Politics / PDP Vows To Drags Buhari To ICC by Meekdon: 8:24pm On Aug 27, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to do everything legitimately possible to ensure that the International Criminal Court (ICC) holds President Muhammadu Buhari responsible for human rights violation and abuses under his watch.

The party said it would mobilize Nigerians to stop the President from introducing “the long forgotten trappings of military dictatorship into a democratic regime” which it said Nigerians laboured for many years to attain.

It would be recalled that Buhari, while declaring open the 2018 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), declared that the nation’s security cannot be sacrificed on the altar of individual rights and rule of law.

The President, in his speech, urged lawyers to put national security over and above the rule of law.

But in a statement on Monday, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP National Publicity Secretary, said the President’s assertion was a direct trademark of despotic rulers, adding that cannot find expression in a democratic setting.

The party further stated that it will not stop at anything legitimate to ensure that the International Criminal Court (ICC) holds President Buhari responsible for violations of rule of law and criminal abuse of human rights committed under his rule in the last three years.

“It is instructive to note that contrary to claims by Mr. President, there is no pronouncement by the Supreme Court that subjugates constitutional rule of law and rights of citizens to the whims, caprices and dictatorial impulses of any President.

“Our national interest is thoroughly embedded, protected, expressed and enforced only under the rule of law as provided by our constitution and there is no how Nigerians can allow an individual to superimpose or override the constitution with his personal whims and impulses; a pattern that is characteristic of known dictators all over the world, as expressed in the obnoxious Executive Order 6, designed to justify a complete clamp down of political opponents ahead of 2019 general elections,” Ologbondiyan stated.

“This is in addition to the quest to forcefully remove the leadership of the National Assembly, the blockade of the National Assembly and siege of the official residences of the Senate President and Deputy Senate President by Presidency controlled-security forces.

“We know that President Buhari is apprehensive of the electoral defeat that awaits him in February 2019 for which he is seeking ways to subvert the system, but we caution that in this desperation to hold unto to power, he must not seek to again, subvert our constitutional order as he will be firmly resisted by Nigerians”.

Politics / 2019: Why Buhari Should Not Seek Re-election – Archbishop Ekuwem by Meekdon: 9:09pm On Aug 26, 2018
The Metropolitan Bishop of the Calabar Archdiocese, His Grace, Most, Rev. Joseph Ekuwem has given reasons President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek re-election.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday shortly after a 3-day Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), the Cleric lamented the senseless killing that cut across Nigeria.
“There is no section of the constitution that forbids Mr. President from seeking re-election but he can only seek for re-election if he is able to stop the senseless killings on-going in several parts of the country, otherwise he should not run again.
“Besides, if this is what we call change, that was being trumpeted, and Mr. President is not able to defend and secure life in Nigeria, the Nigerian Bishops say resign,” he stated.
He said that the Bishops condemned the incessant killings of innocent citizens in some part of country, noting that the church had written letters to the federal Government to address the situation with no further delay.
“If the President sees himself as lacking the capacity to handle the situation, he should resign before the situation escalates to war. As a church, we are still angry with the development,” he added.
As it concerns defection, he said, “We hear of decamping on daily basis, does it in any way add value to the socio-political economy of our nation? Does it make political life in Nigeria better than before? These are issues that became worrisome to the conference.
“We cannot sit down and fold our hands, fail to do the needful so that we can participate in the political process, only to look for who to blame when the process to elect our leaders commences.”
The Archbishop listed another issue that was worrisome to Church to include the use of youths as political thugs during electioneering era with a view to destabilizing the process.
He warned that those who failed to avail themselves of the opportunity of collecting their PVCs from the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should not cry foul that they had been schemed out from the political process.
“How many of us have the voter’s cards? How prepared are we amidst crisscrossing/cross carpeting of our politicians who move from one political party to another and back to the same political party that they dumped?” He asked.

Sports / EPL: Why We Drew Against Wolve – Manchester City Coach, Pep Guardiola by Meekdon: 4:59pm On Aug 25, 2018
Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola has explained why his side played a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League fixture.

Willy Boly opened scoring in the 57th minute for the home side before Aymeric Laporte equalized for Guardiola’s men in 69 minutes.

Guardiola said City drew because Wolve’s goalkeeper, Patricio made a lot of saves to prevent the Citizens from wining the match.

The Spaniard, however, praised his players for getting a point from the encounter.

“It was a very good point,” Guardiola told BBC Sport after the game. “We created chances but their keeper made saves, so today we draw. We knew how good they were this season.

