Hence, you prove my point.

It is a common knowledge that Netflix accepts a lot of rubbish shows and movies. As long as it is popular or lots of people will view it.

A good example is "Dont mess with the Zohan". A nonsense film that all the critics hated. Even normal reviewers on imdb hated it. It made twice its budget.

Or even take reality tv shows that are fake but draw in millions of viewers.

The common man is dumb and will watch dumb tv. Simple. I could have inserted an anti religion argument here to buttress my point....but knowing you..
The common man is not dumb, need i remind you, that there's more to life than movies.

A time shall come when you yourself would barely be seeing movies, and the very few times you'd indulge yourself into seeing one, you'd be doing so for entertainment or seeing sake.

Many useless films are profitable. Wedding Party, 90% of Adam Sandler movies
Useless & profitable..Lol, i see the oxymoron there.
But can something be useless & profitable at the same time?

One mans meat is another's poison. Need i remind you that not everybody sees movies the same way we(Arm Chair Critics) do. Most folks, a staggering 70% see movies for the entertainment value(as long as the film is sweet according to them, they are good) & not for the plot, cinematography etc.

Money Heist for instance if i were to critically rate seasons 3 & 4, i wouldn't give it more than a 6/10.

There is no hope. Nollywood is not trying abeg. Even with a hostile environment, one can still do great things.

When I was young, i remember the quality of the plot and script of Things Fall Apart. Granted, it had a source material from the book but then..

Or just look at indie movies in America. With little budgets, they create cheap movies that mostly focus on the dramatic plot.

Where are the Nigerian short movies on youtube? If we can copy short comedy videos (cough* brother shaggy) why can't we also do short movies in youtube that wont even cost much?

The only thing Nollywood has is good actors. I am yet to see a good plot in Nigerian films. Even our romantic films lack good storylines. It is either predictable or copied from a Hollywood film.

I know part of the problem is from.the Nigerin government and nigerian environment but still...
There's hope. Ask me how? Alright, just like ingeniousLeez said, most of our movies are purchased by or are streaming on Netflix. I count 12 of em'
Lionheart
The bling lagosians
Moms at war
King of boys
Up north
Merry men
New money
Mokalik
Tatu
93 days
The wedding party 2
Living in bondage: breaking free.

If the contents of these Flicks were that bad, do you think Netflix would have purchased em'.

Ok here's the deal, Netflix purchasing these movies gives a sort of promotional advantage to the producers of the above flicks. If Genevieve Nnaji comes up tomorrow with a movie idea, do you think it'll be difficult for her to find investors or fund?

Our contents have improved presently, that's why Netflix saw it as financially rewarding purchasing our movies. And as long as our content keeps improving, Netflix would always be willing to buy or showcase our content on their platform, thus, more producers are added unto the list, and as such, investors would see the industry as viable & will be willing to invest in the already made producers, this would in turn trigger upcoming producers to work their ass off so as to be on the list, invariably, the growth of the industry becomes exponential.

So therefore, there's hope.

It's easy to dismiss Nollywood for their lack of creativity or imagination.

As someone who has been there and done that, please clap for those guys.
You have spoken well, that was exactly were i was headed in my write-up before network logged me out.

we all need to appreciate those guy's cause it ain't easy, though constructive criticism is always a good thing. With the way the industry is headed presently, there is hope & Gods grace we'd get there eventually, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step.

How does one get concepts for films? Are you aware that Nollywood has not produced one single high concept film? Something like inception, transcendence, in time etc

Even if one doesnt go to acting schools, there are still coaches from acting schools that assist these big time actors in certain aspects of acting. For instance, a romance actor needs to do a fight scene- a movie choreographer would coach him.

Great concepts can only come from philosophy. Just think about how someone came up with the idea of inception as a movie. If one is not exposed to art, logic and film history, it is unlikely that the persons mind will be able to develop a high concept movie script.
Don't you think mentioning movies like inception, transcendence & in time is kinda way too much. Poking into the SciFi Genre is a no no for me, cause taking lots of factors into consideration, we may never get there.

