Politics / Joel Ikenya Joins APC, Dumps PDP by metromediaboss: 1:55pm On Jan 23, 2017
Sen. Joel Ikenya, the immediate past Minister of Labour and Productivity, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ikenya hails from Taraba and served in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He told newsmen on Monday in Jalingo that his defection was informed by the numerous achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari- led administration.
He urged Nigerians especially those from the North-East, to key into the policies and programmes of the President for the socio-economic development of the country.

“My reasons for decamping from the PDP to pitched tent with the ruling party are based on the many achievements the president have recorded within his first one year in office.

“The success he achieved in restoring peace to the troublesome North-East zone alone is something we cannot shy away from no matter our political party differences.

“Buhari’s fight against corrupt practices is also one of the major factors that motivated me to dump my former political party to the ruling APC,” Ikenya said.

The former minister pledged the `unflinching support’ of his and his supporters to the President to enable him (Buhari) lead the nation to greater heights.

“My supporters and I will support Mr President because a close look at his appointments will show you that no region benefited from his appointments like the North-East.

“I want to use this platform to call on citizens from the northeast region to put aside sentiments and support the president in reciprocity for all the good things he has done for us,” he said.

Crime / Turkish College: Kidnappers Fail To Release Victims After Receiving Ransom by metromediaboss: 1:44pm On Jan 23, 2017
The kidnappers who stormed Nigerian Turkish International College and made away with 3 pupils and 5 staff have failed to release the victims even after collecting 10 million Naira ransom.

The kidnappers reportedly promised to release their victims on Friday night after their relatives dropped off the ransom at the agreed spot. However, after the ransom was dropped, the kidnappers went back on their promise, accusing the relatives of getting security operatives involved.

It was gathered that on Friday night, relatives of those kidnapped were directed by the kidnappers to go to Ogun State, some others were directed to Ondo state and there were those asked to go to Agboju in Lagos state to reunite with their loved ones and were warned not to receive phone calls while at the venue. After the unsuccessful attempt at recovery on Friday, the kidnappers promised to release their victims on Saturday night, however, they failed on their promise again.

One of the relatives, who asked not to be named, said that her family paid N5 million to the kidnappers.

“What else do they want us to do? We paid N5 million and yet they have refused to release my little girl. This is the ninth day and the longest of all such incidents in schools ever witnessed. Is this a repeat of Chibok girls abduction?” The woman said.

“The most annoying part is that the Ogun State government seems to be adamant over this. Apart from the day the Deputy Governor visited the school and assured us that they would be released, nothing has been heard from the government. One would have expected that such kidnap in a foreign school should be given the needed attention, so as to redeem our image internationally, but no! They have left us to our fate because it is not their children that are involved,” she continued.

“The police keep assuring us that they would release them. How long do they want us to wait, for eternity?”

Distraught relatives of the victims have pleaded with police to not get involved so as not to anger the kidnappers because all they want is to have their loved ones back.

The spokesman for Ogun command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), in a statement revealed that security forces were closing in on the kidnappers.

“We are very optimistic. We believe that we would rescue the girls soon. It is not true that we have not been talking with the parents. How can we abandon them? It will be unfair for any parent to say so because it is far from the truth. The only thing is that we can not reveal the strategy we are taking because that may jeopardise our efforts,” he said.

Crime / Kidnappers Of Turkish School Students & Staff Reject N7.2m Ransom by metromediaboss: 10:54am On Jan 21, 2017
Kidnappers of Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NTIC), Ogun State have rejected a N7.25 million ransom parents raised.

Armed men had on January 13, stormed the school premises at about 9.30PM and held hostage three female supervisors, a female cook, a female teacher (Turkish), three students, and two others that were in the school for coaching for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The school said that its security noticed some movement on the CCTV camera at the girls’ section and promptly deployed security personnel and alerted the relevant security agencies in the area.

The management added that the armed invaders opened fire on the security staff and managed to escape with the hostages.

The kidnappers had earlier demanded N100 million for each of the students, and N300 million each for the Turkish nationals.

After the kidnap, parents withdrew their children from the school, and it was shut down.

Reports say the kidnappers had reduced the amount earlier this week, but the parents still couldn’t afford it.

“The parents met yesterday at Ikeja. They were able to gathered N7.250m. They got in touch with the kidnappers, but the men said the money was too small. They asked them to go and add more to the money, if they wanted their kids to be released,”

The Inspector- General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) has arrested two suspects – Philip Joel Kakadu (aka General Kakadu), 29, a native of Egbema Kingdom, Warri North Local Government Area and Romeo Council, 40, (aka Raw).

Kakadu confessed to the police that the abduction was, a ‘Joint Operation,’ among three different gangs of kidnappers.

He told police that he contributed five men and planned the abduction, but didn’t go with them.

Kakadu was arrested after four years on Police Wanted List for bank robbery, pipeline vandalism and kidnapping.

He was the unseen face, but known name in police circles, behind the popular Agbara, Festac, Lekki and Ikorodu bank robberies.