“No complaints. We were in the second half four, five, six times in attack, but it’s always complicated. We created a lot, that’s why it’s good.

“In the first half Aguero hit the post, sometimes it goes in, sometimes not. It’s just we were not solid defensively today. That is why we conceded a few chances to them but in general the game, considering the quality of the opponent, was good. We have to give credit,” he said.

Politics / Osun Guber: PDP Candidate, Adeleke Backs Inec’s Move Against Vote Buying by Meekdon: 4:29pm On Aug 25, 2018
The flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming governorship election of September 22 in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke has decried the menace of vote buying during elections, as he played host to British envoy in Ede, his ancestral home.

Adeleke, while receiving the Political Adviser of the British High Commission, Lagos, Mr Wale Adebajo, said he was ready to support the plan by Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) to disallow the usage of phones at polling booths, with a view to preventing acts of vote buying and other electoral malpractices.

He commended the commission for what he termed pragmatic and dynamic process of operation that is aimed at improving on the credibility of the electoral process.

“To me, INEC knows what they are doing and whatever will prevent vote buying, we should give them chance to do it. They plan and improve everyday ahead of the election. Before, they introduced card readers, there were a lot of rigging, but now card readers have reduced rigging.

“No election is perfect, even the ones conducted in the United States, they are still striving to improve and I believe our own would not be different. Whatever INEC want to do to prevent rigging, to prevent people from snapping their ballots papers to show people who paid them for votes should be supported. It is a welcome development and we should give them chance to do their job,” he said.

Commenting on the British envoys’ visit, Adeleke said, “they came to have an audience with me. They discussed with me about the election that is coming up in September 22.

“They came to offer assistance in terms of monitoring the election and supporting Nigeria democracy. They asked a lot of questions on how are we sure the election is going to be free and fair. We believe the election is going to be free and fair. They are part of the process to make the election free and fair. We appreciate them for coming.

On the speculation that some desperate politicians were planning to abduct chieftains of the PDP before the poll, he said “though it is still a rumour, but we must take it seriously.

“We heard that they were planning to kidnap some PDP elders before the election, I believe the security agencies know their jobs and we can’t tell them how to do their job. We have passed the information to them and they know what to do”.

Meanwhile, the British envoys refused to speak to journalists as all efforts made by newsmen to find out the reason behind their visit practically proved abortive.

Politics / Killings: Buhari blows hot over banditry, charges soldiers to be ruthless by Meekdon: 3:54pm On Aug 25, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in Katsina praised Nigerian troops for their service and dedication to the nation, urging them to remain ‘‘ruthless’’ in the battle against bandits, criminals and kidnappers.

Shortly before leaving for Abuja through the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, the President interacted with troops deployed to curb the activities of bandits and criminals in Zamfara and neighbouring states under Operations Sharan Daji and Diran Mikiya.

The unannounced visit was intended to appreciate the work of the Nigerian Armed Forces, for the results that are being achieved in securing the nation and its people.

During the interaction, the President applauded officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Army for the counter-offensive against bandits in Zamfara State and environs, assuring them of his full support as ‘‘a worthy Commander-in-Chief.’’

He urged officers and men to keep up the good work in the results achieved in dealing with banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in the affected States, within the short period of the operation’s existence.

His words: ‘‘I am here and pleased at this opportunity to address you and express my pleasure and happiness as your Commander-in-Chief on your performance on the two respective operations.

‘‘Nigerians are looking up to you and us to secure the country. What is happening in the areas of operations are disgraceful. I’m very pleased with the way officers and men are firmly putting it down and I want you to be as ruthless as humanly possible. Nigerians deserve some peace.’’

The President reminded the troops that when he was elected into office in 2015, he promised the nation security, an improved economy and a commitment to fight corruption.

‘‘The country has to be secured to be managed…we have been doing our best and we depend a lot on you to do what is needed in the field. I do not want you to spare any cattle rustler, armed robber or any person who thinks he is above the law.

‘‘I commend you for the job you have been doing so far and I assure you that I will continue to be a worthy Commander-in-Chief. Thank you very much and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ the President said.

In his brief to the President, Air Vice Marshall Sampson Akpasa, the Air Officer Commanding Special Operations Command, NAF, said locations such as Mashema, Shinkafi, Ajia, Rafi, Shamashalle, Zurmi and Galadi in Zamfara State, previously used as staging and trading bases by the bandits have been made untenable through sustained air interdiction and armed reconnaissance.