Every industry has what they are good at. Hollywood is an all rounder, Bollywood excells best with Romance, Comedy, Rom-Com & Drama, and the industry has been churning out movies with exquisite contents from these genres. Nollywood, is mostly good/ ok/ trying when it comes to Comedy, Romance & Rom-Com & Sometimes Drama. Have you see a movie with John Okafor, Charles inoje, or Charles Awurum, these guys would give some American comedy actors a run for their money.

So, these genres that we are good at, we can start from there. Creative writers can come up with concepts as good as ;Before Sunshine, when Harry met Sally, Mr Bean Holiday, Booksmart, Stepbrothers, Dumb & Dumber etc. Let's start from there first & perfect these genres we are a lil bit good at, then as time goes on, we can branch into other genres.

Trust me we Nigerians are very creative, but the situation or condition of the country is enough to eliminate any form of creativity one has. Are you trying to tell me that in all your years of seeing movies, you can't come up with & pen down a concept worthy of the big screens. Many of us work from 9-5 or even more, now tell me how easy it is for someone like that to pen down something creative, then, how about those in schools with atleast 15 courses to study a semester & destiny killing lectures to put up with daily.

Bro the last 9ja movie I saw at the cinema had me in tears because of my wasted funds....Netflix is here so there is a wider global reach now, so the producers should take a leap and do something good... I am not even calling for CGI and VFX....indie movies without VFX but with proper story line and top notch acting dey always bang.
I also pointed out the bolded in my reply to jeromeblack, though it wasn't meant for him.

it's been far too long for a sequel bro. They could have utilize the props for other projects and dead this ritual narrative.
Exactly what i said, the movie wasn't really necessary. Was it a sequel? I thought this one was meant to be part 3 as Parts 1 & 2 were released in 92 & 93 respectively.
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by mekaprime2:
Born2Freak:
Stop the village man sentiment. There is no hope for Nigerian movie industry.

Unless we invest in theatres, film and acting schools and video technology (video editing, graphic design, sound engineering etc)
The life wire of every movie is the concept, & secondly the execution. To some extent, the industry is getting those 2 figured out, that's the hope.
You talk about acting schools, how many of em' popular Hollywood actors went to acting schools? Christian Bale, Jaoquin Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp etc never went to acting school, yet they turned out perfectly.

Yeah, video technology needs to be improved upon.

And as for those clamoring for opening of cinemas, opening cinemas all over the country & feeding these movies to em' is not really advisable, yes it'd curb piracy, but the big question is do we really have the content to showcase in this cinemas? How many folks do you think would go to the cinema to see a ritual orientated movie? A movie were by mere seeing the advert, i already know what happens to kanayo o kanayo, a movie i can predict perfectly. Fellas, we are looking at lots of box office bombs.

The above are not the things we should be bothered with right now. Let's first of all, improve on our concept, concept & execution/delivery, and every other thing would come eventually fall in place.

So, there's hope for the industry if we can work on the above.

What else if not RITUAL?

How do you expect a sequel to Living In Bondage to be? Romance? Kung-fu?

Did you ever REALLY watch the original?

cc: Oyaskii
I said it's been donkey years i saw the original.

Am not debating the genre here, what am saying is that there are better ways to tell a story. It wasn't really a sequel, the movie was a Trilogy, and if i may ask was that movie really necessary in this time of ours. We need new content in industry, contents that promotes us as a people, content which portray us in the right light not something that has be used & overused or something that showcases us in the dark light.

Seriously we have gone past that, blood ritual for money isn't something we should be doing presently, it's an over-flogged concept already.

