Okay why is windows phone special is the OP's question right? Lemme try and give you an answer. Please don't bash me.
1. The OS is smooth, new and well designed.
2. The Hardware is extremely optimized for the OS so that your experience isn't hampered.
3. Apps are well optimised before published. This results in better app performance.
4. Easy to use and get used to.
5. It offers value for money.
6. It is amazing if you use xbox live alot

Whats not so special?
1. You would need lots of Data. There is no easy way to get your apps without hitting the store.
2. Not customizable to taste.
I tried as much as not to mention any OS here. Hope OP is satisfied cos' i'm tired of hitting refresh

With my WP8.1, it has been bliss so far. The upcoming unification of of all windows platform with Windows 10 will be a game changer . . . .

Actually the WP devices I used were Win8..
Currently using a BB10

Data compression, security, plus some other things got me to like WP .... Aside that , it's unique and classy compare to all dose android phones being made by every d.ck nd harry company dese days.

@Bolded My Blackberry Offers that...
When it comes to design, WP z Unique but so z BB..
Android phones normally have more features than WP..
That's why I'm yet to find something thrilling about the phone that would make me choose it as a long term phone

Recently, I thought of getting the lumia 1020, but I'm scared I would dump it like others..

actually if you have zune desktop software, you can do that. And if you have downloaded the wp .xap file to your pc, you can easily copy it to several wp devices.

Well..I can't use it as my only phone cos truly, it'd be too boring but it's not as boring as you make it sound. Besides, my android bores me sometimes, I'd just be looking at it and and thinking "what should I do next. . ." In the end, it all comes down to individual preference and what you really do with it