‘‘The air efforts in the last couple of weeks also provided close air support to ground troops on various occasions. Additionally, the Air Task Force(ATF) responded to several distress calls from sister security forces and locals by neutralising the identified massed bandits and preventing imminent attacks on villages/towns such as Yanwari and Hayin Alhaj,” Akpasa said.

Politics / Osun Election: INEC Warns Against Vote Buying, Usage Of Mobile Phones At Units by Meekdon: 7:35pm On Aug 23, 2018
Ahead of the September 22 governorship election in Osun State, Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, has warned against vote buying and usage of mobile phones at polling units.

Agbaje , while addressing newsmen at the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Osogbo stressed that commission would guide against vote selling and buying as well as usage of mobile phones during casting of ballots.

According to him, “It is embarrassing to have three security agents at a polling unit and vote buying still takes place at such polling unit, right in front of these security people.

“We have been talking with politicians because if they don’t bring money to the polling units, nobody would be selling their votes.

“Even according to law, vote buying is a serious offense, but INEC is not empowered to arrest people, and security officials arranged for the elections are not doing anything when this kind of situation is taking place.

“As a retired security personnel myself, I will also be going round the polling units too and arrest people who engage in vote buying.

“You will agree with me that Osun is the last major election before 2019 general election, it naturally serves as a template for the general election so, All hands must be on deck to ensure credible process”, he said.

Politics / Defections: Rep Calls PDP Dumping Ground For Waste Products by Meekdon: 7:34pm On Aug 22, 2018
The lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Mr Peter Akpatason, said on Wednesday that politicians dumping the APC for other parties did not fit into the vision of the ruling party.
Speaking to newsmen in Benin, Akpatason stated that the defectors won elections in 2015 because of the “good people” they met in the APC.
The lawmaker said the defectors would fail in the elections slated for next year because they left “good people” in the APC to join “bad people.”
He argued that the main opposition PDP was not a beautiful bride for defectors, but a dumping ground for those he described as “waste products. ”
“For you to effect development, you need the good, the bad and the ugly, but in the process of development, you begin to see the good from the bad and the ugly”, NAN quoted him as saying.
“At some point, it becomes clear to some people that they do not fit into the system and that is what is happening now. They jump ship to where they actually belong.
“Some people jumped ship some years ago because they wanted to contest election and they thought it was the APC platform and also the Buhari tsunami, including the dynamics of their local politics.
“PDP is a dumping ground for waste products and not a beautiful bride. Somebody who decamped four years ago and is defecting now is a waste product.
“They don’t have value to add to the system. People of value who command respect do not defect but only political merchants who see political parties as a platform resort to defecting.”

Sports / Transfer: Hazard To Sign New Chelsea Contract On One Condition by Meekdon: 7:17pm On Aug 22, 2018
Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard has given the club condition to signing a new contract.
Hazard, according to the Times UK, said he will extend his deal with the Blues only if they qualify for next Champion League.
Chelsea failed to make Premier League top four last season and will not be playing in Europe’s elite competition this season.
The Belgian wants to see if this season will be different before he agrees to sign a new contract.
Hazard looked like he was off to Real Madrid after hinting that his time at Stamford Bridge could be coming to an end, however, it now looks like the Belgium international will stay in west London.
Chelsea will offer Hazard a new deal at the club, improving his weekly wage from £220,000 to £300,000.
However, Hazard will only put pen to paper if they secure Champions League football.

Politics / 2019 INEC Budget: BMO Speaks On Buhari Being ‘voodoo, Magic’ Leader by Meekdon: 7:39pm On Aug 21, 2018
The Buhari Media Organisation, BMO, on Tuesday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will always work with facts and verified figures as he does not believe in voodoo arrangements or magic.

BMO said this in response to Senate President Bukola Saraki’s statement that the Buhari’s administration should have submitted the budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, earlier than it did.

Saraki, in a statement, had said the request should have been submitted along with the 2018 Appropriation Bill.

Reacting to Saraki’s remark, BMO said such was impossible because of special circumstances surrounding the request, News Agency of Nigeria.

NAN, reports that in a statement signed by the Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and the Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO said the President should not be expected to make provision for a 2019 Budget item in the 2018 Proposal which he actually submitted to the National Assembly in 2017.

BMO reminded Saraki that the Budget submitted in 2017 was for the 2018 fiscal year.

