Legal practice still pays but only if you know people in the A list firms and probably if you have got great result, most A list firms prefer to take lawyers with great results both from the university and law school.
Study well if you don’t want to end up as ‘a charge and bail’ with a faded black suit tongue

Politics / Akeredolu Petitions The Police Over Former Ssg's Allegation Of Electoral Fraud by Meenatnigeria(f): 8:57am On Jul 16, 2020
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Ondo state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu have petitioned the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Salami Bolaji over former Secretary to the State Government, Ifedayo Abegunde's claim of rigging 2016 governorship election in Akeredolu's favour.

It was reported that Abegunde who insisted that Akeredolu did not win the 2016 governorship election while speaking on a programme on Crest 87.7 Fm, said he (Akeredolu) lost the 2016 governorship poll to the then Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Eyitayo Jegede. He revealed that some "moneybags" in the All Progressives Congress (APC) including himself, rigged Akeredolu into power in 2016 by manipulating the election result in his favour.

In the petition written to the police by his lawyer Mr. Femi Emmanuel Emodamori, Akeredolu stated that such a claim needs to be investigated. He also described the allegation as false, reckless, senseless, and criminal.

"According to the official result of the governorship election published by INEC, APC and its candidate, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu polled 224, 842 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in the election, Eyitayo Jegede, polled 150, 380 votes.

"The Alliance for Democracy and its candidate in the election, Chief Olusola Oke, came third, with total votes of 126,889.

"Our clients emphatically state that the much-publicised allegation of manipulation of the 2016 Ondo State election by Sunday Ifedayo Abegunde is diametrically spurious, false, reckless, senseless, and criminal.

"It was made to scandalise our clients, particularly the governor, three and half years after the undisputed election, and after Sunday Ifedayo Abegunde parted ways with the current government of Ondo State.

"You would agree with us that electoral integrity is a severe and sensitive issue in Nigeria. For any person to fraudulently procure the return of any other person to an elective office, whether directly or indirectly, is a criminal offence punishable with twelve (12) months imprisonment, under section 124(1) (a) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended).

"We have the instruction of our clients to call on your office to set all the necessary machinery in motion.

Politics / Kogi Governor Extols Women In Security, urges For More Commitment by Meenatnigeria(f): 8:31pm On Jul 11, 2020
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has extolled the women in security in Nigeria for their resilient and commitment toward ensuring a safe nation for all.

The Governor urged female security personnel in the country to imbibe discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Bello gave the commendation and charge on Friday during a visit to the National Institute for Security Studies, Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, where he attended the closing ceremony of a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) Course.

He said the general believe that women lack the physical strength and endurance to serve in either military or paramilitary services was not tenable as many young women in the service have demonstrated their capacity to defend the country in the maintenance of peace.

The governor noted that the integration of women in the military and paramilitary organisations over the years was a welcome development, adding that it was based on the recognition of women in such endeavour that a more people-centric approach to security is necessary given the effect of insecurity on civilians, and mostly women and children.

"the security situation in the country today requires a more conciliatory approach, especially where paramilitary tasks include the protection of populations which has led to demands to increase the number of women in maintenance of peace in the society today".

While responding to the commendation by the Honourable Minister for Women and Affairs Dame Pauline Talen at the occasion for being the first Governor in the history of the country to chose a female Aide De Camp, Bello noted female in the services undergo equal training just like the male counterparts noting, that there shouldn’t be such thing as discrimination on the basis of sex. Crime / Re: Police Parade 'abortion Nurse' And Pastor Who Sleeps With His Own Daughter by Meenatnigeria(f): 10:22pm On Jul 10, 2020
budaatum:

Why was she paraded? Is provision of family planning a crime in Ogun State?

Abortion is a crime in Nigeria, she also aided in the crime of ‘incest’. She’s an accomplice to the crimes
Crime / Police Parade 'abortion Nurse' And Pastor Who Sleeps With His Own Daughter by Meenatnigeria(f): 9:20pm On Jul 10, 2020
According to TheGuardian, the police, yesterday, paraded a nurse, Mrs Ogundimu Monilola, accused of helping a 44-year-old pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Ogo Oluwa parish, Olokuta, Ogun State, Oluwafemi Oyebola, to procure family planning care for his 24-year-old daughter, whom he impregnated three times.

Monilola, who claimed to be Assistant Chief Matron at the State General Hospital, Idiroko, Ogun State, said she is also the health worker in charge of the family planning service at the facility.

