Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule on Thursday visited Igbonla Senior and Junior Model College in the suburb of Epe where four students and two teachers were kidnapped by a gang of suspected Ijaw militants, just as she assured that government would work assiduously to ensure prompt rescue of the victims.

The kidnappers, numbering about seven, had invaded the school premises at about 8am when students were having a special session at the hall and shut sporadically into the air before kidnapping the victims, which included a vice principal and head teacher.

Adebule, who was accompanied by top government functionaries and head of security agencies to the school, condemned the act, but pleaded with parents and families of the victims to cooperate with government and security agencies in ensuring prompt rescue of the victims.

While addressing hundreds of parents who had come to the school to remove their children, the Deputy Governor said such would not help the situation as panicking would further compound the situation.

She said: "It is true that in the last 29 years that this school was established, we have never experienced such a thing like this, but now that it has happened and it is confronting us, we must come together to find a lasting solution to it. We, as government, parents, the school and security agencies, must remain united to solve this problem.

"I know you are angry, I know you are worried and I know you are agitated, but we must look for solution. But I plead for the understanding of parents in this matter. I know how traumatic it could be, I know how emotional the issue we are discussing could be, but the best we can do is to handle it with care and with utmost wisdom that God can give us.

"It is God who secures, it is God who protect and even in other climes where you have everything, you still have this type of incursion once in a while, but what we should be talking about is how can we collectively solve this problem," the Deputy Governor said.

She assured that the State Government would do everything humanly possible to ensure the rescue of the victims, assuring that a team of security operatives would stay behind in the school to secure the students and teachers.

She also revealed that all security agencies including the Police, Air Force, Navy, the Army and others have been fully mobilized to ensure rescue of the victims, just as she expressed confidence in the success of the ongoing rescue operation.

On his part, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni assured the parents and families of the victims that the rescue operation already launched would be the shortest in the history of the Command.

While soliciting for the support of the parents, Owoseni said security agencies were already in custody of useful leads, adding that there was a strong hope of rescuing the victims.

"All I just want to say for now is that you have to work with us. What we also need from you is your prayers. We will seek your understanding and for now, I will not reveal much because as we speak, there are agents of the kidnappers here and they will reveal whatever we say here to them.

"We have a government in Lagos State that is ready to go all out and I can assure you that this will be the shortest rescue operation that we will carry out. We will do everything we need to do to secure the release of the victims," the CP said.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday congratulated the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his victory at the just concluded gubernatorial election, saying that the people of the State have made the right choice.

Obaseki, who was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), defeated his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) with 319,483 votes to 253,173 votes.

Governor Ambode, in a congratulatory message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said the development was not just a victory for democracy but the people who he said would experience continuity in terms of dividends of democracy.

The Governor, who was the Chairman, APC Campaign Council for the election, said the people of Edo have voted for continuity of people-friendly policies and programmes, and urged all the relevant stakeholders in the affairs of the State to accept the verdict of the people and work with Obaseki to move the State forward.

"Like I said during the grand rally of our great party - APC, at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin some few weeks back, Edo State, being the heartbeat of the South-South region, has all it takes to become another Lagos, and the decision of the people to speak with their votes in support of Obaseki is a signpost of their readiness for greatness and a testament to the monumental successes recorded in the last seven and half years by the incumbent Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

"We are enjoying the dividends of democracy in Lagos today because of the decision of the people to vote for continuity of good governance and I am glad that the people of Edo have also toed that path and the result will definitely translate to improved social services and welfare of the people," Governor Ambode said.

The Governor said judging by the antecedents of Obaseki, he was certain that Edo State is set for transformation and consolidation of the achievements of the outgoing administration in the State.

According to him, "Governor Oshiomhole has laid the right foundation for progressive governance. He has been responsive, progressive and totally committed to the needs of the people. With the decision to vote Mr Obaseki who is equally people-friendly, reliable, trustworthy, and has the fear of God, the people have made the right choice and I can only urge them to continue to support him to deliver on the campaign promises.

"The election has been deservedly won. The good people of Edo have chosen quality continuity over irreverent postulations. I have no doubt in my mind that the Governor-elect will continue with the good works of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, call for unity and take Edo to greater heights,” Governor Ambode said.

He also congratulated the people of Edo State for comporting themselves peacefully throughout the period of the election, while urging those aggrieved with the result to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters rather than resort to self help.

The Benue State joint security task force has shot and killed two suspected criminals said to be members of the gang of a wanted notorious gangster, Mr Terwase Akwaza, also known as Ghana in a joint operation earlier in the day.

Briefing newsmen at the state police headquarters in Makurdi, Police Commissioner, Mr Bashir Makama, stated that those shot dead while trying to escape arrest were Atondo Ibya and David Nyior. Three others, John Tsehe with two brothers, Sonter and Aondoaseer Swende, were arrested.

“It is an ongoing joint security operation, as you can see the Director of state security is here, the commanding officer of 72 special forces battalion and other security agencies are all here”, he stated. “This is a continuation of the search and onslaught on criminals in their hideouts”. The Police commissioner explained that the late Ibya was said to be the ring leader of those who attacked and killed 10 people in Singa village in Katsina-Ala local government area few days ago.

He said various sets of Nigeria Army uniforms, a vest of charms, a car and several plate numbers, including foreign diplomatic ones, were recovered from the suspects. According to Mr Makama, other suspects escaped during the operation which took place near Gbishe and appealed to members of the public with useful information about them to alert the security agencies.


The Police commissioner also disclosed that one Patrick Uchenna from Anambra was arrested with two sets of generators which were being conveyed to Nasarawa when they were intercepted and arrested while the J5 conveying them was also impounded and brought to the Police headquarters. Mr Makama also urged members of the public not to harbour criminals but rather expose them saying the fight against crime was everybody’s responsibility.

Other members of the state security council including the commanding officer of The 72 special forces battalion, Col Muhammad Nura Inuwa, a representative of the Director of the state security services as well as Security Adviser to the Governor, Col Edwin Jando, rtd were present during the briefing.