The statement reads, “Even that was not approved by the NASS until 6 months after. In any case, INEC would have needed time to prepare for its list of election expenses for 2019. Some key factors would need to be considered; such as the actual number of elections to be held in that year, the number of registered voters, the number of political parties to participate, and security assessments for the elections depending on how politicians have heated up the polity . All these information would be needed before INEC could prepare a budget of expenses for a 2019 elections and that certainly could not have accompanied the 2018 Budget proposal submitted in 2017”.

For emphasis, BMO said President Buhari does not believe in voodoo arrangements or magic and would always work with facts and verified figures.

“Besides, it is standard practice globally for executive branch of government to submit for virement or supplementary budget where it finds that it has to spend money on items not captured in its current budget.

“What we’re seeing is a parliament using its constitutional powers to politicise a very normal process of seeking approval by the executive, all in an attempt to misinform the public and whip up sympathy for its inability to work in the common interest of the people; all because of their own personal reasons and the fear of change of their own leadership,” the statement added.

Politics / Wike Slams Police For Allegedly Disrupting Bye-election by Meekdon: 7:30pm On Aug 19, 2018
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has blamed the Police for the suspension of Saturday’s Port Harcourt Constituency Three bye-election.

Governor Wike stated that the consistency with which the Police sabotages the electoral process in Rivers State amounts to a declaration of war on the people.

He said despite assurances from the Rivers State Commissioner of Police during the last State Security Council meeting that the police will remain neutral and act professionally, the police on Saturday August 18, 2018, allegedly joined forces with APC thugs to disrupt the election.

In a state broadcast on the Port Harcourt State Constituency Three bye-election disrupted by gunmen, Governor Wike charged Rivers people not to succumb to the antics of the police.

He alleged that State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ojukaye Flag Amachree led the disruption of the process.

According to Wike, “The consistent sabotage of the electoral process by the Police amounts to a declaration of war against the people of Rivers State and their solemn rights to freely and fairly choose their leaders and representatives.

“Clearly there are dangerous times ahead but we must not give in to intimidation lest we loose our liberties and become slaves in our own land.

“Against the backdrop it is up to the people of Rivers State to choose the option that will serve their interest.”

“As we had feared, the Police failed us completely once again and negated all that they promised. Instead of providing security for voters and INEC officials the Police brazenly colluded with political thugs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the democratic process and denied the people of Port Harcourt Constituency III their rights to free, fair and credible elections.

“Confirmed reports from the field indicated that INEC promptly and rightly distributed elections materials to all the polling units within a recorded time.

“However, while voting was underway, armed thugs from the APC led by the State’s factional Chairman, Mr. Flag Ojukaye Amachree moved freely from one polling unit to the other, violently assaulted voters and INEC officials and carted away election materials, including smart card readers and ballot boxes.”

“It is important to note that Ojukaye Flag Amachree who led the thugs is the same person facing multiple murder trial and instead of arresting him as ordered by the trial court, the Police has continued to aid and shield him from arrest and prosecution.

“It is equally important to note that Ojukaye Flag Amachree and his thugs freely and easily overran the entire constituency and successfully disenfranchised the electorates with the active support, protection and guidance of heavily armed Police operatives from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) and the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit.

“This situation is worrisome. If the Nigerian Police cannot secure and guarantee the peaceful and successful conduct of election in a single State Constituency of 8 wards, then what will happen in 2019 when they would be contending with 319 electoral wards and 4442 polling units across 23 Local Government Areas of the State?”

While the Rivers State Governor commended INEC for acting professionally, he berated the police for allegedly taking sides and offering illegal aid to APC to undermine the electoral process in the state.

Politics / Yinka Ayefele: Gov. Ajimobi Under Fire Over Demolition Of Fresh Fm’s Building by Meekdon: 7:18pm On Aug 19, 2018
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has accused the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi of executive rascality over “the unlawful demolition of Fresh FM building owned by Yinka Ayefele, and the forced evictions of residents by the Oyo State government”.

SERAP, in a statement on Sunday signed by its deputy director, Timothy Adewale, condemned the “gross abuse of powers by the Oyo State government and governor Ajimobi against a radio station simply doing their job.”

SEEAP insisted that the action was politically-motivated, patently arbitrary and entirely inconsistent with international human rights standards and national laws.

The organization said, “the destruction of a radio station on the grounds that the Oyo state government dislikes their work is a textbook case of repression of media freedom and violation of the right to adequate housing. The authorities must immediately stop the demolition, ensure appropriate repairs of the building and adequate compensation, and guarantee of non-repetition. SERAP will challenge this violent and reckless destruction of Ayefele’s Fresh FM in court.