Living in Bondage:Breaking Free (2019): 4/10. I tried to indulge my self with this flick after years of nollywood neglect and I was disappointed to say the least. This was uncalled for and no where near the quality of the first part and to think this was a century ahead of the later. The story was so bland and incoherent, and the acting was medicore especially from the lead female, how are you choosing Muna as a lead actress in what was suppose to be the biggest movie from nollywood in recent times (guessing this is her first movie, If not she can't act to save her life) and how is this ritual narrative still a plot in nollywood this era when they are so much more to make movies about.

Nollywood is still at "we don try small small" stage for far too long.. When are we actually going to try big and make proper movies? Pathetic!
It had ritual narrative? i thought we had gone past that in the industry. That's like going back to the Stone ages. It's been donkey years i saw the first movie, I'd probably see it before this new one.

Isoken...6/10
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Industry:Nollywood

Isoken graces us with that nostalgia of being black & African. The African culture, dressing, colours, music, wedding rites etc were well dramatized, so much so, that you just had to be proud of your black pigmentation.

Though not entirely original, cause I've seen similar concept somewhere, but it sure did pull it off plot wise, all thanks to creative copying. Excellent acting from the cast, nice cinematography & spot on directing.

The predictability was actually a cog in the wheel of progress, of what would have been a perfect Nollywood flick.

With flicks like this, there's really hope for our industry.

Diary Of A Pregnant Woman...5.6/10
Genre: Comedy
Industry:Nollywood

Nice concept, our movies seem to be getting good at this. It something you can or will later relate to in life.

Ruth Kadiri totally killed this one, she had me in stitches & like WTF with the interpretation of her role most of the time. em' other cast were really bad, she Ruth, was the focal point of the movie & she sure pulled it off.

Camera lighting was kinda poor, editing was horribly done, you get to see the camera itself a few times, dialogue asides Ruth's was cheesey.

All in all it was still kinda ok & very watchable.
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by mekaprime2:
The Royal Hibiscus Hotel...5.8/10
Genre: Romance, Comedy.
Industry:Nollywood

Loved the concept, it was quite an original one. Acting wasn't that really impressive, the whites in the movie were more terrible actors than us. Cinematography was ok, nothing fancy, soundtracks were dope, every single one of em', the choice of Johnny Drilles' songs were a good one.

One thing I noticed about Nollywood movies is that conflict resolution of entire movies are done abruptly. Like resolving the climax of a whole movie in a space of just 30sec or less.

Secondly is the predictability. 98% of our movies are predictable & devoid of any form of twist or suspense.

These are the few of the many flaws our dear script writers & directors have to look into & work on. Generally our content has improved, our movies doesn't center on rituals, & a host of barbaric practice anymore, hopefully some day we'd get there.

The Visit....5.5/10
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Industry:Nollywood

Nse Ikpe Etim is one Nollywood actress i hold in high esteem. She's the proverbial one eyed king in the country of the blind as regards this flick.

Plot was kinda ok, so was the concept, acting asides Etims' was kinda bad, & the dialogues were cheesy.

All in all, it wasn't bad, neither was good, though it's watchable.

Django unchained(2012)... Rewatch
Genre: Drama, Western

Plot was meticulously written, acting was brilliant, all thanks to perfect ensemble of cast, they all killed their respective roles.

Music score was perfect, the 100 black coffins by Rick Ross which was sung at Jamie's horsing entrance scene into the plantation was fvcking lit. Directing was solid & cinematography was awe-inspiring.

Being Tarantino's first entrance into the western genre, I'd say he executed it perfectly without a snag, a big hats off to him.

Cast Away

To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds and grow out his hair for his time spent on the deserted island.

The movie wasn't perfect so to speak, it had it's flaws, but the most important thing was that it was very relatable to this pandemic we are all faced with.

I kinda know why you've been avoiding pandemic movies. Somehow, you don't want all that's currently going on to be real & movies like Contagion kinda shows you the harsh reality of what may come, if things are left unchecked, and believe you me, it's super scary.
