Information Minister Lai Mohammed, who stated this yesterday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, added that IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s belligerent attitude and the violence the group employed could not be overlooked by any government. The Federal Government spoke yesterday of an international dimension to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) crisis. It accused the United Kingdom of doing very little about its complaint that Biafra Radio was broadcasting from its territory. Besides, said the government, the bulk of IPOB’s funding from its diaspora supporters is sent through France. Information Minister Lai Mohammed, who stated this yesterday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, added that IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s belligerent attitude and the violence the group employed could not be overlooked by any government. The minister said: “Let me tell you, the financial headquarters is in France, we know, but you see, can you as a government stop sending money to your parents? You have to block the sources of finance that is what I said recently. “It is incontrovertible that some people in the diaspora contribute money to IPOB. We know this as a fact. Again, there are a few knotty diplomatic issues which you need to skip. For instance, who does not know that the IPOB internal radio is located in London? We know the diplomatic moves we have been taking and approaching the UK, all the damage it has done; but they don’t see it that way. For them, it is about freedom of expression. “If we have a person in Nigeria openly soliciting arms to come and fight the UK, what would you think of it. Would you consider that freedom of expression? And this is a country that also has had a history; what did the Irish Republican Army (IRA) do to be labeled a terrorist organization saharareporters.com/2017/09/21/nigerian-government-slams-france-uk-roles-ipob-crisis |
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High
Court Abuja, on September 20, dismissed an
application brought by a former Minister of
Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-
Madueke, seeking to be joined as a
defendant in the trial of Jide Omokore, and
also struck out the eighth count in which
her name was listed.
Omokore, chairman, Atlantic Energy Brass
Development and Atlantic Energy Drilling
Concept, is facing a nine-count charge along
with Victor Briggs, a former Managing
Director, National Petroleum Development
Company; Abiye Membere, a former Group
Executive Director, Exploration and
Production at the NNPC, and David Mbanefo,
a former Manager, Planning and Commercial
at NNPC, for a $1.6 billion fraud.
Counsel for Diezani, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN,
had on September 18 filed the application,
based on the fact that her name was listed
in the eighth count, and sought for
amendment of the charge, to include her as
the seventh defendant, “in order to give her
the opportunity to defend herself”.
In the said application, Diezani also
requested that the court direct the Attorney
General of the Federation to facilitate her
appearance in court on the next adjourned
date in October 2017.
Counsel for the EFCC, M.S. Abubakar, in an
18-paragraph counter-affidavit, however,
vehemently opposed the application,
arguing that, “the applicant realized she
was being investigated, and she absconded
abroad and sometimes in March this year
operatives were in London, but her lawyers
refused to allow the operatives interview
her”.
He added that: “My lord, this present
application is a plot by the applicant to
enable her escape prosecution in London,
also to enable her come to Nigeria and
scuttle the ongoing case which has already
gotten to an advanced stage.”
After hearing arguments, Justice Dimgba,
declined to grant the application, and
instead, struck out the eighth count in
which Diezani’s name appeared.
The trial of Omokore and his co-defendants
continues on October 5. |

The EFCC, it was learnt, had written to the ban However, it was learnt that the Akwa Ibom State Government had dragged the commission before the court, challenging its right to investigate state affairs. A detective at the commission said, “Among several allegations that are already in the public domain, the commission has made some progress in investigating the circumstances in which Apkabio, in 2013, paid N566, 883,728.66; N441,808,081.90; and N392, 631,943.37 as gifts to a new generation bank.” It was learnt that the state government had ignored seven requests from the EFCC, asking for the release of officials of the government for interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation into the activities of Akpabio, who is now the Senate Minority Leader. saharareporters.com/2017/09/21/akwa-ibom-government-blocks-attempt-efcc-probe-senator-akpabios-n14bn-bank-gift |

Teams in England's top flight have elected to stop the purchase of players before the next campaign begins in a bid to stop transfers unsettling stars Premier League clubs have voted to close the next summer transfer window before the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Teams have been plagued with uncertainty this year as they have fought to keep hold of star players, who have invariably become unsettled due to their futures being unknown. All 5 PL teams to win in CL at 9/1 In particular, sagas over Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho — two of the division's star players — dragged on until late in the window. Consequently, in a bid to avoid this disruption, teams have elected to shut the next summer transfer window at 17:00 BST on the Thursday before the campaign begins. Fourteen clubs were in favour of the change, with five voting against it and one team abstaining. The decision will not impact the length of the window, simply meaning that the registration period in England will open earlier than it currently does. If other European leagues continue to allow the movement of players until August 31, they will still be able to buy players from the English top flight but will not be able to sell their stars to Premier League clubs. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been one of the biggest advocates for a change in the current system , arguing as recently as Tuesday: "The ideal situation would be to have a transfer period that is closed 48 hours before the first game of the championship and to close it completely until after the season. "I believe that we have to bring some decency. We all complain today that it has become too much a business, but we can do something about it. We have that responsibility in the game.” WHEN WILL PREMIER LEAGUE TRANSFER WINDOW OPEN IN 2018? As there is no date yet set for the beginning of the 2018-19 season, it is unclear exactly when the window will be opened in England. Normally, the second weekend of August would be the logical start to the campaign, though that changes with Russia 2018. However, using the precedent of the 2014 World Cup, after which the season began on August 16, the next campaign may well start on the weekend of Saturday, August 18. As the summer transfer period lasts for 12 weeks, that would mean the window will open on May 26, a fortnight after the current season ends and on the day of the Champions League final. m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/4102/transfer-zone/2017/09/07/38410572/premier-league-transfer-window-to-close-before-season-starts |