“The Oyo State government has not only engaged in forced eviction but also violated the right to adequate housing, the right to freedom of expression and media freedom.

“It is the obligation of Oyo State government to ensure that Ayefele and everyone affected by this act of illegality is adequately compensated for the property of Fresh FM that has been demolished.

“Nigeria is a state party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which requires Oyo State government to refrain from arbitrary forced evictions and arbitrary destruction of resources that individuals and families have invested in building their homes.

“Nigeria has also ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protects individuals from arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, and guarantees everyone the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attack.

“In its “Resolution on Forced Evictions,” the U.N. Commission on Human Rights affirmed that forced evictions constitute a gross violation of human rights.

“The term “forced eviction” is defined for the purposes of international law as the permanent or temporary removal against their will of individuals, families and/or communities from the homes and/or land which they occupy, without the provision of, and access to, appropriate forms of legal or other protection.

“It is important to note that international standards focus on protecting individuals who occupy homes and land and do not depend on any particular form of ownership title to the land or house, nor on the legality of the occupancy.”

Politics / Stop Unnecessary Flexing Of Muscles – ACF Warns Presidency, NASS by Meekdon: 1:50pm On Aug 17, 2018
The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has called on the Presidency and the National Assembly to stop what it termed the “unnecessary flexing of muscle.”

ACF said both the executive and the legislature should sheathe their sword in the interest of Nigerians.

In a communiqué signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, ACF said the crisis between both arms of government has not only affected governance, but also the polity and growth of democracy in Nigeria.

The communique reads, “Both the executive and the NASS members are in place in order to deliver on the promise of democracy and not to engage in unnecessary flexing of muscles that have nothing to do with real issues of real concern to real ordinary Nigerians.

“NEC, therefore, applauded the actions taken by the FG and urged the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate the immediate and remote causes of the NASS invasion by the DSS personnel in order to unveil the truth and to sanction all those found culpable, no matter their status both within and without the service.

“And because punitive measure was never taken against those involved in similar episodes in the past, it has encouraged the DSS to do what it recently did to the NASS.”

Sports / EPL: Berbatov Speaks On ‘fight’ Between Pogba, Mourinho by Meekdon: 8:05pm On Aug 16, 2018
Former Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov has disclosed that manager, Jose Mourinho and midfielder, Paul Pogba will figure out their ‘fight’.

Mourinho and Pogba are no longer on speaking terms after the United boss told the player to hand in a transfer request if he wanted to leave the club ‘again’.

The former Chelsea manager clashed with the French star this week at United’s training ground following Pogba’s controversial comments after the Red Devils’ 2-1 win against Leicester City on Friday.

Pogba confirmed his unhappiness at the club by telling reporters after the game that “There are things I can say and there are things that I cannot say, otherwise I will get fined.”

According to Daily Mail, Berbatov believes talk of a rift between the duo is being blown out of proportion, adding that talk of a transfer for Pogba was considered to have been exaggerated.

“I was very happy with the display of Paul Pogba against Leicester, it was a real captain’s performance,” Berbatov told betfair.

“He was everywhere on the pitch, passed it well, took the penalty with confidence – considering it was the first game, it was very encouraging.

“There has been chat in the media about him being unhappy, but I think the newspapers and social media are always focused on that side of things, trying to find problems that aren’t necessarily there, constantly exaggerating – it’s on the pitch that matters.

“These stories are not good for anybody, but Jose and Pogba will figure it out.”

Politics / 2019:how Buhari Plans To Use Dead People, Underage Children To Rig Election -PDP by Meekdon: 7:55pm On Aug 16, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari was planning to use dead persons and underage children to rig the 2019 election.

The Party said that this was the main reason the President had allegedly refused to sign the electoral act amendment.

In a series of tweets on Thursday evening, the main opposition party said that Buhari was holding the country to ransom to achieve his personal ambition.

PDP wrote, “Why @MBuhari is jittery, embattled over Electoral Act: President @MBuhari, in his desperation to achieve a personal ambition, is holding the nation to ransom by refusing to sign the Electoral Act Amendment bill, passed by @nassnigeria to check manipulations during elections.

“The amendment bill also provides for Instant Transmission of Results from polling to collation centers which ensures real-time results and reduces human interferences and election malpractices, thus effectively checking the alteration of results by the @APC.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash, which occurred around 1.30pm, was caused by overspeeding and loss of control on the part of the truck driver.