She denied carrying out any abortion on Pastor Oyebola’s daughter, but the police said she had in her statement earlier admitted performing abortions on the girl who opted to remain anonymous.

She said she was on duty at a particular day when the man presented the girl for family planning at the hospital, claiming the girl was his house help, while a man, who identified himself as James, stood as the husband of the girl.

According to her, she never knew the family planning sought by the girl was targeted at shielding the incestuous lifestyle of the pastor. She also declared that the family planning service sought and obtained by the girl at the facility was official and well documented, explaining that it is legitimate for any female that is 18 years and above to seek and obtain family planning care from a hospital.

Nurse Monilola was paraded before reporters at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, with Pastor Oyebola by the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson.

Ebrimson said the offence allegedly committed by Oyebola is “incest” and that he had been perpetrating it with his daughter since 2015, leading to three pregnancies, termination of the three and subsequent family planning for the girl to step up the incestuous lifestyle without any risk of further pregnancy until the secret leaked in 2020.

The pastor, who claimed to be the leader of a deliverance team at the Ogo-Oluwa parish of CAC, admitted that the incestuous acts with his daughter was a “mistake resulting from a spiritual attack.”

He explained that an “unclean spirit” lured him into the affairs with his daughter and appealed to Nigerians, the government and the Christian community to forgive him.

It was gathered that the illicit affairs burst after the daughter, who had recently finished her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was unwilling to stay further with her father in the same house. When the pastor continued to oppose her resolve to leave home for

Lagos, the girl ran away and reported her ordeals to a Non-Governmental Organisation, the Advocacy for Children And Vulnerable Persons Network.

The NGO eventually led her to the Owode-Egbado Divisional headquarters, where she reported that her father had been forcefully having carnal knowledge of her since 2015 when she was 19-year-old and shortly after the demise of her mother.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) says it excommunicated Gideon Bakare, one of its pastors, for attempting adultery.

In a viral video, Bakare was caught sitting half naked in a compromising position with a woman who is described as a wife of a member of the church’s branch in Akure, Ondo state capital.

Olaitan Olubiyi, RCCG spokesperson, in a statement on Wednesday, said Bakare, by his act, had put the church in a bad light.

“The Redeemed Christian Church of God has excommunicated Mr Gideon Bakare and relieved him of all ministerial duties in the Mission,” the statement read.

“Bakare, who was an Assistant Pastor in the Church was recently accused of attempted act of adultery with a woman in her matrimonial home in Akure, Ondo State.

“The Church dissociated itself from such immoral act of Mr Bakare and described it as being completely contrary to the core values, doctrines, beliefs and practices of the RCCG and the undiluted word of God.

“The Church, after reviewing the report of her investigation, noted that by his conduct, Bakare has not only tainted his personal reputation but has portrayed the Church in a bad light.

”Mr Bakare has therefore been directed to return all official items in his custody and stay off all associated connections with the Mission with immediate effect.”

Crime / EFCC Re-Arraigns Air Commodore Umar Over Money Laundering Allegations by Meenatnigeria(f): 7:11am On Jul 09, 2020
Alleged money laundering: EFCC re-arraigns Air Commodore Umar

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), on Wednesday re-arraigned a member of the Presidential Committee on procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces, Air Commodore Umar Mohammed (Rtd) in a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mohammed was re-arraigned with his company, Easy Jet Integrated Services Limited before Justice Inyang Ekwo.

He was re-arraigned on an amended five-count charge bordering on money laundering, illegal possession of firearms and possession of official documents without lawful authority.

Mohammed pleaded not guilty to all counts just as a not guilty plea was entered for his company.

Following the not guilty plea, prosecuting counsel, Mr Sanusi Dakat prayed the court for a date to commence trial.

Dakat also told the court that he would call seven witnesses who were all within the jurisdiction of the court to prove his case.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Y.D. Dangana prayed the court to re-admit Mohammed to bail on the conditions earlier granted by the previous judges he was arraigned before.

In his ruling, the trial judge, justice Inyang Ekwo admitted Mohammed to bail on the terms earlier granted and adjourned the matter until Oct. 12 to 15 for trial.

Mohammed and his company had been previously arraigned before Justices Nnamdi Dimgba and John Tsoho of the same court and were admitted to bail.

Mohammed’s rearraignment was informed by the transfer of the case to another judge and the amendment of the earlier charge by the prosecution.

Mohammed and his company are accused of conspiracy to commit money laundering, illegal possession of firearms and secret act violation.