Denying that it is investigating Justices
Onnoghen and Kafarati, the commission
recalled that when the Chief Justice was
being considered for his present position,
the Commission received some petitions
against him, but that they were investigated
and then discarded, having been found to
be without merit.
The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) today denied a
story in The Punch, one of Nigeria’s most
authoritative and respected journals, that it
is investigating several high-profile
Nigerians, including the Chief Justice
(CJN), Walter Onnoghen.
Others named by the newspaper include
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Minister for
Finance & Coordinating Minister of the
Economy; the Minister of Solid Minerals
Development and former Ekiti State
Governor, Kayode Fayemi; his successor as
governor, Ayodele Fayose; Justice
Abdu Kafarati of the Federal High
Court., Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello,
and his predecessor, Captain Idris
Wada; former
governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Lu
(Edo), Jonah Jang (Plateau)
and Ali Modu Sherriff (Borno), and former
First Lady Patience Jonathan.
Former Ministers under
President Goodluck Jonathan on the list,
according to The Punch, include
Mohammed Adoke, Bala Mohammed,
Stella Oduah, Godsday Orubebe. Prominent
on it also is the immediate past Minister of
Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-
Madueke, along with her husband,
Rear Admiral Alison Madueke (Rtd.).
The Punch story was written by
seven reporters, which suggests the
organization spent a lot of resources on its
investigation, and on poring over the list.
According to the story, the sources of
the information against each of the persons
on the list are listed against them, and
include intelligence, whistle-blowers and
petitions from government agencies and
private citizens.
The Punch, saying the list was seen by one
of its correspondents courtesy of an EFCC
source on Monday, also noted that the
commission sent it to the Attorney General
of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr.
Abubakar Malami at his request.
In its response, the EFCC categorically
denied that the report emanated from
it, dismissing the allusion to “an EFCC
source” as “diversionary and mischievous.”
According to the statement, cases under
investigation that it
communicates to the AGF are classified
information. To that end, it described
as “troubling” that such a list could have
been leaked to the media, adding that
the mastermind aimed at creating
disaffection between the commission and,
particularly, the judiciary.
Denying that it is investigating
Justices Onnoghen and Kafarati, the
commission recalled that when the Chief
Justice was being considered for his
present position, the Commission received
some petitions against him, but that they
were investigated and then discarded,
having been found to be without merit.
“Indeed, much damage has been done to
the Commission’s investigation activities by
this leak especially as some of the cases
mentioned are still at preliminary stages of
investigation,” the EFCC concluded.

Initial reports had suspected lassa fever, but medics told Dr. Saka Audu, Commissioner for Health, who visited the affected areas on Thursday, that it was a strange disease that was unknown.A strange disease, whose symptoms include diarrhea, bloodstained vomiting and high fever has killed 50 people at Okunran, Okoloke and Isanlu-Esa villages in Yagba West Local Government of Kogi. Initial reports had suspected lassa fever, but medics told Dr. Saka Audu, Commissioner for Health, who visited the affected areas on Thursday, that it was a strange disease that was unknown. “We initially suspected Lassa Fever after getting some misleading reports about people bleeding around, so we made a diagnosis for viral haemorrhagic fever (lassa fever), but the result was negative,” Dr. Jannette Hathorn, a Consultant at ECWA Hospital, Egbe told Audu. She said that the first case was that of a child of two and half years, who died 12 hours after he was brought to the hospital. “We are sure it is not lassa fever; but our concern is that we do not know exactly what is happening. We have not arrived at a definitive diagnosis. “Two adult patients were also brought here; one showed symptoms of ulcer-viral illness, but there was no bleeding component of any haemorrhagic symptom. “We isolated them and both of them were treated for malaria. When they started improving, we let them go. “Another parent brought a child to the hospital and pleaded for help. He said that 50 people had died in their village with similar symptoms of bloodstained vomiting, diarrhea and fever. “When the child died, we called the World Health Organisation (WHO).