Kakadu and his men were known for blowing up banks’ doors and vaults with dynamites. It was, however, based on his confessions, that the IRT operatives have spread into states in South-South and South-West.

The report stated that more than 16 suspects, had been arrested earlier, including women, but thorough investigations by the IRT operatives, whittled down the number.

Presently, five confirmed suspects, including a lady, are among the suspects in police custody.

On the January 19th, 2017, a one million man march in support of President Buhari’s administration was staged

The march which started at the Berger roundabout, culminated at the Ascon petrol station in Wuse, Abuja

The marchers carried various placards in support of President Buhari.

However, the protest was not well attended as very few Nigerians gathered to support the President. Could this mean Nigerians have gradually lost faith in PMB?

www.metronaija.com snooped around on the social media and read comments such as this Nigerians are so foolish no wonder they will continue to suffer and even die in hunger and poverty. How can any one sane come out to support a rudderless, inept president with his gang of clowns as ministers and advisers. Wonders they say can never end

Another comment also read One million what. I can only see 69 persons. Godtakeover lol 1million them nor even reach 100 said another.

Politics / EFCC Arraigns Katsina Permanent Secretary For N2.5m Fertiliser Contract Scam by metromediaboss: 9:12am On Jan 04, 2017
He pleaded not guilty, according to a statement issued by the Spokesman of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, in Abuja.

The offence, according to the prosecution, is contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

Counsel to the EFCC, Mr Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, told the court that the accused perpetrated the crime through a fertiliser contract scam while attached to the deputy governor’s office.

He was said to have obtained the N2.5 million from an unidentified complainant under the pretext that it was required for bidding documents that would enable the office to award the contract to the complainant.

Following Saulawa’s plea, the prosecution counsel asked the court for a trial date in addition to the accused person’s remand in prison custody.

However, the defense counsel, Bashir Mohammed, prayed the court to admit his client to bail pending the determination of the case.

But Hanafi opposed the application on the grounds that the accused person would likely jump bail having violated the terms of an administrative bail earlier granted him by the commission.

Justice Tukur remanded the accused person in prison custody and adjourned the matter to Jan. 6, for ruling on the bail application and commencement of trial.(NAN)

Religion / 'kicc's Pastor Ashimolowo Didn't Lose $5m To MMM by metromediaboss: 1:06pm On Jan 01, 2017
The Kingsway International Christian Centre, KICC has reacted to a recent report in which its Senior Pastor, Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo was alleged to have lost $5 million in a ‘Ponzi Scheme’.

In a statement by two top ranking officers of the church, Messrs Dipo Oluyomi, Chief Executive Officer and James McGlashan, Chief Operating Officer, the church stated that Ashimolowo did not lose N5 million to Ponzi.

It described the article as sensational and deliberately fallacious, totally misleading, libelous and one that has caused damage to Ashimolowo’s reputation as a consequence.

According to them, Ashimolowo did not make the decision to invest and has never been a trustee of KICC.

“As you are aware from the Charities Commission’s report that the decision to invest was solely that of the U.K trustees without any involvement of Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo.

“Importantly as the report states, it is the trustees who have the responsibility for investing charity funds and not Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo.

“The investment referred to were made by former trustees on behalf of the Charity over seven and a half years ago. They believed they were acting in the best interest of the Charity and they did not and have not benefited personally .Their actions were totally independent and were not influenced in any way by Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo.”

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Saturday pledged to intervene in the nation's aviation sector, which has suffered major setbacks, with the purported non-calibration of all 30 Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and VHF Omnidirectional Ranges (VHFs) that are operational in the country.

In his response to a social media user, Adamu Taiwo Haruna, who tweeted at the Senate President’s @BukolaSaraki handle saying “SP @bukolasaraki all 30 Instrument Landing Systems & VORs in Nigeria are all out of calibration. This is a serious safety issue Sir,” Saraki responded that he would personally take up the issues with the aviation minister, SenayorHadi Sirika and heads of other agencies concerned.

“Thank you for the info[mation],” the Senate President responded via his personal handle, “Unfortunately the Chair Senate Aviation Committee, Sen Aliero is away but I will personally look into it right away.”

When pressed further by the user, who stated that the failure of the ILS and VORs in the aviation sector could lead to air crashes, the Senate President assured the online community that he would reach out to the Minister in-charge of the Aviation sector, in order to have him explain the purported failures in the system.

“I will reach out to the Minister and have him explain why this is so,” he said, “Be rest assured that I am on top of it.”

ILS's are Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), while VORs are VHF Omnidirectional Ranges. ILSs enable aircraft to land when pilots are unable to establish visual contact with the runway, while VORs help aircraft to stay on course during flights by receiving radio signals transmitted by a network of fixed ground radio beacons.

Twitter users who weighed in commended the Senate President’s response to the issue, with one social media user, @OlufemiAwoyemi, describing the Senate President’s responsiveness to issues as “Governance 101.”

In the past decade, Nigeria has suffered major aviation disasters, which have been caused by the negligence of the aviation authorities, and lapses by airlines that have led to fatal crashes