The Department of State Service (DSS) arrested Umar in June 2016 for allegedly fronting for other members of the Presidential Arms Panel in receiving large sums of money from certain individuals and companies in order to evade prosecution.(NAN)

TV/Movies / US Govt Reveals Plans To Ban Tiktok & Other Chinese Social Media Apps by Meenatnigeria(f): 3:07pm On Jul 07, 2020
Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of state suggested the move during an interview with Fox News' Laura Ingraham on Monday, July 6.

When asked by Ingraham whether the United States should be considering a ban on Chinese social media apps, "especially TikTok."

He said: "With respect to Chinese apps on people's cell phones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right too, Laura. I don't want to get out in front of the President [Donald Trump], but it's something we're looking at."

Washington's top diplomat added that people should only download the app "if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party."

His comment comes after US lawmakers raised national security concerns over TikTok's handling of user data, accusing the short-form video app of being a threat to national security because of its ties to China. They also allege that the company could be compelled to "support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party."

Reacting to Pompeo's comments, a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement: "TikTok is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy here in the US. We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users. We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked."

Last week, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese mobile applications, including top social media platforms such as TikTok, Helo, and WeChat, to counter the threat posed by these applications to its “sovereignty and security".

TikTok is owned by Beijing-based startup ByteDance.

Crime / Shocker! 33-year-old Woman Buries Her Own Baby Alive In Kaduna (photo) by Meenatnigeria(f): 6:27pm On Jul 05, 2020
According to a report by Sun News, a 33-year-old woman identified as Hauwa on Saturday allegedly connived with her 35-year-old elder sister, Zainab, to remove her foetus and bury it in a shallow grave at People’s Club Hotel in Tudun Wada, Kaduna.

An investigation by Sun News revealed that both sisters who reside close to the hotel facility checked in Friday night after they paid N2,000 accommodation fee to execute their chilling plan.

Sources within the area say the young woman was well known though they could not ascertain the age of the pregnancy, noting that she must have carried out the dastardly act due to a paternity issue surrounding the pregnancy or due to family pressure.

‘”Hauwa is a well-known pregnant woman around here. She came around yesterday to book for accommodation. No one ever thought that she had such a thing in mind. What we don’t also know is whether she gave birth before daybreak or someone helps her removed the baby,’ a source who spoke in confidence stated.

‘This morning, someone who is not staff at the hotel sighted them from a distance when she and her sister were digging the spot where they buried the baby. It was unfortunate.’

An eyewitness, Bello Abdulmumin, who claimed to have seen them said: ‘I just came in and I saw two women around 11 am this morning with stick digging somewhere there (pointing to the area).

‘After they finished digging, they dropped something there and covered it with sand. I drew someone’s attention to it and we tried to check what was planted there.

‘The moment we saw blood, I then asked the other man to leave the spot and that was how we went to inform the police who came and arrested the two of them.

‘I know the two of them, Hauwa and Zainab, very well because they live around here. The elder sister Zainab should be around 35, while Auwa should be 33,’ the witness narrated.

When this correspondent visited the Angwan Sanusi Police Station at Tudun Wada where the case was reported, the two women were sighted with their hands cuffed.

A credible source suggested that the baby had died and it has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for forensic examination.

As at the time of this report, details on how the foetus was removed by the two sisters were sketchy, with the police spokesman promising to give an update on the case later in the day as he claimed to be on official assignment outside Kaduna town.

Health / Beware! Check Out 8 Diseases You Can Get From Kissing by Meenatnigeria(f): 1:09pm On Jul 05, 2020
Like many other people in the world, do you love a passionate kiss? The type that leaves you breathless and craving for more? The kisses that the fairytales preach, yes those that sweep you off your feet and transport you to cloud nine.

The world stops rotating during a good kiss and nothing else seems to matter at that moment. That is because when you share an incredible kiss with someone, there are certain feel-good hormones, such as dopamine, being released that will make you feel on top of the world and wanting to go back for more!

During that euphoric state, the last thing on your mind is the thought of any of the communicable diseases that may be transmitted while kissing. Although this is the farthest thing from your mind at that moment, it is imperative to be aware of how kissing may potentially spur on various health problems. That kiss which is seemingly just a blissful moment of intimacy may lead you towards the road of infection.

This article is not meant to scare you or make you anxious for every time you need to kiss a loved one. Kissing is no doubt one of the most loving ways to show affection but what many may not realise is that intimate kisses that involve exchanging saliva can often transfer illnesses.

