they want to take them to the court, fine; but we wish
to engage them in the court. We are calling for the
unconditional release of these protesters.”

Police action unacceptable—Ijaw leader

Also, the Coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group,
IMG, Comrade Joseph Evah, berated the Police for
tear-gassing those who participated in the Yoruba
Nation rally in Lagos, saying such action was
unacceptable.

Reacting to the action, Evah said the action of the
Police should be condemned.

The Ijaw leader said: “We, the Ijaw Monitoring Group,
condemn the action of the Police who tear-gassed
peaceful protesters in Lagos.

”Peaceful protest is recognised under the 1999
Constitution and United Nations charter. The action of
the Police was unruly, they are meant to protect
innocent citizens and not attack them, they also
injured elderly people who participated in the protest.

”The police need to apologise for their unruly
behaviour because if this is allowed, no one will be
allowed to organise any peaceful protest.

”What the Police did in Lagos is unacceptable and we
are condemning it. We also want the whole world to
know what happened because those who participated
in the rally were peaceful.

”It should be known that it was the police that caused
the confusion that led to the injuries recorded in the
Lagos rally. If we don’t condemn this, nobody will be
allowed to assemble in Nigeria. This is against
international law.”

Mother of lady killed by stray bullet cries for justice
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ifeoluwa Adeeko, the mother of the
lady purportedly killed by a Police stray bullet during
Saturday’s Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos, has insisted
that it was stray bullet by the police that killed her
daughter and cried for justice to be done in the case.

The victim, simply identified as Jumoke Muriana, was
allegedly killed by a stray bullet when policemen fired
gunshots to disperse the crowd that gathered for the
rally. But the police denied any involvement in
Jumoke’s death.

The mother wept uncontrollably at the sight of the
lifeless body of her daughter.

Amid tears, Mrs. Adeeko said her daughter was 25
years, contrary to earlier reported 14 years in the
media.

She said: “I want justice in this case; my daughter was
killed by a stray bullet. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
should come to my rescue and ensure justice for the
killing of my daughter by the police.”

and activists have begun process to take the police up
on the murder

Also, Governor Sanwo-Olu has ordered immediate
thorough investigation into the death of a lady
allegedly killed by a stray bullet during Saturday’s
rally.

In a statement by the Attorney-General and
Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, stated
that a Coroner’s Inquest has immediately been
requested in line with section 14 and 15 of the
Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to
determine the cause and circumstances of death.

The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been
drawn to the death of a 14-year-old girl in Ojota
during the Oodua Republic Mega Rally on Saturday,
3rd of July, 2021.

“We commiserate with the family of the deceased.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a thorough
investigation ohe death.

“As a government, the security and wellbeing of
citizens are of utmost importance to us. The State
assures the public that everything will be done to
ensure that the cause of death is known. The findings
of this investigation will be made public in due course
and appropriatesanctions meted out to anyone found
culpable