According to HealthGrove, it used data from the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control to find eight diseases that are transmitted through saliva.

Keep reading to find out the diseases you can get through kissing.

Mononucleosis

Popularly called “the kissing disease” and it is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which thrives in fluids such as saliva and may be spread easily from an infected person’s saliva when kissing. It typically affects young adults and is highly contagious. Infection and related symptoms last from one to two months. Symptoms are very similar to those of the flu and include a fever, sore throat, fatigue, muscle weakness and swollen lymph glands. Symptoms are usually self-limiting and get better with time. There is no treatment for mononucleosis but staying hydrated, resting and taking medication often helps.

Cytomegalovirus

This disease spreads through saliva, as well as through blood, urine, semen and breast milk. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus in the herpes family. and like all herpes viruses, it remains dormant in the body for long periods. Symptoms can include fatigue, fever, muscle aches and, in more serious cases, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures and visual impairment.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is also known as periodontitis and gingivitis and although it is not spread through kissing, the bad bacteria that cause it can. To avoid gum disease, regular brushing and flossing can serve as a defense.

Herpes

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is the virus responsible for the unsightly blistering on the lips and around the mouth when one has an active oral herpes infection. These lesions are commonly called cold sores or fever blisters, and not everyone understands that cold sores and fever blisters are synonymous with oral herpes.

Once oral herpes is contracted, it stays with you forever. Oral herpes is transmitted through direct contact between an infected area and broken skin or a mucous membrane. Many people who are infected with oral herpes aren’t even aware that they have the infection, and may unknowingly pass it on to a partner while kissing. During an outbreak, symptoms usually last between 8-10 days on average and the cold sores heal on their own. If you want to prevent the spread of infection, you should abstain from kissing, or other sexual contacts, if you or your partner have visible sores.

Meningitis

Meningitis is a serious disease that causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. This disease can be spread from one person to another via respiratory secretions. A means by which the illness can be passed along to someone else is via the exchange of saliva while kissing. In 2017, there were over 1000 deaths in Nigeria during the meningitis outbreak. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, sensitivity to light and vomiting. This disease has no medication but staying healthy with a strong immune system helps to get the better of it.

Mumps

Mumps affects the salivary glands and causes them to swell. It usually spreads via airborne droplets from the nose or throat of an infected person. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite.

Rubella

Referred to as the German measles, rubella is caused by a virus transmitted through an infected person’s sneeze or cough. Symptoms include fever and rash and clear up in two to three days. The rubella vaccine can prevent this disease.

Influenza

Influenza is spread via droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. Most people recover on their own in less than two weeks.

Celebrities / Why Hushpuppi Won’t Be The Last Nigerian Fraudster by Meenatnigeria(f): 4:08pm On Jun 27, 2020
As the footage confirming the arrest of Hushpuppi storms the Internet, Nigeria’s reputation plummets a hundred feet down the abyss of fraudulence reconfirming Nigeria’s pole position as the world capital of swindlers.

If you can’t understand why PayPal stops Nigerian residents from receiving funds via their accounts, you can now see the clog in the wheel. If you think that Fiverr and other international platforms are unfair to Nigerians, Hushpuppi and his cohort have shown us the truth. The staggering list of alleged crimes against Hushpuppi and his gang — money laundering, cyber fraud, hacking, impersonation, scamming individuals, banking fraud, and identity theft worth about N168bn — shed more light to the scrutiny that awaits any sane Nigerian looking to conduct legal business on the Internet across international borders.

I am aware of the bold defenders of the gospel, according to Saint Hushpuppi, you are part of the problem. For Hushpuppi’s loyalists, life can be tough when your role model is having a mid-life crisis behind bars. If you are an ardent bootlicker for Hushpuppi or you have started a prayer vigil begging God to show him mercy, you are part of the problem. At least think of the victims, 1.93 million innocent people, that’s an equivalent of four countries put together — Iceland, Montenegro, Malta, and Suriname. Think of what their families had to go through because of one man’s greed.

Nigerian Millennials and the “Get-Rich” Scheme

This article is not about Hushpuppi. It’s about the average Nigerian millennial that believes in the “get-rich” scheme. When I binge on the “Explore” section of my Instagram account, I see a host of Nigerian millennials do the unthinkable — from name-calling to blind praises of micro-celebrities to mudslinging on pages of so-called superstars — you wonder how they have so much time to waste on frivolities.

A vast portion comprises of gullible minds with vitality and intelligence but desperate to accrue wealth through fraud. From jobless ladies recruiting their victims through salacious pictures and relentless twerking on Instagram to unemployed boys spraying dollars at expensive clubs to sharing photos with rented exotic cars, one thing is clear Nigerians love and believe in the overnight success mentality. They are always hunting for the next gold rush. In sharp contrast, hardworking people are labelled as stupid and dumb, but everyone throngs the wealthy to taste their largess even though the source of their wealth is unfounded. As social media pervades your space, the concept of micro-celebrity is a monster you must conquer.

Social Media and Micro-celebrities

Long before social media, influential media houses and exalted fourth estate monarchs religiously shaped our ideas and beliefs. Before the age of digital transformation, to win the attention of the media and the populace, you must be remarkably successful. Then, the camera was one of the world’s most powerful tools, you need to be in front of a lens in the New York Times’s studio or get featured on Forbes’s front page. The media meticulously stamped its influence on distinguished personalities that morphed into our heroes, champions, and celebrity crushes. And although the press cherrypicked its celebrities, our sanity was intact and respected. But with social media comes the democratization of the camera, which has plunged us into a pool of chaos.

Every time you dive into Facebook or Instagram, you feed on a well-served mixture of lies and truths. There are no standards to censor what makes it to our feeds. Are you surprised that fake news trends while fact-based news is deserted like a madman? No benchmarks to weigh the veracity of what we consume. Hence, the madness! Sadly, we no longer have the media; we are the media. We choose what trends, and we select our role models.

The blatant freedom of expression served as a guise for fraudsters to exploit gullible users either emotionally or financially. Welcome to a world where you no longer need Forbes’s microphone or CNN’s camera to become a celebrity. You can become a superstar even if you don’t have a job. All you need is a phone, a camera, a sweet mouth, and a social media network where you can create attractive personas with your “bodyguard of lies.” All you need is a cameo in one of Hushpuppi’s videos, and your social media visibility skyrockets.

Social media, like every other useful tool in life, can be abused and used for unethical purposes. Social media’s comparative metrics unintentionally serves as a perfect catalyst that fuels greed, jealousy and desperation. Social media is a jungle where people hunt for likes, shares, comments, and followers. To achieve this aim, many tell brazen lies and fall into the trap of ostentatious display of things that they can’t afford. It’s a rat race. Every time you jump on social media, learn to use your lens of skepticism. You don’t have to believe everything because it’s a collage of edited lives.

There is no hard-working person that will splurge the “Hushpuppi way.” I totally understand that some people love luxury items and have a legitimate income to support their lifestyle. Although such people love opulence, they share other things that point to how they make their wealth. That’s how you spot the difference. Hushpuppi’s arrest further validates the age-long cliché: “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, …”

Nigeria’s Hall of Fraudsters

Let’s bring this home with a look at Nigeria’s hall of fraudsters. Who was the generous head of state that sent Nigeria’s funds to foreign banks? Do you remember the Nigerian governor jailed in London for money laundering but was welcomed in Nigeria by melodious music and jubilant cheers? Do you know the young “Forbes Africa’s 30 under 30 entrepreneur” that recently pleaded guilty to an Internet fraud of about $11 million? Do you remember the lyrics of a popular Nigerian song that reeks of “Yahooze!”? I bet you know the answers to these questions. “Nigeria,” “fraud,” and “scammers” have been in the same sentence for a very long time. Are these not the people you invite to your extravagant parties? Are they not the ones you lobby for funds for your organization? You easily disown the thieves even though you share in their spoils and heap praises on them.

In a damning 2019 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report, 77 Nigerians were charged with cybercrime, money laundering and identity theft. Nigeria’s theatrics in the world of thievery and corruption did not start today, and it won’t end with Hushpuppi. Nigeria’s disposition to crime, corruption, and fraud shows that we are not ready to redeem our reputation. Nigerian anti-graft agencies lack the intelligence to combat cybercrime and our open admiration of fraudsters says it all. I doubt if we know how to catch our thieves (FBI is always doing the bust operation for us) or we just love the way they plunder other people (Westerners). We are quiet about the glaring corruption that happens in our front porches and market squares — from the pickpockets to the diversion of public funds — but we are quick to tell the rest of the world not to see Nigerians are fraudsters. It’s a lame statement, perhaps a quick fix we run to, so we don’t have to think of addressing the corruption in the system. How can the rest of the world trust us when we celebrate our fraudsters with cheers and awards?
